Random data Cauchy problem for the wave equation on compact manifold

Inspired by the work of Burq and Tzvetkov (Invent. math. 173(2008), 449-475.), firstly, we construct the local strong solution to the cubic nonlinear wave equation with random data for a large set of initial data in $H^{s}(M)$ with $s\geq \frac{5}{14}$, where M is a three dimensional compact manifold with boundary, moreover, our result improves the result of Theorem 2 in (Invent. math. 173(2008), 449-475.); secondly, we construct the local strong solution to the quintic nonlinear wave equation with random data for a large set of initial data in $H^{s}(M)$ with $s\geq\frac{1}{6}$, where M is a two dimensional compact boundaryless manifold; finally, we construct the local strong solution to the quintic nonlinear wave equation with random data for a large set of initial data in $H^{s}(M)$ with $s\geq \frac{23}{90}$, where M is a two dimensional compact manifold with boundary.

Fokker-Planck equation driven by asymmetric Lévy motion

Non-Gaussian Lévy noises are present in many models for understanding underlining principles of physics, finance, biology and more. In this work, we consider the Fokker-Planck equation(FPE) due to one-dimensional asymmetric Lévy motion, which is a nonlocal partial differential equation. We present an accurate numerical quadrature for the singular integrals in the nonlocal FPE and develop a fast summation method to reduce the order of the complexity from $O(J^2)$ to $O(J\log J)$ in one time-step, where $J$ is the number of unknowns. We also provide conditions under which the numerical schemes satisfy maximum principle. Our numerical method is validated by comparing with exact solutions for special cases. We also discuss the properties of the probability density functions and the effects of various factors on the solutions, including the stability index, the skewness parameter, the drift term, the Gaussian and non-Gaussian noises and the domain size.

Likelihood for transcriptions in a genetic regulatory system under asymmetric stable Lévy noise

This work is devoted to investigating the evolution of concentration in a genetic regulation system, when the synthesis reaction rate is under additive and multiplicative asymmetric stable Lévy fluctuations. By focusing on the impact of skewness (i.e., non-symmetry) in the probability distributions of noise, we find that via examining the mean first exit time (MFET) and the first escape probability (FEP), the asymmetric fluctuations, interacting with nonlinearity in the system, lead to peculiar likelihood for transcription. This includes, in the additive noise case, realizing higher likelihood of transcription for larger positive skewness (i.e., asymmetry) index $β$, causing a stochastic bifurcation at the non-Gaussianity index value $α=1$ (i.e., it is a separating point or line for the likelihood for transcription), and achieving a turning point at the threshold value $β\approx -0.5$ (i.e., beyond which the likelihood for transcription suddenly reversed for $α$ values). The stochastic bifurcation and turning point phenomena do not occur in the symmetric noise case ($β=0$). While in the multiplicative noise case, non-Gaussianity index value $α=1$ is a separating point or line for both the mean first exit time (MFET) and the first escape probability (FEP). We also investigate the noise enhanced stability phenomenon. Additionally, we are able to specify the regions in the whole parameter space for the asymmetric noise, in which we attain desired likelihood for transcription. We have conducted a series of numerical experiments in `regulating' the likelihood of gene transcription by tuning asymmetric stable Lévy noise indexes. This work offers insights for possible ways of achieving gene regulation in experimental research.

A Stochastic Pitchfork Bifurcation in Most Probable Phase Portraits

We study stochastic bifurcation for a system under multiplicative stable Levy noise (an important class of non-Gaussian noise), by examining the qualitative changes of equilibrium states in its most probable phase portraits. We have found some peculiar bifurcation phenomena in contrast to the deterministic counterpart: (i) When the non-Gaussianity parameter in Levy noise varies, there is either one, two or none backward pitchfork type bifurcations; (ii) When a parameter in the vector field varies, there are two or three forward pitchfork bifurcations; (iii) The non-Gaussian Levy noise clearly leads to fundamentally more complex bifurcation scenarios, since in the special case of Gaussian noise, there is only one pitchfork bifurcation which is reminiscent of the deterministic situation.

Data assimilation and parameter estimation for a multiscale stochastic system with alpha-stable Levy noise

This work is about low dimensional reduction for a slow-fast data assimilation system with non-Gaussian $α-$stable Lévy noise via stochastic averaging. When the observations are only available for slow components, we show that the averaged, low dimensional filter approximates the original filter, by examining the corresponding Zakai stochastic partial differential equations. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the low dimensional slow system approximates the slow dynamics of the original system, by examining parameter estimation and most probable paths.

A Multiplicative Ergodic Theorem for Discontinuous Random Dynamical Systems and Applications

Motivated by studying stochastic systems with non-Gaussian Lévy noise, spectral properties for a type of linear cocycles are considered. These linear cocycles have countable jump discontinuities in time. A multiplicative ergodic theorem is proved for such linear cocycles. Then, the result is illustrated for two linear stochastic systems with general Lévy motions.

