Stability and Area-Minimizing Property of Higher-Dimensional Helicoids

For each integer $k\geq 1$, we study the $(k+1)$-dimensional helicoid $H_k\subset\mathbb{R}^{2k+1}$ parametrized by \[ (u_1,\ldots,u_k,s) \longmapsto \bigl(u_1e^{is},\ldots,u_ke^{is},s\bigr) \in \mathbb{C}^k\times\mathbb{R}\cong \mathbb{R}^{2k+1}. \] These helicoids form a basic and distinguished family of complete, properly embedded minimal submanifolds diffeomorphic to $\mathbb{R}^{k+1}$, and provide natural higher-dimensional analogues of the classical helicoid in $\mathbb{R}^3$. We completely determine their stability: $H_k$ is stable for $k\geq 3$ and unstable for $k\leq 2$. The sharp transition at $k=3$ is particularly striking: while the classical helicoid $(k=1)$ and its first higher-dimensional analogue $(k=2)$ are unstable, the four-dimensional helicoid $H_3\subset\mathbb{R}^7$ is already stable. For $k\geq 3$, we also determine their area-minimizing property: $H_k$ is area-minimizing when $k$ is even and not area-minimizing when $k$ is odd. The area-minimizing result is proved by constructing an explicit calibration, while the non-area-minimizing result follows from an explicit competitor. In particular, for every even $k\geq 4$, the $(k+1)$-dimensional helicoid $H_k$ is an entire minimal graph in $\mathbb{R}^{2k+1}$ that is area-minimizing.

Small Normal Curvature and Three-Manifold Topology

For $m=2,3$, we prove that every smooth immersion $F:\mathbb{R}\mathbb{P}^m\looparrowright\overline{\mathbb B}^{,N}(1)$ satisfies $\kappa(F)^2\ge 2m/(m+1)$, with equality only for the Veronese embedding, up to congruence. We also prove that a closed, connected, orientable three-manifold admitting an immersion into a Euclidean unit ball with $\kappa(F)\le\sqrt{3/2}$ is diffeomorphic to $S^3$, $\mathbb{R}\mathbb{P}^3$, or $S^2\times S^1$. All three possibilities occur, while $\kappa(F)<\sqrt{3/2}$ forces $X\cong S^3$. These results answer a question of Petrunin and prove a conjecture of Chodosh--Li concerning the normal curvature of three-manifolds. The key intrinsic input is the strict scalar--systolic inequality \[ (\min_Y R_g)\text{sys}(g)^2<6\pi^2 \] for every spherical three-space form $Y$ with $|\pi_1(Y)|>2$. Its proof uses systolic monotonicity along Ricci flow with surgery. This strict inequality complements the sharp scalar--systolic inequality for $\mathbb{R}\mathbb{P}^3$ of Bray--Brendle--Eichmair--Neves.

Scalar Curvature Flexibility in the Riemannian Burnett Compactness Class

Let $M$ be a connected smooth $n$-manifold without boundary, where $n\geq3$, and let $\kappa\in\mathbb{R}$, with $\kappa\leq0$ if $M$ is open. We prove that every smooth Riemannian metric $g_0$ with $\mathrm{Scal}_{g_0}\geq\kappa$ is a locally uniform limit of smooth Riemannian metrics $g_i$ with $\mathrm{Scal}_{g_i}=\kappa$ that are locally uniformly bounded in $W^{1,\infty}$. As a corollary, combining this with Gromov's $C^0$-stability theorem, we obtain the perhaps surprising identity \[ \overline{\{g:\mathrm{Scal}_g=\kappa\}}^{\,C^{0,\alpha}_{\mathrm{loc}}}=\{g:\mathrm{Scal}_g\geq\kappa\}, \quad \forall \alpha \in(0,1). \] The restriction $\alpha<1$ is sharp. At $\kappa=0$, this proves and strengthens the Riemannian reverse-Burnett conjecture of Huneau and Luk.

Rigidity of positive mass theorem with fast metric decay

In this work, we consider metrics on Euclidean space with nonnegative scalar curvature and rapid decay at infinity. We show that, in dimensions four and higher, any such metric is necessarily flat if its decay rate exceeds that of the Schwarzschild metric. This complements recent works by Mazurowski-Yao and You-Zhang, thereby establishing Gromov's conjecture on the rigidity of the positive mass theorem under fast metric decay in all dimensions. Our method also extend naturally to weakly asymptotically flat manifolds.

Maximal Normal Curvature and Veronese Rigidity

We prove a sharp Veronese rigidity theorem for closed immersed submanifolds of the Euclidean unit ball under intrinsic harmonic-structure assumptions. For an isometric immersion $F:(\Sigma,g)\looparrowright\overline B(1)$, define the maximal normal curvature by \[ \kappa(F):= \sup_{x\in\Sigma} \sup_{\substack{v\in T_x\Sigma\\ |v|_g=1}} |A_x(v,v)|. \] If $\Sigma^{2n}$ is almost Hermitian with harmonic fundamental two-form, or $\Sigma^{4n}$ is almost quaternion-Hermitian with harmonic fundamental four-form, $n\ge2$, then \[ \kappa(F)\ge \sqrt{\frac{2n}{n+1}} . \] In the equality case the harmonic form is parallel and the immersion is, up to a totally geodesic inclusion, the standard complex or quaternionic Veronese embedding of projective spaces. The key input is a Bochner--Gauss mechanism that turns the Bochner curvature term of the harmonic form into a sharp algebraic estimate for the shape operators.

