A geometrical description of untwisted 3d Dijkgraaf-Witten TQFT with defects

We give a simple, geometric and explicit construction of 3d untwisted Dijkgraaf-Witten theory with defects of all codimensions. It is given as a symmetric monoidal functor from a defect cobordism category into the category of finite-dimensional complex vector spaces. The objects of this category are oriented stratified surfaces and its morphisms are equivalence classes of stratified cobordisms, both labelled with higher categorical data. This TQFT is constructed in terms of geometric quantities such as fundamental groupoids and bundles and requires neither state sums on triangulations nor diagrammatic calculi for higher categories. It is obtained from a functor that assigns to each defect surface a representation of a gauge groupoid and to each defect cobordism a fibrant span of groupoids and an intertwiner between the groupoid representations at its boundary. It is constructed by homotopy theoretic methods and allows for an explicit computation of examples. In particular, we show how the 2d part of this defect TQFT gives a simple description of defects of all codimensions in Kitaev's quantum double model.

A categorification of Quinn's finite total homotopy TQFT with application to TQFTs and once-extended TQFTs derived from strict omega-groupoids

We first revisit the construction of Quinn's finite total homotopy TQFT, which depends on the choice of a homotopy finite space, $\boldsymbol{B}$. This constitutes a vast generalisation of the Dijkgraaf-Witten TQFT, with a trivial cocycle, and of Yetter's homotopy 2-type TQFT. We build our construction directly from homotopy theoretical techniques, and hence, as in Quinn's original notes from 1995, the construction works in all dimensions. Our aim in this is to provide background for giving in detail the construction of a once-extended TQFT categorifying Quinn's finite total homotopy TQFT, in the form of a symmetric monoidal bifunctor from the bicategory of manifolds, cobordisms and extended cobordisms, first to the symmetric monoidal bicategory of profunctors (enriched over vector spaces), and then to the Morita bicategory of algebras, bimodules and bimodule maps. These once-extended versions of Quinn's finite total homotopy TQFT likewise are defined for all dimensions, and, as with the original version, depend on the choice of a homotopy finite space, $\boldsymbol{B}$. To show the utility of this approach, we explicitly compute both Quinn's finite total homotopy TQFT, and its extended version, for the case when $\boldsymbol{B}$ is the classifying space of a homotopy finite omega-groupoid, in this paper taking the form of a crossed complex, following Brown and Higgins. The constructions in this paper include, in particular, the description of once-extended TQFTs derived from the classifying space of a finite strict 2-group, of relevance for modelling discrete higher gauge theory, although the techniques involved are considerably more general.

Exactly solvable models for 2+1D topological phases derived from crossed modules of semisimple Hopf algebras

We define an exactly solvable model for 2+1D topological phases of matter on a triangulated surface derived from a crossed module of semisimple finite-dimensional Hopf algebras, the `Hopf-algebraic higher Kitaev model'. This model generalizes both the Kitaev quantum double model for a semisimple Hopf algebra and the full higher Kitaev model derived from a 2-group, and can hence be interpreted as a Hopf-algebraic discrete higher gauge theory. We construct a family of crossed modules of semisimple Hopf algebras, $(\mathscr{F}_{\mathbb{C}}(X) \otimes \mathbb{C}E \xrightarrow{\partial} \mathscr{F}_{\mathbb{C}}(Y) \rtimes \mathbb{C} G, \triangleright)$, that depends on four finite groups, $E,G,X$ and $Y$. We calculate the ground-state spaces of the resulting model on a triangulated surface when $G=E=\{1\}$ and when $Y=\{1\}$, prove that those ground-state spaces are canonically independent of the triangulations, and so depend only on the underlying surface; and moreover we find a 2+1D TQFT whose state spaces on surfaces give the ground-state spaces. These TQFTs are particular cases of Quinn's finite total homotopy TQFT and hence the state spaces assigned to surfaces are free vector spaces on sets of homotopy classes of maps from a surface to homotopy finite spaces, in this case obtained as classifying spaces of finite groupoids and finite crossed modules of groupoids. We leave it as an open problem whether the ground-state space of the Hopf-algebraic higher Kitaev model on a triangulated surface is independent of the triangulation for general crossed modules of semisimple Hopf algebras, whether a TQFT always exists whose state space on a surface gives the ground-state space of the model, and whether the ground-state space of the model obtained from $E,G,X,Y$ can always be given a homotopical explanation.

