Global existence for a Fritz John equation in expanding FLRW spacetimes

We study the family of semilinear wave equations $\square_{\mathbf{g}_p}ϕ=(\partial_tϕ)^2$, on fixed expanding FLRW spacetimes, having $\mathbb{R}^3$ spatial slices and undergoing a power law expansion, with scale factor $a(t)=t^p$, $0< p \le 1$. This is a natural generalization to a non-stationary background of a famous Fritz John ''blow-up'' equation in $\mathbb{R}^{1+3}$ (corresponding to $p=0$, i.e. the case in which $\mathbf{g}_0$ is the Minkowski metric). While, in Minkowski spacetime ($p=0$), non-trivial solutions to this equation are known to diverge in finite time, here we prove that, on the referred FLRW backgrounds ($0 1$) and relied on the integrability of the inverse of the scale factor to establish future global well-posedness. In the current work, where such an integrability condition is lacking, we rely on a vector field method that captures and combines dispersive estimates with the spacetime expansion to control the solution and suppress the nonlinear blow-up mechanism. To achieve this, we commute the Laplace-Beltrami operator with a boosts-free subset of the Poincaré algebra and employ Klainerman-Sideris types of inequalities. Our strategy is general and is developed to handle the non-stationary nature of FLRW spacetimes. While we focus solely on this Fritz John type of equation, which serves as a prototype to study blow-up of non-linear waves, our approach provides a rigorous proof of the regularizing effects of spacetime expansion and can be exploited for a wider range of applications and nonlinearities.

A ZeNN architecture to avoid the Gaussian trap

We propose a new simple architecture, Zeta Neural Networks (ZeNNs), in order to overcome several shortcomings of standard multi-layer perceptrons (MLPs). Namely, in the large width limit, MLPs are non-parametric, they do not have a well-defined pointwise limit, they lose non-Gaussian attributes and become unable to perform feature learning; moreover, finite width MLPs perform poorly in learning high frequencies. The new ZeNN architecture is inspired by three simple principles from harmonic analysis: i) Enumerate the perceptons and introduce a non-learnable weight to enforce convergence; ii) Introduce a scaling (or frequency) factor; iii) Choose activation functions that lead to near orthogonal systems. We will show that these ideas allow us to fix the referred shortcomings of MLPs. In fact, in the infinite width limit, ZeNNs converge pointwise, they exhibit a rich asymptotic structure beyond Gaussianity, and perform feature learning. Moreover, when appropriate activation functions are chosen, (finite width) ZeNNs excel at learning high-frequency features of functions with low dimensional domains.

The Positivity of the Neural Tangent Kernel

The Neural Tangent Kernel (NTK) has emerged as a fundamental concept in the study of wide Neural Networks. In particular, it is known that the positivity of the NTK is directly related to the memorization capacity of sufficiently wide networks, i.e., to the possibility of reaching zero loss in training, via gradient descent. Here we will improve on previous works and obtain a sharp result concerning the positivity of the NTK of feedforward networks of any depth. More precisely, we will show that, for any non-polynomial activation function, the NTK is strictly positive definite. Our results are based on a novel characterization of polynomial functions which is of independent interest.

Message in a bottle: energy extraction from bouncing geometries

Quantum gravity phenomenology suggests the interesting possibility that black holes are not eternal. Collapse could be halted by some unknown mechanism, or Hawking radiation might leave behind a regular spacetime. Here we investigate a simple bouncing geometry, with (outer and inner) apparent horizons but no event horizon. We show that the inner horizon blueshifts radiation, which can lead to a gigantic amplification of energy observable from far away regions. Thus, if such phenomena exists in our universe, they can power high-energy bursts at late stages in their lives, when the horizons disappear and spacetime bounces back to a flat geometry.

Improved decay estimates and $C^2$-asymptotic stability of solutions to the Einstein-scalar field system in spherical symmetry

We investigate the asymptotic stability of solutions to the characteristic initial value problem for the Einstein (massless) scalar field system with a positive cosmological constant. We prescribe spherically symmetric initial data on a future null cone with a wider range of decaying profiles than previously considered. New estimates are then derived in order to prove that, for small data, the system has a unique global classical solution. We also show that the solution decays exponentially in (Bondi) time and that the radial decay is essentially polynomial, although containing logarithmic factors in some special cases. This improved asymptotic analysis allows us to show that, under appropriate and natural decaying conditions on the initial data, the future asymptotic solution is differentiable, up to and including spatial null-infinity, and approaches the de Sitter solution, uniformly, in a neighborhood of infinity. Moreover, we analyze the decay of derivatives of the solution up to second order showing the (uniform) $C^2$-asymptotic stability of the de Sitter attractor in this setting. This corresponds to a surprisingly strong realization of the cosmic no-hair conjecture.

