Floer homology in the cotangent bundle of a closed Finsler manifold and noncontractible periodic orbits

We show that the existence of noncontractible periodic orbits for compactly supported time-dependent Hamiltonian on the disk cotangent bundle of a Finsler manifold provided that the Hamiltonian is sufficiently large over the zero section. We generalize the BPS capacities and earlier constructions of Weber (2006 Duke Math. J. 133, 527-568) and other authors Biran et al (2003 Duke Math. J. 119, 65-118) to the Finsler setting. We then obtain a number of applications including: (1) generalizing the main theorem of Xue (2017 J. Symplectic Geom. 15, 905-936) to the Lie group setting, (2) preservation of minimal Finsler length of closed geodesics in any given free homotopy class by symplectomorphisms, (3) existence of periodic orbits for Hamiltonian systems separating two Lagrangian submanifolds, (4) existence of periodic orbits for Hamiltonians on noncompact domains, (5) existence of periodic orbits for Lorentzian Hamiltonian in higher dimensional case, (6) partial solution to a conjecture of Kawasaki (2016 Heavy subsets and non-contractible trajectories (arXiv:1606.01964)), (7) results on squeezing/nonsqueezing theorem on torus cotangent bundles, etc.

Lyapunov exponents for random perturbations of coupled standard maps

In this paper, we give a quantitative estimate for the sum of the first $N$ Lyapunov exponents for random perturbations of a natural class $2N$-dimensional volume-preserving systems exhibiting strong hyperbolicity on a large but noninvariant subset of phase space. Concrete models covered by our setting include systems of coupled standard maps, in both `weak' and `strong' coupling regimes.

Noncollision Singularities in a Planar Four-body Problem

In this paper, we show that there is a Cantor set of initial conditions in the planar four-body problem such that all four bodies escape to infinity in a finite time, avoiding collisions. This proves the Painlevé conjecture for the four-body case, and thus settles the last open case of the conjecture.

Arnold diffusion in nearly integrable Hamiltonian systems of arbitrary degrees of freedom

In this paper Arnold diffusion is proved to be a generic phenomenon in nearly integrable convex Hamiltonian systems with arbitrarily many degrees of freedom: $$ H(x,y)=h(y)+\eps P(x,y), \qquad x\in\mathbb{T}^n,\ y\in\mathbb{R}^n,\quad n\geq 3. $$ Under typical perturbation $\eps P$, the system admits "connecting" orbit that passes through any finitely many prescribed small balls in the same energy level $H^{-1}(E)$ provided $E>\min h$.

Rigidity of some abelian-by-cyclic solvable group actions on $\mathbb T^N$

In this paper, we study a natural class of groups that act as affine transformations of $\mathbb T^N$. We investigate whether these solvable, "abelian-by-cyclic," groups can act smoothly and nonaffinely on $\mathbb T^N$ while remaining homotopic to the affine actions. In the affine actions, elliptic and hyperbolic dynamics coexist, forcing a priori complicated dynamics in nonaffine perturbations. We first show, using the KAM method, that any small and sufficiently smooth perturbation of such an affine action can be conjugated smoothly to an affine action, provided certain Diophantine conditions on the action are met. In dimension two, under natural dynamical hypotheses, we get a complete classification of such actions; namely, any such group action by $C^r$ diffeomorphims can be conjugated to the affine action by $C^{r-ε}$ conjugacy. Next, we show that in any dimension, $C^1$ small perturbations can be conjugated to an affine action via $C^{1+ε}$ conjugacy. The method is a generalization of the Herman theory for circle diffeomorphisms to higher dimensions in the presence of a foliation structure provided by the hyperbolic dynamics.

A C1 Arnol'd-Liouville theorem

In this paper, we prove a version of Arnol'd-Liouville theorem for C 1 commuting Hamiltonians. We show that the Lipschitz regularity of the foliation by invariant Lagrangian tori is crucial to determine the Dynamics on each Lagrangian torus and that the C 1 regularity of the foliation by invariant Lagrangian tori is crucial to prove the continuity of Arnol'd-Liouville coordinates. We also explore various notions of C 0 and Lipschitz integrability.

Lyapunov exponents for random perturbations of some area-preserving maps including the standard map

We consider a large class of 2D area-preserving diffeomorphisms that are not uniformly hyperbolic but have strong hyperbolicity properties on large regions of their phase spaces. A prime example is the Standard map. Lower bounds for Lyapunov exponents of such systems are very hard to estimate, due to the potential switching of "stable" and "unstable" directions. This paper shows that with the addition of (very) small random perturbations, one obtains with relative ease Lyapunov exponents reflecting the geometry of the deterministic maps.

Non-Collision singularities in the Planar two-Center-two-Body problem

In this paper, we study a model of simplified four-body problem called planar two-center-two-body problem. In the plane, we have two fixed centers $Q_1=(-χ,0)$, $Q_2=(0,0)$ of masses 1, and two moving bodies $Q_3$ and $Q_4$ of masses $μ\ll 1$. They interact via Newtonian potential. $Q_3$ is captured by $Q_2$, and $Q_4$ travels back and forth between two centers. Based on a model of Gerver, we prove that there is a Cantor set of initial conditions which lead to solutions of the Hamiltonian system whose velocities are accelerated to infinity within finite time avoiding all early collisions. We consider this model as a simplified model for the planar four-body problem case of the Painlevé conjecture.

Existence of noncontractible periodic orbits of Hamiltonian system separating two Lagrangian tori on $T^*\T^n$ with application to non convex Hamiltonian systems

In this paper, we show the existence of non contractible periodic orbits in Hamiltonian systems defined on $T^*\T^n$ separating two Lagrangian tori under certain cone assumption. Our result answers a question of Polterovich in \cite{P} in a sharp way. As an application, we find periodic orbits of almost all the homotopy types on a dense set of energy level in Lorentzian type mechanical Hamiltonian systems defined on $T^*\T^2$. This solves a problem of Arnold in \cite{A}.

Arnold Diffusion in a Restricted Planar Four-Body Problem

This paper constructs a certain planar four-body problem which exhibits fast energy growth. The system considered is a quasi-periodic perturbation of the Restricted Planar Circular three-body Problem (RPC3BP). Gelfreich-Turaev's and de la Llave's mechanism is employed to obtain the fast energy growth. The diffusion is created by a heteroclinic cycle formed by two Lyapunov periodic orbits surrounding $L_1$ and $L_2$ Lagrangian points and their heteroclinic intersections. Our model is the first known example in celestial mechanics of the a priori chaotic case of Arnold diffusion.

Continuous averaging proof of the Nekhoroshev theorem

In this paper we develop the continuous averaging method of Treschev to work on the simultaneous Diophantine approximation and apply the result to give a new proof of the Nekhoroshev theorem. We obtain a sharp normal form theorem and an explicit estimate of the stability constants appearing in the Nekhoroshev theorem.
