Unravelling the Holomorphic Twist II: Anomalies and Extended Supersymmetry

Twists of four-dimensional supersymmetric quantum field theories (SQFTs) isolate protected sectors with rich algebraic structures. We develop a unified framework for analyzing symmetries and anomalies in four-dimensional holomorphically twisted SQFTs, combiningcomplex-geometric and algebraic perspectives. This approach clarifies the connections between existing formulations in the literature and resolves several open questions left unanswered in the first installment of this series. We place particular emphasis on theories with extended supersymmetry, where the holomorphic twist gives rise to enhanced algebraic and geometric structures. We explain how these features emerge and govern the organization of the twisted theory. Furthermore, we demonstrate how a superconformal deformation of the twisted theory naturally leads to the associated vertex operator algebra, clarifying how the higher algebraic structures of the holomorphically twisted theory give rise to vertex algebras structures.

Gapped Phases in (2+1)d with Non-Invertible Symmetries: Part I

We use the Symmetry Topological Field Theory (SymTFT) to study and classify gapped phases in (2+1)d for a class of categorical symmetries, referred to as being of bosonic type. The SymTFTs for these symmetries are given by twisted and untwisted (3+1)d Dijkgraaf-Witten (DW) theories for finite groups G. A finite set of boundary conditions (BCs) of these DW theories is well-known: these simply involve imposing Dirichlet and Neumann conditions on the (3+1)d gauge fields. We refer to these as minimal BCs. The key new observation here is that for each DW theory, there exists an infinite number of other BCs, that we call non-minimal BCs. These non-minimal BCs are all obtained by a 'theta construction', which involves stacking the Dirichlet BC with 3d TFTs having G 0-form symmetry, and gauging the diagonal G symmetry. On the one hand, using the non-minimal BCs as symmetry BCs gives rise to an infinite number of non-invertible symmetries having the same SymTFT, while on the other hand, using the non-minimal BCs as physical BCs in the sandwich construction gives rise to an infinite number of (2+1)d gapped phases for each such non-invertible symmetry. Our analysis is thoroughly exemplified for G = $\mathbb{Z_2}$ and more generally any finite abelian group, for which the resulting non-invertible symmetries and their gapped phases already reveal an immensely rich structure.

Semi-Chiral Operators in 4d ${\cal N}=1$ Gauge Theories

We discuss the properties of quarter-BPS local operators in four dimensional ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory using the formalism of holomorphic twists. We study loop corrections both to the space of local operators and to algebraic operations which endow the twisted theory with an infinite symmetry algebra. We classify all single-trace quarter-BPS operators in the planar approximation for $SU(N)$ gauge theory and propose a holographic dual description for the twisted theory. We classify perturbative quarter-BPS operators in $SU(2)$ and $SU(3)$ gauge theories with sufficiently small quantum numbers and discuss possible non-perturbative corrections to the answer. We set up analogous calculations for some theories with matter.

Higher Operations in Perturbation Theory

We discuss the role of formal deformation theory in quantum field theories and present various ``higher operations'' which control their deformations, (generalized) OPEs, and anomalies. Particular attention is paid to holomorphic-topological theories where we systematically describe and regularize the Feynman diagrams which compute these higher operations in free and perturbative scenarios, including examples with defects. We prove geometrically that the resulting higher operations satisfy expected ``quadratic axioms,'' which can be interpreted physically as a form of Wess-Zumino consistency condition for BRST symmetry. We discuss a higher-dimensional analogue of Kontsevich's formality theorem, which proves the absence of perturbative corrections in TQFTs with two or more topological directions. We discuss at some length the relation of our work to the theory of factorization algebras and provide an introduction to the subject for physicists.

Unravelling the Holomorphic Twist: Central Charges

The holomorphic twist provides a powerful framework to study minimally protected sectors in supersymmetric quantum field theories. We investigate the algebraic structure underlying the holomorphic twist of $\mathcal{N} = 1$ superconformal field theories in four dimensions. In particular, in holomorphically twisted theories the flavour and conformal symmetry algebras are enhanced to infinite-dimensional higher Kac Moody and higher Virasoro symmetry algebras respectively. We explicitly compute the binary and ternary $λ$-brackets and clarify their relation with the underlying infinite-dimensional symmetry algebra. Doing so we show that the central extensions of said symmetry algebras precisely encode the conformal anomalies $a$ and $c$ as well as the flavour central charges of the physical four-dimensional theory. This parallels the familiar story in two dimensions where the conformal anomaly $c$ is encoded in the central extension of the Virasoro algebra.

