Skills on the Fly: Test-Time Adaptive Skill Synthesis for LLM Agents

Additional test-time compute can give LLM agents access to more past experience, yet expanding the context or adding rollouts does not necessarily yield greater agent capability. We call this challenge test-time compute-to-capability conversion and propose SkillTTA, which retrieves task-relevant training trajectories and synthesizes a temporary skill conditioned on the visible target context for a solver with fixed parameters. To pursue a higher performance ceiling, SkillTTA further uses meta prompt optimization (MPO) to adapt the policy that writes these skills. MPO evaluates candidate prompts on paired tasks and emphasizes informative transitions. It also confines updates to benchmark-specific atomic slots, reducing the variance caused by observing each edit only indirectly through skill synthesis and solver rollout. Across ALFWorld, SpreadsheetBench, BigCodeBench, and WebShop, SkillTTA outperforms state-of-the-art reuse and optimization baselines. It attains a higher performance ceiling at lower compute cost than baseline reuse and sampling strategies.

Twisted-pair unilateral reconnection: A unifying driver for magnetically powered astrophysical bursts

Magnetic reconnection in twisted loops has long been invoked as an engine powering energetic transients from black hole accretion to neutron star mergers, yet never directly observed. Here we report the first direct observation of the complete reconnection of this type in a solar flare. We find a magnetic loop twisted to about 540 degrees, far exceeding the 180 degrees twist assumed in existing simulations. This extreme twist inherently enables efficient multiple X-line reconnection, akin to the role of turbulence in contemporary theory. Remarkably, the intertwined end breaks unilaterally after reconnection (unlike symmetric breaking in simulations), forming open field lines that release hot plasma -- providing a promising mechanism for coronal generation or heating. We first detect hard X-ray emission from the current sheet, directly proving it as a particle accelerator. Moreover, we discover a power-law relationship between quasi-periodic oscillation frequency and magnetic field strength across solar flares, black hole binaries, active galactic nuclei, magnetars, and gamma-ray bursts. This relation identifies twisted-pair unilateral reconnection as a common burst mechanism and provides a natural ruler for cosmic magnetic fields. These findings establish an observational foundation for future reconnection theory and simulations, offering a unified framework for magnetically powered bursts.

MCP-Persona: Benchmarking LLM Agents on Real-World Personal Applications via Environment Simulation

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) has emerged as a transformative standard for connecting large language models (LLMs) with external data sources and tools, and has been rapidly adopted across personal applications and development platforms. However, existing benchmarks predominantly focus on generic information-seeking tools and fail to capture the practical challenges posed by personal social applications, where tools interact with individual accounts or local databases. To bridge this critical gap, we introduce MCP-Persona, the first benchmark specifically designed for evaluating agent performance on real-world, personalized MCP tools. MCP-Persona encompasses a diverse set of widely-used applications, ranging from social media platforms like Reddit and Xiaohongshu (Rednote) to enterprise collaboration suites such as Lark (Feishu) and Slack. Our extensive experiments on various state-of-the-art (SOTA) agents demonstrate their significant struggles with personalized tool use, thereby highlighting the benchmark's crucial role in identifying and addressing these limitations. MCP-Persona is publicly available at https://github.com/wwh0411/MCP-Persona}{https://github.com/wwh0411/MCP-Persona.

Local linear convergence of gradient methods for overparameterized Gaussian mixtures

We study the problem of learning Gaussian mixture models under overparameterization. Prior work has shown that while overparameterization is essential for avoiding spurious local optima and enables global recovery of the ground-truth model using the gradient-EM (expectation-maximization) algorithm, it can dramatically slow down the local rate of convergence. Under certain assumptions on the mixture weights, we show that a standard divergence measure minimized by statistical learning procedures possesses a manifold of slow growth on which the well-known Polyak stepsize reduces the loss geometrically, and design a gradient-based method that converges to minimizers at a locally linear rate. Additionally, we show that our method converges to nearly optimal solutions -- up to a natural misspecification threshold -- for mixtures with arbitrary weights. At a high level, the method alternates between several "short" gradient descent steps that approach the manifold and "long" Polyak steps that contract the distance to minimizers. Our results suggest that slow convergence is not an intrinsic challenge of overparameterization, but can be overcome by exploiting the favorable structure of the loss landscape.

