E2-Conditioned Finite-Horizon Effective Capacity for Public-Safety MCX over Shared O-RAN

Supporting public-safety Mission Critical Services (MCX) over a shared Open radio access network (O-RAN) requires service assurance over finite incident horizons, while ordinary mobile traffic competes for the same resources and heterogeneous E2 domains expose different observations, control actions, and actuation latencies. Existing RAN key performance indicators are retrospective, whereas conventional effective capacity characterizes an asymptotic stationary regime and therefore suppresses both the initial E2-observed condition and the finite selection-to-actuation transient. To solve this problem, in this paper we develop an E2-conditioned finite-horizon effective capacity (FH-EC) framework for public-safety MCX over shared O-RAN. Specifically, we first establish a finite-horizon O-RAN MCX-based service model that incorporates E2-observed network states, control actuation latency, and correlation-aware connectivity diversity. Based on this model, we derive an FH-EC formulation that characterizes the executable service capability within a finite mission horizon. Furthermore, we transform FH-EC into confidence-calibrated capability profiles and develop an MCX orchestration framework with contract certification, shared-resource protection, and FH-EC-driven profile selection at the Near-RT RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC). Coupled MATLAB/ns-3 evaluations demonstrate the predicted short-horizon state and actuation effects and show that adaptive connectivity selection improves MCX supportability under O-DU degradation while satisfying the configured multi-QoS and non-MCX protection requirements.

Unified Analytical Framework for Emergency RIS-UAV Networks Under Practical Impairments

Heterogeneous unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) networks embedded with reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) present a promising paradigm for emergency wireless communications (EWC), offering enhanced coverage and resilience in harsh environments. However, extreme conditions in disaster areas necessitate robust performance evaluation under practical impairments, including outdated/imperfect channel state information (CSI) and discrete RIS phase shifts. Existing works lack a unified analytical framework for modeling CSI errors, employing inconsistent approaches that treat errors either as channel gain or as equivalent interference, leading to ambiguous benchmarks. To address this, we propose the $\zeta$-Model, a unified receiver-equivalent signal-to-noise (SNR) framework that continuously parameterizes residual-error exploitability via $\zeta$. This framework unifies the information-theoretic model (ITM) and the engineering baseline model (EBM) as the optimistic and pessimistic benchmark receiver treatments, while incorporating the simplified engineering model (SEM) as a tractable approximation. By employing the Fisher-Snedecor $\mathcal{F}$ distribution to capture severe fading and shadowing, we derive moment-matching-based closed-form or finite-sum approximate expressions and asymptotic expressions for average capacity (AC), effective capacity (EC), and outage probability (OP) under the proposed unified framework and its boundary cases. Validated by Monte Carlo simulations, our framework quantifies performance limits and provides crucial insights for designing robust and efficient EWC systems under various channel conditions and system impairments.

Control-Certified Wireless Resource Allocation for Digital-Twin-Enabled UAV Swarms

Wireless resource allocation in digital-twin-enabled unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) swarms must be both network-feasible and certifiably safe for closed-loop control. Existing packet-level or scalar-priority schedulers cannot meaningfully compare heterogeneous multi-hop actions that differ simultaneously in route, retransmission depth, blocklength, bidirectional delay, delivery probability, and TDMA slot cost. This paper introduces a certificate-guided resource allocation framework for low-altitude multi-hop UAV swarms. A digital twin maps predicted topology, channel, route, and controller-side state into a shared five-dimensional quality-of-service (QoS) certificate comprising uplink/downlink delay bounds, directional delivery guarantees, and a certified upper bound on the interval between successful bidirectional interactions. A state-conditioned stochastic drift test then admits only certificates whose augmented Lyapunov drift is nonpositive under the current controller state. Admitted actions are reduced to certified supply frontiers by removing dominated route-slot configurations, and the online scheduler maximizes Lyapunov-drift reduction under a shared TDMA slot budget via exact dynamic programming. Closed-loop ns-3 simulations demonstrate that the proposed framework outperforms fixed-service, certificate-filtered fixed-priority, dynamic-transmission-count, and value-of-information baselines in both tracking accuracy and high-risk state suppression under identical communication budgets.

