Two indices Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model

We study the original Sachdev-Ye (SY) model in its Majorana fermion representation which can be called the two indices Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model. Its advantage over the original SY model in the $ SU(M) $ complex fermion representation is that it need no local constraints, so a $1/M $ expansion can be more easily performed. Its advantage over the 4 indices SYK model is that it has only two site indices $ J_{ij} $ instead of four indices $ J_{ijkl} $, so it may fit the bulk string theory better. By performing a $1/M $ expansion at $ N=\infty $, we show that a quantum spin liquid (QSL) state remains stable at a finite $ M $. The $ 1/M $ corrections are exactly marginal, so the system remains conformably invariant at any finite $ M $. The 4-point out of time correlation ( OTOC ) shows quantum chaos neither at $ N=\infty $ at any finite $ M $, nor at $ M=\infty $ at any finite $ N $. By looking at the replica off-diagonal channel, we find there is a quantum spin glass (QSG) instability at an exponentially suppressed temperature in $ M $. We work out a criterion for the two large numbers $ N $ and $ M $ to satisfy so that the QSG instability may be avoided. We speculate that at any finite $ N $, the quantum chaos appears at the order of $ 1/M^{0} $, which is the subleading order in the $ 1/M $ expansion. When the $ 1/N $ quantum fluctuations at any finite $ M $ are considered, from a general reparametrization symmetry breaking point of view, we argue that the eThis work may motivate future works to study the possible new gravity dual of the 2 indices SYK model.ffective action should still be described by the Schwarzian one, the OTOC shows maximal quantum chaos.

Frustrated superfluids in a non-Abelian flux

We study possible superfluid states of the Rashba spin-orbit coupled (SOC) spinor bosons with the spin anisotropic interaction $ λ$ hopping in a square lattice. The frustrations from the non-abelian flux due to the SOC leads to novel spin-bond correlated superfluids. By using a recently developed systematic "order from quantum disorder" analysis, we not only determine the true quantum ground state, but also evaluate the mass gap in the spin sector at $ λ< 1 $, especially compute the the excitation spectrum of the Goldstone mode in the spin sector at $ λ=1 $ which would be quadratic without the analysis. The analysis also leads to different critical exponents on the two sides of the 2nd order transition driven by a roton touchdown at $ λ=1 $. The intimate analogy at $ λ=1 $ with the charge neutral Goldstone mode in the pseudo-spin sector in the Bilayer quantum Hall systems at the total filling factor $ ν_T=1 $ are stressed. The experimental implications and detections of these novel phenomena in cold atoms loaded on a optical lattice are presented.

Symmetry protected bosonic topological phase transitions: Quantum Anomalous Hall system of weakly interacting spinor bosons in a square lattice

We study possible many body phenomena in the Quantum Anomalous Hall system of weakly interacting spinor bosons in a square lattice. There are various novel spin-bond correlated superfluids (SF) and quantum or topological phase transitions among these SF phases. One transition is a first order one driven by roton droppings ( but with non-zero gaps $ Δ_R $ ) tuned by the Zeeman field $ h $. Another is a second order bosonic Lifshitz transition with the dynamic exponents $ z_x=z_y=2 $ and an accompanying $ [C_4 \times C_4]_D $ symmetry breaking. It is driven by the softening of the superfluid Goldstone mode tuned by the ratio of spin-orbit coupled (SOC) strength over the hopping strength. The two phase boundaries meet at a topological tri-critical (TT) point which separates the $ h=0 $ line into two SF phases with $ N=2 $ and $ N=4 $ condensation momenta respectively. At the $ h=0 $ line where the system has an anti-unitary $ Z_2 $ Reflection symmetry, there are infinite number of classically degenerate family of states on both sides. We perform a systematic order from quantum disorder analysis to find the quantum ground states, also calculate the roton gaps $ Δ_R $ generated by the order from disorder mechanism on both sides of the TT point. The $ N=2 $ and $ N=4 $ SF phases have the same spin-orbital XY-AFM spin structure, respect the anti-unitary symmetry and break the $ [C_4 \times C_4]_D $ symmetry, so they be distinguished only by the different topology of the BEC condensation momenta instead of by any differences in the symmetry breaking patterns. All these novel quantum or topological phenomena can be probed in the recent experimentally realized weakly interacting Quantum Anomalous Hall (QAH) model of $ ^87 Rb $ by Wu, {\sl et.al}, Science 354, 83-88 (2016).

