New measures to test modified gravity cosmologies

The observed accelerated expansion of the Universe may be explained by dark energy or the breakdown of general relativity (GR) on cosmological scales. When the latter case, a modified gravity scenario, is considered, it is often assumed that the background evolution is the same as the $Λ$CDM model but the density perturbation evolves differently. In this paper, we investigate more general classes of modified gravity, where both the background and perturbation evolutions are deviated from those in the $Λ$CDM model. We introduce two phase diagrams, $α{\rm-}fσ_8$ and $H{\rm-}fσ_8$ diagrams; $H$ is the expansion rate, $fσ_8$ is a combination of the growth rate of the Universe and the normalization of the density fluctuation which is directly constrained by redshift-space distortions, and $α$ is a parameter which characterizes the deviation of gravity from GR and can be probed by gravitational lensing. We consider several specific examples of Horndeski's theory, which is a general scalar-tensor theory, and demonstrate how deviations from the $Λ$CDM model appears in the $α{\rm-}fσ_8$ and $H{\rm-}fσ_8$ diagrams. The predicted deviations will be useful for future large-scale structure observations to exclude some of the modified gravity models.

Inflationary spectral tilts as a result of the dilatation symmetry breaking

We derive the spectral indices and their runnings of single inflation models by a new approach. We perform a dilatation transformation to the linear cosmological perturbations and derive a current (non-)conservation law. Using it, we construct a dilatation charge and a Ward-Takahashi identity for the two-point correlators, and derive two \textit{exact} expressions for the tree-level spectral indices. First, we apply the slow roll expansion to one of the exact expressions. We calculate the spectral indices and their runnings up to the second and the third order of slow roll parameters respectively, with use of the "horizon crossing formalism". By construction, our results are more rigorous and generic than the previous works. Then, we analyze another exact expression to understand how the perturbations and the slow roll parameters contribute to the spectral indices. By a numerical calculation, we confirm that only the behaviors of the slow roll parameters during a few e-folds around the horizon crossing affect significantly to the values of spectral indices. The analysis in this article indicates that if one cannot use the slow roll parameters, regardless of their values, as the expansion parameters around the horizon crossing, then one can no longer apply the slow roll expansion to the spectral indices, and it is thus necessary to apply the more generic method introduced here.

Oscillating solutions of the matter density contrast in Horndeski's theory

Evolution of the large scale structure of the Universe is described by galaxy bias and the growth rate function of the matter density contrast. The behavior of the growth rate function, in general, depends on the types of dark energy or modified gravity theories, because they modify Poisson's equation for gravity by changing the Newtonian constant in the quasi-static solutions. Whereas, another mode of the matter density contrast "oscillating mode" has not been studied well, although there is a possibility that it drastically changes the gravitational law. In this paper, we will construct the way to investigate oscillating solutions and show the concrete forms of the solutions by using the WKB approximation.

Phantom crossing dark energy in Horndeski's theory

The $Λ$CDM model is a remarkably successful model which is consistent with the observations of cosmic microwave background radiation (CMB), baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO), and large scale structure of the Universe. However, the discrepancy in the value of $H_0$ between the local observations and PLANCK observation of CMB was recently pointed out. One of the way to ease the discrepancy is to introduce phantom dark energy instead of the cosmological constant. While, phantom dark energy often suffer from the instabilities. We will investigate the general solution to overcome the difficulty of phantom dark energy and construct some particular models which have a phantom crossing and can be consistent with the observations.

General dynamical properties of cosmological models with nonminimal kinetic coupling

We consider cosmological dynamics in the theory of gravity with the scalar field possessing the nonminimal kinetic coupling to curvature given as $ηG^{μν}ϕ_{,μ}ϕ_{,ν}$, where $η$ is an arbitrary coupling parameter, and the scalar potential $V(ϕ)$ which assumed to be as general as possible. With an appropriate dimensionless parametrization we represent the field equations as an autonomous dynamical system which contains ultimately only one arbitrary function $χ(x)= 8 π\vert η\vert V(x/\sqrt{8 π})$ with $x=\sqrt{8 π}ϕ$. Then, assuming the rather general properties of $χ(x)$, we analyze stationary points and their stability, as well as all possible asymptotical regimes of the dynamical system. It has been shown that for a broad class of $χ(x)$ there exist attractors representing three accelerated regimes of the Universe evolution, including de Sitter expansion (or late-time inflation), the Little Rip scenario, and the Big Rip scenario. As the specific examples, we consider a power-law potential $V(ϕ)=M^4(ϕ/ϕ_0)^σ$, Higgs-like potential $V(ϕ)=\fracλ{4}(ϕ^2-ϕ_0^2)^2$, and exponential potential $V(ϕ)=M^4 e^{-ϕ/ϕ_0}$.