Semilinear wave equations on accelerated expanding FLRW spacetimes

We identify a large class of systems of semilinear wave equations, on fixed accelerated expanding FLRW spacetimes, with nearly at spatial slices, for which we prove small data future global well-posedness. The family of systems we consider is large in the sense that, among other examples, it includes general wave maps, as well as natural generalizations of some of Fritz John's "blow up" equations (whose future blow up disappears, in our setting, as a consequence of the spacetime expansion). We also establish decay upper bounds, which are sharp within the family of systems under analysis.

Addendum to "Strong cosmic censorship: The nonlinear story"

We clarify a number of issues that arise when extending the analysis of Strong Cosmic Censorship (SCC) to perturbations of highly charged Reissner-Nordström de Sitter (RNdS) spacetimes. The linear stability of the Cauchy horizon can be determined from the spectral gap of quasinormal modes, thus giving a clear idea of the ranges of parameters that are likely to lead to SCC violations for infinitesimally small perturbations. However, the situation becomes much more subtle once nonlinear backreaction is taken into account. These subtleties have created a considerable amount of confusion in the literature regarding the conclusions one is able to derive about SCC from the available numerical simulations. Here we present new numerical results concerning charged self-gravitating scalar fields in spherical symmetry, correct some previous claims concerning the neutral case, and argue that the existing numerical codes are insufficient to draw conclusions about the potential failure of SCC for near extremal RNdS black hole spacetimes.

Global solutions to the spherically symmetric Einstein-scalar field system with a positive cosmological constant in Bondi coordinates

We consider a characteristic initial value problem, with initial data given on a future null cone, for the Einstein (massless) scalar field system with a positive cosmological constant, in Bondi coordinates. We prove that, for small data, this system has a unique global classical solution which is causally geodesically complete to the future and decays polynomially in radius and exponentially in Bondi time, approaching the de Sitter solution.

The formation of trapped surfaces in the gravitational collapse of spherically symmetric scalar fields with a positive cosmological constant

Given spherically symmetric characteristic initial data for the Einstein-scalar field system with a positive cosmological constant, we provide a criterion, in terms of the dimensionless size and dimensionless renormalized mass content of an annular region of the data, for the formation of a future trapped surface. This corresponds to an extension of Christodoulou's classical criterion by the inclusion of the cosmological term.

Decay of solutions of the wave equation in expanding cosmological spacetimes

We study the decay of solutions of the wave equation in some expanding cosmological spacetimes, namely flat Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) models and the cosmological region of the Reissner-Nordström-de Sitter (RNdS) solution. By introducing a partial energy and using an iteration scheme, we find that, for initial data with finite higher order energies, the decay rate of the time derivative is faster than previously existing estimates. For models undergoing accelerated expansion, our decay rate appears to be (almost) sharp.

Elastic shocks in relativistic rigid rods and balls

We study the free boundary problem for the "hard phase" material introduced by Christodoulou, both for rods in (1+1)-dimensional Minkowski spacetime and for spherically symmetric balls in (3+1)-dimensional Minkowski spacetime. Unlike Christodoulou, we do not consider a "soft phase", and so we regard this material as an elastic medium, capable of both compression and stretching. We prove that shocks must be null hypersurfaces, and derive the conditions to be satisfied at a free boundary. We solve the equations of motion of the rods explicitly, and we prove existence of solutions to the equations of motion of the spherically symmetric balls for an arbitrarily long (but finite) time, given initial conditions sufficiently close to those for the relaxed ball at rest. In both cases we find that the solutions contain shocks if and only if the pressure or its time derivative do not vanish at the free boundary initially. These shocks interact with the free boundary, causing it to lose regularity.

Cosmic no-hair in spherically symmetric black hole spacetimes

We analyze in detail the geometry and dynamics of the cosmological region arising in spherically symmetric black hole solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell-scalar field system with a positive cosmological constant. More precisely, we solve, for such a system, a characteristic initial value problem with data emulating a dynamic cosmological horizon. Our assumptions are fairly weak, in that we only assume that the data approaches that of a subextremal Reissner-Nordström-de Sitter black hole, without imposing any rate of decay. We then show that the radius (of symmetry) blows up along any null ray parallel to the cosmological horizon ("near" $i^+$), in such a way that $r=+\infty$ is, in an appropriate sense, a spacelike hypersurface. We also prove a version of the Cosmic No-Hair Conjecture by showing that in the past of any causal curve reaching infinity both the metric and the Riemann curvature tensor asymptote those of a de Sitter spacetime. Finally, we discuss conditions under which all the previous results can be globalized.

Strong cosmic censorship: The nonlinear story

A satisfactory formulation of the laws of physics entails that the future evolution of a physical system should be determined from appropriate initial conditions. The existence of Cauchy horizons in solutions of the Einstein field equations is therefore problematic, and expected to be an unstable artifact of General Relativity. This is asserted by the Strong Cosmic Censorship Conjecture, which was recently put into question by an analysis of the linearized equations in the exterior of charged black holes in an expanding universe. Here, we numerically evolve the nonlinear Einstein-Maxwell-scalar field equations with a positive cosmological constant, under spherical symmetry, and provide strong evidence that mass inflation indeed does not occur in the near extremal regime. This shows that nonlinear effects might not suffice to save the Strong Cosmic Censorship Conjecture.