Quantum incommensurate Skyrmion crystals and Commensurate to In-commensurate transitions in cold atoms and materials with spin orbit couplings in a Zeeman field

In this work, we study strongly interacting spinor atoms in a lattice subject to a 2 dimensional (2d) anisotropic Rashba type of spin orbital coupling (SOC) and an Zeeman field. We find the interplay between the Zeeman field and the SOC provides a new platform to host rich and novel classes of quantum commensurate and in-commensurate phases, excitations and phase transitions. These commensurate phases include two collinear states at low and high Zeeman field, two co-planar canted states at Mirror reflected SOC parameters respectively. Most importantly, there are non-coplanar incommensurate Skyrmion (IC-SkX) crystal phases surrounded by the 4 commensurate phases. New excitation spectra above all the 5 phases, especially on the IC-SKX phase are computed. Three different classes of quantum commensurate to in-commensurate transitions from the IC-SKX to its 4 neighboring commensurate phases are identified. Finite temperature behaviors and transitions are discussed. The critical temperatures of all the phases can be raised above that reachable by current cold atom cooling techniques simply by tuning the number of atoms $ N $ per site. In view of recent impressive experimental advances in generating 2d SOC for cold atoms in optical lattices, these new many-body phenomena can be explored in the current and near future cold atom experiments. Applications to various materials such as MnSi, Fe$_{0.5}$Co$_{0.5}$Si, especially the complex incommensurate magnetic ordering in Li$_2$IrO$_3$ are given.

Hubbard model with Rashba or Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling and Rotated Anti-ferromagnetic Heisenberg Model

In this work, we investigate the possible dramatic effects of Rashba or Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling (SOC) on fermionic Hubbard model in a 2d square lattice. In the strong coupling limit, it leads to the Rotated Anti-ferromagnetic Heisenberg model which is a new class of quantum spin model. For a special equivalent class, we identify a new spin-orbital entangled commensurate ground ( Y-y ) state subject to strong quantum fluctuations at $T=0$. We evaluate the quantum fluctuations by the spin wave expansion up to order $ 1/S^2 $. In some SOC parameter regime, the Y-y state supports a massive relativistic in-commensurate magnon ( C-IC ) with its two gap minima positions continuously tuned by the SOC parameters. The C-IC magnons dominate all the low temperature thermodynamic quantities and also lead to the separation of the peak positions between the longitudinal and the transverse spin structure factors. In the weak coupling limit, any weak repulsive interaction also leads to a weak Y-y state. There is only a crossover from the weak to the strong coupling. High temperature expansions of the specific heats in both weak and strong coupling are presented. The dramatic roles to be played by these C-IC magnons at generic SOC parameters or under various external probes are hinted. Experimental applications to both layered noncentrosymmetric materials and cold atom are discussed.

Topological depletions and sub-leading scalings across topological phase transitions

It remains an open problem if there are universal scaling functions across a topological quantum phase transition (TPT) without an order parameter, but with extended Fermi surfaces (FS ). Here, we study a simple system of fermions hopping in a cubic lattice subject to a Weyl type spin-orbit coupling (SOC). As one tunes the SOC parameter at the half filling, the system displays Weyl fermions and also various TPT due to the collision of particle-particle or hole-hole Weyl Fermi Surface (WFS). At the zero temperature, the TPT is found to be a third order one whose critical exponent is determined. We derive the scaling functions of the specific heat, compressibility and magnetic susceptibilities. In contrast to all the previous cases in quantum or topological transitions, although the leading terms are non-universal and cutoff dependent, the sub-leading terms satisfy universal scaling relations. The sub-leading scaling leads to the topological depletions (TD) which show non-analytic and non-Fermi liquid corrections in the quantum critical regime, can be easily distinguished from the analytic leading terms and detected experimentally. One can also form a topological Wilson ratio from the TD of two conserved quantities such as the specific heat and the compressibility. As a byproduct, we also find Type II Weyl fermions appearing as the TPT due to the collision of the extended particle-hole WFS. Experimental realizations and detections in cold atom systems and materials with SOC are discussed.