The R2Pub Telescopes for Surveying: An Overview and Performance Evaluation of the System

The R2Pub telescope, built by the Beijing Planetarium, is a 60 cm equatorial binocular telescope located at the Daocheng site of Yunnan Observatories in China, at an altitude of about 4700 m. This paper presents an overview of the R2Pub telescope system, including its design, instrumentation, and survey capabilities, and reports an initial evaluation of its system performance. R2Pub is a prime-focus binocular system, with each optical tube covering a field of view of approximately 18 square degrees. It is designed to detect a wide range of transient and variable sources in the local universe, such as variable stars, eclipsing binaries, supernovae, gamma-ray burst afterglows, tidal disruption events, active galactic nuclei, and other unknown transients. The observatory infrastructure, including the dome, equatorial mount, optical tubes, and associated subsystems, has been fully constructed and installed, and the system has entered the commissioning phase. Benefiting from the high-altitude location, good seeing conditions, and dark sky background at the Daocheng site, performance tests during commissioning show that the R2Pub system can reach a 5-sigma limiting magnitude of about 18.7 mag in the Pan-STARRS r' band with a 60 s exposure. Ongoing observations with R2Pub are expected to contribute to studies of variable and transient phenomena and to enhance public outreach in astronomy. The binocular design enables simultaneous dual-band observations, providing instantaneous color information for transient sources and improving the classification and physical characterization of their properties and evolution.

The First Scientific Flight and Observations of the 50-mm Balloon-Borne White-Light Coronagraph

A 50-mm balloon-borne white-light coronagraph (BBWLC) to observe whitelight solar corona over the altitude range from 1.08 to 1.50 solar radii has recently been indigenously developed by Yunnan Observatories in collaboration with Shangdong University (in Weihai) and Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics and Physics, which will significantly improve the ability of China to detect and measure inner corona. On 2022 October 4, its first scientific flight took place at the Dachaidan area in Qinghai province of China. We describe briefly the BBWLC mission including its optical design, mechanical structure, pointing system, the first flight and results associated with the data processing approach. Preliminary analysis of the data shows that BBWLC imaged the Kcorona with three streamer structures on the west limb of the Sun. To further confirm the coronal signals obtained by BBWLC, comparisonswere made with observations of the Kcoronagraph of the High Altitude Observatory and the Atmospheric ImagingAssembly on board the Solar Dynamics Observatory. We conclude that BBWLC eventually observed the white-light corona in its first scientific flight.

The Solar Close Observations and Proximity Experiments (SCOPE) mission

The Solar Close Observations and Proximity Experiments (SCOPE) mission will send a spacecraft into the solar atmosphere at a low altitude of just 5 R_sun from the solar center. It aims to elucidate the mechanisms behind solar eruptions and coronal heating, and to directly measure the coronal magnetic field. The mission will perform in situ measurements of the current sheet between coronal mass ejections and their associated solar flares, and energetic particles produced by either reconnection or fast-mode shocks driven by coronal mass ejections. This will help to resolve the nature of reconnections in current sheets, and energetic particle acceleration regions. To investigate coronal heating, the mission will observe nano-flares on scales smaller than 70 km in the solar corona and regions smaller than 40 km in the photosphere, where magnetohydrodynamic waves originate. To study solar wind acceleration mechanisms, the mission will also track the process of ion charge-state freezing in the solar wind. A key achievement will be the observation of the coronal magnetic field at unprecedented proximity to the solar photosphere. The polar regions will also be observed at close range, and the inner edge of the solar system dust disk may be identified for the first time. This work presents the detailed background, science, and mission concept of SCOPE and discusses how we aim to address the questions mentioned above.

The Effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Transportation Systems in New York City and Seattle, USA

This paper continues to highlight trends in mobility and sociability in New York City (NYC), and supplements them with similar data from Seattle, WA, two of the cities most affected by COVID-19 in the U.S. Seattle may be further along in its recovery from the pandemic and ensuing lockdown than NYC, and may offer some insights into how travel patterns change. Finally, some preliminary findings from cities in China are discussed, two months following the lifting of their lockdowns, to offer a glimpse further into the future of recovery.

