Evolution of the curvature perturbation during and after multi-field inflation

We study the evolution of the curvature perturbation on the super-horizon scales starting from the inflationary epoch until there remains only a single dynamical degree of freedom, presureless matter, in the universe. We consider the cosmic inflation driven by a multiple number of the inflaton fields, which decay into both radiation and pressureless matter components. We present a complete set of the exact background and perturbation equations which describe the evolution of the universe throughout its history. By applying these equations to the simple but reasonable model of multi-field chaotic inflation, we explicitly show that the total curvature perturbation is continuously varying because of the non-adiabatic components of the curvature perturbation generated by the multiple inflaton fields throughout the whole evolution of the universe. We also provide an useful analytic estimation of the total as well as matter and radiation curvature perturbations, assuming that matter is completely decoupled from radiation from the beginning. The resulting isocurvature perturbation between matter and radiation is at most sub-percent level when the masses of the inflaton fields are distributed between $10^{-6}m_{pl}$ and $10^{-5}m_{pl}$. We find that this result is robust unless we use non-trivial decay rates, and that thus, in general, it is hard to obtain large matter-radiation isocurvature perturbation. Also, by using the $δ{N}$ formalism, we point out that the inflationary calculation, especially when involving multiple inflaton fields, is likely to lose the potentially important post-inflationary evolution which can modify the resulting curvature perturbation.

Punctuated inflation and the low CMB multipoles

We investigate inflationary scenarios driven by a class of potentials which are similar in form to those that arise in certain minimal supersymmetric extensions of the standard model. We find that these potentials allow a brief period of departure from inflation sandwiched between two stages of slow roll inflation. We show that such a background behavior leads to a step like feature in the scalar power spectrum. We set the scales such that the drop in the power spectrum occurs at a length scale that corresponds to the Hubble radius today--a feature that seems necessary to explain the lower power observed in the quadrupole moment of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) anisotropies. We perform a Markov Chain Monte Carlo analysis to determine the values of the model parameters that provide the best fit to the recent WMAP 5-year data for the CMB angular power spectrum. We find that an inflationary spectrum with a suppression of power at large scales that we obtain leads to a much better fit (with just one extra parameter, $χ_{\rm eff}^{2}$ improves by 6.62) of the observed data when compared to the best fit reference $Λ$CDM model with a featureless, power law, primordial spectrum.

Curvature perturbation spectrum from false vacuum inflation

In the inflationary cosmology it occurs frequently that the inflaton field is trapped in a local, transient minimum with non-zero vacuum energy. The difficulty regarding the curvature perturbation produced during such a stage is that classically the inflaton does not move so that the comoving hypersurfaces are not well defined at linear order in the scalar field perturbation. In this paper, assuming a mechanism of trapping which resembles a high temperature correction to the potential, we explicitly calculate for the first time the resulting power spectrum of the curvature perturbation by evaluating the quantum two-point correlation function directly. The spectrum is steeply blue with the spectral index n_R = 4.

Systematics of multi-field effects at the end of warped brane inflation

We investigate in the context of brane inflation the possibility of additional light scalar fields generating significant power spectrum and non-Gaussianities at the end of inflation affecting the CMB scale observations. We consider the specific mechanism outlined by Lyth and describe the necessary criteria for it to be potentially important in a warped throat. We also discuss different mechanisms for uplifting the vacuum energy which can lead to different dominant contributions of the inflaton potential near the end of inflation. We then apply such criteria to one of the most detailed brane inflation models to date, and show that inflation can persist towards the tip of the throat, however for the specific stable inflationary trajectory, the light residual isometry direction becomes degenerate. We also estimate the effects for other inflationary trajectories with non-degenerate residual isometries.

Minimal gauge inflation

We consider a gauge inflation model in the simplest orbifold M4 x S1/Z2 with the minimal non-Abelian SU(2) hidden sector gauge symmetry. The inflaton potential is fully radiatively generated solely by gauge self-interactions. Following the virtue of gauge inflation idea, the inflaton, a part of the five dimensional gauge boson, is automatically protected by the gauge symmetry and its potential is stable against quantum corrections. We show that the model perfectly fits the recent cosmological observations, including the recent WMAP 5-year data, in a wide range of the model parameters. In the perturbative regime of gauge interactions (g_{4D} <= 1/(2pi R M_P)) with the moderately compactified radius (10 <= R M_P <= 100) the anticipated magnitude of the curvature perturbation power spectrum and the value of the corresponding spectral index are in perfect agreement with the recent observations. The model also predicts a large fraction of the gravitational waves, negligible non-Gaussianity, and high enough reheating temperature.

Inflation in minimal left-right symmetric model with spontaneous D-parity breaking

We present a simplest inflationary scenario in the minimal left-right symmetric model with spontaneous D-parity breaking, which is a well motivated particle physics model for neutrino masses. This leads us to connect the observed anisotropies in the cosmic microwave background to the sub-eV neutrino masses. The baryon asymmetry via the leptogenesis route is also discussed briefly.

