Convexification Numerical Method for the Retrospective Problem of Mean Field Games

The convexification numerical method with the rigorously established global convergence property is constructed for a problem for the Mean Field Games System of the second order. This is the problem of the retrospective analysis of a game of infinitely many rational players. In addition to traditional initial and terminal conditions, one extra terminal condition is assumed to be known. Carleman estimates and a Carleman Weight Function play the key role. Numerical experiments demonstrate a good performance for complicated functions. Various versions of the convexification have been actively used by this research team for a number of years to numerically solve coefficient inverse problems.

Convexification Numerical Method for a Coefficient Inverse Problem for the Riemannian Radiative Transfer Equation

The first globally convergent numerical method for a Coefficient Inverse Problem (CIP) for the Riemannian Radiative Transfer Equation (RRTE) is constructed. This is a version of the so-called \textquotedblleft convexification" method, which has been pursued by this research group for a number of years for some other CIPs for PDEs. Those PDEs are significantly different from the RRTE. The presence of the Carleman Weight Function (CWF) in the numerical scheme is the key element which insures the global convergence. Convergence analysis is presented along with the results of numerical experiments, which confirm the theory. RRTE governs the propagation of photons in the diffuse medium in the case when they propagate along geodesic lines between their collisions. Geodesic lines are generated by the spatially variable dielectric constant of the medium.

Hölder Stability and Uniqueness for The Mean Field Games System via Carleman Estimates

We are concerned with the mathematical study of the Mean Field Games system (MFGS). In the conventional setup, the MFGS is a system of two coupled nonlinear parabolic PDEs of the second order in a backward-forward manner, namely one terminal and one initial conditions are prescribed respectively for the value function and the population density. In this paper, we show that uniqueness of solutions to the MFGS can be guaranteed if, among all four possible terminal and initial conditions, eitheir only two terminal or only two initial conditions are given. In both cases Hölder stability estimates are proven. This means that he accuracies of the solutions are estimated in terms of the given data. Moreover, these estimates readily imply uniqueness of corresponding problems for the MFGS. The main mathematical apparatus to establish those results is two new Carleman estimates, which may find application in other contexts associated with coupled parabolic PDEs.

Convexification for the Viscocity Solution for a Coefficient Inverse Problem for the Radiative Transfer Equation

A Coefficient Inverse Problem for the radiative transport equation is considered. The globally convergent numerical method, the so-called convexification, is developed. For the first time, the viscosity solution is considered for a boundary value problem for the resulting system of two coupled partial differential equations. A Lipschitz stability estimate is proved for this boundary value problem using a Carleman estimate for the Laplace operator. Next, the global convergence analysis is provided via that Carleman estimate. Results of numerical experiments demonstrate a high computational efficiency of this approach.

Locating multiple magnetized anomalies by geomagnetic monitoring

The presence of magnetized anomalies in the shell of the Earth interrupts its geomagnetic field. We consider the inverse problem of identifying the anomalies by monitoring the variation of the geomagnetic field. Motivated by the theoretical unique identifiability result in [5], we develop a novel numerical scheme of locating multiple magnetized anomalies. In our study, we do not assume that the source that generates the geomagnetic field, and the medium configurations of the Earth's core and the magnetized anomalies are a-priori known. The core of the reconstruction scheme is a novel imaging functional whose quantitative behaviours can be used to identify the anomalies. Both rigorous analysis and extensive numerical experiments are provided to verify the effectiveness and promising features of the proposed reconstruction scheme.

A priori error estimates of two fully discrete coupled schemes for Biot's consolidation model

This paper concentrates on a priori error estimates of two fully discrete coupled schemes for Biot's consolidation model based on the three-field formulation introduced by Oyarzua et al. (SIAM Journal on Numerical Analysis, 2016). The spatial discretizations are based on the Taylor-Hood finite elements combined with Lagrange elements for the three primary variables. For time discretization, we consider two methods. One uses the backward Euler method, and the other applies a combination of the backward Euler and Crank-Nicolson methods. A priori error estimates show that the two schemes are unconditionally convergent with optimal error orders. Detailed numerical experiments are presented to validate the theoretical analysis.

A Large-scale Multiple-objective Method for Black-box Attack against Object Detection

Recent studies have shown that detectors based on deep models are vulnerable to adversarial examples, even in the black-box scenario where the attacker cannot access the model information. Most existing attack methods aim to minimize the true positive rate, which often shows poor attack performance, as another sub-optimal bounding box may be detected around the attacked bounding box to be the new true positive one. To settle this challenge, we propose to minimize the true positive rate and maximize the false positive rate, which can encourage more false positive objects to block the generation of new true positive bounding boxes. It is modeled as a multi-objective optimization (MOP) problem, of which the generic algorithm can search the Pareto-optimal. However, our task has more than two million decision variables, leading to low searching efficiency. Thus, we extend the standard Genetic Algorithm with Random Subset selection and Divide-and-Conquer, called GARSDC, which significantly improves the efficiency. Moreover, to alleviate the sensitivity to population quality in generic algorithms, we generate a gradient-prior initial population, utilizing the transferability between different detectors with similar backbones. Compared with the state-of-art attack methods, GARSDC decreases by an average 12.0 in the mAP and queries by about 1000 times in extensive experiments. Our codes can be found at https://github.com/LiangSiyuan21/ GARSDC.