High Chern number topological superfluids and new class of topological phase transitions of Rashba spin-orbit coupled fermions on a lattice

Searching for the first topological superfluid (TSF) remains a primary goal of modern science. Here we study the system of attractively interacting fermions hopping in a square lattice with any linear combinations of Rashba or Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in a normal Zeeman field. By imposing self-consistence equations at half filling, we find there are 3 phases: Band insulator ( BI ), Superfluid (SF) and Topological superfluid (TSF) with a Chern number $ C=2 $. The $ C=2 $ TSF happens in small Zeeman fields and weak interactions which is in the experimentally most easily accessible regime. The transition from the BI to the SF is a first order one due to the multi-minima structure of the ground state energy landscape. There is a new class of topological phase transition from the SF to the $ C=2 $ TSF at the low critical field $ h_{c1} $, then another one from the $ C=2 $ TSF to the BI at the upper critical field $ h_{c2} $. We derive effective actions to describe the two new classes of topological phase transitions, then use them to study the Majorana edge modes and the zero modes inside the vortex core of the $ C=2 $ TSF near both $ h_{c1} $ and $ h_{c2} $, especially explore their spatial and spin structures. We find the edge modes decay into the bulk with oscillating behaviors and determine both the decay and oscillating lengths. We compute the bulk spectra and map out the Berry Curvature distribution in momentum space near both $ h_{c1} $ and $ h_{c2} $. We also elaborate some intriguing bulk-Berry curvature-edge-vortex correspondences. Experimental implications in both 2d non-centrosymmetric materials under a periodic substrate and cold atoms in an optical lattice are given.

Parity oscillations and photon correlation functions in the $ Z_2/U(1) $ Dicke model at a finite number of atoms or qubits

In this work, by using the strong coupling expansion and exact diagonization (ED), we study the $ Z_2/U(1) $ Dicke model with independent rotating wave (RW) coupling $ g $ and counter-rotating wave (CRW) coupling $ g^{\prime} $ at a finite $ N $. This model includes the four standard quantum optics model: Rabi, Dicke, Jaynes-Cummings ( JC ) and Tavis-Cummings (TC) model as its various special limits. We show that in the super-radiant phase, the system's energy levels are grouped into doublets with even and odd parity. Any anisotropy $ β=g/g^{\prime} \neq 1 $ leads to the oscillation of parities in both the ground and excited doublets as the atom-photon coupling strength increases. The oscillations will be pushed to the infinite coupling strength in the isotropic $ Z_2 $ limit $ β=1 $. We find nearly perfect agreements between the strong coupling expansion and the ED in the super-radiant regime. We also compute the photon correlation functions, squeezing spectrum, number correlation functions which can be measured by various standard optical techniques.

Classification of magnons in Rotated Ferromagnetic Heisenberg model and their competing responses in transverse fields

