Multiresolution analysis of fluctuations in non-stationary time series through discrete wavelets

We illustrate the efficacy of a discrete wavelet based approach to characterize fluctuations in non-stationary time series. The present approach complements the multi-fractal detrended fluctuation analysis (MF-DFA) method and is quite accurate for small size data sets. As compared to polynomial fits in the MF-DFA, a single Daubechies wavelet is used here for de-trending purposes. The natural, built-in variable window size in wavelet transforms makes this procedure well suited for non-stationary data. We illustrate the working of this method through the analysis of binomial multi-fractal model. For this model, our results compare well with those calculated analytically and obtained numerically through MF-DFA. To show the efficacy of this approach for finite data sets, we also do the above comparison for Gaussian white noise time series of different size. In addition, we analyze time series of three experimental data sets of tokamak plasma and also spin density fluctuations in 2D Ising model.

On Estimation of Hurst Scaling Exponent through Discrete Wavelets

We study the scaling behavior of the fluctuations, as extracted through wavelet coefficients based on discrete wavelets. The analysis is carried out on a variety of physical data sets, as well as Gaussian white noise and binomial multi-fractal model time series and the results are compared with continuous wavelet based average wavelet coefficient method. It is found that high-pass coefficients of wavelets, belonging to the Daubechies family are quite good in estimating the true power in the fluctuations in a non-stationary time series. Hence, the fluctuation functions based on discrete wavelet coefficients find the Hurst scaling exponents accurately.

Characterizing and modeling cyclic behavior in non-stationary time series through multi-resolution analysis

A method based on wavelet transform and genetic programming is proposed for characterizing and modeling variations at multiple scales in non-stationary time series. The cyclic variations, extracted by wavelets and smoothened by cubic splines, are well captured by genetic programming in the form of dynamical equations. For the purpose of illustration, we analyze two different non-stationary financial time series, S&P CNX Nifty closing index of the National Stock Exchange (India) and Dow Jones industrial average closing values through Haar, Daubechies-4 and continuous Morlet wavelets for studying the character of fluctuations at different scales, before modeling the cyclic behavior through GP. Cyclic variations emerge at intermediate time scales and the corresponding dynamical equations reveal characteristic behavior at different scales.

Modeling Time Series of Real Systems using Genetic Programming

Analytic models of two computer generated time series (Logistic map and Rossler system) and two real time series (ion saturation current in Aditya Tokamak plasma and NASDAQ composite index) are constructed using Genetic Programming (GP) framework. In each case, the optimal map that results from fitting part of the data set also provides a very good description of rest of the data. Predictions made using the map iteratively range from being very good to fair.

Modeling Time Series Data of Real Systems

Dynamics of complex systems is studied by first considering a chaotic time series generated by Lorenz equations and adding noise to it. The trend (smooth behavior) is separated from fluctuations at different scales using wavelet analysis and a prediction method proposed by Lorenz is applied to make out of sample predictions at different regions of the time series. The prediction capability of this method is studied by considering several improvements over this method. We then apply this approach to a real financial time series. The smooth time series is modeled using techniques of non linear dynamics. Our results for predictions suggest that the modified Lorenz method gives better predictions compared to those from the original Lorenz method. Fluctuations are analyzed using probabilistic considerations.

Wavelet analysis and scaling properties of time series

We propose a wavelet based method for the characterization of the scaling behavior of non-stationary time series. It makes use of the built-in ability of the wavelets for capturing the trends in a data set, in variable window sizes. Discrete wavelets from the Daubechies family are used to illustrate the efficacy of this procedure. After studying binomial multifractal time series with the present and earlier approaches of detrending for comparison, we analyze the time series of averaged spin density in the 2D Ising model at the critical temperature, along with several experimental data sets possessing multi-fractal behavior.