Effective Filtering on a Random Slow Manifold

This work is about a slow-fast data assimilation system when only slow components are observable. First, we obtain its low dimensional reduction via an invariant slow manifold. Second, we prove that the low dimensional filter on the slow manifold approximates the original filter in a suitable metric. Finally, we illustrate this approximate filter numerically in an example.

Existence and uniqueness of $W^{1,r}_{loc}$-solutions for stochastic transport equations

We investigate a stochastic transport equation driven by a multiplicative noise. For $L^q(0,T;W^{1,p}({\mathbb R}^d;{\mathbb R}^d))$ drift coefficient and $W^{1,r}({\mathbb R}^d)$ initial data, we obtain the existence and uniqueness of stochastic strong solutions (in $W^{1,r}_{loc}({\mathbb R}^d))$.In particular, when $r=\infty$, we establish a Lipschitz estimate for solutions and this question is opened by Fedrizzi and Flandoli in case of $L^q(0,T;L^p({\mathbb R}^d;{\mathbb R}^d))$ drift coefficient. Moreover, opposite to the deterministic case where $L^q(0,T;W^{1,p}({\mathbb R}^d;{\mathbb R}^d))$ drift coefficient and $W^{1,p}({\mathbb R}^d)$ initial data may induce non-existence for strong solutions (in $W^{1,p}_{loc}({\mathbb R}^d)$), we prove that a multiplicative stochastic perturbation of Brownian type is enough to render the equation well-posed. It is an interesting example of a deterministic PDE that becomes well-posed under the influence of a multiplicative Brownian type noise. We extend the existing results \cite{FF2,FGP1} partially.

Strong solution for stochastic transport equations with irregular drift: existence and non-existence

We prove some existence, uniqueness and non-existence results of stochastic strong solutions for a class of stochastic transport equations with a $q$-integrable (in time), bounded and $α$-Hölder continuous (in space) drift coefficient. More precisely, we show that for a Sobolev differentiable initial condition, there exists a unique stochastic strong solution when $α>2/q$, while for $α+1<2/q$ with spatial dimension higher than one, we can choose proper initial data and drift coefficients so that there is no stochastic strong solutions.

The Cauchy problem for two dimensional generalized Kadomtsev-Petviashvili-I equation in anisotropic Sobolev spaces

The goal of this paper is three-fold. Firstly, we prove that the Cauchy problem for generalized KP-I equation \begin{eqnarray*} u_{t}+|D_{x}|^α\partial_{x}u+\partial_{x}^{-1}\partial_{y}^{2}u+\frac{1}{2}\partial_{x}(u^{2})=0,α\geq4 \end{eqnarray*} is locally well-posed in the anisotropic Sobolev spaces$ H^{s_{1},\>s_{2}}(\R^{2})$ with $s_{1}>-\frac{α-1}{4}$ and $s_{2}\geq 0$. Secondly, we prove that the problem is globally well-posed in $H^{s_{1},\>0}(\R^{2})$ with $s_{1}>-\frac{(α-1)(3α-4)}{4(5α+3)}$ if $4\leq α\leq5$. Finally, we prove that the problem is globally well-posed in $H^{s_{1},\>0}(\R^{2})$ with $s_{1}>-\frac{α(3α-4)}{4(5α+4)}$ if $α>5$. Our result improves the result of Saut and Tzvetkov (J. Math. Pures Appl. 79(2000), 307-338.) and Li and Xiao (J. Math. Pures Appl. 90(2008), 338-352.).

Random data Cauchy problem for a generalized KdV equation in the supercritical case

We consider the Cauchy problem for a generalized KdV equation \begin{eqnarray*} u_{t}+\partial_{x}^{3}u+u^{7}u_{x}=0, \end{eqnarray*} with random data on \R. Kenig, Ponce, Vega(Comm. Pure Appl. Math.46(1993), 527-620)proved that the problem is globally well-posed in H^{s}(\R)$ with s> s_{crit}=\frac{3}{14}, which is the scaling critical regularity indices. Birnir, Kenig, Ponce, Svanstedt, Vega(J. London Math. Soc. 53 (1996), 551-559.) proved that the problem is ill-posed in the sense that the time of existence T and the continuous dependence cannot be expressed in terms of the size of the data in the H^{\frac{3}{14}}-norm. In this present paper, we prove that almost sure local in time well-posedness holds in H^{s}(\R) with s>\frac{17}{112}, whose lower bound is below \frac{3}{14}. The key ingredients are the Wiener randomization of the initial data and probabilistic Strichartz estimates together with some important embedding Theorems.

