COFT-AD: COntrastive Fine-Tuning for Few-Shot Anomaly Detection

Existing approaches towards anomaly detection~(AD) often rely on a substantial amount of anomaly-free data to train representation and density models. However, large anomaly-free datasets may not always be available before the inference stage; in which case an anomaly detection model must be trained with only a handful of normal samples, a.k.a. few-shot anomaly detection (FSAD). In this paper, we propose a novel methodology to address the challenge of FSAD which incorporates two important techniques. Firstly, we employ a model pre-trained on a large source dataset to initialize model weights. Secondly, to ameliorate the covariate shift between source and target domains, we adopt contrastive training to fine-tune on the few-shot target domain data. To learn suitable representations for the downstream AD task, we additionally incorporate cross-instance positive pairs to encourage a tight cluster of the normal samples, and negative pairs for better separation between normal and synthesized negative samples. We evaluate few-shot anomaly detection on on 3 controlled AD tasks and 4 real-world AD tasks to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Coded Backscattering Communication with LTE Pilots as Ambient Signal

The 3GPP has recently conducted a study on the Ambient Internet of Things (AIoT), with a particular emphasis on examining backscatter communications as one of the primary techniques under consideration. Previous investigations into Ambient Backscatter Communications (AmBC) within the long term evolution (LTE) downlink have shown that it is feasible to utilize the user equipment channel estimator as a receiver for demodulating frequency shift keyed (FSK) messages transmitted by the backscatter devices. In practical deployment scenarios, the backscattered link often experiences a low signal-to-noise ratio, leading to subpar bit error rate (BER) performance in the case of uncoded transmissions. In this paper, we propose the adoption of the same convolutional coding methodology for backscatter links that is already employed for LTE downlink control signals. This approach facilitates the reuse of identical demodulation functions at the modem for both control signals and backscattered AIoT messages. To assess the performance of the proposed scheme, we conducted experiments utilizing real LTE downlink signals generated by a mobile operator within an office environment. When compared to uncoded FSK, convolutional channel coding delivers a notable gain of approximately 6 dB at a BER of $10^{-3}$. Consequently, the AmBC system demonstrates a high level of reliability, achieving a BER of $10^{-3}$ at a Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) of 5 dB.

Zero-Energy-Device for 6G: First Real-Time Backscatter Communication thanks to the Detection of Pilots from an Ambient Commercial Cellular Network

Ambient backscatter communication technology (AmBC) and a novel device category called zero-energy devices (ZED) have recently emerged as potential components for the forthcoming 6th generation (6G) networks. A ZED communicates with a smartphone without emitting additional radio waves, by backscattering ambient waves from base stations. Thanks to its very low consumption, a ZED powers itself by harvesting ambient light energy. However, the time variations of data traffic in cellular networks prevents AmBC to work properly. Recent works have demonstrated experimentally that a backscatter device could be detected by listening only ambient pilot signals (which are steady) instead of the whole ambient signal (which is bursty) of 4G. However, these experiments were run with a 4G base station emulator and a bulky energy greedy backscatter device. In this paper, for the first time, we demonstrate real-time AmBC on the field, with Orange commercial 4G network as ambient source and Orange Zero-Energy Device.

COVID-19 spreading patterns in family clusters reveal gender roles in China

Unfolding different gender roles is preceding the efforts to reduce gender inequality. This paper analyzes COVID-19 family clusters outside Hubei Province in mainland China during the 2020 outbreak, revealing significant differences in spreading patterns across gender and family roles. Results show that men are more likely to be the imported cases of a family cluster, and women are more likely to be infected within the family. This finding provides new supportive evidence of the men as breadwinner and women as homemaker (MBWH) gender roles in China. Further analyses reveal that the MBWH pattern is stronger in eastern than in western China, stronger for younger than for elder people. This paper offers not only valuable references for formulating gender-differentiated epidemic prevention policies but also an exemplification for studying group differences in similar scenarios.

Ambient FSK Backscatter Communications using LTE Cell Specific Reference Signals

Long Term Evolution (LTE) signal is ubiquitously present in electromagnetic (EM) background environment, which make it an attractive signal source for the ambient backscatter communications (AmBC). In this paper, we propose a system, in which a backscatter device (BD) introduces artificial Doppler shift to the channel which is larger than the natural Doppler but still small enough such that it can be tracked by the channel estimator at the User Equipment (UE). Channel estimation is done using the downlink cell specific reference signals (CRS) that are present regardless the UE being attached to the network or not. FSK was selected due to its robust operation in a fading channel. We describe the whole AmBC system, use two receivers. Finally, numerical simulations and measurements are provided to validate the proposed FSK AmBC performance.