Motion groupoids and mapping class groupoids

Here $\underline{M}$ denotes a pair $(M,A)$ of a manifold and a subset (e.g. $A=\partial M$ or $A=\emptyset$). We construct for each $\underline{M}$ its motion groupoid $\mathrm{Mot}_{\underline{M}}$, whose object set is the power set $ {\mathcal P} M$ of $M$, and whose morphisms are certain equivalence classes of continuous flows of the `ambient space' $M$, that fix $A$, acting on ${\mathcal P} M$. These groupoids generalise the classical definition of a motion group associated to a manifold $M$ and a submanifold $N$, which can be recovered by considering the automorphisms in $\mathrm{Mot}_{\underline{M}}$ of $N\in {\mathcal P} M$. We also construct the mapping class groupoid $\mathrm{MCG}_{\underline{M}}$ associated to a pair $\underline{M}$ with the same object class, whose morphisms are now equivalence classes of homeomorphisms of $M$, that fix $A$. We recover the classical definition of the mapping class group of a pair by taking automorphisms at the appropriate object. For each pair $\underline{M}$ we explicitly construct a functor $\mathsf{F}\colon \mathrm{Mot}_{\underline{M}} \to \mathrm{MCG}_{\underline{M}}$, which is the identity on objects, and prove that this is full and faithful, and hence an isomorphism, if $π_0$ and $π_1$ of the appropriate space of self-homeomorphisms of $M$ are trivial. In particular, we have an isomorphism in the physically important case $\underline{M}=([0,1]^n, \partial [0,1]^n)$, for any $n\in \mathbb{N}$. We show that the congruence relation used in the construction $\mathrm{Mot}_{\underline{M}}$ can be formulated entirely in terms of a level preserving isotopy relation on the trajectories of objects under flows -- worldlines (e.g. monotonic `tangles'). We examine several explicit examples of $\mathrm{Mot}_{\underline{M}}$ and $\mathrm{MCG}_{\underline{M}}$ demonstrating the utility of the constructions.

On a canonical lift of Artin's representation to loop braid groups

Each pointed topological space has an associated $π$-module, obtained from action of its first homotopy group on its second homotopy group. For the $3$-ball with a trivial link with $n$-components removed from its interior, its $π$-module $\mathcal{M}_n$ is of free type. In this paper we give an injection of the (extended) loop braid group into the group of automorphisms of $\mathcal{M}_n$. We give a topological interpretation of this injection, showing that it is both an extension of Artin's representation for braid groups and of Dahm's homomorphism for (extended) loop braid groups.

Representations of the Loop Braid Group and Aharonov-Bohm like effects in discrete (3+1)-dimensional higher gauge theory

We show that representations of the loop braid group arise from Aharonov-Bohm like effects in finite 2-group (3+1)-dimensional topological higher gauge theory. For this we introduce a minimal categorification of biracks, which we call W-bikoids (welded bikoids). Our main example of W-bikoids arises from finite 2-groups, realised as crossed modules of groups. Given a W-bikoid, and hence a groupoid of symmetries, we construct a family of unitary representations of the loop braid group derived from representations of the groupoid algebra. We thus give a candidate for higher Bais' flux metamorphosis, and hence also a version of a `higher quantum group'.

Higher lattices, discrete two-dimensional holonomy and topological phases in (3+1) D with higher gauge symmetry

Higher gauge theory is a higher order version of gauge theory that makes possible the definition of 2-dimensional holonomy along surfaces embedded in a manifold where a gauge 2-connection is present. In this paper, we will continue the study of Hamiltonian models for discrete higher gauge theory on a lattice decomposition of a manifold. In particular, we show that a previously proposed construction for higher lattice gauge theory is well-defined, including in particular a Hamiltonian for topological phases of matter in 3+1 dimensions. Our construction builds upon the Kitaev quantum double model, replacing the finite gauge connection with a finite gauge 2-group 2-connection. Our Hamiltonian higher lattice gauge theory model is defined on spatial manifolds of arbitrary dimension presented by slightly {\it combinatorialised} CW-decompositions (2-lattice decompositions), whose 1-cells and 2-cells carry discrete 1-dimensional and 2-dimensional holonomy data. We prove that the ground-state degeneracy of Hamiltonian higher lattice gauge theory is a topological invariant of manifolds, coinciding with the number of homotopy classes of maps from the manifold to the classifying space of the underlying gauge 2-group. The operators of our Hamiltonian model are closely related to discrete 2-dimensional holonomy operators for discretised 2-connections on manifolds with a 2-lattice decomposition. We therefore address the definition of discrete 2-dimensional holonomy for surfaces embedded in 2-lattices. Several results concerning the well-definedness of discrete 2-dimensional holonomy, and its construction in a combinatorial and algebraic topological setting are presented.

