A Piecewise Smooth Fermi-Ulam Pingpong with Potential

In this paper we study a Fermi-Ulam model where a pingpong bounces elastically against a periodically oscillating platform in a gravity field. We assume that the platform motion $f(t)$ is piecewise $C^3$ with a singularity $\dot{f}(0+)\ne\dot{f}(1-)$. If the second derivative of the platform motion is either always positive $\ddot{f}(t)>0$ or always $\ddot{f}(t)<-g$ where $g$ is the gravitational constant, then the escaping orbits constitute a null set and the system is recurrent. However, under these assumptions, escaping orbits coexist with bounded orbits at arbitrarily high energy level.

Beam Test of the PIN-diode Readout Units with Electron Energies from 5 to 40 GeV at CERN SPS

The Chinese large-area violet-light-sensitive silicon photodiode PIN is one of the candidates of the lead tungstate crystal detector readout component of the photon spectrometer in the large heavy ion collision experiment. The PIN diode was assembled with the lead tungstate crystal and the low-noise preamplifier into a complete detector unit. The beam test was carried out on the SPS accelerator at CERN. The energy resolution was measured with the electron beam energy ranging from 5 to 40 GeV. The summation correction method was discussed, and an excellent linearity of the nominal beam energy versus the peak position of the detector was obtained, which showed the punch-through effect can be ignored.

Multi-scale and Context-adaptive Entropy Model for Image Compression

We propose an end-to-end trainable image compression framework with a multi-scale and context-adaptive entropy model, especially for low bitrate compression. Due to the success of autoregressive priors in probabilistic generative model, the complementary combination of autoregressive and hierarchical priors can estimate the distribution of each latent representation accurately. Based on this combination, we firstly propose a multi-scale masked convolutional network as our autoregressive model. Secondly, for the significant computational penalty of generative model, we focus on decoded representations covered by receptive field, and skip full zero latents in arithmetic codec. At last, according to the low-rate compression's constraint in CLIC-2019, we use a method to maximize MS-SSIM by allocating bitrate for each image.

MIOpen: An Open Source Library For Deep Learning Primitives

Deep Learning has established itself to be a common occurrence in the business lexicon. The unprecedented success of deep learning in recent years can be attributed to: abundance of data, availability of gargantuan compute capabilities offered by GPUs, and adoption of open-source philosophy by the researchers and industry. Deep neural networks can be decomposed into a series of different operators. MIOpen, AMD's open-source deep learning primitives library for GPUs, provides highly optimized implementations of such operators, shielding researchers from internal implementation details and hence, accelerating the time to discovery. This paper introduces MIOpen and provides details about the internal workings of the library and supported features. MIOpen innovates on several fronts, such as implementing fusion to optimize for memory bandwidth and GPU launch overheads, providing an auto-tuning infrastructure to overcome the large design space of problem configurations, and implementing different algorithms to optimize convolutions for different filter and input sizes. MIOpen is one of the first libraries to publicly support the bfloat16 data-type for convolutions, allowing efficient training at lower precision without the loss of accuracy.

Bounds on the Capacity Region of the Optical Intensity Multiple Access Channel

This paper provides new inner and outer bounds on the capacity region of optical intensity multiple access channel (OIMAC) with per-user average or peak power constraint. For the average power constrained OIMAC, our bounds at high power are asymptotically tight, thereby characterizing the asymptotic capacity region. The bounds are extended to K-user OIMAC with average power constraint without loss of asymptotic optimality. For the peak power constrained OIMAC, at high power, we bound the asymptotic capacity region to within 0.09 bits, and determine the asymptotic capacity region in the symmetric case. At moderate power, for both types of constraints, the capacity regions are bounded to within fairly small gaps.

Quantum Emergence of Linear Particle Accelerator and Anomalous Photon-induced Near-field Electron Microscopy in a Strong Coupling Regime

Photon-induced near-field electron microscopy (PINEM) is a currently developing spectral approach that characterizes quantum electron-light interactions in electron energy gain/loss spectrum, with symmetrically discretized gains or losses of light quanta ($\hbar ω$), coupled with a laser induced optical near-field. In this letter, we have demonstrated that Linear Particle Accelerator (LPA) and anomalous PINEM (APINEM) can analytically emerge from PINEM-kind interaction in a strong coupling regime, because of quantum interference of spectral photon sidebands overlap. Furthermore, we also found that the quantum interference in point-particle regime with pre-interaction drift can produce interesting optical spectral focusing and a periodically bunching of energy/momentum distribution that enable us to improve the spectral resolution of electron microscopy, imaging and spectroscopy. These observation of LPA and APINEM in strong laser physics can be of great interests for both theoretical and experimental communities, such as ultrafast electron microscopes, attosecond science and laser-driven accelerators.

A Rectangular Billiard with Moving Slits

We describe an exponential Fermi accelerator in a two-dimensional billiard with a moving slit. We have found a mechanism of trapping regions which provides the exponential acceleration for almost all initial conditions with sufficiently high initial energy. Under an additional hyperbolicity assumption, we estimate the waiting time after which most high-energy orbits start to gain energy exponentially fast.