Higher Order Linear Stability and Instability of Reissner-Nordström's Cauchy Horizon

We consider smooth solutions of the wave equation, on a fixed black hole region of a subextremal Reissner-Nordström (asymptotically flat, de Sitter or anti-de Sitter) spacetime, whose restrictions to the event horizon have compact support. We provide criteria, in terms of surface gravities, for the waves to remain in $C^l$, $l\geq 1$, up to and including the Cauchy horizon. We also provide sufficient conditions for the blow up of solutions in $C^1$ and $H^1$.

On the occurrence of mass inflation for the Einstein-Maxwell-scalar field system with a cosmological constant and an exponential Price law

In this paper we study the spherically symmetric characteristic initial data problem for the Einstein-Maxwell-scalar field system with a positive cosmological constant in the interior of a black hole, assuming an exponential Price law along the event horizon. More precisely, we construct open sets of characteristic data which, on the outgoing initial null hypersurface (taken to be the event horizon), converges exponentially to a reference Reissner-Nördstrom black hole at infinity. We prove the stability of the radius function at the Cauchy horizon, and show that, depending on the decay rate of the initial data, mass inflation may or may not occur. In the latter case, we find that the solution can be extended across the Cauchy horizon with continuous metric and Christoffel symbols in $L^2_{\rm loc}$, thus violating the Christodoulou-Chruściel version of strong cosmic censorship.

Bounded energy waves on the black hole interior of Reissner-Nordström-de Sitter

Motivated by the Strong Cosmic Censorship Conjecture, in the presence of a cosmological constant, we consider solutions of the scalar wave equation $\Box_gϕ=0$ on fixed subextremal Reissner--Nordström--de Sitter backgrounds $({\mathcal M}, g)$, without imposing symmetry assumptions on $ϕ$. We provide a sufficient condition, in terms of surface gravities and a parameter for an exponential decaying Price law, for a local energy of the waves to remain bounded up to the Cauchy horizon. The energy we consider controls, in particular, regular transverse derivatives at the Cauchy horizon; this allows us to extend the solutions with bounded energy, to the Cauchy horizon, as functions in $C^0\cap H^1_{loc}$. Our results correspond to another manifestation of the potential breakdown of Strong Cosmic Censorship in the positive cosmological constant setting.

On the global uniqueness for the Einstein-Maxwell-scalar field system with a cosmological constant. Part 3: Mass inflation and extendibility of the solutions

This paper is the third part of a trilogy dedicated to the following problem: given spherically symmetric characteristic initial data for the Einstein-Maxwell-scalar field system with a cosmological constant $Λ$, with the data on the outgoing initial null hypersurface given by a subextremal Reissner-Nordstrom black hole event horizon, study the future extendibility of the corresponding maximal globally hyperbolic development as a "suitably regular" Lorentzian manifold. In the first part of this series we established the well posedness of the characteristic problem, whereas in the second part we studied the stability of the radius function at the Cauchy horizon. In this third and final paper we show that, depending on the decay rate of the initial data, mass inflation may or may not occur. When the mass is controlled, it is possible to obtain continuous extensions of the metric across the Cauchy horizon with square integrable Christoffel symbols. Under slightly stronger conditions, we can bound the gradient of the scalar field. This allows the construction of (non-isometric) extensions of the maximal development which are classical solutions of the Einstein equations. Our results provide evidence against the validity of the strong cosmic censorship conjecture when $Λ>0$.

On the global uniqueness for the Einstein-Maxwell-scalar field system with a cosmological constant. Part 2: Structure of the solutions and stability of the Cauchy horizon

This paper is the second part of a trilogy dedicated to the following problem: given spherically symmetric characteristic initial data for the Einstein-Maxwell-scalar field system with a cosmological constant $Λ$, with the data on the outgoing initial null hypersurface given by a subextremal Reissner-Nordstrom black hole event horizon, study the future extendibility of the corresponding maximal globally hyperbolic development as a "suitably regular" Lorentzian manifold. In the first paper of this sequence, we established well posedness of the characteristic problem with general initial data. In this second paper, we generalize the results of Dafermos on the stability of the radius function at the Cauchy horizon by including a cosmological constant. This requires a considerable deviation from the strategy followed by Dafermos, focusing on the level sets of the radius function instead of the red-shift and blue-shift regions. We also present new results on the global structure of the solution when the free data is not identically zero in a neighborhood of the origin. In the third and final paper, we will consider the issue of mass inflation and extendibility of solutions beyond the Cauchy horizon.
