Abstain-R1: Calibrated Abstention and Post-Refusal Clarification via Verifiable RL

Reinforcement fine-tuning improves the reasoning ability of large language models, but it can also encourage them to answer unanswerable queries by guessing or hallucinating missing information. Existing abstention methods either train models to produce generic refusals or encourage follow-up clarifications without verifying whether those clarifications identify the key missing information. We study queries that are clear in meaning but cannot be reliably resolved from the given information, and argue that a reliable model should not only abstain, but also explain what is missing. We propose a clarification-aware RLVR reward that, while rewarding correct answers on answerable queries, jointly optimizes explicit abstention and semantically aligned post-refusal clarification on unanswerable queries. Using this reward, we train Abstain-R1, a 3B model that improves abstention and clarification on unanswerable queries while preserving strong performance on answerable ones. Experiments on Abstain-Test, Abstain-QA, and SelfAware show that Abstain-R1 substantially improves over its base model and achieves unanswerable-query behavior competitive with larger systems including DeepSeek-R1, suggesting that calibrated abstention and clarification can be learned through verifiable rewards rather than emerging from scale alone.

Probing topological phase transition with non-Hermitian perturbations

We demonstrate that non-Hermitian perturbations can probe topological phase transitions and unambiguously detect non-Abelian zero modes. We show that under carefully designed non-Hermitian perturbations, the Loschmidt echo(LE) decays into 1/N where N is the ground state degeneracy in the topological non-trivial phase, while it approaches 1 in the trivial phase. This distinction is robust against small parameter deviations in the non-Hermitian perturbations. We further study four well-known models that support Majorana or parafermionic zero modes. By calculating their dynamical responses to specific non-Hermitian perturbations, we prove that the steady-state LE can indeed differentiate between different phases. This method avoids the ambiguity introduced by trivial zero-energy states and thus provides an alternative and promising way to demonstrate the emergence of topologically non-trivial phases. The experimental realizations of non-Hermitian perturbations are discussed.

Parafermion supporting platform based on spin transitions in the fractional quantum Hall effect regime

We propose an experimentally-feasible system based on spin transitions in the fractional quantum Hall effect regime where parafermions, high-order non-abelian excitations, can be potentially realized. We provide a proof-of-concept experiments showing that in specially designed heterostructures spin transitions at a filling factor 2/3 can be induced electrostatically, allowing local control of polarization and on-demand formation of helical domain walls with fractionalized charge excitations, a pre-requisite ingredient for parafermions formation. We also present exact diagonalization numerical studies of domain walls formed between domains with different spin polarization in the fractional quantum Hall effect regime and show that they indeed possess electronic and magnetic structure needed for parafermion formation when coupled to an s-wave superconductor.

Majorana fermions in charge carrier hole quantum wires

Luttinger holes with strong Zeemann and spin-orbit interactions in a wire proximity-coupled to a superconductor is a promising system for observation of Majorana fermions. Earlier treatments of confined Luttinger holes in wires ignored a mutual transformation of heavy and light holes upon reflection from the heteroboundaries. This effect is crucial for Zeemann and spin-orbit coupling in the ground subband of holes with several spin-orbit terms linear in momentum. We discuss the criterion for realizing Majorana modes in charge carrier hole systems. GaAs or InSb hole wires shall exhibit stronger topological superconducting pairing compared to InSb electron systems in similar or weaker magnetic fields.
