Small-Data Machine Learning Uncovers Decoupled Control Mechanisms of Crystallinity and Surface Morphology in $\beta$-Ga2O3 Epitaxy

The ultrawide-bandgap semiconductor $\beta$-Ga2O3 holds exceptional promise for next-generation power electronics and deep-ultraviolet optoelectronics, yet its widespread application is hindered by the lack of cost-effective, high-quality heteroepitaxial thin films. Here, we demonstrate an interpretable machine learning framework that efficiently navigates the complex, multiparameter process space of pulsed laser deposition (PLD) to achieve high-crystallinity $\beta$-Ga2O3 epitaxy on c-plane sapphire. By systematically benchmarking nine regression algorithms under limited experimental data conditions, we identify quadratic polynomial ridge regression as the optimal surrogate model, which combines predictive accuracy (R$^2$ $\approx$ 0.86) with full physical transparency through explicit analytical coefficients. Coupling this model with SHAP (SHapley Additive exPlanations) analysis and iterative experimental design, we construct a closed-loop optimization workflow that progressively refines the process-performance landscape over only three experimental rounds. This data-efficient strategy reduces the X-ray rocking curve (RC) full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) by 70$\%$ from > 3$^{\circ}$ to 0.92$^{\circ}$, which is the best reported value for PLD-grown $\beta$-Ga2O3 on sapphire. Intriguingly, concurrent modeling of surface roughness reveals that crystalline quality and surface morphology are governed by distinct dominant factors: temperature primarily controls bulk crystallinity, whereas oxygen pressure dictates surface kinetics. This decoupled mechanism, quantitatively captured for the first time via feature importance analysis, provides actionable physical insight for independent optimization of structural and morphological properties. Our work establishes a generalizable, resource-efficient paradigm for intelligent process development in oxide epitaxy and beyond.

Nanomechanics of Shear Rate-Dependent Stiffening in Micellar Electrically Conductive Polymers

Electrically conducting polymers with mechanical adaptability are essential for flexible electronics, yet most suffer structural degradation under rapid deformation. In this study, multiscale coarse-grained (MSCG) simulations are used to uncover the nanoscale origins of an unusual strain-rate-dependent stiffening in a poly(2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid) (PAMPSA)-polyaniline (PANI) blend. The self-assembled morphology consists of semi-crystalline PANI-rich micellar cores dispersed in a soft, viscoelastic PAMPSA matrix. At low shear rates, micelles migrate and coalesce into larger aggregates, enhancing local crystallinity and transient entanglement density while dissipating stress through matrix deformation. At high shear rates, micelles cannot reorganize quickly enough, leading to core dissociation and the emergence of highly aligned PANI filaments that directly bear the load, with PAMPSA serving as a weak but extended support phase. These contrasting regimes (densification-driven local alignment versus dissociation-driven global alignment) enable reversible mechanical stiffening across three orders of magnitude in shear rate. The results provide a molecular-level framework for designing solid-state polymers with tunable, rate-adaptive mechanical properties.

An Improved Grey Wolf Optimizer Inspired by Advanced Cooperative Predation for UAV Shortest Path Planning

With the widespread application of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) in domains like military reconnaissance, emergency rescue, and logistics delivery, efficiently planning the shortest flight path has become a critical challenge. Traditional heuristic-based methods often suffer from the inability to escape from local optima, which limits their effectiveness in finding the shortest path. To address these issues, a novel Improved Grey Wolf Optimizer (IGWO) is presented in this study. The proposed IGWO incorporates an Advanced Cooperative Predation (ACP) and a Lens Opposition-based Learning Strategy (LOBL) in order to improve the optimization capability of the method. Simulation results show that IGWO ranks first in optimization performance on benchmark functions F1-F5, F7, and F9-F12, outperforming all other compared algorithms. Subsequently, IGWO is applied to UAV shortest path planning in various obstacle-laden environments. Simulation results show that the paths planned by IGWO are, on average, shorter than those planned by GWO, PSO, and WOA by 1.70m, 1.68m, and 2.00m, respectively, across four different maps.