Competing orders is a general concept to describe various quantum phases and transitions in various materials. One efficient way to investigate competing orders is to first classify different class of excitations in a given quantum phase, then study their competing responses under various external probes. This strategy may not only lead to deep understanding of the quantum phase itself, but also its deep connections to various other quantum phases nearby. We implement this approach by studying the Rotated Ferromagnetic Heisenberg model (RFHM) in two different transverse fields $h_x$ and $h_z$ which can be intuitively visualized as studying spin-orbit couplings (SOC) effects in 2d Ising or anisotropic XY model in a transverse field. At a special SOC class, it was known that the RFHM at a zero field owns an exact ground state called Y-x state. It supports non only the commensurate C-C$_0$ and C-C$_π $ magnons, but also the in-commensurate C-IC magnons. These magnons are non-relativistic, not contained in the exact ground state, so need to be thermally excited. Their dramatic response under the longitudinal $ h_y $ field was recently worked out by the authors. Here we find they respond very differently under the two transverse fields. Any $h_x$ ($h_z$) changes the collinear Y-x state to a canted co-planar YX-x (YZ-x) state which suffers quantum fluctuations. The C-C$_0$, C-C$_π $ and C-IC magnons sneak into the quantum ground state, become relativistic and play leading roles even at $ T=0 $. We map out the boundaries among the C-C$_0$, C-C$_π $ and C-IC magnons, especially the detailed evolution of the C-IC magnons inside the canted phases. As $h_x$ ($h_z$) increases further, the C-C$_0$ magnons always win the competition and emerge as the seeds to drive a transition from the YX-x (YZ-x) to the X-FM ( Z-FM ) which is shown to be in the 3d Ising universality class.

Photon Berry phases, Instantons, Schrodinger Cats with oscillating parities and crossover from $ U(1) $ to $ Z_2 $ limit in cavity QED systems

In this work, we study the $ U(1)/Z_2 $ Dicke model at a finite $ N $ by using the $ 1/J $ expansion and exact diagonization. This model includes the four standard quantum optics model as its various special limits. The $ 1/J $ expansions is complementary to the strong coupling expansion used by the authors in arXiv:1512.08581 to study the same model in its dual $ Z_2/U(1) $ representation. We identify 3 regimes of the system's energy levels: the normal, $ U(1) $ and quantum tunneling (QT) regime. The system's energy levels are grouped into doublets which consist of scattering states and Schrodinger Cats with even ( e ) and odd ( o ) parities in the $ U(1) $ and quantum tunneling (QT) regime respectively. In the QT regime, by the WKB method, we find the emergencies of bound states one by one as the interaction strength increases, then investigate a new class of quantum tunneling processes through the instantons between the two bound states in the compact photon phase. It is the Berry phase interference effects in the instanton tunneling event which leads to Schrodinger Cats oscillating with even and odd parities in both ground and higher energy bound states. We map out the energy level evolution from the $ U(1) $ to the QT regime and also discuss some duality relations between the energy levels in the two regimes. We also compute the photon correlation functions, squeezing spectrum, number correlation functions in both regimes which can be measured by various experimental techniques. The combinations of the results achieved here by $ 1/J $ expansion and those in arXiv:1512.08581 by strong coupling method lead to rather complete understandings of the $ U(1)/Z_2 $ Dicke model at a finite $ N $ and any anisotropy parameter $ β$.

Comments on "Controlling Discrete and Continuous Symmetries in Superradiant Phase Transitions with Circuit QED Systems "

Recently, the authors of the commented PRL presented the $ N=\infty $ solution of the $ U(1)/Z_2 $ Dicke model studied by us previously. Here we point out that (1) The authors missed an important transformation relating the two parameter regimes, so their separate discussions on the two regimes is redundant. (2) Both $ N=\infty $ classical limit and $ 1/N $ quantum fluctuations have been achieved in two of our previously published papers. It is the $ 1/N $ quantum fluctuations which lead to the non-trivial new quantum phenomena. In view of only a few $ N=2\sim 9 $ qubits inside a circuit QED microwave cavity, they can be tested in near future experiments. (3) Several possible experimental implementations of the $ U(1)/Z_2 $ Dicke model have been proposed before and recently experimentally realized.

