Fundamentals of electroweak theory

The present text is an updated version of an earlier author's book on the electroweak theory (published originally in 2002, ISBN 80-246-0639-9). It reflects the ultimate completion of the standard model by the long-awaited discovery of the Higgs boson (ten years after the first edition) and incorporates also some minor corrections of the previous text, removing typos, etc. As regards an immediate motivation to come up with such an update of the original rather old book, the 10th anniversary of the Higgs boson discovery seems to be an opportune moment for doing it now. The publication of the current upgraded text within the e-print arXiv is aimed at its best possible availability for any interested reader.

Vector boson scattering and boundary conditions in Kaluza-Klein toy model

We study a simple higher-dimensional toy model of electroweak symmetry breaking, in particular a pure gauge 5D theory on flat background with one extra finite space dimension. The principle of least action and the requirement of gauge independence of scattering amplitudes are used to determine the possible choices of boundary conditions. We demonstrate that for any of these choices the scattering amplitudes of vector bosons do not exhibit power-like growth in the high energy limit. Our analysis is an extension and generalization of the results obtained previously by other authors.

Possible non-decoupling effects of heavy Higgs bosons in e+ e- -> W+ W- within THDM

We discuss the origin of the nondecoupling effects of the heavy Higgs bosons within the two Higgs doublet extension (THDM) of the Standard Model (SM) and illustrate it by means of the one-loop calculation of the differential cross-sections of the process e+ e- -> W+ W- in both the decoupling and the non-decoupling regimes. We argue that there are many regions in the THDM parametric space in which the THDM and SM predictions differ by several percents and such effects could, at least in principle, be testable at the future experimental facilities.

Triple gauge vertices at one-loop level in THDM

Renormalized triple gauge vertices (TGV) are examined within the two-Higgs-doublet model of electroweak interactions. Deviations of the TGV from their standard-model values are calculated at the one-loop level, in the on-shell renormalization scheme. As a consistency check, UV divergence cancellations anticipated on symmetry grounds are verified explicitly. Dependence of the TGV finite parts on the masses of possible heavy Higgs scalars is discussed briefly.

Electroweak interactions and high-energy limit

A pedagogical introduction to the equivalence theorem for longitudinal vector bosons in electroweak theories is presented and the problem of high-energy behaviour of scattering amplitudes in the Standard Model is briefly reviewed. To make the treatment self-contained, the basics of the Standard Model are summarized in an appendix.

Higgs decay into two photons, dispersion relations and trace anomaly

We examine the contribution of W boson loops to the amplitude of the process H --> γγwithin the dispersion relation approach, taking up an issue raised in this context recently. We show that the non-vanishing limit of the relevant formfactor for mW --> 0 is due to a finite subtraction induced by the value of the corresponding trace anomaly. The argument can be truned around and one thus arrives at a dispersive ("infrared") derivation of the trace anomaly.
