CARA: Cognitive Adaptive Recommendation Agent

Recent advances in large language models and agent-based recommendation frameworks have introduced new opportunities for more flexible and context-aware recommendation. However, existing methods still largely rely on semantic matching, end-to-end generation, or loosely structured agent workflows, without explicitly modeling how user preferences are processed and translated into final decisions. To address this limitation, we propose CARA, a cognitively inspired recommendation framework that formulates recommendation as a structured decision-making process. The core intuition of CARA is that user decisions are jointly shaped by two complementary mechanisms: intuitive affective preference and deliberate rational evaluation. Accordingly, CARA organizes recommendation into two coordinated stages: candidate filtering, which narrows the search space based on coarse-grained preference constraints, and dual-perspective decision modeling, which captures recommendation decisions through affective and rational judgment. We further introduce a boundary-aware KTO strategy that prioritizes instructions the model can solve occasionally but not consistently, thereby increasing the density of informative preference signals. Extensive experiments on three Amazon Reviews domains show that CARA achieves the best performance on most evaluation metrics, with relative improvements of up to 10.15% over the baseline.

Differentiable Optimization Layered Safety-Critical Control for Risk-Aware Navigation via Conformal Prediction

Risk-aware navigation in unknown environments is a fundamental challenge for autonomous vehicles operating in complex urban systems. To address this issue, this paper presents a differentiable optimization layered safety-critical control method based on conformal prediction. First, to handle uncertainties arising from sensor noise, the conformal prediction method is employed to generate risk-aware obstacle ellipsoids around an elliptical-shaped robot. Second, two nested differentiable optimization layers are introduced to build the control barrier functions for obstacle avoidance and feasibility guarantee, respectively. Then, a quadratic program based safety-critical control law is proposed to integrate the above control barrier function constraints as well as input constraints. In the end, the effectiveness of the proposed framework is demonstrated through numerical simulations.

TSRE: Channel-Aware Typical Set Refinement for Out-of-Distribution Detection

Out-of-Distribution (OOD) detection is a critical capability for ensuring the safe deployment of machine learning models in open-world environments, where unexpected or anomalous inputs can compromise model reliability and performance. Activation-based methods play a fundamental role in OOD detection by mitigating anomalous activations and enhancing the separation between in-distribution (ID) and OOD data. However, existing methods apply activation rectification while often overlooking channel's intrinsic characteristics and distributional skewness, which results in inaccurate typical set estimation. This discrepancy can lead to the improper inclusion of anomalous activations across channels. To address this limitation, we propose a typical set refinement method based on discriminability and activity, which rectifies activations into a channel-aware typical set. Furthermore, we introduce a skewness-based refinement to mitigate distributional bias in typical set estimation. Finally, we leverage the rectified activations to compute the energy score for OOD detection. Experiments on the ImageNet-1K and CIFAR-100 benchmarks demonstrate that our method achieves state-of-the-art performance and generalizes effectively across backbones and score functions.

Robust Safety Critical Control Under Multiple State and Input Constraints: Volume Control Barrier Function Method

In this paper, the safety-critical control problem for uncertain systems under multiple control barrier function (CBF) constraints and input constraints is investigated. A novel framework is proposed to generate a safety filter that minimizes changes to reference inputs when safety risks arise, ensuring a balance between safety and performance. A nonlinear disturbance observer (DOB) based on the robust integral of the sign of the error (RISE) is used to estimate system uncertainties, ensuring that the estimation error converges to zero exponentially. This error bound is integrated into the safety-critical controller to reduce conservativeness while ensuring safety. To further address the challenges arising from multiple CBF and input constraints, a novel Volume CBF (VCBF) is proposed by analyzing the feasible space of the quadratic programming (QP) problem. % ensuring solution feasibility by keeping the volume as a positive value. To ensure that the feasible space does not vanish under disturbances, a DOB-VCBF-based method is introduced, ensuring system safety while maintaining the feasibility of the resulting QP. Subsequently, several groups of simulation and experimental results are provided to validate the effectiveness of the proposed controller.

Polytope Volume Monitoring Problem: Formulation and Solution via Parametric Linear Program Based Control Barrier Function

Motivated by the latest research on feasible space monitoring of multiple control barrier functions (CBFs) as well as polytopic collision avoidance, this paper studies the Polytope Volume Monitoring (PVM) problem, whose goal is to design a control law for inputs of nonlinear systems to prevent the volume of some state-dependent polytope from decreasing to zero. Recent studies have explored the idea of applying Chebyshev ball method in optimization theory to solve the case study of PVM; however, the underlying difficulties caused by nonsmoothness have not been addressed. This paper continues the study on this topic, where our main contribution is to establish the relationship between nonsmooth CBF and parametric optimization theory through directional derivatives for the first time, to solve PVM problems more conveniently. In detail, inspired by Chebyshev ball approach, a parametric linear program (PLP) based nonsmooth barrier function candidate is established for PVM, and then, sufficient conditions for it to be a nonsmooth CBF are proposed, based on which a quadratic program (QP) based safety filter with guaranteed feasibility is proposed to address PVM problems. Finally, a numerical simulation example is given to show the efficiency of the proposed safety filter.
