Ultrafast coherent interlayer phonon dynamics in atomically thin layers of MnBi2Te4

The atomically thin MnBi2Te4 crystal is a novel magnetic topological insulator, exhibiting exotic quantum physics. Here we report a systematic investigation of ultrafast carrier dynamics and coherent interlayer phonons in few-layer MnBi2Te4 as a function of layer number using time-resolved pump-probe reflectivity spectroscopy. Pronounced coherent phonon oscillations from the interlayer breathing mode are directly observed in the time domain. We find that the coherent oscillation frequency, the photocarrier and coherent phonon decay rates all depend sensitively on the sample thickness. The time-resolved measurements are complemented by ultralow-frequency Raman spectroscopy measurements, which both confirm the interlayer breathing mode and additionally enable observation of the interlayer shear mode. The layer dependence of these modes allows us to extract both the out-of-plane and in-plane interlayer force constants. Our studies not only reveal the interlayer van der Waals coupling strengths, but also shed light on the ultrafast optical properties of this novel two-dimensional material.

Text-Aware End-to-end Mispronunciation Detection and Diagnosis

Mispronunciation detection and diagnosis (MDD) technology is a key component of computer-assisted pronunciation training system (CAPT). In the field of assessing the pronunciation quality of constrained speech, the given transcriptions can play the role of a teacher. Conventional methods have fully utilized the prior texts for the model construction or improving the system performance, e.g. forced-alignment and extended recognition networks. Recently, some end-to-end based methods attempt to incorporate the prior texts into model training and preliminarily show the effectiveness. However, previous studies mostly consider applying raw attention mechanism to fuse audio representations with text representations, without taking possible text-pronunciation mismatch into account. In this paper, we present a gating strategy that assigns more importance to the relevant audio features while suppressing irrelevant text information. Moreover, given the transcriptions, we design an extra contrastive loss to reduce the gap between the learning objective of phoneme recognition and MDD. We conducted experiments using two publicly available datasets (TIMIT and L2-Arctic) and our best model improved the F1 score from $57.51\%$ to $61.75\%$ compared to the baselines. Besides, we provide a detailed analysis to shed light on the effectiveness of gating mechanism and contrastive learning on MDD.

Influences of the dissipative topological edge state on quantized transport in MnBi2Te4

The beauty of quantum Hall (QH) effect is the metrological precision of Hall resistance quantization that originates from the topological edge states. Understanding the factors that lead to quantization breakdown not only provides important insights on the nature of the topological protection of these edge states, but is beneficial for device applications involving such quantized transport. In this work, we combine conventional transport and real space conductivity mapping to investigate whether the quantization breakdown is tied to the disappearance of edge state in the hotly studied MnBi2Te4 system. Our experimental results unambiguously show that topological edge state does exist when quantization breakdown occurs. Such edge state is dissipative in nature and could lead to a quantization breakdown due to its diffusive character causing overlapping with bulk and other edge states in real devices. Our findings bring attentions to issues that are generally inaccessible in the transport study of QH, but can play important roles in practical measurements and device applications.

Gate-tunable magnetoresistance in six-septuple-layer MnBi$_2$Te$_4$

The recently discovered antiferromagnetic topological insulator MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ hosts a variety of exotic topological quantum phases such as the axion insulator and Chern insulator states. Here we report systematic gate voltage dependent magneto transport studies in six septuple-layer MnBi$_2$Te$_4$. In p-type carrier regime, we observe positive linear magnetoresistance when MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ is polarized in the ferromagnetic state by an out-of-plane magnetic field. Whereas in n-type regime, distinct negative magnetoresistance behaviors are observed. The magnetoresistance in both regimes is highly robust against temperature even up to the Néel temperature. Within the antiferromagnetic state, the behavior of magnetoresistance exhibits a transition from negative to positive as applying a gate voltage. The boundaries between different magnetoresistance behaviors in the experimental phase diagram can be explicitly characterized by the gate-voltage-independent magnetic fields that denotes the processes of the spin-flop transition. The rich transport phenomena demonstrate the intricate interplay between topology, magnetism and dimensionality in MnBi$_2$Te$_4$.

Magnetic-field-induced robust zero Hall plateau state in MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ Chern insulator

The intrinsic antiferromagnetic topological insulator MnBi2Te4 provides an ideal platform for exploring exotic topological quantum phenomena. Recently, the Chern insulator and axion insulator phases have been realized in few-layer MnBi2Te4 devices at low magnetic field regime. However, the fate of MnBi2Te4 in high magnetic field has never been explored in experiment. In this work, we report transport studies of exfoliated MnBi2Te4 flakes in pulsed magnetic fields up to 61.5 T. In the high-field limit, the Chern insulator phase with Chern number C = -1 evolves into a robust zero Hall resistance plateau state. Nonlocal transport measurements and theoretical calculations demonstrate that the charge transport in the zero Hall plateau state is conducted by two counter-propagating edge states that arise from the combined effects of Landau levels and large Zeeman effect in strong magnetic fields. Our result demonstrates the intricate interplay among intrinsic magnetic order, external magnetic field, and nontrivial band topology in MnBi2Te4.