Geometric Engineering and Almost Mathieu Operator

The type IIA string theory on a non-compact Calabi-Yau geometry known as the local $\mathbb{P}^{1} \times \mathbb{P}^{1}$ gives rise to five-dimensional N =1 supersymmetric SU(2) gauge theory compactified on a circle, known as geometric engineering. So it is necessary to study the $\mathbb{P}^{1} \times \mathbb{P}^{1}$ in details. Since the spectrum of the local $\mathbb{P}^{1} \times \mathbb{P}^{1}$ can be written as $E=R^{2}\left(\mathrm{e}^{p}+\mathrm{e}^{-p}\right)+\mathrm{e}^{x}+\mathrm{e}^{-x}$, then by the result of almost Mathieu operator, we show that: (1) when $R^{2}<1$, the spectrum is absolutely continuous which meanings the medium is conductor. (2) when $1\le R^{2} e^β$, the spectrum is almost surely pure point and exhibits Anderson localization. In other words, there are two phase transition points which one is $R^{2}=1$ and the other one is $R^{2}=e^β$.

Knot and Gauge Theory

It has been argued based on electric-magnetic duality that the Jones polynomial of a knot in three dimensions can be computed by counting the solutions of certain gauge theory equations in four-dimension. And the Euler characteristic of Khovanov homology is the Jones polynomial which corresponds to the partition function of twisted $N=4$ super Yang-Mills theory. Moreover, Lee-Yang type phase transition is found in the topological twisted super Yang-Mills theory.

String theory and the Taniyama-Shimura conjecture

The worldsheet of the string theory, which consisting of 26 free scalar fields in Minkowski space, is two dimensional conformal field theory. If we denote the two dimension conformal field theory by elliptic curve and denote the partition function of string theory by modular form, then the relation between conformal field theory and the string theory can be represented as the Taniyama-Shimura conjecture. Moreover, it also can be generalized to the $F$-theory.

Dynamical instability towards finite-momentum pairing in quenched BCS superconducting phases

In this work we numerically investigate the fate of the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) pairing in the presence of quenched phase under Peierls substitution using time-dependent real space and momentum space Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation methods and Anderson pseudospin representation method. This kind of phase imprint can be realized by modulating electric field in ultracold atoms and illumining of THz optical pump pulse in solids with conventional and unconventional superconductors. In the case of weak phase imprint, the BCS pairing is stable; while in the strong phase imprint, instability towards finite-momentum pairing is allowed, in which the real space and momentum space methods yield different results. In the pulsed gauge potential, we find that this instability will not happen even with much stronger vector potential. We also show that the uniform and staggered gauge potentials yield different behaviors. While the staggered potential induces transition from the BCS pairing to over-damped phase, the uniform gauge may enhance the pairing and will not induce to the over-damped phase. These result may shade light on the realization of finite momentum pairing, such as Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov phase with dynamical modulation.

Capacity bounds for bandlimited Gaussian channels with peak-to-average-power-ratio constraint

We revisit Shannon's problem of bounding the capacity of bandlimited Gaussian channel (BLGC) with peak power constraint, and extend the problem to the peak-to-average-power-ratio (PAPR) constrained case. By lower bounding the achievable information rate of pulse amplitude modulation with independent and identically distributed input under a PAPR constraint, we obtain a general capacity lower bound with respect to the shaping pulse. We then evaluate and optimize the lower bound by employing some parametric pulses, thereby improving the best existing result. Following Shannon's approach, capacity upper bound for PAPR constrained BLGC is also obtained. By combining our upper and lower bounds, the capacity of PAPR constrained BLGC is bounded to within a finite gap which tends to zero as the PAPR constraint tends to infinity. Using the same approach, we also improve existing capacity lower bounds for bandlimited optical intensity channel at high SNR.

Planar Cassegrain-type Schwarzschild Objective with Optical Metasurfaces

Curved reflective mirrors play an indispensable role in widely-employed Cassegrain-type optics, which consequently are inevitably bulky, and thus neither integratable nor well extendable. Through substituting geometric phase based reflective metasurfaces for curved mirrors, here a planar Cassegrain-type Schwarzschild objective is obtained, with both the focusing and imaging functionalities experimentally verified. The planar reflective objective achieved is intrinsically free of residual light and thus imposes less stringent restrictions on illuminating light and nanofabrications compared to its refractive counterpart. Our planar Cassegrain-type designs can potentially reshape and simplify the core components of the microscope and telescope systems working at a broadband spectral range, and thus opens new avenues for designing compact imaging systems.

