Extinction profiles for the Sobolev critical fast diffusion equation in bounded domains. I. One bubble dynamics

In this paper, we investigate the extinction behavior of nonnegative solutions to the Sobolev critical fast diffusion equation in bounded smooth domains with the Dirichlet zero boundary condition. Under the two-bubble energy threshold assumption on the initial data, we prove the dichotomy that every solution converges uniformly, in terms of relative error, to either a steady state or a blowing-up bubble.

Hölder regularity for the linearized porous medium equation in bounded domains

In this paper, we systematically study weak solutions of a linear singular or degenerate parabolic equation in a mixed divergence form and nondivergence form, which arises from the linearized fast diffusion equation and the linearized porous medium equation with the homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition. We prove the Hölder regularity of their weak solutions.

A dual Yamabe flow and related integral flows

We study a family of nonlinear integral flows that involve Riesz potentials on Riemannian manifolds. In the Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev (HLS) subcritical regime, we present a precise blow-up profile exhibited by the flows. In the HLS critical regime, by introducing a \textit{dual $Q$ curvature} we demonstrate the concentration-compactness phenomenon. If, in addition, the integral kernel matches with the Green's function of a conformally invariant elliptic operator, this critical flow can be considered as a dual Yamabe flow. Convergence is then established on the unit spheres, which is also valid on certain locally conformally flat manifolds.

Asymptotic behavior of solutions to the Yamabe equation with an asymptotically flat metric

We prove that any positive solution of the Yamabe equation on an asymptotically flat $n$-dimensional manifold of flatness order at least $\frac{n-2}{2}$ and $n\le 24$ must converge at infinity either to a fundamental solution of the Laplace operator on the Euclidean space or to a radial Fowler solution defined on the entire Euclidean space. The flatness order $\frac{n-2}{2}$ is the minimal flatness order required to define ADM mass in general relativity; the dimension $24$ is the dividing dimension of the validity of compactness of solutions to the Yamabe problem. We also prove such alternatives for bounded solutions when $n>24$. We prove these results by establishing appropriate asymptotic behavior near an isolated singularity of solutions to the Yamabe equation when the metric has a flatness order of at least $\frac{n-2}{2}$ at the singularity and $n\le 24$, also when $n>24$ and the solution grows no faster than the fundamental solution of the flat metric Laplacian at the singularity. These results extend earlier results of L. Caffarelli, B. Gidas and J. Spruck, also of N. Korevaar, R. Mazzeo, F. Pacard and R. Schoen, when the metric is conformally flat, and work of C.C. Chen and C. S. Lin when the scalar curvature is a non-constant function with appropriate flatness at the singular point, also work of F. Marques when the metric is not necessarily conformally flat but smooth, and the dimension of the manifold is three, four, or five, as well as recent similar results by the second and third authors in dimension six.

Bubbling and extinction for some fast diffusion equations in bounded domains

We study a Sobolev critical fast diffusion equation in bounded domains with the Brezis-Nirenberg effect. We obtain extinction profiles of its positive solutions, and show that the convergence rates of the relative error in regular norms are at least polynomial. Exponential decay rates are proved for generic domains. Our proof makes use of its regularity estimates, a curvature type evolution equation, as well as blow up analysis. Results for Sobolev subcritical fast diffusion equations are also obtained.

Regularity of solutions to the Dirichlet problem for fast diffusion equations

We prove global Hölder gradient estimates for bounded positive weak solutions of fast diffusion equations in smooth bounded domains with the homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition, which then lead us to establish their optimal global regularity. This solves a problem raised by Berryman and Holland in 1980.

Optimal regularity and fine asymptotics for the porous medium equation in bounded domains

We prove the optimal global regularity of nonnegative solutions to the porous medium equation in smooth bounded domains with the zero Dirichlet boundary condition after certain waiting time $T^*$. More precisely, we show that solutions are $C^{2,α}(\overlineΩ)$ in space, with $α=\frac1m$, and $C^\infty$ in time (uniformly in $x\in \overlineΩ$), for $t>T^*$. Furthermore, this allows us to refine the asymptotics of solutions for large times, improving the best known results so far in two ways: we establish a faster rate of convergence $O(t^{-1-γ})$, and we prove that the convergence holds in the $C^{1,α}(\overlineΩ)$ topology.