Scalar field dark energy with a minimal coupling in a spherically symmetric background

Dark energy models and modified gravity theories have been actively studied and the behaviors in the solar system have been also carefully investigated in a part of the models. However, the isotropic solutions of the field equations in the simple models of dark energy, e.g. quintessence model without matter coupling, have not been well investigated. One of the reason would be the nonlinearity of the field equations. In this paper, a method to evaluate the solution of the field equations is constructed, and it is shown that there is a model that can easily pass the solar system tests, whereas, there is also a model that is constrained from the solar system tests.

Unified description of dark energy and dark matter in mimetic matter model

The existence of dark matter and dark energy in cosmology is implied by various observations, however, they are still unclear because they have not been directly detected. In this Letter, an unified model of dark energy and dark matter that can explain the evolution history of the Universe later than inflationary era, the time evolution of the growth rate function of the matter density contrast, the flat rotation curves of the spiral galaxies, and the gravitational experiments in the solar system is proposed in mimetic matter model.

Cosmology with nonminimal kinetic coupling and a Higgs-like potential

We consider cosmological dynamics in the theory of gravity with the scalar field possessing the nonminimal kinetic coupling to curvature given as $κG^{μν}ϕ_{,μ}ϕ_{,ν}$, and the Higgs-like potential $V(ϕ)=\fracλ{4}(ϕ^2-ϕ_0^2)^2$. Using the dynamical system method, we analyze stationary points, their stability, and all possible asymptotical regimes of the model under consideration. We show that the Higgs field with the kinetic coupling provides an existence of accelerated regimes of the Universe evolution. There are three possible cosmological scenarios with acceleration: (i) {\em The late-time inflation} when the Hubble parameter tends to the constant value, $H(t)\to H_\infty=(\frac23 πGλϕ_0^4)^{1/2}$ as $t\to\infty$, while the scalar field tends to zero, $ϕ(t)\to 0$, so that the Higgs potential reaches its local maximum $V(0)=\frac14 λϕ_0^4$. (ii) {\em The Big Rip} when $H(t)\sim(t_*-t)^{-1}\to\infty$ and $ϕ(t)\sim(t_*-t)^{-2}\to\infty$ as $t\to t_*$. (iii) {\em The Little Rip} when $H(t)\sim t^{1/2}\to\infty$ and $ϕ(t)\sim t^{1/4}\to\infty$ as $t\to\infty$. Also, we derive modified slow-roll conditions for the Higgs field and demonstrate that they lead to the Little Rip scenario.

Cosmological perturbations in mimetic matter model

We investigate the cosmological evolution of mimetic matter model with arbitrary scalar potential. The cosmological reconstruction, which is the way to construct a model for arbitrary evolutions of the scale factor, is explicitly done for different choices of potential. The cases that mimetic matter model shows the evolution as Cold Dark Matter(CDM), wCDM model, dark matter and dark energy with dynamical $Om(z)$, where $Om(z) \equiv [ (H(z)/H_0)^2-1 ]/[(1+z)^3 -1],$ or phantom dark energy with phantom-non-phantom crossing are presented in detail. The cosmological perturbations for such evolution are studied in mimetic matter model. For instance, the evolution behavior of the matter density contrast which is different from usual one, i.e. $\ddot δ+ 2 H \dot δ- κ^2 ρδ/2 = 0$ is investigated. The possibility of peculiar evolution of $δ$ in the model under consideration is shown. Special attention is paid to the behavior of matter density contrast near to future singularity where decay of perturbations may occur much earlier the singularity.

Black Hole Firewalls Require Huge Energy of Measurement

The unitary moving mirror model is one of the best quantum systems for checking the reasoning of the original firewall paradox of AMPS in quantum black holes. Though the late-time part of radiations emitted from the mirror is fully entangled with the early-part, no firewall exists with a deadly, huge average energy flux in this model. This is because high-energy entanglement structure of the discretized systems in almost maximally entangled states is modified so as to yield the correct description of low-energy effective field theory. Furthermore, the strong subadditivity paradox of firewalls is resolved using non-locality of general one-particle states and zero-point fluctuation entanglement. Due to the Reeh-Schlieder theorem in quantum field theory, another firewall paradox is inevitably raised with quantum remote measurements in the model. We resolve this paradox from the viewpoint of the energy cost of measurements. No firewall appears, as long as the energy for the measurement is much smaller than the ultraviolet cutoff scale.

