Scheduling to Minimize Age of Information in Multi-State Time-Varying Networks with Power Constraints

In this paper, we study how to collect fresh data in time-varying networks with power constrained users. We measure data freshness from the perspective of the central controller by using the metric Age of Information, namely the time elapsed since the generation time-stamp of the freshest information. We wonder what is the minimum AoI performance the network can achieve and how to design scheduling algorithms to approach it. To answer these questions when scheduling decisions are restricted to bandwidth constraint, we first decouple the multi-user scheduling problem into a single user constrained Markov decision process (CMDP) through relaxation of the hard bandwidth constraint. Next we exploit the threshold structure of the optimal policy for the decoupled single user CMDP and obtain the optimum solution through linear programming (LP). Finally, an asymptotic optimal truncated policy that can satisfy the hard bandwidth constraint is built upon the optimal solution to each of the decoupled single-user sub-problem. The performance is verified through simulations. Our investigation shows that to obtain a small AoI performance, the scheduler exploits good channels to schedule users supported by limited power. Users equipped with enough transmission power are updated in a timely manner such that the bandwidth constraint can be satisfied.

Optimizing Data Freshness in Time-Varying Wireless Networks with Imperfect Channel State

We consider a scenario where a base station (BS) attempts to collect fresh information from power constrained sensors over time-varying band-limited wireless channels. We characterize the data freshness through the recently proposed metric--the Age of Information. We consider a time-varying channel model with power adaptation. Unlike previous work, packet loss may happen due to imperfect channel estimation or decoding error. We propose an asymptotic optimal scheduling algorithm minimizing AoI performance and satisfying both bandwidth and power constraint in such networks. Numerical simulations show that the proposed policy outperforms the greedy one, and we observe that sensors with poor channels are scheduled at higher AoI in order to limit the packet loss.

Age of Information Aware Cache Updating with File- and Age-Dependent Update Durations

We consider a system consisting of a library of time-varying files, a server that at all times observes the current version of all files, and a cache that at the beginning stores the current versions of all files but afterwards has to update %fresh versions of these files from the server. Unlike previous works, the update duration is not constant but depends on the file and its Age of Information (AoI), i.e., of the time elapsed since it was last updated. The goal of this work is to design an update policy that minimizes the average AoI of all files with respect to a given popularity distribution. Actually a relaxed problem, close to the original optimization problem, is solved and a practical update policy is derived. The update policy relies on the file popularity and on the functions that characterize the update durations of the files depending on their AoI. Numerical simulations show a significant improvement of this new update policy compared to the so-called square-root policy that is optimal under file-independent and constant update durations.

Deep Learning based Channel Estimation Algorithm over Time Selective Fading Channels

The research about deep learning application for physical layer has been received much attention in recent years. In this paper, we propose a Deep Learning (DL) based channel estimator under time varying Rayleigh fading channel. We build up, train and test the channel estimator using Neural Network (NN). The proposed DL-based estimator can dynamically track the channel status without any prior knowledge about the channel model and statistic characteristics. The simulation results show the proposed NN estimator has better Mean Square Error (MSE) performance compared with the traditional algorithms and some other DL-based architectures. Furthermore, the proposed DL-based estimator also shows its robustness with the different pilot densities.

Compactly Generated Shape Index Theory and its Application to a Retarded Nonautonomous Parabolic Equation

We establish the compactly generated shape (H-shape) index theory for local semiflows on complete metric spaces via more general shape index pairs, and define the H-shape cohomology index to develop the Morse equations. The main advantages are that the quotient space $N/E$ is not necessarily metrizable for the shape index pair $(N,E)$ and $N\sm E$ need not to be a neighborhood of the compact invariant set. Moreover, in this new theory, the phase space is not required to be separable. We apply H-shape index theory to an abstract retarded nonautonomous parabolic equation to obtain the existence of bounded full solutions.

Towards Higher Spectral Efficiency: Spatial Path Index Modulation Improves Millimeter-Wave Hybrid Beamforming

The combination of millimeter wave (mmWave) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems and index modulation (IM) technique has recently constituted a novel form of mmWave hybrid beamforming. Lots of studies have been conducted to show that such system has the potential to outperform conventional mmWave-MIMOs with respect to spectral efficiency (SE). Most of the current works only focused on designing hybrid beamforming structures to empirically achieve higher SE performance. However, a fundamental question that whether IM technique can truly improve the SE of current mmWave hybrid beamforming is still left unanswered. Against such background, in this work we firstly extend the IM-assisted mmWave system to a more generalized version, i.e. a spatial path index modulation aided mmWave (SPIM-mmWave) system, which subsumes both IM-assisted and conventional mmWave-MIMO systems as its special cases. Based on the framework of SPIM-mmWave, a fundamental study is conducted towards a theoretic condition under which SPIM-mmWave guarantees to outperform conventional mmWave-MIMO schemes. It is demonstrated that, under a specific channel condition and noise level (which will be explicitly given by our work), SPIM-mmWave guarantees to outperform conventional mmWave-MIMO systems.