Advancing CTC-CRF Based End-to-End Speech Recognition with Wordpieces and Conformers

Automatic speech recognition systems have been largely improved in the past few decades and current systems are mainly hybrid-based and end-to-end-based. The recently proposed CTC-CRF framework inherits the data-efficiency of the hybrid approach and the simplicity of the end-to-end approach. In this paper, we further advance CTC-CRF based ASR technique with explorations on modeling units and neural architectures. Specifically, we investigate techniques to enable the recently developed wordpiece modeling units and Conformer neural networks to be succesfully applied in CTC-CRFs. Experiments are conducted on two English datasets (Switchboard, Librispeech) and a German dataset from CommonVoice. Experimental results suggest that (i) Conformer can improve the recognition performance significantly; (ii) Wordpiece-based systems perform slightly worse compared with phone-based systems for the target language with a low degree of grapheme-phoneme correspondence (e.g. English), while the two systems can perform equally strong when such degree of correspondence is high for the target language (e.g. German).

Speech Enhancement using Separable Polling Attention and Global Layer Normalization followed with PReLU

Single channel speech enhancement is a challenging task in speech community. Recently, various neural networks based methods have been applied to speech enhancement. Among these models, PHASEN and T-GSA achieve state-of-the-art performances on the publicly opened VoiceBank+DEMAND corpus. Both of the models reach the COVL score of 3.62. PHASEN achieves the highest CSIG score of 4.21 while T-GSA gets the highest PESQ score of 3.06. However, both of these two models are very large. The contradiction between the model performance and the model size is hard to reconcile. In this paper, we introduce three kinds of techniques to shrink the PHASEN model and improve the performance. Firstly, seperable polling attention is proposed to replace the frequency transformation blocks in PHASEN. Secondly, global layer normalization followed with PReLU is used to replace batch normalization followed with ReLU. Finally, BLSTM in PHASEN is replaced with Conv2d operation and the phase stream is simplified. With all these modifications, the size of the PHASEN model is shrunk from 33M parameters to 5M parameters, while the performance on VoiceBank+DEMAND is improved to the CSIG score of 4.30, the PESQ score of 3.07 and the COVL score of 3.73.

Large Transport Gap Modulation in Graphene via Electric Field Controlled Reversible Hydrogenation

Graphene is of interest in the development of next-generation electronics due to its high electron mobility, flexibility and stability. However, graphene transistors have poor on/off current ratios because of the absence of a bandgap. One approach to introduce an energy gap is to use hydrogenation reaction, which changes graphene into insulating graphane with sp3 bonding. Here we show that an electric field can be used to control conductor-to-insulator transitions in microscale graphene via a reversible electrochemical hydrogenation in an organic liquid electrolyte containing dissociative hydrogen ions. The fully hydrogenated graphene exhibits a lower limit sheet resistance of 200 Gohm/sq, resulting in graphene field-effect transistors with on/off current ratios of 10^8 at room temperature. The devices also exhibit high endurance, with up to one million switching cycles. Similar insulating behaviours are also observed in bilayer graphene, while trilayer graphene remains highly conductive after the hydrogenation. Changes in the graphene lattice, and the transformation from sp2 to sp3 hybridization, is confirmed by in-situ Raman spectroscopy, supported by first-principles calculations.

A Full Text-Dependent End to End Mispronunciation Detection and Diagnosis with Easy Data Augmentation Techniques

Recently, end-to-end mispronunciation detection and diagnosis (MD&D) systems has become a popular alternative to greatly simplify the model-building process of conventional hybrid DNN-HMM systems by representing complicated modules with a single deep network architecture. In this paper, in order to utilize the prior text in the end-to-end structure, we present a novel text-dependent model which is difference with sed-mdd, the model achieves a fully end-to-end system by aligning the audio with the phoneme sequences of the prior text inside the model through the attention mechanism. Moreover, the prior text as input will be a problem of imbalance between positive and negative samples in the phoneme sequence. To alleviate this problem, we propose three simple data augmentation methods, which effectively improve the ability of model to capture mispronounced phonemes. We conduct experiments on L2-ARCTIC, and our best performance improved from 49.29% to 56.08% in F-measure metric compared to the CNN-RNN-CTC model.