Anti-Jamming Optimization for EM-Compliant Active RIS via Decoupling Architecture

Wireless communication systems are increasingly vulnerable to sophisticated jamming attacks with the rapid evolution of jamming technologies and advanced signal processing techniques. While traditional anti-jamming techniques offer limited performance gains, active reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have emerged as a promising channel-domain solution for improving resilience against jamming. Nonetheless, existing studies often rely on simplified electromagnetic (EM) models that do not fully capture mutual coupling (MC) and impedance mismatches in RIS hardware. In this paper, we propose an EM-compliant active (EMC-Active) RIS model for anti-jamming systems, explicitly incorporating the EM and physical properties at active RIS, such as MC effects, channel correlation, and discrete phase. To evaluate the anti-jamming performance of the proposed EMC-Active RIS, we develop a low-complexity alternating optimization (AO) algorithm based on the decoupling architecture (DA) to maximize the ergodic achievable rate. By leveraging the DA to explicitly eliminate MC effects among REs, the original coupled system is transformed into a tractable and scalable uncoupled representation. Numerical results demonstrate that the DA-based AO algorithm can significantly reduce the modeling and optimization complexity and efficiently solve the problem in an alternating manner with substantially reduced iteration overhead.

Fundamental for Delay and Reliability Guarantees for Emergency UAV

To support mission-critical services in emergency scenarios, wireless networks are required to provide stringent guarantees under massive Ultra-Reliable Low-Latency Communications (mURLLC) constraints. Distributed unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) architectures have recently emerged as a promising solution for rapidly deployable emergency communication systems. However, how to fundamentally characterize and guarantee statistical quality-of-service (QoS) for such systems in the finite blocklength regime remains largely unexplored. To overcome these challenges, in this paper we develop a fundamental analytical framework for delay and reliability bounded QoS guarantees in distributed UAV-based massive MIMO emergency networks under finite blocklength coding (FBC). By rigorously modeling the stochastic service process of distributed massive MIMO fading channels, we derive statistical characterizations the delay and error-rate bounded QoS exponents. We also establish QoS-driven controlling functions, including the $\epsilon$-effective capacity and the feasible QoS region. Finally, the obtained simulation results validate and evaluate our developed modeling techniques and asymptotic formulations to support mURLLC.

Movable Antenna Enabled Reconfigurable Array Topologies for Structured Beam Communications

Spatially structured beams have emerged as a promising technology for enhancing spectrum efficiency (SE) in sixth-generation (6G) networks. However, structured beam schemes based on fixed-position antennas (FPAs) fail to fully exploit the array aperture, thereby limiting their topological reconfigurability and adaptability to diverse communication scenarios. To overcome these limitations, this paper proposes a novel structured beam communication framework exploiting movable antennas (MAs) to achieve reconfigurable array topologies. Specifically, we develop an MA-based geometric modeling framework to construct a variety of practical array topologies, thereby enabling the realization of diverse array configurations utilizing a unified hardware platform. Furthermore, we investigate the joint design of the array topology and the structured beamforming vector to efficiently exploit the array aperture and facilitate the multiplexing of orthogonal spatial modes. Accordingly, we formulate the corresponding beam generation and demodulation schemes and derive the channel gains under varying array topologies. We also propose an alternating optimization algorithm to jointly optimize the array topology configuration, the antenna element positions, and the structured beamforming vector, with the aim of maximizing the system SE. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed joint design significantly enhances the SE compared to conventional FPA schemes. By synergizing the spatial multiplexing degrees of freedom (DoFs) of structured beams with the mobility DoFs of MAs within 2D planar regions, this work establishes a reconfigurable and practical framework for structured beam-based wireless communications.

Data Heterogeneity-Aware Client Selection for Federated Learning in Wireless Networks

Federated Learning (FL) enables mobile edge devices, functioning as clients, to collaboratively train a decentralized model while ensuring local data privacy. However, the efficiency of FL in wireless networks is limited not only by constraints on communication and computational resources but also by significant data heterogeneity among clients, particularly in large-scale networks. This paper first presents a theoretical analysis of the impact of client data heterogeneity on global model generalization error, which can result in repeated training cycles, increased energy consumption, and prolonged latency. Based on the theoretical insights, an optimization problem is formulated to jointly minimize learning latency and energy consumption while constraining generalization error. A joint client selection and resource allocation (CSRA) approach is then proposed, employing a series of convex optimization and relaxation techniques. Extensive simulation results demonstrate that the proposed CSRA scheme yields higher test accuracy, reduced learning latency, and lower energy consumption compared to baseline methods that do not account for data heterogeneity.