A High-Accuracy Adaptive Beam Training Algorithm for MmWave Communication

In millimeter wave communications, beam training is an effective way to achieve beam alignment. Traditional beam training method allocates training resources equally to each beam in the pre-designed beam training codebook. The performance of this method is far from satisfactory, because different beams have different beamforming gain, and thus some beams are relatively more difficult to be distinguished from the optimal beam than the others. In this paper, we pro- pose a new beam training algorithm which adaptively allocates training resources to each beam. Specifically, the proposed algorithm allocates more training symbols to the beams with relatively higher beamforming gain, while uses less resources to distinguish the beams with relatively lower beamforming gain. Through theoretical analysis and numerical simulations, we show that in practical situations the proposed adaptive algorithm asymptotically outperforms the traditional method in terms of beam training accuracy. Moreover, simulations also show that this relative performance behavior holds in non-asymptotic regime.

Joint Transceiver Optimization for Wireless Communication PHY with Convolutional Neural Network

Deep Learning has a wide application in the area of natural language processing and image processing due to its strong ability of generalization. In this paper, we propose a novel neural network structure for jointly optimizing the transmitter and receiver in communication physical layer under fading channels. We build up a convolutional autoencoder to simultaneously conduct the role of modulation, equalization and demodulation. The proposed system is able to design different mapping scheme from input bit sequences of arbitrary length to constellation symbols according to different channel environments. The simulation results show that the performance of neural network based system is superior to traditional modulation and equalization methods in terms of time complexity and bit error rate (BER) under fading channels. The proposed system can also be combined with other coding techniques to further improve the performance. Furthermore, the proposed system network is more robust to channel variation than traditional communication methods.

Theory of Compact Hausdorff Shape

In this paper, we aim to establish a new shape theory, compact Hausdorff shape (CH-shape) for general Hausdorff spaces. We use the "internal" method and direct system approach on the homotopy category of compact Hausdorff spaces. Such a construction can preserve most good properties of H-shape given by Rubin and Sanders. Most importantly, we can moreover develop the entire homology theory for CH-shape, including the exactness, dual to the consequence of Mardešić and Segal.

Spatial Modulation Aided Layered Division Multiplexing: A Spectral Efficiency Perspective

In this paper, spatial modulation (SM) is introduced to layered division multiplexing (LDM) systems for enlarging the spectral efficiency over broadcasting transmission. Firstly, the SM aided LDM (SM-LDM) system is proposed, in which different layered services utilize SM for terrestrial broadcasting transmission with different power levels. Then a spectral efficiency (SE) analysis framework for SM-LDM systems is proposed, which is suitable for the SM-LDM systems with linear combining. Moreover, the closed-form SE lower bound of SM-LDM systems with maximum ratio combining (MRC) is derived, which is based on this framework. Since the theoretical SE analysis of single transmit antenna (TA) LDM systems with MRC and spatial multiplexing (SMX) aided LDM systems with MRC lacks a closed-form expression, the closed-form SE is also derived for these systems. Monte Carlo simulations are provided to verify the tightness of our proposed SE lower bound. Furthermore, it can be shown via simulations that our proposed SM-LDM systems always have a better SE performance than single-TA LDM systems, which can even outperform the SE of SMX aided LDM (SMX-LDM) systems.

Spatial Modulation for More Spatial Multiplexing: RF-Chain-Limited Generalized Spatial Modulation Aided MmWave MIMO with Hybrid Precoding

The application of hybrid precoding in millimeter wave (mmWave) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems has been proved effective for reducing the number of radio frequency (RF) chains. However, the maximum number of independent data streams is conventionally restricted by the number of RF chains, which leads to limiting the spatial multiplexing gain. To further improve the achievable spectral efficiency (SE), in this paper we propose a novel generalized spatial modulation (GenSM) aided mmWave MIMO system to convey an extra data stream via the index of the active antennas group, while no extra RF chain is required. Moreover, we also propose a hybrid analog and digital precoding scheme for SE maximization. More specifically, a closed-form lower bound is firstly derived to quantify the achievable SE of the proposed system. By utilizing this lower bound as the cost function, a two-step algorithm is proposed to optimize the hybrid precoder. The proposed algorithm not only utilizes the concavity of the cost function over the digital power allocation vector, but also invokes the convex $\ell_\infty$ relaxation to handle the non-convex constraint imposed by analog precoding. Finally, the proposed scheme is shown via simulations to outperform state-of-the-art mmWave MIMO schemes in terms of achievable SE.

On the Achievable Spectral Efficiency of Spatial Modulation Aided Downlink Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access

In this paper, a novel spatial modulation aided non-orthogonal multiple access (SM-NOMA) system is proposed. We use mutual information (MI) to characterize the achievable spectral efficiency (SE) of the proposed SM-NOMA system. Due to the finite-alphabet space-domain inputs employed by SM, the expression of the corresponding MI lacks a closed-form formulation. Hence, a lower bound is proposed to quantify the MI of the SM-NOMA system. Furthermore, its asymptotic property is also theoretically investigated in both low and high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regions. The SE performance and its analysis of our proposed SM-NOMA system are confirmed by simulation results.