Two-Fold Homotopy of 2-Crossed Module Maps of Commutative Algebras

We address the homotopy theory of 2-crossed modules of commutative algebras. In particular, we define the concept of a 2-fold homotopy between a pair of 1-fold homotopies connecting 2-crossed module maps $\A \to \A'$. We also prove that if the domain 2-crossed module $\A$ is free up to order one (i.e. if the bottom algebra is a polynomial algebra) then we have a 2-groupoid of 2-crossed module maps $\A \to \A'$ and their homotopies and 2-fold homotopies.

Topological phases from higher gauge symmetry in 3+1D

We propose an exactly solvable Hamiltonian for topological phases in $3+1$ dimensions utilising ideas from higher lattice gauge theory, where the gauge symmetry is given by a finite 2-group. We explicitly show that the model is a Hamiltonian realisation of Yetter's homotopy 2-type topological quantum field theory whereby the groundstate projector of the model defined on the manifold $M^3$ is given by the partition function of the underlying topological quantum field theory for $M^3\times [0,1]$. We show that this result holds in any dimension and illustrate it by computing the ground state degeneracy for a selection of spatial manifolds and 2-groups. As an application we show that a subset of our model is dual to a class of Abelian Walker-Wang models describing $3+1$ dimensional topological insulators.

Pointed Homotopy of Maps Between 2-Crossed Modules of Commutative Algebras

We address the homotopy theory of 2-crossed modules of commutative algebras, which are equivalent to simplicial commutative algebras with Moore complex of length two. In particular, we construct for maps of 2-crossed modules a homotopy relation, and prove that it yields an equivalence relation in very unrestricted cases (freeness up to order one of the domain 2-crossed module). This latter condition strictly includes the case when the domain is cofibrant. Furthermore, we prove that this notion of homotopy yields a groupoid with objects being the 2-crossed module maps between two fixed 2-crossed modules (with free up to order one domain), the morphisms being the homotopies between 2-crossed module maps.

Infinitesimal 2-braidings and differential crossed modules

We categorify the notion of an infinitesimal braiding in a linear strict symmetric monoidal category, leading to the notion of a (strict) infinitesimal 2-braiding in a linear symmetric strict monoidal 2-category. We describe the associated categorification of the 4-term relation, leading to six categorified relations. We prove that any infinitesimal 2-braiding gives rise to a flat and fake flat 2-connection in the configuration space of $n$ particles in the complex plane, hence to a categorification of the Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov connection. We discuss infinitesimal 2-braidings in a 2-category naturally assigned to every differential crossed module, leading to the notion of a quasi-invariant tensor in a differential crossed module. Finally we prove that quasi-invariant tensors exist in the differential crossed module associated to the String Lie-2-algebra.

Link invariants from finite categorical groups and braided crossed modules

We define an invariant of tangles and framed tangles given a finite crossed module and a pair of functions, called a Reidemeister pair, satisfying natural properties. We give several examples of Reidemeister pairs derived from racks, quandles, rack and quandle cocycles, 2-crossed modules and braided crossed modules. We prove that our construction includes all rack and quandle cohomology (framed) link invariants, as well as the Eisermann invariant of knots, for which we also find a lifting by using braided crossed modules.

Categorifying the $sl(2,C)$ Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov Connection via an Infinitesimal 2-Yang-Baxter Operator in the String Lie-2-Algebra

We construct a flat (and fake-flat) 2-connection in the configuration space of $n$ indistinguishable particles in the complex plane, which categorifies the $sl(2,C)$-Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov connection obtained from the adjoint representation of $sl(2,C)$. This will be done by considering the adjoint categorical representation of the string Lie 2-algebra and the notion of an infinitesimal 2-Yang-Baxter operator in a differential crossed module. Specifically, we find an infinitesimal 2-Yang-Baxter operator in the string Lie 2-algebra, proving that any (strict) categorical representation of the string Lie-2-algebra, in a chain-complex of vector spaces, yields a flat and (fake flat) 2-connection in the configuration space, categorifying the $sl(2,C)$-Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov connection. We will give very detailed explanation of all concepts involved, in particular discussing the relevant theory of 2-connections and their two dimensional holonomy, in the specific case of 2-groups derived from chain complexes of vector spaces.

