Relevance Matters: A Multi-Task and Multi-Stage Large Language Model Approach for E-commerce Query Rewriting

For e-commerce search, user experience is measured by users' behavioral responses to returned products, like click-through rate and conversion rate, as well as the relevance between returned products and search queries. Consequently, relevance and user conversion constitute the two primary objectives in query rewriting, a strategy to bridge the lexical gap between user expressions and product descriptions. This research proposes a multi-task and multi-stage query rewriting framework grounded in large language models (LLMs). Critically, in contrast to previous works that primarily emphasized rewritten query generation, we inject the relevance task into query rewriting. Specifically, leveraging a pretrained model on user data and product information from JD.com, the approach initiates with multi-task supervised fine-tuning (SFT) comprising of the rewritten query generation task and the relevance tagging task between queries and rewrites. Subsequently, we employ Group Relative Policy Optimization (GRPO) for the model's objective alignment oriented toward enhancing the relevance and stimulating user conversions. Through offline evaluation and online A/B test, our framework illustrates substantial improvements in the effectiveness of e-commerce query rewriting, resulting in elevating the search results' relevance and boosting the number of purchases made per user (UCVR). Since August 2025, our approach has been implemented on JD.com, one of China's leading online shopping platforms.

On Discrete Age of Information of Status Updating System With General Packet Arrival Processes

Characterizing Age of Information (AoI) in status updating systems with general arrival and service processes has great significance considering that the interarrival and service time of updates can possibly be arbitrary in a real world. While expressions of average continuous AoI under G/G/1/1 queues have been derived in the paper by Soysal and Ulukus, the discrete case remained unsolved. To address it, this paper gives a fully characterization of probability generation functions (PGF) of discrete AoI under G/G/1/1 settings when preemption is allowed. In the non-preemptive case, this paper gives the expressions of PGF of discrete AoI under G/Geo/1/1 settings, which also extends the former results. The average discrete AoI is derived and discussed based on these new theoretical findings.

Analysis of Hierarchical AoII over Unreliable Channels: A Stochastic Hybrid System Approach

In this work, we generalize the Stochastic Hybrid Systems (SHSs) analysis of traditional AoI to the AoII metric. Hierarchical ageing processes are adopted using the continuous AoII for the first time, where two different hierarchy schemes, i.e., a hybrid of linear ageing processes with different slopes and a hybrid of linear and quadratic ageing processes, are considered. We first modify the main result in \cite[Theorem 1]{yates_age_2020b} to provide a systematic way to analyze the continuous hierarchical AoII over unslotted real-time systems. The closed-form expressions of average hierarchical AoII are obtained based on our Theorem \ref{theorem1} in two typical scenarios with different channel conditions, i.e., an M/M/1/1 queue over noisy channels and two M/M/1/1 queues over collision channels. Moreover, we analyze the stability conditions for two scenarios given that the quadratic ageing process may lead to the absence of stationary solutions. Finally, we compare the average age performance between the classic AoI results and our AoII results in the M/M/1/1 queue, and the effects of different channel parameters on AoII are also evaluated.

3D Printable Plasmonic Titanium Nitride Nanoparticles Enhanced Thermoplastic Polyurethane Composite for Improved Photothermal De-Icing and Infrared Labeling

Plasmonic nanomaterials offer a direct and effective approach to harnessing solar energy. Specifically, plasmonic semiconductors enable a highly efficient light-to-heat conversion process, outperforming noble metals in stability, cost-effectiveness, and accessibility. In this study, a composite 3D printing filament (T-TPU), composed of titanium nitride (TiN) and thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), was synthesized using a combined extrusion process involving a twin-screw extruder and a single-screw extruder. The resulting T-TPU filament could be used with fused deposition modeling (FDM) 3D printing to produce custom-designed patterns. Notably, these printed patterns exhibited superior photothermal performance, with potential applications in photothermal de-icing and infrared labeling. Additionally, the wavelength-dependent plasmonic and photothermal responses of the printed patterns were experimentally investigated and supported by finite elemental method (FEM) simulations, revealing a temperature increase of approximately 2.5 under IR LED light when compared to commercial black thermoplastic polyurethane (C-TPU), that was more obvious than a difference less than 1 under UV or visible LED light sources. Finally, the mechanical properties of T-TPU, altered by the inclusion of TiN nanoparticles, were assessed, showing a slight enhancement in modulus and friction coefficient relative to neat TPU (N-TPU). Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations indicated that the TiN nanoparticles promoted strong interactions between polymer chains and TiN particles, enhancing the modulus of elasticity and contributing to the improved mechanical properties of T-TPU. These findings suggest improved abrasion resistance, demonstrating the stability and durability of the composite material.

Investigation of plasmonic enhanced solar photothermal effect of Au NR@PVDF micro/nano-film

Gold nanospheres (Au NSs) and gold nanorods (Au NRs) are traditional noble metal plasmonic nanomaterials. Particularly, Au NRs with tunable longitudinal plasmon resonance from visible to the near infrared (NIR) range were suitable for high efficient photothermal applications due to extended light receiving range. In this work, we synthesized Au NRs and Au NSs of similar volume, and subsequently developed them into Au NR/PVDF and Au NS/PVDF nanofilm, both of which exhibited excellent solar photothermal performance evaluated by solar photothermal experiments. We found that Au NR/PVDF nanofilm showed higher solar photothermal performance than Au NS/PVDF nanofilm. Through detailed analysis, such as morphological characterization, optical measurement, and finite element method (FEM) modeling, we found that the plasmonic coupling effects inside the aggregated Au NRs nanoclusters contributed to the spectral blue-shifts and intensified photothermal performance. As compared to Au NS/PVDF nanofilms, Au NR/PVDF nanofilm exhibited higher efficient light-to-heat conversion rate, because of the extended light receiving range and high absorbance, as the result of strong plasmonic interactions inside nanoclusters, which was further validated by monochromatic laser photothermal experiments and FEM simulations. Our work proved that the Au NRs have huge potential for plasmonic solar photothermal applications, and are envisioned for novel plasmonic applications.

