Transmitter Selection for Secrecy in Cognitive Small-Cell Networks with Backhaul Knowledge

A small-cell network with multiple transmitters and unreliable wireless backhaul is considered for secrecy enhancement. The small-cell network is operating under a spectrum sharing agreement with a primary network in a cognitive radio system. A constraint on the desired outage probability at the primary receiver is assumed as a part of the spectrum sharing agreement. The reliability of the wireless backhaul links are modeled by a set of independent and identically distributed Bernoulli random variables. A sub-optimal and an optimal small-cell transmitter selection (TS) scheme is proposed to improve the performance of the system, depending on the availability of channel state information. Selection schemes are designed for the scenario where knowledge is available regarding which backhaul links are active. The corresponding secrecy outage probabilities along with their asymptotic expressions are derived. It is shown that the secrecy performance is significantly improved compared to the case where knowledge of the active backhaul links is unavailable.

Variations of helioseismic parameters due to magnetic field generated by a flux transport model

The change of sound speed has been found at the base of the convection during the solar cycles, which can be used to constrain the solar internal magnetic field. We aim to check whether the magnetic field generated by the solar dynamo can lead to the cyclic variation of the sound speed detected through helioseismology. The basic configuration of magnetic field in the solar interior was obtained by using a Babcock-Leighton (BL) type flux transport dynamo. We reconstructed one-dimensional solar models by assimilating magnetic field generated by an established dynamo and examined their influences on the structural variables. The results show that magnetic field generated by the dynamo is able to cause noticeable change of the sound speed profile at the base of the convective zone during a solar cycle. Detailed features of this theoretical prediction are also similar to those of the helioseismic results in solar cycle 23 by adjusting the free parameters of the dynamo model.

Gastric histopathology image segmentation using a hierarchical conditional random field

For the Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) applied in the intelligent diagnosis of gastric cancer, existing methods mostly focus on individual characteristics or network frameworks without a policy to depict the integral information. Mainly, Conditional Random Field (CRF), an efficient and stable algorithm for analyzing images containing complicated contents, can characterize spatial relation in images. In this paper, a novel Hierarchical Conditional Random Field (HCRF) based Gastric Histopathology Image Segmentation (GHIS) method is proposed, which can automatically localize abnormal (cancer) regions in gastric histopathology images obtained by an optical microscope to assist histopathologists in medical work. This HCRF model is built up with higher order potentials, including pixel-level and patch-level potentials, and graph-based post-processing is applied to further improve its segmentation performance. Especially, a CNN is trained to build up the pixel-level potentials and another three CNNs are fine-tuned to build up the patch-level potentials for sufficient spatial segmentation information. In the experiment, a hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) stained gastric histopathological dataset with 560 abnormal images are divided into training, validation and test sets with a ratio of 1 : 1 : 2. Finally, segmentation accuracy, recall and specificity of 78.91%, 65.59%, and 81.33% are achieved on the test set. Our HCRF model demonstrates high segmentation performance and shows its effectiveness and future potential in the GHIS field.

A Multi-scale CNN-CRF Framework for Environmental Microorganism Image Segmentation

To assist researchers to identify Environmental Microorganisms (EMs) effectively, a Multiscale CNN-CRF (MSCC) framework for the EM image segmentation is proposed in this paper. There are two parts in this framework: The first is a novel pixel-level segmentation approach, using a newly introduced Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), namely, "mU-Net-B3", with a dense Conditional Random Field (CRF) postprocessing. The second is a VGG-16 based patch-level segmentation method with a novel "buffer" strategy, which further improves the segmentation quality of the details of the EMs. In the experiment, compared with the state-of-the-art methods on 420 EM images, the proposed MSCC method reduces the memory requirement from 355 MB to 103 MB, improves the overall evaluation indexes (Dice, Jaccard, Recall, Accuracy) from 85.24%, 77.42%, 82.27%, and 96.76% to 87.13%, 79.74%, 87.12%, and 96.91%, respectively, and reduces the volume overlap error from 22.58% to 20.26%. Therefore, the MSCC method shows great potential in the EM segmentation field.

