Advancing the understanding of energy-energy correlators in heavy-ion collisions

We investigate the collinear limit of the energy-energy correlator (EEC) in a heavy-ion context. First, we revisit the leading-logarithmic (LL) resummation of this observable in vacuum following a diagrammatic approach. We argue that this route allows to naturally incorporate medium-induced effects into the all-orders structure systematically. As an example, we show how the phase-space constraints imposed by the medium on vacuum-like emissions can be incorporated into the LL result by modifying the anomalous dimensions. On the fixed-order side, we calculate the $\mathcal{O}(α_s)$ expansion of the in-medium EEC for a $γ\to q\bar q$ splitting using, for the first time, the exact matrix element. When comparing this result to previously used approximations in the literature, we find up to $\mathcal{O}(1)$ deviations in the regime of interest for jet quenching signatures. Energy loss effects are also quantified and further suppress the EEC at large angles. These semi-analytic studies are complemented with a phenomenological study using the jet quenching Monte Carlo JetMed. Finally, we argue that the imprint of medium-induced effects in energy-energy correlators can be enhanced by using an alternative definition that takes as input Lund primary declusterings instead of particles.

Quantum to classical parton evolution in the QGP

We study the time evolution of the density matrix of a high energy quark in the presence of a dense QCD background that is modeled as a stochastic Gaussian color field. At late times, we find that only the color singlet component of the quark's reduced density matrix survives the in-medium evolution and that the density matrix becomes asymptotically diagonal in both transverse position and momentum spaces. In addition, we observe an accelerated entropy growth due to the larger phase space being explored by the quark and that the quantum and classical quark entropies converge at late times. We further observe that the quark state loses all memory of the initial condition. Combined with the fact that the reduced density matrix satisfies Boltzmann-diffusion transport, we conclude that the quark reduced density matrix can be interpreted as a classical phase space distribution.

Picturing QCD jets in anisotropic matter: from jet shapes to Energy Energy Correlators

Recent theoretical developments in the description of jet evolution in the quark gluon plasma have allowed to account for the effects of hydrodynamic gradients in the medium modified jet spectra. These constitute a crucial step towards using jets as tomographic probes of the nuclear matter they traverse. In this work, we complement these studies by providing leading order calculations of widely studied jet observables, taking into account matter anisotropies. We show that the energy distribution inside a jet is pushed towards the direction of the largest matter anisotropy, while the away region is depleted. As a consequence, the jet mass and girth gain a non-trivial azimuthal dependence, with the average value of the distribution increasing along the direction of largest gradients. However, we find that, for these jet shapes, matter anisotropic effects can be potentially suppressed by vacuum Sudakov factors. We argue that the recently proposed measurements of energy correlations within jets do not suffer from such effects, with the azimuthal dependence being visible in a large angular window, regardless of the shape of the distribution.

Energy loss effects in EECs at LO

In recent years, there has been an effort towards establishing a more complete picture for jet substructure in the presence of the quark gluon plasma. Such a program requires not only a more detailed description of medium induced effects, but also the design of novel substructure observables. Very recently, it has been noticed that Energy Energy correlators (EECs) might provide one type of such observables. Although the full extent of their sensitivity to the medium has not been completely explored, they are capable to resolve the transverse structure of the jet. In particular, they are sensitive to the critical angle separating coherent and decoherent jet evolution in the medium. In this talk, we show for the first time the effects of medium induced radiative energy loss in EECs at leading order in the number of vacuum-like emissions. The calculation takes into account all order soft gluon emissions, in the large $N_c$ limit and neglecting subdominant interfering contributions.

Quantum simulation of in-medium QCD jets: momentum broadening, gluon production, and entropy growth

Jets provide one of the primary probes of the quark-gluon plasma produced in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions and the cold nuclear matter explored in deep inelastic scattering experiments. However, despite important developments in the last years, a description of the real-time evolution of QCD jets inside a medium is still far from being complete. In our previous work, we have explored quantum technologies as a promising alternative theoretical laboratory to simulate jet evolution in QCD matter, to overcome inherent technical difficulties in present calculations. Here, we extend our previous investigation from the single particle $|q\rangle$ to the $|q\rangle+|qg\rangle$ Fock space, taking into account gluon production. Based on the light-front Hamiltonian formalism, we construct a digital quantum circuit that tracks the evolution of a multi-particle jet probe in the presence of a medium described as a stochastic color field. Studying the momentum broadening of the jet state, we observe sizable sub-eikonal effects by comparing to eikonal estimates. We also study the medium-induced modifications to the gluon emission probability, which exhibit small corrections compared to the vacuum splitting function. In addition, we study the time evolution of the von-Neumann entropy associated with the quark component; we find that the exponential of the entropy grows linearly in time for the bare quark but super-linearly when taking into account gluon emission.