Slow manifolds for stochastic systems with non-Gaussian stable Lévy noise

This work is concerned with the dynamics of a class of slow-fast stochastic dynamical systems with non-Gaussian stable Lévy noise with a scale parameter. Slow manifolds with exponentially tracking property are constructed, eliminating the fast variables to reduce the dimension of these coupled dynamical systems. It is shown that as the scale parameter tends to zero, the slow manifolds converge to critical manifolds in distribution, which helps understand long time dynamics. The approximation of slow manifolds with error estimate in distribution are also considered.

The Cauchy problem for the Ostrovsky equation with positive dispersion

This paper is devoted to studying the Cauchy problem for the Ostrovsky equation \begin{eqnarray*} \partial_{x}\left(u_{t}-β\partial_{x}^{3}u +\frac{1}{2}\partial_{x}(u^{2})\right) -γu=0, \end{eqnarray*} with positive $β$ and $γ$. This equation describes the propagation of surface waves in a rotating oceanic flow. We first prove that the problem is locally well-posed in $H^{-\frac{3}{4}}(\R)$. Then we reestablish the bilinear estimate, by means of the Strichartz estimates instead of calculus inequalities and Cauchy-Schwartz inequalities. As a byproduct, this bilinear estimate leads to the proof of the local well-posedness of the problem in $H^{s}(\R)$ for $ s>-\frac{3}{4}$, with help of a fixed point argument.

Lévy noise-induced transitions in gene regulatory networks

Important effects of noise on a one-dimensional gene expression model involving a single gene have recently been discussed. However, few works have been devoted to the transition in two-dimensional models which include the interaction of genes. Therefore, we investigate here, a quantitative two-dimensional model (MeKS network) of gene expression dynamics describing the competence development in the B. subtilis under the influence of Lévy as well as Brownian motions, where noises can do the B. subtilis a favor in nutrient depletion. To analyze the transitions between the vegetative and the competence regions therein, two deterministic quantities, the mean first exit time (MFET) and the first escape probability (FEP) from a microscopic perspective, as well as their averaged versions from a macroscopic perspective, are applied. The relative contribution factor (RCF), the ratio of non-Gaussian and Gaussian noise strengths, is adopted to implement optimal control in these transitions. Schematic representations indicate that there exists an optimum choice that makes the transition occurring at the highest probability. Additionally, we use a geometric concept, the stochastic basin of attraction, to exhibit a pictorial comprehension about the influence of the Lévy motion on the basin stability of the competence state.

Kinetic solutions for nonlocal scalar conservation laws

This work is devoted to examine the uniqueness and existence of kinetic solutions for a class of scalar conservation laws involving a nonlocal super-critical diffusion operator. Our proof for uniqueness is based upon the analysis on a microscopic contraction functional and the existence is enabled by a parabolic approximation. As an illustration, we obtain the existence and uniqueness of kinetic solutions for the generalized fractional Burgers-Fisher type equations. Moreover, we demonstrate the kinetic solutions' Lipschitz continuity in time, and continuous dependence on nonlinearities and Lévy measures.

Numerical algorithms for mean exit time and escape probability of stochastic systems with asymmetric Lévy motion

For non-Gaussian stochastic dynamical systems, mean exit time and escape probability are important deterministic quantities, which can be obtained from integro-differential (nonlocal) equations. We develop an efficient and convergent numerical method for the mean first exit time and escape probability for stochastic systems with an asymmetric Lévy motion, and analyze the properties of the solutions of the nonlocal equations. We also investigate the effects of different system factors on the mean exit time and escape probability, including the skewness parameter, the size of the domain, the drift term and the intensity of Gaussian and non-Gaussian noises. We find that the behavior of the mean exit time and the escape probability has dramatic difference at the boundary of the domain when the index of stability crosses the critical value of one.

Derivation of Fokker-Planck equations for stochastic dynamical systems under excitation of multiplicative non-Gaussian white noise

Fokker-Planck equations describe time evolution of probability densities of stochastic dynamical systems and play an important role in quantifying propagation and evolution of uncertainty. Although Fokker-Planck equations can be written explicitly for nonlinear dynamical systems excited by Gaussian white noise, they are not available in general for nonlinear dynamical systems excited by multiplicative non-Gaussian white noise. Marcus stochastic differential equations are often appropriate models in engineering and physics for stochastic dynamical systems excited by non-Gaussian white noise. In this paper, we derive explicit forms of Fokker-Planck equations for one dimensional systems modeled by Marcus stochastic differential equations under multiplicative non-Gaussian white noise. As examples to illustrate the theoretical results, the derived formula is used to obtain Fokker-Plank equations for nonlinear dynamical systems under excitation of (i) $α$-stable white noise; (ii) combined Gaussian and Poisson white noise, respectively.