A Comparative Study of Unipolar OFDM Schemes in Gaussian Optical Intensity Channel

We study the information rates of unipolar orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) in discrete-time optical intensity channels (OIC) with Gaussian noise under average optical power constraint. Several single-, double-, and multicomponent unipolar OFDM schemes are considered under the assumption that independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) Gaussian or complex Gaussian codebook ensemble and nearest neighbor decoding (minimum Euclidean distance decoding) are used. We obtain an array of information rate result. These results validate existing signal-to-noise-and-distortion-ratio (SNDR) based rate analysis, establish the equivalence of information rates of certain schemes, and demonstrate the evident benefits of using component-multiplexing at high signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR). For double- and multi-component schemes, the component power allocation strategies that maximize the information rates are investigated. In particular, by utilizing a power allocation strategy, we prove that several multi-component schemes approach the high SNR capacity of the discrete-time Gaussian OIC under average power constraint to within 0.07 bits.

Long-Term Memory Networks for Question Answering

Question answering is an important and difficult task in the natural language processing domain, because many basic natural language processing tasks can be cast into a question answering task. Several deep neural network architectures have been developed recently, which employ memory and inference components to memorize and reason over text information, and generate answers to questions. However, a major drawback of many such models is that they are capable of only generating single-word answers. In addition, they require large amount of training data to generate accurate answers. In this paper, we introduce the Long-Term Memory Network (LTMN), which incorporates both an external memory module and a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) module to comprehend the input data and generate multi-word answers. The LTMN model can be trained end-to-end using back-propagation and requires minimal supervision. We test our model on two synthetic data sets (based on Facebook's bAbI data set) and the real-world Stanford question answering data set, and show that it can achieve state-of-the-art performance.

Dipole: Diagnosis Prediction in Healthcare via Attention-based Bidirectional Recurrent Neural Networks

Predicting the future health information of patients from the historical Electronic Health Records (EHR) is a core research task in the development of personalized healthcare. Patient EHR data consist of sequences of visits over time, where each visit contains multiple medical codes, including diagnosis, medication, and procedure codes. The most important challenges for this task are to model the temporality and high dimensionality of sequential EHR data and to interpret the prediction results. Existing work solves this problem by employing recurrent neural networks (RNNs) to model EHR data and utilizing simple attention mechanism to interpret the results. However, RNN-based approaches suffer from the problem that the performance of RNNs drops when the length of sequences is large, and the relationships between subsequent visits are ignored by current RNN-based approaches. To address these issues, we propose {\sf Dipole}, an end-to-end, simple and robust model for predicting patients' future health information. Dipole employs bidirectional recurrent neural networks to remember all the information of both the past visits and the future visits, and it introduces three attention mechanisms to measure the relationships of different visits for the prediction. With the attention mechanisms, Dipole can interpret the prediction results effectively. Dipole also allows us to interpret the learned medical code representations which are confirmed positively by medical experts. Experimental results on two real world EHR datasets show that the proposed Dipole can significantly improve the prediction accuracy compared with the state-of-the-art diagnosis prediction approaches and provide clinically meaningful interpretation.

On the capacity of bandlimited optical intensity channels with Gaussian noise

We determine lower and upper bounds on the capacity of bandlimited optical intensity channels (BLOIC) with white Gaussian noise. Three types of input power constraints are considered: 1) only an average power constraint, 2) only a peak power constraint, and 3) an average and a peak power constraint. Capacity lower bounds are derived by a two-step process including 1) for each type of constraint, designing admissible pulse amplitude modulated input waveform ensembles, and 2) lower bounding the maximum achievable information rates of the designed input ensembles. Capacity upper bounds are derived by exercising constraint relaxations and utilizing known results on discrete-time optical intensity channels. We obtain degrees-of-freedom-optimal (DOF-optimal) lower bounds which have the same pre-log factor as the upper bounds, thereby characterizing the high SNR capacity of BLOIC to within a finite gap. We further derive intersymbol-interference-free (ISI-free) signaling based lower bounds, which perform well for all practical SNR values. In particular, the ISI-free signaling based lower bounds outperform the DOF-optimal lower bound when the SNR is below 10 dB.

PandaX-III: Searching for Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay with High Pressure $^{136}$Xe Gas Time Projection Chambers

Searching for the Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay (NLDBD) is now regarded as the topmost promising technique to explore the nature of neutrinos after the discovery of neutrino masses in oscillation experiments. PandaX-III (Particle And Astrophysical Xenon Experiment III) will search for the NLDBD of $^{136}$Xe at the China Jin Ping underground Laboratory (CJPL). In the first phase of the experiment, a high pressure gas Time Projection Chamber (TPC) will contain 200 kg, 90% $^{136}$Xe enriched gas operated at 10 bar. Fine pitch micro-pattern gas detector (Microbulk Micromegas) will be used at both ends of the TPC for the charge readout with a cathode in the middle. Charge signals can be used to reconstruct tracks of NLDBD events and provide good energy and spatial resolution. The detector will be immersed in a large water tank to ensure $\sim$5 m of water shielding in all directions. The second phase, a ton-scale experiment, will consist of five TPCs in the same water tank, with improved energy resolution and better control over backgrounds.