SARC: Sentiment-Augmented Deep Role Clustering for Fake News Detection

Fake news detection has been a long-standing research focus in social networks. Recent studies suggest that incorporating sentiment information from both news content and user comments can enhance detection performance. However, existing approaches typically treat sentiment features as auxiliary signals, overlooking role differentiation, that is, the same sentiment polarity may originate from users with distinct roles, thereby limiting their ability to capture nuanced patterns for effective detection. To address this issue, we propose SARC, a Sentiment-Augmented Role Clustering framework which utilizes sentiment-enhanced deep clustering to identify user roles for improved fake news detection. The framework first generates user features through joint comment text representation (with BiGRU and Attention mechanism) and sentiment encoding. It then constructs a differentiable deep clustering module to automatically categorize user roles. Finally, unlike existing approaches which take fake news label as the unique supervision signal, we propose a joint optimization objective integrating role clustering and fake news detection to further improve the model performance. Experimental results on two benchmark datasets, RumourEval-19 and Weibo-comp, demonstrate that SARC achieves superior performance across all metrics compared to baseline models. The code is available at: https://github.com/jxshang/SARC.

Location-Aided Distributed Beamforming for Near-Field Communications with Element-Wise RIS

Active reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) emerges as an effective technique to resist the double-fading attenuation of passive RIS. By embedding with power harvesting function, it further evolves to zero-power active RIS, which can effectively enhance the flexibility of RIS deployment without external power demand. Nevertheless, existing works neglected the inherent difficulty of channel estimation (CE) for RIS-assisted systems, and the discrete phase shift constraint in practical deployment. In this paper we design a new element-wise RIS architecture and propose a distributed location-aided transmission scheme with low complexity to enhance the reflected gain for channel state information (CSI)-limited RIS-assisted near-field communications. Specifically, the new element-wise RIS provides dynamic element selection capability with low hardware resources. Based on Fresnel diffraction theory, we construct the mapping from locations in space-domain to phase distributions of waves in phase-domain and reveal the priority of elements for harvesting and reflecting. {Then, the distributed beamforming design with the phase of determine-then-align is proposed, where the estimation overhead reduction stems from exempted requirements of RIS-associated CE at base station (BS).} The asymptotic analysis indicates that the proposed scheme can achieve the optimal gain with a fixed proportion of reflective elements when RIS is large, followed by simulations to verify its superiority to other protocols.

Towards Reliable Emergency Wireless Communications over SAGINs: A Composite Fading and QoS-Centric Perspective

In emergency wireless communications (EWC) scenarios, ensuring reliable, flexible, and high-rate transmission while simultaneously maintaining seamless coverage and rapid response capabilities presents a critical technical challenge. To this end, satellite-aerial-ground integrated network (SAGIN) has emerged as a promising solution due to its comprehensive three-dimensional coverage and capability to meet stringent, multi-faceted quality-of-service (QoS) requirements. Nevertheless, most existing studies either neglected the inherent characteristics of the complex channel conditions due to the terrain changes or analyzed the performance in the absence of QoS constraints, resulting in a mismatch between theoretical analysis and practical performance. To remedy such deficiencies, in this paper we establish a performance modeling framework for SAGIN employing the Fisher-Snedecor $\mathcal{F}$ composite fading model to characterize the air-ground link. In specific, the proposed $\mathcal{F}$ composite fading channel is adopted to accurately describe both multipath fading and shadowing in harsh ground environments. The exact distribution of end-to-end signal-to-noise (SNR) statistics for space-air and air-ground links is developed, enabling theoretical analysis of cascaded channels with fixed-gain amplify-and-forward (AF) and decode-and-forward (DF) relaying protocols, respectively. Furthermore, asymptotic expressions of the derived results are provided to offer concise representations and demonstrate close alignment with theoretical predictions in the high-SNR regime. Finally, the insightful closed-form and asymptotic expressions of effective capacity with QoS provisioning, outage probability, and $ε$-outage capacity are investigated, respectively, followed by both field measurements and Monte Carlo simulations to verify the effectiveness.

Intelligent Multi-link EDCA Optimization for Delay-Bounded QoS in Wi-Fi 7

IEEE 802.11be (Wi-Fi 7) introduces Multi-Link Operation (MLO) as a While MLO offers significant parallelism and capacity, realizing its full potential in guaranteeing strict delay bounds and optimizing Quality of Service (QoS) for diverse, heterogeneous traffic streams in complex multi-link scenarios remain a significant challenge. This is largely due to the limitations of static Enhanced Distributed Channel Access (EDCA) parameters and the complexity inherent in cross-link traffic management. To address this, this paper investigates the correlation between overall MLO QoS indicators and the configuration of EDCA parameters and Acess Catagory (AC) traffic allocation among links. Based on this analysis, we formulate a constrained optimization problem aiming to minimize the sum of overall packet loss rates for all access categories while satisfying their respective overall delay violation probability constraints. A Genetic Algorithm (GA)-based MLO EDCA QoS optimization algorithm is designed to efficiently search the complex configuration space of AC assignments and EDCA parameters. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach's efficacy in generating adaptive MLO configuration strategies that align with diverse service requirements. The proposed solution significantly improves delay distribution characteristics, and enhance QoS robustness and resource utilization efficiency in high-load MLO environments.