Solar-type Stars Observed by LAMOST and Kepler

Obtaining measurements of chromospheric and photometric activity of stars with near-solar fundamental parameters and rotation periods is important for a better understanding of solar-stellar connection. We select a sample of 2603 stars with near-solar fundamental parameters from the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST)-Kepler field and use LAMOST spectra to measure their chromospheric activity and Kepler light curves to measure their photospheric activity (i.e., the amplitude of the photometric variability). While the rotation periods of 1556 of these stars could not be measured due to the low amplitude of the photometric variability and highly irregular temporal profile of light curves, 254 stars were further identified as having near-solar rotation periods. We show that stars with near-solar rotation periods have chromospheric activities that are systematically higher than stars with undetected rotation periods. Furthermore, while the solar level of photospheric and chromospheric activity appears to be typical for stars with undetected rotation periods, the Sun appears to be less active than most stars with near-solar rotation periods (both in terms of photospheric and chromospheric activity).

Magnetic Activity of F-, G-, and K-type Stars in the LAMOST-Kepler Field

Monitoring chromospheric and photospheric indexes of magnetic activity can provide valuable information, especially the interaction between different parts of the atmosphere and their response to magnetic fields. We extract chromospheric indexes, S and Rhk+, for 59,816 stars from LAMOST spectra in the LAMOST-Kepler program, and photospheric index, Reff, for 5575 stars from Kepler light curves. The log Reff shows positive correlation with log Rhk+. We estimate the power-law indexes between Reff and Rhk+ for F-, G-, and K-type stars, respectively. We also confirm the dependence of both chromospheric and photospheric activity on stellar rotation. Ca II H and K emissions and photospheric variations generally decrease with increasing rotation periods for stars with rotation periods exceeding a few days. The power-law indexes in exponential decay regimes show different characteristics in the two activity-rotation relations. The updated largest sample including the activity proxies and reported rotation periods provides more information to understand the magnetic activity for cool stars.

Ages and Masses of 0.64 million Red Giant Branch stars from the LAMOST Galactic Spectroscopic Survey

We present a catalog of stellar age and mass estimates for a sample of 640\,986 red giant branch (RGB) stars of the Galactic disk from the LAMOST Galactic Spectroscopic Survey (DR4). The RGB stars are distinguished from the red clump stars utilizing period spacing derived from the spectra with a machine learning method based on kernel principal component analysis (KPCA). Cross-validation suggests our method is capable of distinguishing RC from RGB stars with only 2 per cent contamination rate for stars with signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) higher than 50. The age and mass of these RGB stars are determined from their LAMOST spectra with KPCA method by taking the LAMOST - $Kepler$ giant stars having asteroseismic parameters and the LAMOST-TGAS sub-giant stars based on isochrones as training sets. Examinations suggest that the age and mass estimates of our RGB sample stars with SNR $>$ 30 have a median error of 30 per cent and 10 per cent, respectively. Stellar ages are found to exhibit positive vertical and negative radial gradients across the disk, and the age structure of the disk is strongly flared across the whole disk of $6<R<13$\,kpc. The data set demonstrates good correlations among stellar age, [Fe/H] and [$α$/Fe]. There are two separate sequences in the [Fe/H] -- [$α$/Fe] plane: a high--$α$ sequence with stars older than $\sim$\,8\,Gyr and a low--$α$ sequence composed of stars with ages covering the whole range of possible ages of stars. We also examine relations between age and kinematic parameters derived from the Gaia DR2 parallax and proper motions. Both the median value and dispersion of the orbital eccentricity are found to increase with age. The vertical angular momentum is found to fairly smoothly decrease with age from 2 to 12\,Gyr, with a rate of about $-$50\,kpc\,km\,s$^{-1}$\,Gyr$^{-1}$. A full table of the catalog is public available online.