Wave decay and horizon instability on strongly charged extremal Kerr-Newman black holes

We prove the first boundedness and pointwise decay result for the scalar wave equation on rotating extremal black holes without any symmetry assumptions. The result applies to slowly rotating (equivalently, strongly charged) extremal Kerr-Newman spacetimes. We establish uniform energy boundedness, integrated local energy decay, and a hierarchy of boundary-weighted estimates at the extremal horizon and at null infinity, from which inverse-polynomial pointwise decay follows in the entire exterior region. As a consequence, we also prove the expected Aretakis instability: for generic initial data, suitable transversal derivatives fail to decay along the event horizon, and higher transversal derivatives blow up asymptotically. The proof uses the $b$-structure of the wave operator near the two boundary hypersurfaces, together with a treatment of normally hyperbolic trapping on extremal Kerr--Newman.

Sharp focal radius estimate and rigidity of hypersurfaces in manifolds with positive curvature

We prove a sharp Clifford-threshold focal-radius estimate and rigidity for immersed hypersurfaces. Under a $p$-form curvature condition, formulated by the Weitzenb\"ock curvature term together with $\mathrm{Ric}_p\ge p$, any closed two-sided immersion $F:\Sigma^m\to M^{m+1}$ with $b_p(\Sigma;\mathbb R)\neq0$ and $1\le p\le m/2$ satisfies \[ r_f(F,M)\le\frac{\pi}{4}. \] The equality case is rigid: if the ambient manifold is complete, equality forces the hypersurface to be locally the Clifford hypersurface $S^p(1/\sqrt2)\times S^{m-p}(1/\sqrt2)\subset S^{m+1}(1)$; if the ambient manifold is compact and connected, it is a spherical space form. The curvature condition follows from $\sec\ge1$ for $p=1$, from normalized $\mathrm{PIC1}\ge1$ for $p=2$, and from curvature operator bounded below by one in all degrees. By quotient lifting and the Hopf fibrations, we also obtain focal-radius estimates in $\mathbb{CP}^n$ and $\mathbb{HP}^n$, with projective Clifford rigidity, without any Betti-number assumption.

Vacuum initial data with minimal decay and borderline decay

In this note, we show that the conical solution-operator method of Mao-Tao in [Localized initial data for Einstein equations] applies to a simple construction of vacuum asymptotically flat initial data at minimal and borderline decay thresholds, corresponding to the global and exterior stability of Minkowski spacetime proved by the first named author in [Global stability of Minkowski spacetime with minimal decay] and [Exterior stability of Minkowski spacetime with borderline decay].

Cauchy Data for Formation of Multiple Black Holes with Prescribed ADM Parameters

We give a simple construction of smooth, asymptotically flat vacuum initial data modeling a relativistic collapsing $N$--body system, with independently prescribed ADM energy, linear momentum, and angular momentum for each component, subject to the timelike condition $\E>|\P|$. The initial data contain no trapped surfaces, and the future development contains multiple causally independent trapped regions that dynamically form from localized subsets of the initial slice. In particular, the maximal development of data with well-separated collapsing components and relative motion is expected to yield spacetimes containing multiple black holes.

Cauchy data for multiple collapsing boson stars

We construct Cauchy initial data for the Einstein-Maxwell-Klein-Gordon (EMKG) system, which evolves in finite time into spacetimes containing multiple trapped surfaces. From a physical perspective, this corresponds to preparing multiple well-separated boson stars, each of which collapses to form a spacelike black hole region. In particular, this extends the result of the second and third named authors on the formation of multiple trapped surfaces in vacuum to the EMKG system.

Constructing entire minimal graphs by evolving planes

We introduce an evolving-plane ansatz for the explicit construction of entire minimal graphs of dimension $n$ ($n\geq 3$) and codimension $m$ ($m\geq 2$), for any odd integer $n$. Under this ansatz, the minimal surface system reduces to the geodesic equation on the Grassmannian in affine coordinates. Geometrically, this equation dictates how the slope of an $(n-1)$ plane evolves as it sweeps out a minimal graph. This framework yields a rich family of explicit entire minimal graphs of odd dimension $n$ and arbitrary codimension $m$. For each entire minimal graph, its conormal bundle gives rise to an entire special Lagrangian graph in $\mathbb{C}^{n+m}$.