AI-Enhanced Distributed Channel Access for Collision Avoidance in Future Wi-Fi 8

The exponential growth of wireless devices and stringent reliability requirements of emerging applications demand fundamental improvements in distributed channel access mechanisms for unlicensed bands. Current Wi-Fi systems, which rely on binary exponential backoff (BEB), suffer from suboptimal collision resolution in dense deployments and persistent fairness challenges due to inherent randomness. This paper introduces a multi-agent reinforcement learning framework that integrates artificial intelligence (AI) optimization with legacy device coexistence. We first develop a dynamic backoff selection mechanism that adapts to real-time channel conditions through access deferral events while maintaining full compatibility with conventional CSMA/CA operations. Second, we introduce a fairness quantification metric aligned with enhanced distributed channel access (EDCA) principles to ensure equitable medium access opportunities. Finally, we propose a centralized training decentralized execution (CTDE) architecture incorporating neighborhood activity patterns as observational inputs, optimized via constrained multi-agent proximal policy optimization (MAPPO) to jointly minimize collisions and guarantee fairness. Experimental results demonstrate that our solution significantly reduces collision probability compared to conventional BEB while preserving backward compatibility with commercial Wi-Fi devices. The proposed fairness metric effectively eliminates starvation risks in heterogeneous scenarios.

Active Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface Assisted MIMO: Electromagnetic-Compliant Modeling with Mutual Coupling

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS) represent a transformative technology for sixth-generation (6G) wireless communications, but it suffers from a significant limitation, namely the double-fading attenuation. Active RIS has emerged as a promising solution, effectively mitigating the attenuation issues associated with conventional RIS-assisted systems. However, the current academic work on active RIS focuses on the system-level optimization of active RIS, often overlooking the development of models that are compatible with its electromagnetic (EM) and physical properties. The challenge of constructing realistic, EM-compliant models for active RIS-assisted communication, as well as understanding their implications on system-level optimization, remains an open research area. To tackle these problems, in this paper we develop a novel EM-compliant model with mutual coupling (MC) for active RIS-assisted wireless systems by integrating the developed scattering-parameter ($S$-parameter) based active RIS framework with multiport network theory, which facilitates system-level analysis and optimization. To evaluate the performance of the EM-compliant active RIS model, we design the joint optimization scheme based on the transmit beamforming at the transmitter and the reflection coefficient at the active RIS to maximize the achievable rate of EM-compliant active RIS-assisted MIMO system. To tackle the inherent non-convexity of this problem, we employ the Sherman-Morrison inversion and Neumann series (SMaN)-based alternating optimization (AO) algorithm. Simulation results verified that EM property (i.e., MC effect) is an indispensable factor in the optimization process of MIMO systems. Neglecting this effect introduces a substantial performance gap, highlighting its significance in the more pronounced the MC effect is, the greater the gap in achievable rates.

Continuous-Aperture Array Based OAM High-Capacity Communication For Metaverse

The extensive data interaction demands of an immersive metaverse necessitate the adoption of emerging technologies to enable high-capacity communication. Vortex electromagnetic waves with different orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes are spatially orthogonal, providing a novel spatial multiplexing dimension to achieve high-capacity communication. However, the number of orthogonal OAM modes based on a discrete uniform circular array (UCA) is limited by the number of array elements in the UCA, and traditional discrete channel models are unable to accurately capture the physical properties of vortex electromagnetic wave propagation. The continuous-aperture array (CAPA) is composed of densely packed electromagnetic excitation elements, capable of flexibly and efficiently generating the desired surface currents to produce an arbitrary number of mutually orthogonal OAM modes. From the perspective of electromagnetic information theory (EIT), we propose a CAPA-based OAM orthogonal transmission scheme to realize high-capacity communication. We design the surface currents of the CAPA using Fourier basis functions, derive the electromagnetic channel for vortex electromagnetic waves, and investigate the upper bound of the spectrum efficiency for CAPA-based OAM orthogonal transmission. This paper establishes a theoretical foundation for applying EIT to the orthogonal transmission of vortex electromagnetic waves, offering a novel solution for achieving CAPA-based efficient and high-capacity communication.