A $C^{0}$ interior penalty method for $m$th-Laplace equation

In this paper, we propose a $C^{0}$ interior penalty method for $m$th-Laplace equation on bounded Lipschitz polyhedral domain in $\mathbb{R}^{d}$, where $m$ and $d$ can be any positive integers. The standard $H^{1}$-conforming piecewise $r$-th order polynomial space is used to approximate the exact solution $u$, where $r$ can be any integer greater than or equal to $m$. Unlike the interior penalty method in [T.~Gudi and M.~Neilan, {\em An interior penalty method for a sixth-order elliptic equation}, IMA J. Numer. Anal., \textbf{31(4)} (2011), pp. 1734--1753], we avoid computing $D^{m}$ of numerical solution on each element and high order normal derivatives of numerical solution along mesh interfaces. Therefore our method can be easily implemented. After proving discrete $H^{m}$-norm bounded by the natural energy semi-norm associated with our method, we manage to obtain stability and optimal convergence with respect to discrete $H^{m}$-norm. Numerical experiments validate our theoretical estimate.

Convexification for a CIP for the RTE]{Convexification Numerical Method for a Coefficient Inverse Problem for the Radiative Transport Equation

An $\left( n+1\right) -$D coefficient inverse problem for the radiative stationary transport equation is considered for the first time. A globally convergent so-called convexification numerical \ method is developed and its convergence analysis is provided. The analysis is based on a Carleman estimate. In particular, convergence analysis implies a certain uniqueness theorem. Extensive numerical studies in the 2-D case are presented.

An Iterative Decoupled Algorithm with Unconditional Stability for Biot Model

This paper is concerned with numerical algorithms for Biot model. By introducing an intermediate variable, the classical 2-field Biot model is written into a 3-field formulation. Based on such a 3-field formulation, we propose a coupled algorithm, some time-extrapolation based decoupled algorithms, and an iterative decoupled algorithm. Our focus is the analysis of the iterative decoupled algorithm. It is shown that the convergence of the iterative decoupled algorithm requires no extra assumptions on physical parameters or stabilization parameters. Numerical experiments are provided to demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method.

A version of the convexification globally convergent numerical method is constructed for a coefficient inverse problem for a wave-like partial differential equation. The presence of the Carleman Weight Function in the corresponding Tikhonov-like cost functional ensures the global strict convexity of this functional. Numerical results are presented to illustrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed method.

Sparse Signal Recovery from Phaseless Measurements via Hard Thresholding Pursuit

In this paper, we consider the sparse phase retrieval problem, recovering an $s$-sparse signal $\bm{x}^{\natural}\in\mathbb{R}^n$ from $m$ phaseless samples $y_i=|\langle\bm{x}^{\natural},\bm{a}_i\rangle|$ for $i=1,\ldots,m$. Existing sparse phase retrieval algorithms are usually first-order and hence converge at most linearly. Inspired by the hard thresholding pursuit (HTP) algorithm in compressed sensing, we propose an efficient second-order algorithm for sparse phase retrieval. Our proposed algorithm is theoretically guaranteed to give an exact sparse signal recovery in finite (in particular, at most $O(\log m + \log(\|\bm{x}^{\natural}\|_2/|x_{\min}^{\natural}|))$) steps, when $\{\bm{a}_i\}_{i=1}^{m}$ are i.i.d. standard Gaussian random vector with $m\sim O(s\log(n/s))$ and the initialization is in a neighborhood of the underlying sparse signal. Together with a spectral initialization, our algorithm is guaranteed to have an exact recovery from $O(s^2\log n)$ samples. Since the computational cost per iteration of our proposed algorithm is the same order as popular first-order algorithms, our algorithm is extremely efficient. Experimental results show that our algorithm can be several times faster than existing sparse phase retrieval algorithms.

