Floquet Amorphous Topological Orders in a One-dimensional Rydberg Glass

The topological orders in amorphous systems that lack crystalline symmetry have gained considerable attention recently. Here we propose the Floquet amorphous topological matter, among which the topological orders are explored in experimentally accessible one-dimensional array of randomly pointed Rydberg atoms with periodic driving. The topological properties are comprehensively characterized, considering both the single-particle and many-body perspectives. It is found that the periodic driving leads to rich topological phases of matter. At the single-particle level, we evaluate the real space winding numbers and polarization, revealing robust amorphous topological phases with 0-type and $π$-type edge modes. We show a structural disorder induced topological phase transition associated with localization transition in the nonequilibrium system. Remarkably, in the many-body case it is discovered that the amorphous topological order exists in the chain of hardcore bosons, captured by the topological entanglement entropy and the string order. Moreover, feasible experimental probe protocols are also elaborated.

Geometric Bloch oscillations and transverse displacement in flat band systems

We investigate transport phenomena and dynamical effects in flat bands where the band dispersion plays no role. We show that wavepackets in geometrically non-trivial flat bands can display dynamics when inhomogeneous electric fields are present. This dynamics is revealed both for the wavepacket trajectory and for its variance, for which we derive semiclassical equations extended to the non-Abelian case. Our findings are tested in flat band models in one- and two-dimensional lattices where the dynamics is solely determined by geometric effects, in the absence of band dispersion. In particular, in the one-dimensional case, we show the existence of Bloch oscillations for the wavepacket position and for the wavepacket variance, whereas in the two-dimensional case we observe a transverse displacement of the wavepacket in the absence of Berry curvature. This work paves the way for understanding quantum-geometry-induced dynamical effects in flat band materials and also opens the possibility for their observation with synthetic matter platforms.

Proposal for realizing and probing topological crystalline insulators in optical lattices

We develop a lattice model which exhibits topological transitions from $Z_2$ topological insulators to mirror symmetry-protected topological crystalline insulators by introducing additional spin-orbit coupling terms. The topological phase is characterized by the mirror winding number, defined within the mirror symmetry invariant subspace, which ensures the protection of gapless edge states and zero-energy corner states under specific boundary conditions. Additionally, we propose a feasible scheme using ultracold atoms confined in a stacked hexagonal optical lattice with Raman fields to realize the two-dimensional topological crystalline insulators. Detection of the mirror winding number in these systems can be achieved by implementing a simple quench sequence and observing the evolution of the time-of-flight patterns.

Non-Abelian quantum geometric tensor in degenerate topological semimetals

The quantum geometric tensor (QGT) characterizes the complete geometric properties of quantum states, with the symmetric part being the quantum metric, and the antisymmetric part being the Berry curvature. We propose a generic Hamiltonian with global degenerate ground states, and give a general relation between the corresponding non-Abelian quantum metric and unit Bloch vector. This enables us to construct the relation between the non-Abelian quantum metric and Berry or Euler curvature. To be concrete, we present and study two topological semimetal models with global degenerate bands under CP and $C_2T$ symmetries, respectively. The topological invariants of these two degenerate topological semimetals are the Chern number and Euler class, respectively, which are calculated from the non-Abelian quantum metric with our constructed relations. Based on the adiabatic perturbation theory, we further obtain the relation between the non-Abelian quantum metric and the energy fluctuation. Such a non-adiabatic effect can be used to extract the non-Abelian quantum metric, which is numerically demonstrated for the two models of degenerate topological semimetals. Finally, we discuss the quantum simulation of the model Hamiltonians with cold atoms.

Detecting degenerate bands topological invariants in optical lattice

In this paper, we present a novel experimental approach for simulating and detecting topological invariants using ultracold fermions confined in two-dimensional hexagonal optical lattices. We propose achieving two-fold degenerate four-band models with non-trivial topologies in both the AII and A classes by introducing additional inertial forces, Raman processes, or periodic driving. By implementing various quench sequences and observing the evolution of the time-of-flight pattern, we can gather comprehensive information about the ground states and determine the topology of the valence bands. Through the analysis of tomographic results, we are able to extract and calculate the spin Chern number for both spin-conserving and spin-nonconserving cases. Additionally, we demonstrate the robustness of the quantized topological invariants and discuss the effects of various experimental parameters.

Realizing and detecting Stiefel-Whitney insulators in an optical Raman lattice

We propose a feasible scheme to realize a four-band Stiefel-Whitney insultor (SWI) with spin-orbit coupled ultracold atoms in an optical Raman lattice. Four selected spin states are coupled by carefully designed Raman lasers, to generate the desired spin-orbit interactions with spacetime inversion symmetry. We map out a phase diagram with respect to the experimental parameters, where a large topological phase region exists. We further present two distinct detection methods to resolve the non-abelian band topology, in both equilibrium and dynamical ways. The detection relies on the spin textures extracted from the time-of-flight imaging, showing the tomographic signatures in the ground states and long-time averaged patterns on certain submanifold via a bulk-surface duality. Our work paves a realistic way to explore novel real topology with quantum matters.

Topological optomechanical amplifier with synthetic $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry

We propose how to achieve synthetic $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry in optomechanics without using any active medium. We find that harnessing the Stokes process in such a system can lead to the emergence of exceptional point (EP), i.e., the coalescing of both the eigenvalues and the eigenvectors of the system. By encircling the EP, both non-reciprocal optical amplification and chiral mode switching can be achieved. As a result, our synthetic $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric optomechanics works as a topological optomechanical amplifier. This provides a surprisingly simplified route to realize $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric optomechanics, indicating that a wide range of EP devices can be created and utilized for various applications such as topological optical engineering and nanomechanical processing or sensing.

Multiple-qubit Rydberg quantum logic gate via dressed-states scheme

We present a scheme to realize multiple-qubit quantum state transfer and quantum logic gate by combining the advantages of Vitanov-style pulses and dressed-state-based shortcut to adiabaticity (STA) in Rydberg atoms. The robustness of the scheme to spontaneous emission can be achieved by reducing the population of Rydberg excited states through the STA technology. Meanwhile, the control errors can be minimized through using the well-designed pulses. Moreover, the dressed-state method applied in the scheme makes the quantum state transfer more smoothly turned on or off with high fidelity and also faster than traditional shortcut to adiabaticity methods. By using Rydberg antiblockade (RAB) effect, the multiple-qubit Toffoli gate can be constructed under a general selection conditions of the parameters.

Distributed quantum information processing via single atom driving

We propose an unconventional scheme for quantum entangled state distribution (QESD) and quantum state transfer~(QST) based on a fiber-cavity-atom system, in which three atoms are confined, respectively, in three bimodal cavities connected with each other by optical fibers. The key feature of the scheme is the virtual excitation of photons, which yields QESD and QST between the two atoms in the edge-cavities conditioned on one-step operation only on the atom in the middle cavity. No actual operation is performed on the two atoms in the edge cavities throughout the scheme. Robustness of the scheme over operational imperfection and dissipation is discussed and the results show that system fidelity is always at a high level. Finally, the experimental feasibility is justified using laboratory available values.