Spin glass state in layered compound MnSb2Te4

As a sister compound and isostructural of MnBi2Te4, the high quality MnSb2Te4 single crystals are grown via solid-state reaction where prolonged annealing and narrow temperature window play critical roles on account of its thermal metastability. X-ray diffraction analysis on MnSb2Te4 single crystals reveals pronounced cation intermixing, 28.9(7)% Sb antisite defects on the Mn (3a) site and 19.3(6)% Mn antisite defects on the Sb (6c) site, compared with MnBi2Te4. Unlike antiferromagnetic (AFM) nature MnBi2Te4, MnSb2Te4 contains magnetic and antiferromagnetic competition and exhibits a spin glass (SG) state below 24 K. Its magnetic hysteresis, anisotropy, and relaxation process are investigated in detail with DC and AC magnetization measurements. Moreover, anomalous Hall effect as a p-type conductor is demonstrated through transport measurements. This work grants MnSb2Te4 a possible access to the future exploration of exotic quantum physics by removing the odd/even layer number restraint in intrinsic AFM MnBi2Te4-family materials as a result of the crossover between its magnetism and potential topology in the Sb-Te layer.

PISE: Person Image Synthesis and Editing with Decoupled GAN

Person image synthesis, e.g., pose transfer, is a challenging problem due to large variation and occlusion. Existing methods have difficulties predicting reasonable invisible regions and fail to decouple the shape and style of clothing, which limits their applications on person image editing. In this paper, we propose PISE, a novel two-stage generative model for Person Image Synthesis and Editing, which is able to generate realistic person images with desired poses, textures, or semantic layouts. For human pose transfer, we first synthesize a human parsing map aligned with the target pose to represent the shape of clothing by a parsing generator, and then generate the final image by an image generator. To decouple the shape and style of clothing, we propose joint global and local per-region encoding and normalization to predict the reasonable style of clothing for invisible regions. We also propose spatial-aware normalization to retain the spatial context relationship in the source image. The results of qualitative and quantitative experiments demonstrate the superiority of our model on human pose transfer. Besides, the results of texture transfer and region editing show that our model can be applied to person image editing.

Universal scaling of the critical temperature and the strange-metal scattering rate in unconventional superconductors

Dramatic evolution of properties with minute change in the doping level is a hallmark of the complex chemistry which governs cuprate superconductivity as manifested in the celebrated superconducting domes as well as quantum criticality taking place at precise compositions. The strange metal state, where the resistivity varies linearly with temperature, has emerged as a central feature in the normal state of cuprate superconductors. The ubiquity of this behavior signals an intimate link between the scattering mechanism and superconductivity. However, a clear quantitative picture of the correlation has been lacking. Here, we report observation of quantitative scaling laws between the superconducting transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$ and the scattering rate associated with the strange metal state in electron-doped cuprate $\rm La_{2-x}Ce_xCuO_4$ (LCCO) as a precise function of the doping level. High-resolution characterization of epitaxial composition-spread films, which encompass the entire overdoped range of LCCO has allowed us to systematically map its structural and transport properties with unprecedented accuracy and increment of $Δx = 0.0015$. We have uncovered the relations $T_{\rm c}\sim(x_{\rm c}-x)^{0.5}\sim(A_1^\square)^{0.5}$, where $x_c$ is the critical doping where superconductivity disappears on the overdoped side and $A_1^\square$ is the scattering rate of perfect $T$-linear resistivity per CuO$_2$ plane. We argue that the striking similarity of the $T_{\rm c}$ vs $A_1^\square$ relation among cuprates, iron-based and organic superconductors is an indication of a common mechanism of the strange metal behavior and unconventional superconductivity in these systems.

Human Pose Transfer by Adaptive Hierarchical Deformation

Human pose transfer, as a misaligned image generation task, is very challenging. Existing methods cannot effectively utilize the input information, which often fail to preserve the style and shape of hair and clothes. In this paper, we propose an adaptive human pose transfer network with two hierarchical deformation levels. The first level generates human semantic parsing aligned with the target pose, and the second level generates the final textured person image in the target pose with the semantic guidance. To avoid the drawback of vanilla convolution that treats all the pixels as valid information, we use gated convolution in both two levels to dynamically select the important features and adaptively deform the image layer by layer. Our model has very few parameters and is fast to converge. Experimental results demonstrate that our model achieves better performance with more consistent hair, face and clothes with fewer parameters than state-of-the-art methods. Furthermore, our method can be applied to clothing texture transfer.