Boundary homogenization of a class of obstacle problems

We study homogenization of a boundary obstacle problem on $ C^{1,α} $ domain $D$ for some elliptic equations with uniformly elliptic coefficient matrices $γ$. For any $ ε\in\mathbb{R}_+$, $\partial D=Γ\cup Σ$, $Γ\cap Σ=\emptyset $ and $ S_ε\subset Σ$ with suitable assumptions,\ we prove that as $ε$ tends to zero, the energy minimizer $ u^ε $ of $ \int_{D} |γ\nabla u|^{2} dx $, subject to $ u\geq φ$ on $ S_{\varepsilon} $, up to a subsequence, converges weakly in $ H^{1}(D) $ to $ \widetilde{u} $ which minimizes the energy functional $\int_{D}|γ\nabla u|^{2}+\int_Σ (u-φ)^{2}_{-}μ(x) dS_{x}$, where $μ(x)$ depends on the structure of $S_ε$ and $ φ$ is any given function in $C^{\infty}(\overline{D})$.

Computation of transmission eigenvalues by the regularized Schur complement for the boundary integral operators

This paper is devoted to the computation of transmission eigenvalues in the inverse acoustic scattering theory. This problem is first reformulated as a two by two boundary system of boundary integral equations. Next, utilizing the Schur complement technique, we develop a Schur complement operator with regularization to obtain a reduced system of boundary integral equations. The Nyström discretization is then used to obtain an eigenvalue problem for a matrix. We employ the recursive integral method for the numerical computation of the matrix eigenvalue. Numerical results show that the proposed method is efficient and reduces computational costs.

Linear Lavrent'ev Integral Equation for the Numerical Solution of a Nonlinear Coefficient Inverse Problem

For the first time, we develop a convergent numerical method for the llinear integral equation derived by M.M. Lavrent'ev in 1964 with the goal to solve a coefficient inverse problem for a wave-like equation in 3D. The data are non overdetermined. Convergence analysis is presented along with the numerical results. An intriguing feature of the Lavrent'ev equation is that, without any linearization, it reduces a highly nonlinear coefficient inverse problem to a linear integral equation of the first kind. Nevertheless, numerical results for that equation, which use the data generated for that coefficient inverse problem, show a good reconstruction accuracy. This is similar with the classical Gelfand-Levitan equation derived in 1951, which is valid in the 1D case.

Determining a random Schrödinger operator: both potential and source are random

We study an inverse scattering problem associated with a Schrödinger system where both the potential and source terms are random and unknown. The well-posedness of the forward scattering problem is first established in a proper sense. We then derive two unique recovery results in determining the rough strengths of the random source and the random potential, by using the corresponding far-field data. The first recovery result shows that a single realization of the passive scattering measurements uniquely recovers the rough strength of the random source. The second one shows that, by a single realization of the backscattering data, the rough strength of the random potential can be recovered. The ergodicity is used to establish the single realization recovery. The asymptotic arguments in our study are based on the theories of pseudodifferential operators and microlocal analysis.

Inverse source problems in an inhomogeneous medium with a single far-field pattern

This paper concerns time-harmonic inverse source problems with a single far-field pattern in two dimensions, where the source term is compactly supported in an a priori given inhomogeneous background medium. For convex-polygonal source terms, we prove that the source support together with the zeroth and first order derivatives of the source function at corner points can be uniquely determined. Further, we prove that an admissible set of source functions (including harmonic functions) having a convex-polygonal support can be uniquely identified by a single far-field pattern. A class of radiating sources is characterized and the extension of the radiated field across a corner point is proven impossible. The corner scattering theory leads to a data-driven inversion scheme for imaging an arbitrarily convex-polygonal source support.

Modeling the Control of COVID-19: Impact of Policy Interventions and Meteorological Factors

In this paper, we propose a dynamical model to describe the transmission of COVID-19, which is spreading in China and many other countries. To avoid a larger outbreak in the worldwide, Chinese government carried out a series of strong strategies to prevent the situation from deteriorating. Home quarantine is the most important one to prevent the spread of COVID-19. In order to estimate the effect of population quarantine, we divide the population into seven categories for simulation. Based on a Least-Squares procedure and officially published data, the estimation of parameters for the proposed model is given. Numerical simulations show that the proposed model can describe the transmission of COVID-19 accurately, the corresponding prediction of the trend of the disease is given. The home quarantine strategy plays an important role in controlling the disease spread and speeding up the decline of COVID-19. The control reproduction number of most provinces in China are analyzed and discussed adequately. We should pay attention to that, though the epidemic is in decline in China, the disease still has high risk of human-to-human transmission continuously. Once the control strategy is removed, COVID-19 may become a normal epidemic disease just like flu. Further control for the disease is still necessary, we focus on the relationship between the spread rate of the virus and the meteorological conditions. A comprehensive meteorological index is introduced to represent the impact of meteorological factors on both high and low migration groups. As the progress on the new vaccine, we design detail vaccination strategies for COVID-19 in different control phases and show the effectiveness of efficient vaccination. Once the vaccine comes into use, the numerical simulation provide a promptly prospective research.