Binary Star Fractions from the LAMOST DR4

Stellar systems composed of single, double, triple or high-order systems are rightfully regarded as the fundamental building blocks of the Milky Way. Binary stars play an important role in formation and evolution of the Galaxy. Through comparing the radial velocity variations from multi-epoch observations, we analyze the binary fraction of dwarf stars observed with the LAMOST. Effects of different model assumptions such as orbital period distributions on the estimate of binary fractions, are investigated. The results based on log-normal distribution of orbital periods reproduce the previous complete analyses better than the power-law distribution. We find that the binary fraction increases with $T_{\rm eff}$ and decreases with [Fe/H]. We first investigate the relation between $α$-elements and binary fraction in such a large sample as the LAMOST. The old stars with high [$α$/Fe] dominate higher binary fraction than young stars with low [$α$/Fe]. At the same mass, former forming stars possess a higher binary fraction than newly forming ones, which may be related with the evolution of the Galaxy.

Mass and Age of Red Giant Branch Stars Observed with LAMOST and \emph{Kepler}

Obtaining accurate and precise masses and ages for large numbers of giant stars is of great importance for unraveling the assemblage history of the Galaxy. In this paper, we estimate masses and ages of 6940 red giant branch (RGB) stars with asteroseismic parameters deduced from \emph{Kepler} photometry and stellar atmospheric parameters derived from LAMOST spectra. The typical uncertainties of mass is a few per cent, and that of age is $\sim$\,20 per cent. The sample stars reveal two separate sequences in the age -- [$α$/Fe] relation -- a high--$α$ sequence with stars older than $\sim$\,8\,Gyr and a low--$α$ sequence composed of stars with ages ranging from younger than 1\,Gyr to older than 11\,Gyr. We further investigate the feasibility of deducing ages and masses directly from LAMOST spectra with a machine learning method based on kernel based principal component analysis, taking a sub-sample of these RGB stars as a training data set. We demonstrate that ages thus derived achieve an accuracy of $\sim$\,24 per cent. We also explored the feasibility of estimating ages and masses based on the spectroscopically measured carbon and nitrogen abundances. The results are quite satisfactory and significantly improved compared to the previous studies.

Stellar Parameters of Main Sequence Turn-off Star Candidates Observed with the LAMOST and Kepler

Main sequence turn-off (MSTO) stars have advantages as indicators of Galactic evolution since their ages could be robustly estimated from atmospheric parameters. Hundreds of thousands of MSTO stars have been selected from the LAMOST Galactic sur- vey to study the evolution of the Galaxy, and it is vital to derive accurate stellar parameters. In this work, we select 150 MSTO star candidates from the MSTO stars sample of Xiang that have asteroseismic parameters and determine accurate stellar parameters for these stars combing the asteroseismic parameters deduced from the Kepler photometry and atmospheric parameters deduced from the LAMOST spectra. With this sample, we examine the age deter- mination as well as the contamination rate of the MSTO stars sample. A comparison of age between this work and Xiang shows a mean difference of 0.53 Gyr (7%) and a dispersion of 2.71 Gyr (28%). The results show that 79 of the candidates are MSTO stars, while the others are contaminations from either main sequence or sub-giant stars. The contamination rate for the oldest stars is much higher than that for the younger stars. The main cause for the high contamination rate is found to be the relatively large systematic bias in the LAMOST surface gravity estimates.

Asteroseismic analysis of Kepler target KIC 2837475

The ratios $r_{01}$ and $r_{10}$ of small to large separations of KIC 2837475 primarily exhibit an increase behavior in the observed frequency range. The calculations indicate that only the models with overshooting parameter $δ_{\rm ov}$ between approximately 1.2 and 1.6 can reproduce the observed ratios $r_{01}$ and $r_{10}$ of KIC 2837475. The ratios $r_{01}$ and $r_{10}$ of the frequency separations of p-modes with inner turning points that are located in the overshooting region of convective core can exhibit an increase behavior. The frequencies of the modes that can reach the overshooting region decrease with the increase in $δ_{\rm ov}$. Thus the ratio distributions are more sensitive to $δ_{\rm ov}$ than to other parameters. The increase behavior of the KIC 2837475 ratios results from a direct effect of the overshooting of convective core. The characteristic of the ratios provides a strict constraint on stellar models. Observational constraints point to a star with $M=1.490\pm0.018$ $M_{\odot}$, $R=1.67\pm0.01$ $R_{\odot}$, age $=2.8\pm0.4$ Gyr, and $1.2\lesssim$ $δ_{\rm ov}$ $\lesssim1.6$ for KIC 2837475.
