Quadratic Quantum Polarimetry with Entangled Photon Pairs

Conventional polarimetry, including schemes leveraging entangled light, characterizes optical samples through linear transformations of polarization states. We introduce a two-photon probing approach in which both photons of an entangled pair interact with the same depolarizing medium simultaneously. In this regime, the transformation of the two-photon polarization correlations becomes quadratic in the Mueller matrix, enabling access to second-order polarization information beyond conventional polarimetry. We develop a theoretical framework linking the Mueller matrix to the evolution of the two-photon polarization correlation tensor and show that depolarization induces quadratic degradation of entanglement and state purity. Experiments using polarization-entangled photon pairs transmitted through controlled scattering media confirm the predicted response and reveal enhanced sensitivity to polarization scrambling compared with single-photon probing. These results establish two-photon probing as a higher-order quantum polarimetric modality for characterizing polarization channels.

Quantum Phase Gradient Imaging Using a Nonlocal Metasurface System

Quantum phase imaging enables the analysis of transparent samples with thickness and refractive index variations in scenarios requiring precise measurements under low-light conditions. Here, we present a compact quantum phase-gradient imaging system integrating a lithium niobate (LiNbO3) metasurface for generating spatially entangled photon pairs and a silicon (Si) metasurface for phase gradient extraction. By leveraging nonlocal resonances, the LiNbO3 metasurface enables efficient spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) with all-optically angularly tunable emission, while the Si metasurface provides a nearly linear optical transfer function (OTF) that differentiates the photon wavefunction and extracts phase gradients.Experimental proof-of-concept results demonstrate the imaging of up to 25~rad/mm phase gradients, achieving 89% similarity with the reference values. The pixel resolution of the system can be potentially enhanced by orders of magnitude by increasing the metasurface dimensions and resonance quality factor. Our work showcases the application of metasurfaces in both generating and detecting quantum states and establishes a new paradigm for portable quantum phase-gradient imaging, with potential applications in quantum sensing, microscopy, and LiDAR technology.

Quantum Imaging Using Spatially Entangled Photon Pairs from a Nonlinear Metasurface

Nonlinear metasurfaces with subwavelength thickness were recently established as versatile platforms for the enhanced and tailorable generation of entangled photon pairs. The small dimensions and inherent stability of integrated metasurface sources are attractive for free-space applications in quantum communications, sensing, and imaging, yet this remarkable potential remained unexplored. Here, we formulate and experimentally demonstrate the unique benefits and practical potential of nonlinear metasurfaces for quantum imaging at infrared wavelengths, facilitating an efficient protocol combining ghost and all-optical scanning imaging. The metasurface incorporates a subwavelength-scale silica metagrating on a lithium niobate thin film. Its distinguishing feature is the capability to all-optically scan the photon emission angle in the direction across the grating simply by tuning the pump beam wavelength. Simultaneously, the photon emission is broad and anti-correlated along the grating direction, allowing for ghost imaging. Thereby, we reconstruct the images of 2D objects using just a 1D detector array in the idler path and a bucket detector in the signal path, by recording the dependencies of photon coincidences on the pump wavelength. Our results reveal new possibilities for quantum imaging with ultra-large field of view and improved imaging resolution as compared to photon pairs from conventional bulky crystals. The demonstrated concept can be extended to multi-wavelength operation and other applications such as quantum object tracking, paving the way for advancements in quantum technologies using ultra-compact nanostructured metasurfaces.

Effect of a hybrid transition moment on Stark-modulated photon echoes in Er$^{3+}$:Y$_2$SiO$_5$

The 1538 nm ${}^4$I$_{15/2}$ - ${}^4$I$_{13/2}$ transition of Er$^{3+}$ has an unusual hybrid electric-magnetic dipole character, and signatures of the hybrid moment can be expected in coherent transient measurements. Here, we investigate the effect of the hybrid moment in both sites of Er$^{3+}$:Y$_2$SiO$_5$ on Stark-modulated photon echo measurements, showing that it results in a reduction of visibility of the modulated signal as well as phase and polarization shifts. We interpret these effects using a simple optical Bloch equation model, showing that site 1 has a strongly mixed moment and site 2 is predominantly magnetic dipole. We discuss the implications of the hybrid moment for quantum information applications of quantum memories. We also use the echo measurements to extract the Stark shift of the optical transition along three orthogonal directions, finding values between 10.50 and 11.93 kHz/(V/cm) for site 1 and 1.61 and 15.35 kHz/(V/cm) for site 2. We observe a modification of the Zeeman shift by the electric field in both sites and discuss how this may be used to electrically control Er$^{3+}$ spin qubits.