Integrative Density Forecast and Uncertainty Quantification of Wind Power Generation

The volatile nature of wind power generation creates challenges in achieving secure power grid operations. It is, therefore, necessary to make accurate wind power prediction and its uncertainty quantification. Wind power forecasting usually depends on wind speed prediction and the wind-to-power conversion process. However, most current wind power prediction models only consider portions of the uncertainty. This paper develops an integrative framework for predicting wind power density, considering uncertainties arising from both wind speed prediction and the wind-to-power conversion process. Specifically, we model wind speed using the inhomogeneous Geometric Brownian Motion and convert the wind speed prediction density into the wind power density in a closed-form. The resulting wind power density allows quantifying prediction uncertainties through prediction intervals. To forecast the power output, we minimize the expected prediction cost with (unequal) penalties on the overestimation and underestimation. We show the predictive power of the proposed approach using data from multiple operating wind farms located at different sites.

Extracting Trips from Multi-Sourced Data for Mobility Pattern Analysis: An App-Based Data Example

Passively-generated data, such as GPS data and cellular data, bring tremendous opportunities for human mobility analysis and transportation applications. Since their primary purposes are often non-transportation related, the passively-generated data need to be processed to extract trips. Most existing trip extraction methods rely on data that are generated via a single positioning technology such as GPS or triangulation through cellular towers (thereby called single-sourced data), and methods to extract trips from data generated via multiple positioning technologies (or, multi-sourced data) are absent. And yet, multi-sourced data are now increasingly common. Generated using multiple technologies (e.g., GPS, cellular network- and WiFi-based), multi-sourced data contain high variances in their temporal and spatial properties. In this study, we propose a 'Divide, Conquer and Integrate' (DCI) framework to extract trips from multi-sourced data. We evaluate the proposed framework by applying it to an app-based data, which is multi-sourced and has high variances in both location accuracy and observation interval (i.e. time interval between two consecutive observations). On a manually labeled sample of the app-based data, the framework outperforms the state-of-the-art SVM model that is designed for GPS data. The effectiveness of the framework is also illustrated by consistent mobility patterns obtained from the app-based data and an externally collected household travel survey data for the same region and the same period.

An Interactive Data Visualization and Analytics Tool to Evaluate Mobility and Sociability Trends During COVID-19

The COVID-19 outbreak has dramatically changed travel behavior in affected cities. The C2SMART research team has been investigating the impact of COVID-19 on mobility and sociability. New York City (NYC) and Seattle, two of the cities most affected by COVID-19 in the U.S. were included in our initial study. An all-in-one dashboard with data mining and cloud computing capabilities was developed for interactive data analytics and visualization to facilitate the understanding of the impact of the outbreak and corresponding policies such as social distancing on transportation systems. This platform is updated regularly and continues to evolve with the addition of new data, impact metrics, and visualizations to assist public and decision-makers to make informed decisions. This paper presents the architecture of the COVID related mobility data dashboard and preliminary mobility and sociability metrics for NYC and Seattle.

An Alternative Data-Driven Prediction Approach Based on Real Option Theories

This paper presents a new prediction model for time series data by integrating a time-varying Geometric Brownian Motion model with a pricing mechanism used in financial engineering. Typical time series models such as Auto-Regressive Integrated Moving Average assumes a linear correlation structure in time series data. When a stochastic process is highly volatile, such an assumption can be easily violated, leading to inaccurate predictions. We develop a new prediction model that can flexibly characterize a time-varying volatile process without assuming linearity. We formulate the prediction problem as an optimization problem with unequal overestimation and underestimation costs. Based on real option theories developed in finance, we solve the optimization problem and obtain a predicted value, which can minimize the expected prediction cost. We evaluate the proposed approach using multiple datasets obtained from real-life applications including manufacturing, finance, and environment. The numerical results demonstrate that the proposed model shows competitive prediction capability, compared with alternative approaches.