Spectral-Efficient Analog Precoding for Generalized Spatial Modulation Aided MmWave MIMO

Generalized spatial modulation (GenSM) aided millimeter wave (mmWave) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) has recently received substantial academic attention. However, due to the insufficient exploitation of the transmitter's knowledge of the channel state information (CSI), the achievable rates of state-of-the-art GenSM-aided mmWave MIMO systems are far from being optimal. Against this background, a novel analog precoding scheme is proposed in this paper to improve the spectral efficiency (SE) of conventional GenSM-aided mmWave MIMOs. More specifically, we firstly manage to lower-bound the achievable SE of GenSM-aided mmWave MIMO with a closed-form expression. Secondly, by exploiting this lower bound as a cost function, a low-complexity iterative algorithm is proposed to design the analog precoder for SE maximization. Finally, numerical simulations are conducted to substantiate the superior performance of the proposed design with respect to state-of-the-art GenSM-aided mmWave MIMO schemes.

Generalized Spatial Modulation Aided MmWave MIMO with Sub-Connected Hybrid Precoding Scheme

Due to the high cost and low energy efficiency of the dedicated radio frequency (RF) chains, the number of RF chains in a millimeter wave (mmWave) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system is usually limited from a practical point of view. In this case, the maximum number of independent data streams is also restricted by the number of RF chains, which consequently leads to limiting the potentially attainable spatial multiplexing gain. In order to address this issue, in this paper, a novel generalized spatial modulation (GenSM) aided mmWave MIMO system is proposed, which enables the transmission of an extra data stream via the index of the active antennas group and requires no extra RF chain. Moreover, a two-step algorithm is also proposed to optimize the hybrid precoder design with respect to spectral efficiency (SE) maximization. Finally, numerical simulation results demonstrate the superior SE performance achieved by the proposed scheme.

Spectral Efficiency Analysis for Spatial Modulation in Massive MIMO Uplink over Dispersive Channels

Flat-fading channel models are usually invoked for analyzing the performance of massive spatial modulation multiple-input multiple-output (SM-MIMO) systems. However, in the context of broadband SM transmission, the severe inter-symbol-interference (ISI) caused by the frequency-selective fading channels can not be ignored, which leads to very detrimental effects on the achievable system performance, especially for single-carrier SM (SC-SM) transmission schemes. To the best of the author's knowledge, none of the previous researchers have been able to provide a thorough analysis on the achievable spectral efficiency (SE) of the massive SC-SM MIMO uplink transmission. In this context, the uplink SE of single-cell massive SC-SM MIMO system is analyzed, and a tight closed-form lower bound is proposed to quantify the SE when the base station (BS) uses maximum ratio (MR) combining for multi-user detection. The impacts of imperfect channel estimation and transmit correlation are all considered. Monte Carlo simulations are performed to verify the tightness of our proposed SE lower bound. Both the theoretical analysis and simulation results show that the SE of uplink single-cell massive SC-SM MIMO system has the potential to outperform the uplink SE achieved by single-antenna UEs.

On the Multi-User, Multi-Cell Massive Spatial Modulation Uplink: How Many Antennas for Each User?

Massive spatial modulation aided multiple-input multiple-output (SM-MIMO) systems have recently been proposed as a novel combination of spatial modulation (SM) and of conventional massive MIMO, where the base station (BS) is equipped with a large number of antennas and simultaneously serves multiple user equipment (UE) that employ SM for their uplink transmission. Since the massive SM-MIMO concept combines the benefits of both the SM and massive MIMO techniques, it has recently attracted substantial research interest. In this paper, we study the achievable uplink spectral efficiency (SE) of a multi-cell massive SM-MIMO system, and derive closed-form expressions to asymptotically lower-bound the SE yielded by two linear BS combining schemes, including maximum ratio (MR) combining and zero forcing (ZF) combining, when a sufficiently large number of BS antennas are equipped. The derivation takes into account the impact of transmitter spatial correlations, of imperfect channel estimations, of user-specific power controls and of different pilot reuse factors. The proposed asymptotic bounds are shown to be tight, even when the scale of BS antennas is limited. The new SE results facilitate a system-level investigation of the optimal number of uplink transmit antennas (TAs) $N$ with respect to SE maximization. Explicitly, we provide theoretical insights on the SE of massive SM-MIMO systems. Furthermore, we demonstrate that massive SM-MIMO systems are capable of outperforming the SE of conventional massive MIMOs relying on single-TA UEs.

Attractors of Local Semiflows on Topological Spaces

In this paper we introduce a notion of an attractor for local semiflows on topological spaces, which in some cases seems to be more suitable than the existing ones in the literature. Based on this notion we develop a basic attractor theory on topological spaces under appropriate separation axioms. First, we discuss fundamental properties of attractors such as maximality and stability and establish some existence results. Then, we give a converse Lyapunov theorem. Finally, the Morse decomposition of attractors is also addressed.
