Bound excitons and bandgap engineering in violet phosphorus

Violet phosphorus (VP), the most stable phosphorus allotrope, is a van der Waals semiconductor that can be used to construct $\textit{p}$-type nanodevices. Recently, high-quality VP crystals have been synthesized while a deep insight into their excitonic properties and bandgap tailoring approaches, which are crucial for their optoelectronic device applications, is still lacking. Here, we study the optical properties of ultrathin VP by second harmonic generation, photoluminescence, and optical absorption spectroscopy. We observed strong bound exciton emission that is 0.48 eV away from the free exciton emission, which is among the largest in 2D materials. In addition, the bandgaps of VP are highly sensitive to the number of layers and external strain, which provides convenient approaches for bandgap engineering. The strong bound exciton emission and tunable bandgaps make VP a promising material in optoelectronic devices.

Changing the Phosphorus Allotrope from a Square Columnar Structure to a Planar Zigzag Nanoribbon by Increasing the Diameter of Carbon Nanotube Nanoreactors

Elemental phosphorus nanostructures are notorious for a large number of allotropes, which limits their usefulness as semiconductors. To limit this structural diversity, we synthesize selectively quasi-1D phosphorus nanostructures inside carbon nanotubes (CNTs) that act both as stable templates and nanoreactors. Whereas zigzag phosphorus nanoribbons form preferably in CNTs with an inner diameter exceeding 1.4 nm, a previously unknown square columnar structure of phosphorus is observed to form inside narrower nanotubes. Our findings are supported by electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy observations as well as ab initio density functional theory calculations. Our computational results suggest that square columnar structures form preferably in CNTs with inner diameter around 1.0 nm, whereas black phosphorus nanoribbons form preferably inside CNTs with 4.1 nm inner diameter, with zigzag nanoribbons energetically favored over armchair nanoribbons. Our theoretical predictions agree with the experimental findings.

Efficient Dynamic Nuclear Polarization at High Magnetic Fields

By applying a new technique for dynamic nuclear polarization involving simultaneous excitation of electronic and nuclear transitions, we have enhanced the nuclear polarization of the nitrogen nuclei in 15N@C60 by a factor of 1000 at a fixed temperature of 3 K and a magnetic field of 8.6 T, more than twice the maximum enhancement reported to date. This methodology will allow the initialization of the nuclear qubit in schemes exploiting N@C60 molecules as components of a quantum information processing device.

The effects of a pyrrolidine functional group on the magnetic properties of N@C60

A new stable pyrrolidine functionalized fullerene derivative, C69H10N2O2, has been synthesized, purified by high performance liquid chromatography, and characterized by MALDI mass spectrometry, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared, 1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance. The magnetic properties of the analogous endohedral species have been studied by both continuous wave (CW) and pulsed EPR. CW-EPR spectra indicated an anisotropic hyperfine interaction and a permanent zero-field-splitting (ZFS). Both CW and pulsed EPR showed the ZFS parameter Deff to be around 17 MHz. Pulsed EPR revealed a biexponential decay in both T1 and T2, yielding a molecular tumbling correlation time of 31.4 +/- 2.5 ps.