PoNA: Pose-guided Non-local Attention for Human Pose Transfer

Human pose transfer, which aims at transferring the appearance of a given person to a target pose, is very challenging and important in many applications. Previous work ignores the guidance of pose features or only uses local attention mechanism, leading to implausible and blurry results. We propose a new human pose transfer method using a generative adversarial network (GAN) with simplified cascaded blocks. In each block, we propose a pose-guided non-local attention (PoNA) mechanism with a long-range dependency scheme to select more important regions of image features to transfer. We also design pre-posed image-guided pose feature update and post-posed pose-guided image feature update to better utilize the pose and image features. Our network is simple, stable, and easy to train. Quantitative and qualitative results on Market-1501 and DeepFashion datasets show the efficacy and efficiency of our model. Compared with state-of-the-art methods, our model generates sharper and more realistic images with rich details, while having fewer parameters and faster speed. Furthermore, our generated images can help to alleviate data insufficiency for person re-identification.

Adaptive 3D Face Reconstruction from a Single Image

3D face reconstruction from a single image is a challenging problem, especially under partial occlusions and extreme poses. This is because the uncertainty of the estimated 2D landmarks will affect the quality of face reconstruction. In this paper, we propose a novel joint 2D and 3D optimization method to adaptively reconstruct 3D face shapes from a single image, which combines the depths of 3D landmarks to solve the uncertain detections of invisible landmarks. The strategy of our method involves two aspects: a coarse-to-fine pose estimation using both 2D and 3D landmarks, and an adaptive 2D and 3D re-weighting based on the refined pose parameter to recover accurate 3D faces. Experimental results on multiple datasets demonstrate that our method can generate high-quality reconstruction from a single color image and is robust for self-occlusion and large poses.

Formant Tracking Using Dilated Convolutional Networks Through Dense Connection with Gating Mechanism

Formant tracking is one of the most fundamental problems in speech processing. Traditionally, formants are estimated using signal processing methods. Recent studies showed that generic convolutional architectures can outperform recurrent networks on temporal tasks such as speech synthesis and machine translation. In this paper, we explored the use of Temporal Convolutional Network (TCN) for formant tracking. In addition to the conventional implementation, we modified the architecture from three aspects. First, we turned off the "causal" mode of dilated convolution, making the dilated convolution see the future speech frames. Second, each hidden layer reused the output information from all the previous layers through dense connection. Third, we also adopted a gating mechanism to alleviate the problem of gradient disappearance by selectively forgetting unimportant information. The model was validated on the open access formant database VTR. The experiment showed that our proposed model was easy to converge and achieved an overall mean absolute percent error (MAPE) of 8.2% on speech-labeled frames, compared to three competitive baselines of 9.4% (LSTM), 9.1% (Bi-LSTM) and 8.9% (TCN).

Robust axion insulator and Chern insulator phases in a two-dimensional antiferromagnetic topological insulator

The intricate interplay between nontrivial topology and magnetism in two-dimensional (2D) materials has led to the emergence of many novel phenomena and functionalities. An outstanding example is the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect, which was realized in magnetically doped topological insulators (TIs) in the absence of magnetic field. Recently, the layered van der Waals compound MnBi2Te4 has been theoretically predicted and experimentally verified to be a TI with interlayer antiferromagnetic (AFM) order. It is a rare stoichiometric material with coexisting topology and magnetism, thus represents a perfect building block for complex topological-magnetic structures. Here we investigate the quantum transport behaviors of both bulk crystal and exfoliated MnBi2Te4 flakes in a field effect transistor geometry. In the 6 septuple layers (SLs) device tuned into the insulating regime, we observe a large longitudinal resistance and zero Hall plateau, which are characteristic of the axion insulator state. The robust axion insulator state occurs in zero magnetic field, over a wide magnetic field range, and at relatively high temperatures. Moreover, a moderate magnetic field drives a quantum phase transition from the axion insulator phase to a Chern insulator phase with zero longitudinal resistance and quantized Hall resistance h/e2 (h is the Plank constant and e is the elemental charge). These results pave the road for using even-number-SL MnBi2Te4 to realize the quantized topological magnetoelectric effect and axion electrodynamics in condensed matter systems.

All-Weather Deep Outdoor Lighting Estimation

We present a neural network that predicts HDR outdoor illumination from a single LDR image. At the heart of our work is a method to accurately learn HDR lighting from LDR panoramas under any weather condition. We achieve this by training another CNN (on a combination of synthetic and real images) to take as input an LDR panorama, and regress the parameters of the Lalonde-Matthews outdoor illumination model. This model is trained such that it a) reconstructs the appearance of the sky, and b) renders the appearance of objects lit by this illumination. We use this network to label a large-scale dataset of LDR panoramas with lighting parameters and use them to train our single image outdoor lighting estimation network. We demonstrate, via extensive experiments, that both our panorama and single image networks outperform the state of the art, and unlike prior work, are able to handle weather conditions ranging from fully sunny to overcast skies.