MTC$[M_3, G]$: 3d Topological Order Labeled by Seifert Manifolds

We propose a correspondence between topological order in 2+1d and Seifert three-manifolds together with a choice of ADE gauge group $G$. Topological order in 2+1d is known to be characterized in terms of modular tensor categories (MTCs), and we thus propose a relation between MTCs and Seifert three-manifolds. The correspondence defines for every Seifert manifold and choice of $G$ a fusion category, which we conjecture to be modular whenever the Seifert manifold has trivial first homology group with coefficients in the center of $G$. The construction determines the spins of anyons and their S-matrix, and provides a constructive way to determine the R- and F-symbols from simple building blocks. We explore the possibility that this correspondence provides an alternative classification of MTCs, which is put to the test by realizing all MTCs (unitary or non-unitary) with rank $r\leq 5$ in terms of Seifert manifolds and a choice of Lie group $G$.

On $\frac18$-BPS black holes and the chiral algebra of $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM

We investigate the existence of $\frac18$-BPS black hole microstates in the $\mathfrak{su}(1,1|2)$ sector of Type IIB string theory on $\mathrm{AdS}_5 \times \mathrm{S}^5$. As will be explained, these states are in one-to-one correspondence with the Schur operators comprising the chiral algebra of $\mathcal{N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills, and a conjecture of Beem et al. implies that the Schur sector only contains graviton operators and hence $\frac18$-BPS black holes do not exist. We scrutinize this conjecture from multiple angles. Concerning the macroscopic counting, we rigorously prove that the flavored Schur index cannot exhibit black hole entropy growth, and provide numerical evidence that the flavored MacDonald index also does not exhibit such growth. Next, we go beyond counting to examine the algebraic structure, beginning by presenting evidence for the well-definedness of the super-$\mathcal{W}$ algebra of Beem et al., then using modular differential equations to argue for an upper bound on the lightest non-graviton operator if existent, and finally performing a systematic construction of cohomologies to recover only gravitons. Along the way, we clarify key aspects of the 4d/2d correspondence using the formalism of the holomorphic topological twist.

Anisotropic Kondo line defect and ODE/IM correspondence

We study the anisotropic Kondo line defects in products of chiral $SU(2)$ WZW models. We propose an ODE/IM correspondence for the anisotropic Kondo problems by considering the four-dimensional Chern Simons theory in the trigonometric case. We verify the claim both by explicit perturbative calculations in the ultraviolet and by exact WKB analysis in the infrared. In doing so, we derived the infrared dynamics of a large class of anisotropic line defects.

Universal Non-Invertible Symmetries

It is well-known that gauging a finite 0-form symmetry in a quantum field theory leads to a dual symmetry generated by topological Wilson line defects. These are described by the representations of the 0-form symmetry group which form a 1-category. We argue that for a d-dimensional quantum field theory the full set of dual symmetries one obtains is in fact much larger and is described by a (d-1)-category, which is formed out of lower-dimensional topological quantum field theories with the same 0-form symmetry. We study in detail a 2-categorical piece of this (d-1)-category described by 2d topological quantum field theories with 0-form symmetry. We further show that the objects of this 2-category are the recently discussed 2d condensation defects constructed from higher-gauging of Wilson lines. Similarly, dual symmetries obtained by gauging any higher-form or higher-group symmetry also form a (d-1)-category formed out of lower-dimensional topological quantum field theories with that higher-form or higher-group symmetry. A particularly interesting case is that of the 2-category of dual symmetries associated to gauging of finite 2-group symmetries, as it describes non-invertible symmetries arising from gauging 0-form symmetries that act on (d-3)-form symmetries. Such non-invertible symmetries were studied recently in the literature via other methods, and our results not only agree with previous results, but our approach also provides a much simpler way of computing various properties of these non-invertible symmetries. We describe how our results can be applied to compute non-invertible symmetries of various classes of gauge theories with continuous disconnected gauge groups in various spacetime dimensions. We also discuss the 2-category formed by 2d condensation defects in any arbitrary quantum field theory.

Feynman Diagrams in Four-Dimensional Holomorphic Theories and the Operatope

We study a class of universal Feynman integrals which appear in four-dimensional holomorphic theories. We recast the integrals as the Fourier transform of a certain polytope in the space of loop momenta (aka the ``Operatope''). We derive a set of quadratic recursion relations which appear to fully determine the final answer. Our strategy can be applied to a very general class of twisted supersymmetric quantum field theories.

Notes on Resonances and Unitarity from Celestial Amplitudes

We study the celestial description of the $O(N)$ sigma model in the large $N$ limit as introduced by Coleman, Jackiw and Politzer. Focusing on three dimensions, we analyze the implications of a UV complete, all-loop order 4-point amplitude of pions in terms of correlation functions defined on the celestial circle. We find these retain many key features from the previously studied tree-level case, such as their relation to Generalized Free Field theories and crossing-symmetry, but also incorporate new properties such as IR/UV softness and S-matrix metastable states. In particular, to understand unitarity, we propose a form of the optical theorem that controls the imaginary part of the correlator based solely on the presence of these resonances. We also explicitly analyze the conformal block expansions and factorization of four-point functions into three-point functions. We find that summing over resonances is key for these factorization properties to hold. We end with some topics for future study.