Generation of perturbation after multi-field inflation

We explore a new possibility that some inflaton fields in multi-field inflation models satisfy the observed value of the spectral index so that the curvature perturbation generated by them through post-inflationary dynamics may be relevant for the current observations. We illustrate this point using a simple and reasonable multi-field chaotic inflation model motivated from string theory. Possible non-Gaussianity and the tensor-to-scalar ratio are briefly addressed.

Multiple scalar particle decay and perturbation generation

We study the evolution of the universe which contains a multiple number of non-relativistic scalar fields decaying into both radiation and pressureless matter. We present a powerful analytic formalism to calculate the matter and radiation curvature perturbations, and find that our analytic estimates agree with full numerical results within an error of less than one percent. Also we discuss the isocurvature perturbation between matter and radiation components, which may be detected by near future cosmological observations, and point out that it crucially depends on the branching ratio of the decay rate of the scalar fields and that it is hard to make any model independent predictions.

Dark energy in hybrid inflation

The situation that a scalar field provides the source of the accelerated expansion of the universe while rolling down its potential is common in both the simple models of the primordial inflation and the quintessence-based dark energy models. Motivated by this point, we address the possibility of causing the current acceleration via the primordial inflation using a simple model based on hybrid inflation. We trigger the onset of the motion of the quintessence field via the transition field, and find that the fate of the universe depends on the true vacuum energy determined by choosing the parameters. We also briefly discuss the variation of the equation of state and the possible implementation of our scenario in supersymmetric theories.

End of multi-field inflation and the perturbation spectrum

We investigate the dynamics of inflation models driven by multiple, decoupled scalar fields and calculate the Hubble parameter and the amplitude of the lightest field at the end of inflation which may be responsible for interesting, or possibly dangerous cosmological consequences after inflation. The results are very simple and similar to those of the single field inflation, mainly depend on the underlying spectrum of the masses. The mass distribution is heavily constrained by the power spectrum of density perturbations P and the spectral index n. The overall mass scale gives the amplitude of P, and n is affected by the number of fields and the spacing between masses in the distribution. The drop-out effect of the massive fields makes the perturbation spectrum typically redder than the single field inflation spectrum. We illustrate this using two different mass distributions.

On two string axions as inflaton

We study an inflationary model where two decoupled string axions drive inflation. The number of e-folds is dependent on the energy scale and the decay constant, but is almost independent of the angular component in spite of the rich geometry of the moduli space. This suppresses the nearly scale-invariant spectrum of the isocurvature perturbations, making the power spectrum of the primordial density perturbations dominated by the adiabatic component. We also briefly discuss some amendments to improve the situation.

Modular thermal inflation without slow-roll approximation

We study an inflationary scenario where thermal inflation is followed by fast-roll inflation. This is a rather generic possibility based on the effective potentials of spontaneous symmetry breaking in the context of particle physics models. We show that a large enough expansion could be achieved to solve cosmological problems. However, the power spectrum of primordial density perturbations from the quantum fluctuations in the inflaton field is not scale invariant and thus inconsistent with observations. Using the curvaton mechanism instead, we can obtain a nearly scale invariant spectrum, provided that the inflationary energy scale is sufficiently low to have long enough fast-roll inflation to dilute the perturbations produced by the inflaton fluctuations.

Breaking scale invariance from a singular inflaton potential

In this paper we break the scale invariance of the primordial power spectrum of curvature perturbations of inflation. Introducing a singular behaviour due to spontaneous symmetry breaking in the inflaton potential, we obtain fully analytic expressions of scale dependent oscillation and a modulation in power on small scale in the primordial spectrum. And we give the associated cosmic microwave background and matter power spectra which we can observe now and discuss the signature of the scale dependence. We also address the possibility of whether some inflationary model with featured potential might mimic the predictions of the scale invariant power spectrum. We present some examples which illustrate such degeneracies.

From the Spectrum to Inflation : An Inverse Formula for the General Slow-Roll Spectrum

We propose a general inverse formula for extracting inflationary parameters from the observed power spectrum of cosmological perturbations. Under the general slow-roll scheme, which helps to probe the properties of inflation in a model independent way, we invert the leading order, single field, power spectrum formula. We also give some physically interesting examples to demonstrate its wide applicability and illuminate its properties.

General Slow-Roll Spectrum for Gravitational Waves

We derive the power spectrum P_ψ(k) of the gravitational waves produced during general classes of inflation with second order corrections. Using this result, we also derive the spectrum and the spectral index in the standard slow-roll approximation with new higher order corrections.

Second Order General Slow-Roll Power Spectrum

Recent combined results from the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) and Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) provide a remarkable set of data which requires more accurate and general investigation. Here we derive formulae for the power spectrum P(k) of the density perturbations produced during inflation in the general slow-roll approximation with second order corrections. Also, using the result, we derive the power spectrum in the standard slow-roll picture with previously unknown third order corrections.