Ambient backscatter communications using LTE cell specific reference signals

Long Term Evolution (LTE) systems provide ubiquitous coverage for mobile communications, which makes it a promising candidate to be used as a signal source in the ambient backscatter communications. In this paper, we propose a system in which a backscatter device modulates the ambient LTE signal by changing its reflection coefficient and the receiver uses the LTE Cell Specific Reference Signals (CRS) to estimate the channel and demodulates the backscattered signal from the obtained channel impulse response estimates. We first outline the overall system, discuss the receiver operation, and then provide experimental evidence on the practicality of the proposed system.

The Gender Pay Gap in China: Insights from a Discrimination Perspective

Equal pay is an essential component of gender equality, one of the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations. Using resume data of over ten million Chinese online job seekers in 2015, we study the current gender pay gap in China. The results show that on average women only earned 71.57\% of what men earned in China. The gender pay gap exists across all age groups and educational levels. Contrary to the commonly held view that developments in education, economy, and a more open culture would reduce the gender pay gap, the fusion analysis of resume data and socio-economic data presents that they have not helped reach the gender pay equality in China. China seems to be stuck in a place where traditional methods cannot make further progress. Our analysis further shows that 81.47\% of the variance in the gender pay gap can be potentially attributed to discrimination. In particular, compared with the unmarried, both the gender pay gap itself and proportion potentially attributed to discrimination of the married are larger, indicating that married women suffer greater inequality and more discrimination than unmarried ones. Taken together, we suggest that more research attention should be paid to the effect of discrimination in understanding gender pay gap based on the family constraint theory. We also suggest the Chinese government to increase investment in family-supportive policies and grants in addition to female education.

Revisiting Pretraining for Semi-Supervised Learning in the Low-Label Regime

Semi-supervised learning (SSL) addresses the lack of labeled data by exploiting large unlabeled data through pseudolabeling. However, in the extremely low-label regime, pseudo labels could be incorrect, a.k.a. the confirmation bias, and the pseudo labels will in turn harm the network training. Recent studies combined finetuning (FT) from pretrained weights with SSL to mitigate the challenges and claimed superior results in the low-label regime. In this work, we first show that the better pretrained weights brought in by FT account for the state-of-the-art performance, and importantly that they are universally helpful to off-the-shelf semi-supervised learners. We further argue that direct finetuning from pretrained weights is suboptimal due to covariate shift and propose a contrastive target pretraining step to adapt model weights towards target dataset. We carried out extensive experiments on both classification and segmentation tasks by doing target pretraining then followed by semi-supervised finetuning. The promising results validate the efficacy of target pretraining for SSL, in particular in the low-label regime.

Quantifying human mixing patterns in Chinese provinces outside Hubei after the 2020 lockdown was lifted

Contact patterns play a key role in the spread of respiratory infectious diseases in human populations. During the COVID-19 pandemic the regular contact patterns of the population has been disrupted due to social distancing both imposed by the authorities and individual choices. Here we present the results of a contact survey conducted in Chinese provinces outside Hubei in March 2020, right after lockdowns were lifted. We then leveraged the estimated mixing patterns to calibrate a model of SARS-CoV-2 transmission, which was used to estimate different metrics of COVID-19 burden by age. Study participants reported 2.3 contacts per day (IQR: 1.0-3.0) and the mean per-contact duration was 7.0 hours (IQR: 1.0-10.0). No significant differences were observed between provinces, the number of recorded contacts did not show a clear-cut trend by age, and most of the recorded contacts occurred with family members (about 78%). Our findings suggest that, despite the lockdown was no longer in place at the time of the survey, people were still heavily limiting their contacts as compared to the pre-pandemic situation. Moreover, the obtained modeling results highlight the importance of considering age-contact patterns to estimate COVID-19 burden.

Preliminary prediction of the basic reproduction number of the Wuhan novel coronavirus 2019-nCoV

Objectives.--To estimate the basic reproduction number of the Wuhan novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV). Methods.--Based on the susceptible-exposed-infected-removed (SEIR) compartment model and the assumption that the infectious cases with symptoms occurred before January 25, 2020 are resulted from free propagation without intervention, we estimate the basic reproduction number of 2019-nCoV according to the reported confirmed cases and suspected cases, as well as the theoretical estimated number of infected cases by other research teams, together with some epidemiological determinants learned from the severe acute respiratory syndrome. Results The basic reproduction number falls between 2.8 to 3.3 by using the real-time reports on the number of 2019-nCoV infected cases from People's Daily in China, and falls between 3.2 and 3.9 on the basis of the predicted number of infected cases from colleagues. Conclusions.--The early transmission ability of 2019-nCoV is closed to or slightly higher than SARS. It is a controllable disease with moderate-high transmissibility. Timely and effective control measures are needed to suppress the further transmissions. Notes Added.--Using a newly reported epidemiological determinants for early 2019-nCoV, the estimated basic reproduction number is in the range [2.2,3.0].
