FRACTAL: SSM with Fractional Recurrent Architecture for Computational Temporal Analysis of Long Sequences

Effective sequence modeling fundamentally requires balancing the retention of unbounded history with the high-resolution detection of abrupt short-term variations common in real-world phenomena. However, existing state space models (SSMs) relying on high-order polynomial projection operators (HiPPO) face a critical trade-off where uniform measures dilute recent information to maintain timescale invariance, while exponential measures sacrifice global context to capture local dynamics. This paper proposes a Fractional Recurrent Architecture for Computational Temporal Analysis of Long sequences (FRACTAL), a novel architecture integrating fractional measure theory into recursive memory updates to address this limitation. By deriving projection operators with analytically characterized spectral properties and a tunable singularity index, the proposed method amplifies sensitivity to recent signal perturbations while preserving the spectral structure that encodes scale-invariant memory dynamics. This theoretical innovation is instantiated within a simplified diagonalized state space framework by modulating input projection initialization to enable simultaneous capture of multi-scale temporal features. FRACTAL achieves an average score of 87.11\% on the Long Range Arena benchmark, including 61.85\% on the ListOps task, outperforming the S5 model.

Shifting-Merging: Secure, High-Capacity and Efficient Steganography via Large Language Models

In the face of escalating surveillance and censorship within the cyberspace, the sanctity of personal privacy has come under siege, necessitating the development of steganography, which offers a way to securely hide messages within innocent-looking texts. Previous methods alternate the texts to hide private massages, which is not secure. Large Language Models (LLMs) provide high-quality and explicit distribution, which is an available mathematical tool for secure steganography methods. However, existing attempts fail to achieve high capacity, time efficiency and correctness simultaneously, and their strongly coupling designs leave little room for refining them to achieve better performance. To provide a secure, high-capacity and efficient steganography method, we introduce ShiMer. Specifically, ShiMer pseudorandomly shifts the probability interval of the LLM's distribution to obtain a private distribution, and samples a token according to the private bits. ShiMer produced steganographic texts are indistinguishable in quality from the normal texts directly generated by the language model. To further enhance the capacity of ShiMer, we design a reordering algorithm to minimize the occurrence of interval splitting during decoding phase. Experimental results indicate that our method achieves the highest capacity and efficiency among existing secure steganography techniques.

Semantic Steganography: A Framework for Robust and High-Capacity Information Hiding using Large Language Models

In the era of Large Language Models (LLMs), generative linguistic steganography has become a prevalent technique for hiding information within model-generated texts. However, traditional steganography methods struggle to effectively align steganographic texts with original model-generated texts due to the lower entropy of the predicted probability distribution of LLMs. This results in a decrease in embedding capacity and poses challenges for decoding stegos in real-world communication channels. To address these challenges, we propose a semantic steganography framework based on LLMs, which construct a semantic space and map secret messages onto this space using ontology-entity trees. This framework offers robustness and reliability for transmission in complex channels, as well as resistance to text rendering and word blocking. Additionally, the stegos generated by our framework are indistinguishable from the covers and achieve a higher embedding capacity compared to state-of-the-art steganography methods, while producing higher quality stegos.

Provably Robust and Secure Steganography in Asymmetric Resource Scenario

To circumvent the unbridled and ever-encroaching surveillance and censorship in cyberspace, steganography has garnered attention for its ability to hide private information in innocent-looking carriers. Current provably secure steganography approaches require a pair of encoder and decoder to hide and extract private messages, both of which must run the same model with the same input to obtain identical distributions. These requirements pose significant challenges to the practical implementation of steganography, including limited access to powerful hardware and the intolerance of any changes to the shared input. To relax the limitation of hardware and solve the challenge of vulnerable shared input, a novel and practically significant scenario with asymmetric resource should be considered, where only the encoder is high-resource and accessible to powerful models while the decoder can only read the steganographic carriers without any other model's input. This paper proposes a novel provably robust and secure steganography framework for the asymmetric resource setting. Specifically, the encoder uses various permutations of distribution to hide secret bits, while the decoder relies on a sampling function to extract the hidden bits by guessing the permutation used. Further, the sampling function only takes the steganographic carrier as input, which makes the decoder independent of model's input and model itself. A comprehensive assessment of applying our framework to generative models substantiates its effectiveness. Our implementation demonstrates robustness when transmitting over binary symmetric channels with errors.