Quantum magnetism of spinor bosons in optical lattices with synthetic non-Abelian gauge fields

We study quantum magnetism of interacting spinor bosons at integer fillings hopping in a square lattice in the presence of non-Abelian gauge fields. In the strong coupling limit, it leads to the Rotated ferromagnetic Heisenberg model (RFHM) which is a new class of quantum spin model. We introduce Wilson loops to characterize frustrations and gauge equivalent classes. For a special equivalent class, we identify a new spin-orbital entangled commensurate ground state. It supports not only commensurate magnons, but also a new gapped elementary excitation: in-commensurate magnons with two gap minima continuously tuned by the SOC strength. At low temperatures, these magnons lead to dramatic effects in many physical quantities such as density of states, specific heat, magnetization, uniform susceptibility, staggered susceptibility and various spin correlation functions. The commensurate magnons lead to a pinned central peak in the angle resolved light or atom Bragg spectroscopy. However, the in-commensurate magnons split it into two located at their two gap minima. At high temperatures, the transverse spin structure factors depend on the SOC strength explicitly. The whole set of Wilson loops can be mapped out by measuring the specific heat at the corresponding orders in the high temperature expansion. We argue that one gauge may be realized in current experiments and other gauges may also be realized in near future experiments. The results achieved along the exact solvable line sets up the stage to investigate dramatic effects when tuning away from it by various means. We sketch the crucial roles to be played by these magnons at other equivalent classes, with spin anisotropic interactions and in the presence of finite magnetic fields. Various experimental detections of these new phenomena are discussed. Rotated Anti-ferromagnetic Heisenberg model are also briefly mentioned.

Itinerant magnetism in Weyl spin-orbit coupled Fermi gas

Magnetic ordering of itinerant fermionic systems is at the forefront of condensed matter physics dating back to Stoner's instability. Spin-orbit coupling (SOC) which couples two essential ingredients of an itinerant fermionic system, namely spin and orbital motion, opens up new horizons to this long-standing problem. Here we report that the itinerant ferromagnetism is absent in 3D Fermi gas with a Weyl SOC and various itinerant spin density waves emerge instead, which is deeply rooted in the unique symmetry and spin-momentum locking effect in spin-orbit coupled systems. What is more appealing is that, the strong SOC provides a new and efficient mechanism to realize itinerant spin density waves at extremely weak repulsion---a significant benefit for present ultra-cold atom experiment. These novel phenomena can be probed by Bragg spectroscopy, time of flight imaging and {\sl In-Situ } measurements in ultra-cold atom experiment.

Pairing sizes in attractively interacting Fermi gases with Spin-orbit Couplings

Extensive research has been lavished on effects of spin-orbit couplings (SOC) in attractively interacting Fermi systems in both neutral cold atom systems and condensed matter systems. Recently, it was suggested that a SOC drives a new class of BCS to BEC crossover which is different than the conventional one without a SOC. Here, we explore what are the most relevant physical quantities to describe such a new BCS to BEC crossover and their experimental detections. We extend the concepts of the pairing length and "Cooper-pair size" in the absence of SOC to Fermi systems with SOC. We investigate the dependence of chemical potential, pairing length, "Cooper-pair size" on the SOC strength and the scattering length at $ 3d $ (the bound state energy at $ 2d $) for three attractively interacting Fermi gases with 3 dimensional (3d) Rashba, 3d Weyl and 2d Rashba SOC respectively. We show that only the pairing length can be used to characterize this new BCS to BEC crossover. Furthermore, it is the only length which can be directly measured by radio-frequency dissociation spectra type of experiments. We stress crucial differences among the pairing length, "Cooper-pair size " and the two-body bound state size. Our results provide the fundamental and global picture of the new BCS to BEC crossover and its experimental detections in various cold atom and condensed matter systems.

Goldstone and Higgs modes of photons inside a cavity

Goldstone and Higgs modes have been detected in various condensed matter, cold atom and particle physics experiments. Here, we demonstrate that the two modes can also be observed in optical systems with only a few (artificial) atoms inside a cavity. We establish this connection by studying the $ U(1)/Z_2 $ Dicke model where $ N $ qubits (atoms) coupled to a single photon mode. We determine the Goldstone and Higgs modes inside the super-radiant phase and their corresponding spectral weights by performing both $ 1/J=2/N $ expansion and exact diagonization (ED) study at a finite $ N $. We find nearly perfect agreements between the results achieved by the two approaches when $ N $ gets down even to $ N = 2 $. The quantum finite size effects at a few qubits make the two modes quite robust against an effectively small counter-rotating wave term. We present a few schemes to reduce the critical coupling strength, so the two modes can be observed in several experimental systems of (artificial) atoms inside a cavity by just conventional optical measurements.