Cosmological perturbations in the models of dark energy and modified gravity

The quasi-static solutions of the matter density perturbation in various dark energy models and modified gravity models have been investigated in numerous papers. However, the oscillating solutions in those models have not been investigated enough so far. In this paper, the oscillating solutions, which have a possibility to unveil the difference between the models of the late-time accelerated expansion of the Universe, are also mentioned by using appropriate approximations.

Quantum Energy Teleportation without Limit of Distance

Quantum energy teleportation (QET) is, from an operational viewpoint of distant protocol users, the transportation of energy via local operations and classical communication. QET has various links to fundamental research fields, including black hole physics, the quantum theory of Maxwell's demon, and condensed-matter entanglement. There are promising signs that QET will be experimentally verified using the chiral boson fields of quantum Hall edge currents. In this Letter, we prove that, using the vacuum state of a quantum field, the upper bound of the amount of energy teleported by QET is inversely proportional to the transfer distance. This distance bound can be overcome by using squeezed states with local-vacuum regions.

The Casimir effect as a candidate of dark energy

It is known that the simply evaluated value of the zero point energy of quantum fields is extremely deviated from the observed value of dark energy density. In this paper, we consider whether the Casimir energy, which is the zero point energy brought from boundary conditions, can cause the accelerating expansion of the Universe by using proper renormalization method and introducing the fermions of finite temperature living in $3+n+1$ space-time. We show that the zero temperature Casimir energy and the finite temperature corrections can explain the current accelerated expansion of the Universe.

Cosmological perturbations in $F(R)$ gravity

The quasi-static solutions of the matter density perturbation in $F(R)$ gravity models have been investigated in numerous papers. However, the oscillating solutions in $F(R)$ gravity models have not been investigated enough so far. In this paper, the oscillating solutions are also examined by using appropriate approximations. And the behaviors of the matter density perturbation in F(R) gravity models with singular evolutions of the physical parameters are shortly investigated as applications of the approximated calculations.

Generalized Galileon Model -- cosmological reconstruction and the Vainshtein mechanism --

Explicit formulae of the equations in the generalized Galileon models are given. We also develop the formulation of the reconstruction. By using the formulation, we can explicitly construct an action which reproduces an arbitrary development of the expansion of the universe. The conditions how the reconstructed solution becomes stable and therefore it becomes an attractor solution are also given. Working in the static and spherically symmetric space-time, we investigate how the Vainshtein mechanism works in the generalized Galileon model and the correction to the Newton law becomes small. It is also shown that any spherically symmetric and static geometry can be realized by properly choosing the form of the action, which may tell that the solution could have fourth hair corresponding to the scalar field.

Cosmological perturbations in $k$-essence model

Subhorizon approximation is often used in cosmological perturbation theory. In this paper, however, it is shown that the subhorizon approximation is not always a good approximation at least in case of $k$-essence model. We also show that the sound speed given by $k$-essence model exerts a huge influence on the time evolution of the matter density perturbation, and the future observations could clarify the differences between the $Λ$CDM model and $k$-essence model.

On the necessity of the revisions for the cosmological matter perturbations from the general relativity

The differential equations, which are used for matter perturbations, are usually derived from the Newton gravity and the Euler equation in the expanded universe. In this paper, by the explicit calculations of metric perturbation theory in $Λ$CDM model, we derive the general relativistic corrections exactly for the equations and show that the differential equations derived from the Newton gravity and the Euler equation are valid in the small scale region from non-relativistic matter dominant era onwards. However the corrections are not negligible in radiation dominant era.

Dark energy from modified gravity with Lagrange multipliers

We study scalar-tensor theory, k-essence and modified gravity with Lagrange multiplier constraint which role is to reduce the number of degrees of freedom. Dark Energy cosmology of different types ($Λ$CDM, unified inflation with DE, smooth non-phantom/phantom transition epoch) is reconstructed in such models. It is shown that mathematical equivalence between scalar theory and $F(R)$ gravity is broken due to presence of constraint. The cosmological dynamics of $F(R)$ gravity is modified by the second $F_2(R)$ function dictated by the constraint. Dark Energy cosmology is defined by this function while standard $F_1(R)$ function is relevant for local tests (modification of newton regime). A general discussion on the role of Lagrange multipliers to make higher-derivative gravity canonical is developed.