Quantum to classical parton dynamics in QCD media

We study the time evolution of the density matrix of a high energy quark propagating in a dense QCD medium where it undergoes elastic collisions (radiation is ignored in the present study). The medium is modeled as a stochastic color field with a Gaussian correlation function. This allows us to eliminate the medium degrees of freedom and obtain a simple master equation for the evolution of the reduced density matrix of the high energy quark, making use of approximations that are familiar in the description of open quantum systems. This master equation is solved analytically, and we demonstrate that its solution can be reconstructed from a simple Langevin equation. At late times, one finds that only the color singlet component of the density matrix survives the quark's propagation through the medium. The off-diagonal elements of the density matrix are suppressed successively in transverse position space and in momentum space, and become independent of the details of the initial condition. This behavior is reflected in the corresponding von Neumann entropy, whose growth at late time is related to the increase of the classical phase space explored by the high energy quark in its motion through the medium. The interpretation of the Wigner transform as a classical distribution is further supported by the fact that the associated classical entropy coincides at late time with the von Neumann entropy.

Jet broadening in dense inhomogeneous matter

In this work, we study the jet momentum broadening in an inhomogeneous dense QCD medium. The transverse profile of this nuclear matter is described within a gradient expansion, and we focus on the leading gradient contributions. The leading parton is allowed to interact multiple times with the background through the soft gluon exchanges. We derive the associated final particle distribution using both the GLV opacity series and the BDMPS-Z formalism. We further discuss the modified factorization of the initial and final state effects and its consequences for phenomenological applications in the context of heavy-ion collisions and deep inelastic scattering. Finally, we present the broadening probability (describing the final state effects) in several limiting regimes, and give its numerical estimates for phenomenologically motivated sets of parameters.

Quantum partonic transport in QCD matter

We study gradient corrections to the transport equation for energetic light partons in dense QCD environments. In the diffusion limit, the transport dynamics is solely controlled by small-angle elastic scatterings, leading to transverse momentum broadening with respect to the parton's initial direction. Such a parton propagation is usually considered in the limit of transversely homogeneous matter. The transport processes admit a classical description and the transverse spatial dependence of the medium properties emerges only through the jet quenching parameter. In this work, we show that a gradient expansion of the all-order evolution equation for the partonic Wigner function leads to an evolution equation in the Boltzmann-diffusion form only up to the leading order in transverse gradients. At the second order in gradients, the quantum corrections associated with non-local interactions give rise to a novel transport that can be implemented in Monte Carlo simulations. In addition, using our results, we compute the gradient corrections to the jet quenching parameter in inhomogeneous matter.

Medium induced jet broadening in a quantum computer

QCD jets provide one of the best avenues to extract information about the quark-gluon plasma produced in the aftermath of ultra relativistic heavy ions collisions. The structure of jets is determined by multiparticle quantum interference hard to tackle using perturbative methods. When jets evolve in a QCD medium this interference pattern is modified, adding another layer of complexity. By taking advantage of the recent developments in quantum technologies, such effects might be better understood via direct quantum simulation of jet evolution. In this work, we introduce a precursor to such simulations. Based on the light-front Hamiltonian formalism, we construct a digital quantum circuit that tracks the evolution of a single hard probe in the presence of a stochastic color background. In terms of the jet quenching parameter $\hat q$, the results obtained using classical simulators of ideal quantum computers agree with known analytical results. With this study, we hope to provide a baseline for future in-medium jet physics studies using quantum computers.

A first step towards quantum simulating jet evolution in a dense medium

The fast development of quantum technologies over the last decades has offered a glimpse to a future where the quantum properties of multi-particle systems might be more fully understood. In particular, quantum computing might prove crucial to explore many aspects of high energy physics unaccessible to classical methods. In this talk, we will describe how one can use digital quantum computers to study the evolution of QCD jets in quark gluons plasmas. We construct a quantum circuit to study single particle evolution in a dense QCD medium. Focusing on the jet quenching parameter $\hat q $, we present some early numerical results for a small quantum circuit. Future extensions of this strategy are also addressed.

Medium-induced radiative kernel with the Improved Opacity Expansion

We calculate the fully differential medium-induced radiative spectrum at next-to-leading order (NLO) accuracy within the Improved Opacity Expansion (IOE) framework. This scheme allows us to gain analytical control of the radiative spectrum at low and high gluon frequencies simultaneously. The high frequency regime can be obtained in the standard opacity expansion framework in which the resulting power series diverges at the characteristic frequency $ω_c\sim \hat q L^2$. In the IOE, all orders in opacity are resumed systematically below $ω_c$ yielding an asymptotic series controlled by logarithmically suppressed remainders down to the thermal scale $T \ll ω_c$, while matching the opacity expansion at high frequency. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the IOE at NLO accuracy reproduces the characteristic Coulomb tail of the single hard scattering contribution as well as the Gaussian distribution resulting from multiple soft momentum exchanges. Finally, we compare our analytic scheme with a recent numerical solution, that includes a full resummation of multiple scatterings, for LHC-inspired medium parameters. We find a very good agreement both at low and high frequencies showcasing the performance of the IOE which provides for the first time accurate analytic formulas for radiative energy loss in the relevant perturbative kinematic regimes for dense media.