Kondo line defects and affine Gaudin models

We describe the relation between integrable Kondo problems in products of chiral $SU(2)$ WZW models and affine $SU(2)$ Gaudin models. We propose a full ODE/IM solution of the spectral problem for these models.

Integrable Kondo problems

We discuss the integrability and wall-crossing properties of Kondo problems, where an 1d impurity is coupled to a 2d chiral CFT and triggers a defect RG flow. We review several new and old examples inspired by constructions in four-dimensional Chern-Simons theory and by affine Gaudin models.

3d Abelian Gauge Theories at the Boundary

A four-dimensional Abelian gauge field can be coupled to a 3d CFT with a $U(1)$ symmetry living on a boundary. This coupling gives rise to a continuous family of boundary conformal field theories (BCFT) parametrized by the gauge coupling $τ$ in the upper-half plane and by the choice of the CFT in the decoupling limit $τ\to \infty$. Upon performing an $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ transformation in the bulk and going to the decoupling limit in the new frame, one finds a different 3d CFT on the boundary, related to the original one by Witten's $SL(2, \mathbb{Z})$ action [1]. In particular the cusps on the real $τ$ axis correspond to the 3d gauging of the original CFT. We study general properties of this BCFT. We show how to express bulk one and two-point functions, and the hemisphere free-energy, in terms of the two-point functions of the boundary electric and magnetic currents. We then consider the case in which the 3d CFT is one Dirac fermion. Thanks to 3d dualities this BCFT is mapped to itself by a bulk $S$ transformation, and it also admits a decoupling limit which gives the $O(2)$ model on the boundary. We compute scaling dimensions of boundary operators and the hemisphere free-energy up to two loops. Using an $S$-duality improved ansatz, we extrapolate the perturbative results and find good approximations to the observables of the $O(2)$ model. We also consider examples with other theories on the boundary, such as large-$N_f$ Dirac fermions --for which the extrapolation to strong coupling can be done exactly order-by-order in $1/N_f$-- and a free complex scalar.

Variational Thermal Quantum Simulation via Thermofield Double States

We present a variational approach for quantum simulators to realize finite temperature Gibbs states by preparing thermofield double (TFD) states. Our protocol is motivated by the quantum approximate optimization algorithm (QAOA) and involves alternating time evolution between the Hamiltonian of interest and interactions which entangle the system and its auxiliary counterpart. As a simple example, we demonstrate that thermal states of the 1d classical Ising model at any temperature can be prepared with perfect fidelity using L/2 iterations, where L is system size. We also show that a free fermion TFD can be prepared with nearly optimal efficiency. Given the simplicity and efficiency of the protocol, our approach enables near-term quantum platforms to access finite temperature phenomena via preparation of thermofield double states.

Curious Aspects of Three-Dimensional ${\cal N}=1$ SCFTs

We study the dynamics of certain 3d ${\cal N}=1$ time reversal invariant theories. Such theories often have exact moduli spaces of supersymmetric vacua. We propose several dualities and we test these proposals by comparing the deformations and supersymmetric ground states. First, we consider a theory where time reversal symmetry is only emergent in the infrared and there exists (nonetheless) an exact moduli space of vacua. This theory has a dual description with manifest time reversal symmetry. Second, we consider some surprising facts about ${\cal N}=2$ $U(1)$ gauge theory coupled to two chiral superfields of charge 1. This theory is claimed to have emergent $SU(3)$ global symmetry in the infrared. We propose a dual Wess-Zumino description (i.e. a theory of scalars and fermions but no gauge fields) with manifest $SU(3)$ symmetry but only ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetry. We argue that this Wess-Zumino model must have enhanced supersymmetry in the infrared. Finally, we make some brief comments about the dynamics of ${\cal N}=1$ $SU(N)$ gauge theory coupled to $N_f$ quarks in a time reversal invariant fashion. We argue that for $N_f<N$ there is a moduli space of vacua to all orders in perturbation theory but it is non-perturbatively lifted.

Quantum cluster approach to the spinful Haldane-Hubbard model

We study the spinful fermionic Haldane-Hubbard model at half filling using a combination of quantum cluster methods: cluster perturbation theory (CPT), the variational cluster approximation (VCA), and cluster dynamical mean-field theory (CDMFT). We explore possible zero-temperature phases of the model as a function of on-site repulsive interaction strength and next-nearest-neighbor hopping amplitude and phase. Our approach allows us to access the regime of intermediate interaction strength, where charge fluctuations are significant and effective spin model descriptions may not be justified. Our approach also improves upon mean-field solutions of the Haldane-Hubbard model by retaining local quantum fluctuations and treating them nonperturbatively. We find a correlated topological Chern insulator for weak interactions and a topologically trivial Néel antiferromagnetic insulator for strong interactions. For intermediate interactions, we find that topologically nontrivial Néel antiferromagnetic insulating phases and/or a topologically nontrivial nonmagnetic insulating phase may be stabilized.
