A binary PSO based ensemble under-sampling model for rebalancing imbalanced training data

Ensemble technique and under-sampling technique are both effective tools used for imbalanced dataset classification problems. In this paper, a novel ensemble method combining the advantages of both ensemble learning for biasing classifiers and a new under-sampling method is proposed. The under-sampling method is named Binary PSO instance selection; it gathers with ensemble classifiers to find the most suitable length and combination of the majority class samples to build a new dataset with minority class samples. The proposed method adopts multi-objective strategy, and contribution of this method is a notable improvement of the performances of imbalanced classification, and in the meantime guaranteeing a best integrity possible for the original dataset. We experimented the proposed method and compared its performance of processing imbalanced datasets with several other conventional basic ensemble methods. Experiment is also conducted on these imbalanced datasets using an improved version where ensemble classifiers are wrapped in the Binary PSO instance selection. According to experimental results, our proposed methods outperform single ensemble methods, state-of-the-art under-sampling methods, and also combinations of these methods with the traditional PSO instance selection algorithm.

Order-preserving pattern mining with forgetting mechanism

Order-preserving pattern (OPP) mining is a type of sequential pattern mining method in which a group of ranks of time series is used to represent an OPP. This approach can discover frequent trends in time series. Existing OPP mining algorithms consider data points at different time to be equally important; however, newer data usually have a more significant impact, while older data have a weaker impact. We therefore introduce the forgetting mechanism into OPP mining to reduce the importance of older data. This paper explores the mining of OPPs with forgetting mechanism (OPF) and proposes an algorithm called OPF-Miner that can discover frequent OPFs. OPF-Miner performs two tasks, candidate pattern generation and support calculation. In candidate pattern generation, OPF-Miner employs a maximal support priority strategy and a group pattern fusion strategy to avoid redundant pattern fusions. For support calculation, we propose an algorithm called support calculation with forgetting mechanism, which uses prefix and suffix pattern pruning strategies to avoid redundant support calculations. The experiments are conducted on nine datasets and 12 alternative algorithms. The results verify that OPF-Miner is superior to other competitive algorithms. More importantly, OPF-Miner yields good clustering performance for time series, since the forgetting mechanism is employed.

Mixture Data for Training Cannot Ensure Out-of-distribution Generalization

Deep neural networks often face generalization problems to handle out-of-distribution (OOD) data, and there remains a notable theoretical gap between the contributing factors and their respective impacts. Literature evidence from in-distribution data has suggested that generalization error can shrink if the size of mixture data for training increases. However, when it comes to OOD samples, this conventional understanding does not hold anymore -- Increasing the size of training data does not always lead to a reduction in the test generalization error. In fact, diverse trends of the errors have been found across various shifting scenarios including those decreasing trends under a power-law pattern, initial declines followed by increases, or continuous stable patterns. Previous work has approached OOD data qualitatively, treating them merely as samples unseen during training, which are hard to explain the complicated non-monotonic trends. In this work, we quantitatively redefine OOD data as those situated outside the convex hull of mixed training data and establish novel generalization error bounds to comprehend the counterintuitive observations better. Our proof of the new risk bound agrees that the efficacy of well-trained models can be guaranteed for unseen data within the convex hull; More interestingly, but for OOD data beyond this coverage, the generalization cannot be ensured, which aligns with our observations. Furthermore, we attempted various OOD techniques to underscore that our results not only explain insightful observations in recent OOD generalization work, such as the significance of diverse data and the sensitivity to unseen shifts of existing algorithms, but it also inspires a novel and effective data selection strategy.

One-off Negative Sequential Pattern Mining

Negative sequential pattern mining (SPM) is an important SPM research topic. Unlike positive SPM, negative SPM can discover events that should have occurred but have not occurred, and it can be used for financial risk management and fraud detection. However, existing methods generally ignore the repetitions of the pattern and do not consider gap constraints, which can lead to mining results containing a large number of patterns that users are not interested in. To solve this problem, this paper discovers frequent one-off negative sequential patterns (ONPs). This problem has the following two characteristics. First, the support is calculated under the one-off condition, which means that any character in the sequence can only be used once at most. Second, the gap constraint can be given by the user. To efficiently mine patterns, this paper proposes the ONP-Miner algorithm, which employs depth-first and backtracking strategies to calculate the support. Therefore, ONP-Miner can effectively avoid creating redundant nodes and parent-child relationships. Moreover, to effectively reduce the number of candidate patterns, ONP-Miner uses pattern join and pruning strategies to generate and further prune the candidate patterns, respectively. Experimental results show that ONP-Miner not only improves the mining efficiency, but also has better mining performance than the state-of-the-art algorithms. More importantly, ONP mining can find more interesting patterns in traffic volume data to predict future traffic.

dbMPIKT: A web resource for the kinetic and thermodynamic database of mutant protein interactions

Protein-protein interactions (PPIs) perform important roles on biological functions. Researches of mutants on protein interactions can further understand PPIs. In the past, many researchers have developed databases that stored mutants on protein interactions, which are old and not updated till now. To address the issue, we developed a kinetic and thermodynamic database of mutant protein interactions (dbMPIKT) that can be freely accessible at our website. This database contains 5291 mutants that integrated data from previous databases and data from literatures for nearly three years. Furthermore, the data were analyzed, involving mutation number, mutation type, protein pair source and network map construction. On the whole, the database provides new data to further improve the study on PPIs. Website: http://210.45.212.128/lqy/index.php