Regularity of viscosity solutions of the $σ_k$-Loewner-Nirenberg problem

We study the regularity of the viscosity solution $u$ of the $σ_k$-Loewner-Nirenberg problem on a bounded smooth domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ for $k \geq 2$. It was known that $u$ is locally Lipschitz in $Ω$. We prove that, with $d$ being the distance function to $\partialΩ$ and $δ> 0$ sufficiently small, $u$ is smooth in $\{0 < d(x) < δ\}$ and the first $(n-1)$ derivatives of $d^{\frac{n-2}{2}} u$ are Hölder continuous in $\{0 \leq d(x) < δ\}$. Moreover, we identify a boundary invariant which is a polynomial of the principal curvatures of $\partialΩ$ and its covariant derivatives and vanishes if and only if $d^{\frac{n-2}{2}} u$ is smooth in $\{0 \leq d(x) < δ\}$. Using a relation between the Schouten tensor of the ambient manifold and the mean curvature of a submanifold and related tools from geometric measure theory, we further prove that, when $\partialΩ$ contains more than one connected components, $u$ is not differentiable in $Ω$.

On a Rayleigh-Faber-Krahn inequality for the regional fractional Laplacian

We study a Rayleigh-Faber-Krahn inequality for regional fractional Laplacian operators. In particular, we show that there exists a compactly supported nonnegative Sobolev function $u_0$ that attains the infimum (which will be a positive real number) of the set \[ \left\{ \int\int_{\{u > 0\}\times\{u>0\}} \frac{|u(x) - u(y)|^2}{|x - y|^{n + 2 σ}}d x d y : u \in \mathring H^σ(\mathbb{R}^n), \int_{\mathbb{R}^n} u^2 = 1, |\{u > 0 \}| \leq 1\right\}. \] Unlike the corresponding problem for the usual fractional Laplacian, where the domain of the integration is $\mathbb{R}^n \times \mathbb{R}^n$, symmetrization techniques may not apply here. Our approach is instead based on the direct method and new a priori diameter estimates. We also present several remaining open questions concerning the regularity and shape of the minimizers, and the form of the Euler-Lagrange equations.

Optimal boundary regularity for fast diffusion equations in bounded domains

We prove optimal boundary regularity for bounded positive weak solutions of fast diffusion equations in smooth bounded domains. This solves a problem raised by Berryman and Holland in 1980 for these equations in the subcritical and critical regimes. Our proof of the a priori estimates uses a geometric type structure of the fast diffusion equations, where an important ingredient is an evolution equation for a curvature-like quantity.

Isolated singularities of solutions to the Yamabe equation in dimension $6$

We study the asymptotic behavior of local solutions to the Yamabe equation near an isolated singularity, when the metric is not conformally flat. We prove that, in dimension $6$, any solution is asymptotically close to a Fowler solution, which is an extension of the same result for lower dimensions by F.C. Marques in 2008.

Compactness of conformal metrics with constant $Q$-curvature. I

We study compactness for nonnegative solutions of the fourth order constant $Q$-curvature equations on smooth compact Riemannian manifolds of dimension $\ge 5$. If the $Q$-curvature equals $-1$, we prove that all solutions are universally bounded. If the $Q$-curvature is $1$, assuming that Paneitz operator's kernel is trivial and its Green function is positive, we establish universal energy bounds on manifolds which are either locally conformally flat (LCF) or of dimension $\le 9$. Moreover, assuming in addition that a positive mass type theorem holds for the Paneitz operator, we prove compactness in $C^4$. Positive mass type theorems have been verified recently on LCF manifolds or manifolds of dimension $\le 7$, when the Yamabe invariant is positive. We also prove that, for dimension $\ge 8$, the Weyl tensor has to vanish at possible blow up points of a sequence of blowing up solutions. This implies the compactness result in dimension $\ge 8$ when the Weyl tensor does not vanish anywhere. To overcome difficulties stemming from fourth order elliptic equations, we develop a blow up analysis procedure via integral equations.

Asymptotic symmetry and local behavior of solutions of higher order conformally invariant equations with isolated singularities

We prove sharp blow up rates of solutions of higher order conformally invariant equations in a bounded domain with an isolated singularity, and show the asymptotic radial symmetry of the solutions near the singularity. This is an extension of the celebrated theorem of Caffarelli-Gidas-Spruck for the second order Yamabe equation with isolated singularities to higher order equations. Our approach uses blow up analysis for local integral equations, and is unified for all critical elliptic equations of order smaller than the dimension. We also prove the existence of Fowler solutions to the global equations, and establish a sup*inf type Harnack inequality of Schoen for integral equations.

Existence of entire solutions of Monge-Ampère equations with prescribed asymptotic behaviors

We prove the existence of entire solutions of the Monge-Ampère equations with prescribed asymptotic behavior at infinity of the plane, which was left by Caffarelli-Li in 2003. The special difficulty of the problem in dimension two is due to the global logarithmic term in the asymptotic expansion of solutions at infinity. Furthermore, we give a PDE proof of the characterization of the space of solutions of the Monge-Ampère equation $\det \nabla^2 u=1$ with $k\ge 2$ singular points, which was established by Gálvez-Martínez-Mira in 2005. We also obtain the existence in higher dimensional cases with general right hand sides.