Mass-Centered GCM Framework in Perturbations of Kerr(-Newman)

The nonlinear stability problem for black hole solutions of the Einstein equations critically depends on choosing an appropriate geometric gauge. In the vacuum setting, the use of Generally Covariant Modulated (GCM) spheres and hypersurfaces has played a central role in the proof of stability for slowly rotating Kerr spacetime. In this work, we develop an alternative GCM framework, that we call mass-centered, designed to overcome the breakdown of the standard GCM construction in the charged case, where electromagnetic-gravitational coupling destroys the exceptional behavior of the $\ell=1$ mode of the center-of-mass quantity used in the vacuum analysis. This construction is aimed at the nonlinear stability of Reissner-Nordstr\"om and Kerr-Newman spacetimes. Our approach replaces transport-based control of the center-of-mass quantity with a sphere-wise vanishing condition on a renormalized $\ell=1$ mode, yielding mass-centered GCM hypersurfaces with modified gauge constraints. The resulting elliptic-transport system remains determined once an $\ell=1$ basis is fixed via effective uniformization and provides an alternative construction in vacuum in the uncharged limit.

Einstein-Maxwell Equations on Mass-Centered GCM Hypersurfaces

The resolution of the nonlinear stability of black holes as solutions to the Einstein equations relies crucially on imposing the right geometric gauge conditions. In the vacuum case, the use of Generally Covariant Modulated (GCM) spheres and hypersurfaces has been successful in the proof of stability for slowly rotating Kerr spacetime. For the charged setting, our companion paper introduced an alternative mass-centered GCM framework, adapted to the additional difficulties of the Einstein-Maxwell system. In this work, we solve the Einstein-Maxwell equations on such a mass-centered spacelike GCM hypersurface, which is equivalent to solving the constraint equations there. We control all geometric quantities of the solution in terms of some seed data, corresponding to the gauge-invariant fields describing coupled gravitational-electromagnetic radiation in perturbations of Reissner-Nordstr\"om or Kerr-Newman, first identified by the second author and expected to be governed by favorable hyperbolic equations. This provides the first step toward controlling gauge-dependent quantities in the nonlinear stability analysis of the Reissner-Nordstr\"om and Kerr-Newman families.

Formation of multiple Black Holes from Cauchy data

We construct a family of asymptotically flat Cauchy initial data for the Einstein vacuum equations that contain no trapped surfaces, yet whose future development admits multiple causally independent trapped surfaces. Assuming the weak cosmic censorship conjecture, this implies the formation of multiple black holes in finite time. The initial data are obtained by surgically modifying a vacuum geometrostatic manifold equipped with the Brill-Lindquist metric: the data agree exactly with the Brill-Lindquist metric outside a collection of balls centered at its multiple poles, and each ball is replaced by a constant-time slice of a well-prepared dynamical spacetime. The construction is based on Christodoulou's short-pulse framework, a stability analysis in the finite future of the short-pulse region, the geometry of geometrostatic manifolds with small mass and large separation, and the obstruction-free annular gluing method developed by Mao-Oh-Tao. The absence of trapped surfaces in the initial data is verified via a standard mean curvature comparison argument.

Formation of trapped surfaces for the Einstein--Maxwell--charged scalar field system

In this paper, we prove a scale-critical trapped surface formation result for the Einstein--Maxwell--charged scalar field (EMCSF) system, without any symmetry assumptions. Specifically, we establish a scale-critical semi-global existence theorem from past null infinity and show that the focusing of gravitational waves, the concentration of electromagnetic fields, or the condensation of complex scalar fields, each individually, can lead to the formation of a trapped surface. In addition, we capture a nontrivial charging process along past null infinity, which introduces new difficulties due to the abnormal behavior of the matter fields. Nevertheless, the semi-global existence result and the formation of a trapped surface remain valid.

A canonical foliation on null infinity in perturbations of Kerr

Kerr stability for small angular momentum has been proved in the series of works by Klainerman-Szeftel, Giorgi-Klainerman-Szeftel and Shen. Some of the most basic conclusions of the result, concerning various physical quantities on the future null infinity are derived in the work of Klainerman-Szeftel. Further important conclusions were later derived in An-He-Shen and Chen-Klainerman. In this paper, based on the existence and uniqueness results for GCM spheres by Klainerman-Szeftel, we establish the existence of a canonical foliation on the future null infinity for which the null energy, linear momentum, center of mass and angular momentum are well defined and satisfy the expected physical laws of gravitational radiation. The rigid character of this foliation eliminates the usual ambiguities related to these quantities in the physics literature. We also show that under the initial assumption of Klainerman-Szeftel, the center of mass of the black hole has a large deformation (recoil) after the perturbation.

Boundedness and Decay for the Teukolsky System in Kerr-Newman Spacetime II: The Case $|a| \ll M$, $|Q| <M$ in Axial Symmetry

We establish boundedness and polynomial decay results for the Teukolsky system in the exterior spacetime of very slowly rotating and strongly charged sub-extremal Kerr-Newman black holes, with a focus on axially symmetric solutions. The key step in achieving these results is deriving a physical-space Morawetz estimate for the associated generalized Regge-Wheeler system, without relying on spherical harmonic decomposition.