Categorifying the Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov Connection

In the context of higher gauge theory, we construct a flat and fake flat 2-connection, in the configuration space of $n$ particles in the complex plane, categorifying the Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov connection. To this end, we define the differential crossed module of horizontal 2-chord diagrams, categorifying the Lie algebra of horizontal chord diagrams in a set of $n$ parallel copies of the interval. This therefore yields a categorification of the 4-term relation. We carefully discuss the representation theory of differential crossed modules in chain-complexes of vector spaces, which makes it possible to formulate the notion of an infinitesimal 2-R matrix in a differential crossed module.

The Fundamental Crossed Module of the Complement of a Knotted Surface

We prove that if $M$ is a CW-complex and $M^1$ is its 1-skeleton then the crossed module $Π_2(M,M^1)$ depends only on the homotopy type of $M$ as a space, up to free products, in the category of crossed modules, with $Π_2(D^2,S^1)$. From this it follows that, if $G$ is a finite crossed module and $M$ is finite, then the number of crossed module morphisms $Π_2(M,M^1) \to G$ can be re-scaled to a homotopy invariant $I_G(M)$, depending only on the homotopy 2-type of $M$. We describe an algorithm for calculating $π_2(M,M^{(1)})$ as a crossed module over $π_1(M^{(1)})$, in the case when $M$ is the complement of a knotted surface $Σ$ in $S^4$ and $M^{(1)}$ is the handlebody made from the 0- and 1-handles of a handle decomposition of $M$. Here $Σ$ is presented by a knot with bands. This in particular gives us a geometric method for calculating the algebraic 2-type of the complement of a knotted surface from a hyperbolic splitting of it. We prove in addition that the invariant $I_G$ yields a non-trivial invariant of knotted surfaces in $S^4$ with good properties with regards to explicit calculations.

Invariants of Welded Virtual Knots Via Crossed Module Invariants of Knotted Surfaces

We define an invariant of welded virtual knots from each finite crossed module by considering crossed module invariants of ribbon knotted surfaces which are naturally associated with them. We elucidate that the invariants obtained are non trivial by calculating explicit examples. We define welded virtual graphs and consider invariants of them defined in a similar way.

Invariants of Spin Networks Embedded in Three-Manifolds

We study the invariants of spin networks embedded in a three-dimensional manifold which are based on the path integral for SU(2) BF-Theory. These invariants appear naturally in Loop Quantum Gravity, and have been defined as spin-foam state sums. By using the Chain-Mail technique, we give a more general definition of these invariants, and show that the state-sum definition is a special case. This provides a rigorous proof that the state-sum invariants of spin networks are topological invariants. We derive various results about the BF-Theory spin network invariants, and we find a relation with the corresponding invariants defined from Chern-Simons Theory, i.e. the Witten-Reshetikhin-Turaev invariants. We also prove that the BF-Theory spin network invariants coincide with V. Turaev's definition of invariants of coloured graphs embedded in 3-manifolds and thick surfaces, constructed by using shadow-world evaluations. Our framework therefore provides a unified view of these invariants.

On Yetter's Invariant and an Extension of the Dijkgraaf-Witten Invariant to Categorical Groups

We give an interpretation of Yetter's Invariant of manifolds $M$ in terms of the homotopy type of the function space $TOP(M,B(G))$, where $G$ is a crossed module and $B(G)$ is its classifying space. From this formulation, there follows that Yetter's invariant depends only on the homotopy type of $M$, and the weak homotopy type of the crossed module $G$. We use this interpretation to define a twisting of Yetter's Invariant by cohomology classes of crossed modules, defined as cohomology classes of their classifying spaces, in the form of a state sum invariant. In particular, we obtain an extension of the Dijkgraaf-Witten Invariant of manifolds to categorical groups. The straightforward extension to crossed complexes is also considered.