Fair AI-STA for Legacy Wi-Fi: Enhancing Sensing and Power Management with Deep Q-Learning

With the increasing complexity of Wi-Fi networks and the iterative evolution of 802.11 protocols, the Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance (CSMA/CA) protocol faces significant challenges in achieving fair channel access and efficient resource allocation between legacy and modern Wi-Fi devices. To address these challenges, we propose an AI-driven Station (AI-STA) equipped with a Deep Q-Learning (DQN) module that dynamically adjusts its receive sensitivity threshold and transmit power. The AI-STA algorithm aims to maximize fairness in resource allocation while ensuring diverse Quality of Service (QoS) requirements are met. The performance of the AI-STA is evaluated through discrete event simulations in a Wi-Fi network, demonstrating that it outperforms traditional stations in fairness and QoS metrics. Although the AI-STA does not exhibit exceptionally superior performance, it holds significant potential for meeting QoS and fairness requirements with the inclusion of additional MAC parameters. The proposed AI-driven Sensitivity and Power algorithm offers a robust framework for optimizing sensitivity and power control in AI-STA devices within legacy Wi-Fi networks.

Digital-Analog Transmission based Emergency Semantic Communications

Emergency Wireless Communication (EWC) networks adopt the User Datagram Protocol (UDP) to transmit scene images in real time for quickly assessing the extent of the damage. However, existing UDP-based EWC exhibits suboptimal performance under poor channel conditions since UDP lacks an Automatic Repeat reQuest (ARQ) mechanism. In addition, future EWC systems must not only enhance human decisionmaking during emergency response operations but also support Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven approaches to improve rescue efficiency. The Deep Learning-based Semantic Communication (DL-based SemCom) emerges as a robust, efficient, and taskoriented transmission scheme, suitable for deployment in UDP based EWC. Due to the constraints in hardware capabilities and transmission resources, the EWC transmitter is unable to integrate sufficiently powerful NN model, thereby failing to achieve ideal performance under EWC scene. For EWC scene, we propose a performance-constrained semantic coding model, which considers the effects of the semantic noise and the channel noise. Then, we derive Cramer-Rao lower bound of the proposed semantic coding model, as guidance for the design of semantic codec to enhance its adaptability to semantic noise as well as channel noise. To further improve the system performance, we propose Digital-Analog transmission based Emergency Semantic Communication (DAESemCom) framework, which integrates the analog DL-based semantic coding and the digital Distributed Source Coding (DSC) schemes to leverage their respective advantages. The simulation results show that the proposed DA-ESemCom framework outperforms the classical Separated Source-Channel Coding (SSCC) and other DL-based Joint Source-Channel Coding (DL-based JSCC) schemes in terms of fidelity and detection performances.

RIS-assisted Seamless Connectivity in Wireless Multi-Hop Relay Networks

In recent years, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) have garnered significant attention for their ability to control the phase shifts in reflected signals. By intelligently adjusting these phases, RIS can establish seamless direct paths between communication devices obstructed by obstacles, eliminating the need for forwarding and significantly reducing system overhead associated with relaying. This capability is crucial in multi-hop ad hoc networks requiring multiple relay steps. Consequently, the concept of incorporating multi-hop RIS into wireless multi-hop relay networks has emerged. In this paper, we propose a novel network model where each UAV communication node is equipped with a RIS, facilitating seamless connections in multi-hop relay wireless networks. We analyze the performance of this model by integrating RIS-assisted physical layer modeling into the seamless connection network framework and conducting a detailed comparative analysis of RIS-assisted and conventional connections. At the medium access layer, we introduce a RIS-DCF MAC protocol based on the IEEE 802.11 distributed coordination function (DCF), modeling the medium access process as a two-hop access scenario. Our results demonstrate that the seamless connections and diversity gain provided by RIS significantly enhance the performance of multi-hop relay wireless networks.

MAC Revivo: Artificial Intelligence Paves the Way

The vast adoption of Wi-Fi and/or Bluetooth capabilities in Internet of Things (IoT) devices, along with the rapid growth of deployed smart devices, has caused significant interference and congestion in the industrial, scientific, and medical (ISM) bands. Traditional Wi-Fi Medium Access Control (MAC) design faces significant challenges in managing increasingly complex wireless environments while ensuring network Quality of Service (QoS) performance. This paper explores the potential integration of advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) methods into the design of Wi-Fi MAC protocols. We propose AI-MAC, an innovative approach that employs machine learning algorithms to dynamically adapt to changing network conditions, optimize channel access, mitigate interference, and ensure deterministic latency. By intelligently predicting and managing interference, AI-MAC aims to provide a robust solution for next generation of Wi-Fi networks, enabling seamless connectivity and enhanced QoS. Our experimental results demonstrate that AI-MAC significantly reduces both interference and latency, paving the way for more reliable and efficient wireless communications in the increasingly crowded ISM band.