Discrete Packet Management: Analysis of Age of Information of Discrete Time Status Updating Systems

In this paper, we consider performing packet managements in discrete time status updating system, focusing on determining the stationary AoI-distribution of the system. Firstly, let the queue model be Ber/G/1/1, we obtain the AoI-distribution by introducing a two-dimensional AoI-stochastic process and solving its steady state, which describes the random evolutions of AoI and age of packet in system simultaneously. In this case, actually we analyze a more general queue called probabilistic preemption Ber/G/1/1, where the packet service is allowed to be preempted with certain probabilities. As a special case, stationary AoI-distribution for the system with Ber/Geo/1/1 queue is obtained either. For the system having size 2, two specific queues are considered, i.e., the Ber/Geo/1/2 and Ber/Geo/1/2* queues. The core idea to find the stationary AoI-distribution is that the random transitions of three-dimensional vector including AoI at the receiver, the packet age in service, and the age of waiting packet can be fully described, such that a three-dimensional AoI process is constituted. The stationary distribution of three-dimensional process then gives the stationary AoI distribution as one of its marginal distributions. For both cases, the explicit expressions of AoI-distribution are derived, thus giving the complete description of the steady state AoI for the system. For all the cases, since the steady state of a larger-dimensional AoI process is solved, so that except the AoI-distribution, we obtain more. For instance, the distributions of packet system time and waiting time for size-two updating system, and the so-called violation probabilities that AoI exceeds certain threshold.

On Discrete Age of Information of Infinite Size Status Updating System

In this paper, for the discrete time status updating system with infinite size, we derive the explicit expression of average age of information (AoI), and the AoI's stationary distribution. Based on the discussions of difference between finite and infinite size status updating systems, we successfully characterize the random dynamics of system's AoI using a two-dimensional state vector, which simultaneously tracks the real time AoI and the age of packet currently under service. We constitute the two-dimensional age process and completely solve all the stationary probabilities. Then, as one of the marginal distributions, the stationary distribution of system's AoI is derived, and with which the mean of the AoI is also determined.

On Age of Information for Discrete Time Status Updating System With Ber/G/1/1 Queues

In this paper, we consider the age of information (AoI) of a discrete time status updating system, focusing on finding the stationary AoI distribution assuming that the Ber/G/1/1 queue is used. Following the standard queueing theory, we show that by invoking a two-dimensional state vector which tracks the AoI and packet age in system simultaneously, the stationary AoI distribution can be derived by analyzing the steady state of the constituted two-dimensional stochastic process. We give the general formula of the AoI distribution and calculate the explicit expression when the service time is also geometrically distributed. The discrete and continuous AoI are compared, we depict the mean of discrete AoI and that of continuous time AoI for system with M/M/1/1 queue. Although the stationary AoI distribution of some continuous time single-server system has been determined before, in this paper, we shall prove that the standard queueing theory is still appliable to analyze the discrete AoI, which is even stronger than the proposed methods handling the continuous AoI.

Age of Information in Relay-Assisted Status Updating Systems

In this paper we consider the age of information (AoI) of a status updating system with a relay, where the updates are delivered to destination either from the direct line or the two-hop link via the relay. An updating packet generated at source is sent to receiver and the relay simultaneously. When the direct packet transmission fails, the relay replaces the source and retransmits the packet until it is eventually obtained at the receiver side. Assume that the propagation delay on each link is one time slot, we determine the stationary distribution of the AoI for three cases: (a) relay has no buffer and the packet delivery from relay cannot be preempted by fresher updates from source; (b) relay has no buffer but the packet substitution is allowable; (c) relay has size 1 buffer and the packet in buffer is refreshed when a newer packet is obtained. The idea is invoking a multiple-dimensional state vector which contains the AoI as a part and constituting the multiple-dimensional AoI stochastic process. We find the steady state of each multiple-dimensional AoI process by solving the system of stationary equations. Once the steady-state distribution of larger-dimensional AoI process is known, the stationary AoI distribution is also obtained as it is one of the marginal distributions of that process's steady-state distribution. For all the situations, we derive the explicit expression of AoI distribution, and calculate the mean and the variance of the stationary AoI. All the results are compared numerically, including the AoI performance of the non-relay state updating system. Numerical results show that adding the relay improves the system's timeliness dramatically, and no-buffer-and-preemption setting in relay achieves both minimal average AoI and AoI's variance. Thus, for the system model discussed in this paper, to reduce the AoI at receiver there is no need to add the buffer in relay.

Localizing Discriminative Visual Landmarks for Place Recognition

We address the problem of visual place recognition with perceptual changes. The fundamental problem of visual place recognition is generating robust image representations which are not only insensitive to environmental changes but also distinguishable to different places. Taking advantage of the feature extraction ability of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), we further investigate how to localize discriminative visual landmarks that positively contribute to the similarity measurement, such as buildings and vegetations. In particular, a Landmark Localization Network (LLN) is designed to indicate which regions of an image are used for discrimination. Detailed experiments are conducted on open source datasets with varied appearance and viewpoint changes. The proposed approach achieves superior performance against state-of-the-art methods.