Vector meson masses in hot nuclear matter : the effect of quantum corrections

The medium modification of vector meson masses is studied taking into account the quantum correction effects for the hot and dense hadronic matter. In the framework of Quantum Hadrodynamics, the quantum corrections from the baryon and scalar meson sectors were earlier computed using a nonperturbative variational approach through a realignment of the ground state with baryon-antibaryon and sigma meson condensates. The effect of such corrections was seen to lead to a softer equation of state giving rise to a lower value for the compressibility and, an increase in the in-medium baryonic masses than would be reached when such quantum effects are not taken into account. These quantum corrections arising from the scalar meson sector result in an increase in the masses of the vector mesons in the hot and dense matter, as compared to the situation when only the vacuum polarisation effects from the baryonic sector are taken into account.

Chiral symmetry breaking, color superconductivity and quark matter phase diagram: a variational approach

We discuss in this note simultaneous existence of chiral symmetry breaking and color superconductivity at finite temperature and density in a Nambu-Jona-Lasinio type model. The methodology involves an explicit construction of a variational ground state and minimisation of the thermodynamic potential. There exists solutions to the gap equations at finite densities with both quark antiquark as well as diquark condensates for the "ground" state. However, such a phase is thermodynamically unstable with the pressure being negative in this region. We also compute the equation of state, and obtain the structure of the phase diagram in the model.

Meson Correlators at Finite Temperature

We evaluate equal time point to point spatial correlation functions of mesonic currents at finite temperature. For this purpose we consider the QCD vacuum structure in terms of quark antiquark condensates and their fluctuations in terms of an irreducible four point structure of the vacuum. The temperature dependence of quark condensates is modeled using chiral perturbation theory for low temperatures and lattice QCD simulations near the critical temperature. We first consider the propagation of quarks in a condensate medium at finite temperature. We then determine the correlation functions in a hot medium. Parameters such as mass, coupling constant and threshold energy are deduced from the finite temperature correlators. We find that all of them decrease close to the critical temperature.

Quark Propagator and Meson Correlators in the QCD Vacuum

Equal time, point to point correlation functions for spatially separated meson currents are calculated with respect to a variational construct for the ground state of QCD. Given such an ansatz we make no further approximations in the evaluation of the correlators. Our calculations for the vector, axial vector and scalar channels show qualitative agreement with the phenomenological predictions, whereas the pseudoscalar channel does not. However, the pseudoscalar correlator, when approximated by saturating with intermediate one pion states agrees with results obtained from spectral density functions parameterised by pion decay constant and $<-\bar ψψ>$ value obtained from chiral perturbation theory. We discuss this departure in the pseudoscalar channel, in context of the quark propagation in the vacuum.

Hadronic Correlators and Condensate Fluctuations in QCD Vacuum

Phenomenological results of equal time, point to point spatial correlation functions of hadronic currents are used to deduce the structure of the QCD vacuum. It is found that a model with only quark condensate is not adequate to explain the observations. Inclusion of condensate fluctuations (explicit four point structure in the vacuum) leads to excellent overall agreement with the phenomenological curves and parameters in various channels.

Meson Correlators in QCD Vacuum - is Saturation the Right Approach ?

Equal time, point to point correlation functions for spatially separated meson currents are calculated with respect to a variational construct for the ground state of QCD. With exact calculations, vector, axial vector and scalar channels show qualitative agreement with the phenomenological predictions, where as pseudoscalar channel does not. However, the pseudoscalar correlator, when approximated by saturating with intermediate one pion states agrees with results obtained from spectral density functions parametrised by pion decay constant and $<\bar ψψ>$ value obtained from chiral perturbation theory.

Low Energy Leptogenesis in Left-Right Symmetric Models

We propose a new mechanism for baryogenesis. We study the effective potential of left-right extension of the standard model and show that there can be a first order phase transition at the left-right symmetry breaking and hence $(B-L)$ symmetry breaking scale, which is around TeV in our scenario. As a result, although $(B-L)$ violating interactions are in equilibrium at this scale, enough $(B-L)$ asymmetry may be generated. This $(B-L)$ asymmetry is then converted to baryon asymmetry during the anomalous electroweak process. If right handed gauge bosons are seen in the TeV scale, then we argue that this will be the only consistent mechanism to generate baryon asymmetry of the universe.