Collective modes of spin-orbit coupled Fermi gases in the repulsive regime

We investigate the collective modes in the spin-orbit coupled Fermi gas with repulsive s-wave interaction. The interplay between spin-orbit coupling and atom-atom interactions plays the crucial role in the collective behaviors of Fermi gas. In contrast with ordinary Fermi liquid, spin-orbit coupled Fermi gas has strongly correlated spin and density excitations. Within the scheme of random phase approximation, we classify collective modes based on the symmetry group and determine their properties via the poles of corresponding correlation functions. Besides, the particle-hole continuum is obtained, where the imaginary part of these correlation functions become non-vanishing. We make comparisons with collective excitations in the ordinary Fermi liquid without spin-orbit coupling and in a helical liquid, i.e., surface states of a three dimensional topological insulator. We also propose an experimental protocol for detecting these collective modes and discuss corresponding experimental signatures in the ultracold Fermi gases experiment.

Topological Quantum Phase Transition in Synthetic Non-Abelian Gauge Potential

The method of synthetic gauge potentials opens up a new avenue for our understanding and discovering novel quantum states of matter. We investigate the topological quantum phase transition of Fermi gases trapped in a honeycomb lattice in the presence of a synthetic non- Abelian gauge potential. We develop a systematic fermionic effective field theory to describe a topological quantum phase transition tuned by the non-Abelian gauge potential and ex- plore its various important experimental consequences. Numerical calculations on lattice scales are performed to compare with the results achieved by the fermionic effective field theory. Several possible experimental detection methods of topological quantum phase tran- sition are proposed. In contrast to condensed matter experiments where only gauge invariant quantities can be measured, both gauge invariant and non-gauge invariant quantities can be measured by experimentally generating various non-Abelian gauges corresponding to the same set of Wilson loops.

Quantum phases, Supersolids and quantum phase transitions of interacting bosons in frustrated lattices

By using the dual vortex method (DVM), we develop systematically a simple and effective scheme to use the vortex degree of freedoms on dual lattices to characterize the symmetry breaking patterns of the boson insulating states in the direct lattices. Then we apply our scheme to study quantum phases and phase transitions in an extended boson Hubbard model slightly away from $ 1/3 $ ($ 2/3 $) filling on frustrated lattices such as triangular and kagome lattice. In a triangular lattice at $ 1/3 $, we find a X-CDW, a stripe CDW phase which was found perviously by a density operator formalism (DOF). Most importantly, we also find a new CDW-VB phase which has both local CDW and local VB orders, in sharp contrast to a bubble CDW phase found previously by the DOF. In the Kagome lattice at $ 1/3 $, we find a VBS phase and a 6 fold-CDW phase. Most importantly, we also identify a CDW-VB phase which has both local CDW and local VB orders which was found in previous QMC simulations. By analyzing carefully the saddle point structures of the dual gauge fields in the translational symmetry breaking sides and pushing the effective actions slightly away from the commensurate filling $ f=1/3 $($ 2/3 $), we classified all the possible types of supersolids and analyze their stability conditions. In a triangular lattice, there are X-CDW supersolid, stripe CDW supersolid, but absence of any valence bond supersolid (VB-SS). There are also a new kind of supersolid: CDW-VB supersolid. In a Kagome lattice, there are 6 fold-CDW supersolid, stripe CDW supersolid, but absence of any valence bond supersolid (VB-SS). There are also a new kind of supersolid: CDW-VB supersolid. Implications on QMC simulations with both nearest neighbor and next nearest neighbor interactions in both lattices are given.