AdaVAE: Exploring Adaptive GPT-2s in Variational Auto-Encoders for Language Modeling

Variational Auto-Encoder (VAE) has become the de-facto learning paradigm in achieving representation learning and generation for natural language at the same time. Nevertheless, existing VAE-based language models either employ elementary RNNs, which is not powerful to handle complex works in the multi-task situation, or fine-tunes two pre-trained language models (PLMs) for any downstream task, which is a huge drain on resources. In this paper, we propose the first VAE framework empowered with adaptive GPT-2s (AdaVAE). Different from existing systems, we unify both the encoder\&decoder of the VAE model using GPT-2s with adaptive parameter-efficient components, and further introduce Latent Attention operation to better construct latent space from transformer models. Experiments from multiple dimensions validate that AdaVAE is competent to effectively organize language in three related tasks (language modeling, representation modeling and guided text generation) even with less than $15\%$ activated parameters in training. PCAE: A Framework of Plug-in Conditional Auto-Encoder for Controllable Text Generation

Controllable text generation has taken a gigantic step forward these days. Yet existing methods are either constrained in a one-off pattern or not efficient enough for receiving multiple conditions at every generation stage. We propose a model-agnostic framework Plug-in Conditional Auto-Encoder for Controllable Text Generation (PCAE) towards flexible and semi-supervised text generation. Our framework is "plug-and-play" with partial parameters to be fine-tuned in the pre-trained model (less than a half). Crucial to the success of PCAE is the proposed broadcasting label fusion network for navigating the global latent code to a specified local and confined space. Visualization of the local latent prior well confirms the primary devotion in hidden space of the proposed model. Moreover, extensive experiments across five related generation tasks (from 2 conditions up to 10 conditions) on both RNN- based and pre-trained BART [26] based auto-encoders reveal the high capability of PCAE, which enables generation that is highly manipulable, syntactically diverse and time-saving with minimum labeled samples. We will release our code at https://github.com/ImKeTT/pcae.

Pixel-Stega: Generative Image Steganography Based on Autoregressive Models

In this letter, we explored generative image steganography based on autoregressive models. We proposed Pixel-Stega, which implements pixel-level information hiding with autoregressive models and arithmetic coding algorithm. Firstly, one of the autoregressive models, PixelCNN++, is utilized to produce explicit conditional probability distribution of each pixel. Secondly, secret messages are encoded to the selection of pixels through steganographic sampling (stegosampling) based on arithmetic coding. We carried out qualitative and quantitative assessment on gray-scale and colour image datasets. Experimental results show that Pixel-Stega is able to embed secret messages adaptively according to the entropy of the pixels to achieve both high embedding capacity (up to 4.3 bpp) and nearly perfect imperceptibility (about 50% detection accuracy).

Provably Secure Generative Linguistic Steganography

Generative linguistic steganography mainly utilized language models and applied steganographic sampling (stegosampling) to generate high-security steganographic text (stegotext). However, previous methods generally lead to statistical differences between the conditional probability distributions of stegotext and natural text, which brings about security risks. In this paper, to further ensure security, we present a novel provably secure generative linguistic steganographic method ADG, which recursively embeds secret information by Adaptive Dynamic Grouping of tokens according to their probability given by an off-the-shelf language model. We not only prove the security of ADG mathematically, but also conduct extensive experiments on three public corpora to further verify its imperceptibility. The experimental results reveal that the proposed method is able to generate stegotext with nearly perfect security.

Graph-Stega: Semantic Controllable Steganographic Text Generation Guided by Knowledge Graph

Most of the existing text generative steganographic methods are based on coding the conditional probability distribution of each word during the generation process, and then selecting specific words according to the secret information, so as to achieve information hiding. Such methods have their limitations which may bring potential security risks. Firstly, with the increase of embedding rate, these models will choose words with lower conditional probability, which will reduce the quality of the generated steganographic texts; secondly, they can not control the semantic expression of the final generated steganographic text. This paper proposes a new text generative steganography method which is quietly different from the existing models. We use a Knowledge Graph (KG) to guide the generation of steganographic sentences. On the one hand, we hide the secret information by coding the path in the knowledge graph, but not the conditional probability of each generated word; on the other hand, we can control the semantic expression of the generated steganographic text to a certain extent. The experimental results show that the proposed model can guarantee both the quality of the generated text and its semantic expression, which is a supplement and improvement to the current text generation steganography.