Medium induced gluon spectrum in the Improved Opacity Expansion

Over the last decades, analytical calculations of jet quenching observables have always needed to make a distinction between dense or dilute mediums. Although there are different theoretical formalisms suited for each one of these scenarios, taking into account multiple soft and single hard interactions between the probe and the background under a single approach has proven to be a difficult task. In this talk, we will introduce the Improved Opacity Expansion (IOE), which extends the well established Opacity Expansion framework beyond the hard momentum transfer tail, including the regime captured by the BDMPS-Z/ASW approximation. We will focus on the application of the IOE to the computation of the single gluon medium induced spectrum from a hard parton, which constitutes one of the most important theoretical results in jet quenching theory.

First steps towards the quantum simulation of jet quenching

The leading order $α_s$ effect in jet quenching corresponds to the broadening of the jet's transverse momentum, due to the multiple interactions with the underlying medium. A complete understanding of momentum broadening is critical for the success of jet quenching phenomenology. In this talk, we introduce a strategy to quantum simulate single particle momentum broadening in a QCD background medium. We argue that it is, in principle, possible to extract the jet quenching parameter $\hat{q}$ from such an algorithm. More importantly, this corresponds to the first step towards simulating full medium induced parton showers, which is far beyond the capabilities of classical computers.

A modified in-medium evolution equation with color coherence

QCD jets produced in heavy-ion collisions at LHC or RHIC energies partially evolve inside the produced hot and dense quark gluon plasma, offering unique opportunities to study QCD splitting processes in different backgrounds. Induced (modified) splittings are expected to be the most relevant mechanism driving the modifications of in-medium jets compared to vacuum jets for a wide sets of observables. Although color coherence among different emitters has been identified as an essential mechanism in studies of the {\it QCD antenna radiation}, it is usually neglected in the multi-gluon medium-induced cascade. This independent gluon emission approximation can be analytically proved to be valid in the limit of very large media, but corrections or modifications to it have not been computed before in the context of the evolution (or rate) equation describing the gluon cascade. We propose a modified evolution equation that includes corrections due to the interference of subsequent emitters. In order to do so, we first compute a modified splitting kernel following the usual procedure of factorizing it from the subsequent Brownian motion. The calculation is performed in the two-gluon configuration with no overlapping formation times, that is expected to provide the first correction to the completely independent picture.

Single-particle digitization strategy for quantum computation of a $ϕ^4$ scalar field theory

Motivated by the parton picture of high energy quantum chromodynamics, we develop a single-particle digitization strategy for the efficient quantum simulation of relativistic scattering processes in a $d+1$ dimensional scalar $ϕ^4$ field theory. We work out quantum algorithms for initial state preparation, time evolution and final state measurements. We outline a non-perturbative renormalization strategy in this single-particle framework.

A quantum strategy to compute the jet quenching parameter $\hat{q}$

Jet quenching, the modification of the properties of a QCD jet when the parton cascade takes place inside a medium, is an intrinsically quantum process, where color coherence effects play an essential role. Despite a very significant progress in the last years, the simulation of a full quantum medium induced cascade remains inaccessible to classical Monte Carlo parton showers. In this situation, alternative formulations are worth being tried and the fast developments in quantum computing provide a very promising direction. The goal of this paper is to introduce a strategy to quantum simulate single particle momentum broadening, the simplest building block of jet quenching. Momentum broadening is the modification of the quark or gluon transverse momentum due interactions with the underlying medium, modeled as a QCD background field. At the lowest order in $α_s$ that we consider here, momentum broadening does not involve parton splittings and particle number is conserved, greatly simplifying the quantum algorithmic implementation. This quantity is, however, very relevant for the phenomenology of RHIC, LHC or the future EIC.

Simple implementation of color coherence for the resumation of soft BDMPS-Z gluons

The evolution of QCD jets under the influence of a dense colored medium leads to the non trivial modification of the gluon emission spectrum. In the multiple soft scattering regime, for sufficiently large media, soft and wide angle emissions can be resummed (in the planar limit of QCD) due to the small formation time of each gluon emission. Similarly to DGLAP evolution, such cascades correspond to pure Markovian processes and interferences between partons are neglected. In this strict limit, color coherence effects are absent. In the vacuum this coherence effect is critical to guarantee that the shower is angular ordered. In the medium, it is known that such color coherence effects might play a role in suppressing radiation at intermediate emission angles. We present a simple procedure to implement color (de)coherence effects into the in-medium evolution equations obtained in the pure Markovian approximation. We verify that the result obtained is in accordance with previous studies regarding the role of in-medium color coherence in the evolution of the QCD antenna. The new evolution equation incorporates a novel emission kernel which enforces color coherence between emitters.

On the breaking of Casimir scaling in jet quenching

We study the breaking of Casimir scaling, $C_F/C_A$, due to the evolution of jets in a hot and extended medium. By using JEWEL, a medium modified Monte Carlo event generator validated for a wide set of observables, we are able to study separately the development of quark and gluon-initiated jets produced back-to-back with a $Z-$boson. Focusing on the $p_T$ distribution, we conclude first that the colour charge ratio is constant but larger than Casimir scaling for high $p_T$ jets. In addition, our results seem to indicate that the medium induced cascade is more similar between quarks and gluons, thus driving the overall medium shower scaling away from the vacuum expectation. Finally, we compare our results to another Monte Carlo generator and observe the same scaling violation.
