Observational signatures of hot spots orbiting horizonless objects

Pushed by a number of advances, electromagnetic observatories have now reached the horizon scale of supermassive black holes. The existence and properties of horizons in our universe is one of the outstanding fundamental issues that can now be addressed. Here we investigate the ability to discriminate between black holes and compact, horizonless objects, focusing on the lensing of hot spots around compact objects. We work in particular with boson and Proca stars as central objects, and show that the absence of a horizon gives rise to a characteristic feature -- photons that plough through the central object and produce an extra image. This feature should be universal for central objects made of matter weakly coupled to the standard model.

Cosmological sudden singularities in $f(R,T)$ gravity

In this work, we study the possibility of finite-time future cosmological singularities appearing in $f(R,T)$ gravity, where $R$ is the Ricci scalar and $T$ is the trace of the stress-energy tensor. We present the theory in both the geometrical and the dynamically equivalent scalar-tensor representation and obtain the respective equations of motion. In a background Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) universe with an arbitrary curvature and for a generic $C^\infty$ function $f(R,T)$, we prove that the conservation of the stress-energy tensor prevents the appearance of sudden singularities in the cosmological context at any order in the time-derivatives of the scale factor. However, if this assumption is dropped, the theory allows for sudden singularities to appear at the level of the third time-derivative of the scale factor $a(t)$, which are compensated by divergences in either the first time-derivatives of the energy density $ρ(t)$ or the isotropic pressure $p(t)$. For these cases, we introduce a cosmological model featuring a sudden singularity that is consistent with the current measurements for the cosmological parameters, namely, the Hubble constant, deceleration parameter, and age of the universe, and provide predictions for the still unmeasured jerk and snap parameters. Finally, we analyse the constraints on a particular model of the function $f(R,T)$ that guarantees that the system evolves in a direction favorable to the energy conditions at the divergence time.

Cosmology in scalar-tensor $f(R,T)$ gravity

In this work, we use reconstruction methods to obtain cosmological solutions in the recently developed scalar-tensor representation of $f(R,T)$ gravity. Assuming that matter is described by an isotropic perfect fluid and the spacetime is homogeneous and isotropic, i.e., the Friedmann-Lemaître-Robsertson-Walker (FLRW) universe, the energy density, the pressure, and the scalar field associated with the arbitrary dependency of the action in $T$ can be written generally as functions of the scale factor. We then select three particular forms of the scale factor: an exponential expansion with ${a(t)\propto e^t}$ (motivated by the de Sitter solution); and two types of power-law expansion with ${a(t)\propto t^{1/2}}$ and ${a(t)\propto t^{2/3}}$ (motivated by the behaviors of radiation- and matter-dominated universes in general relativity, respectively). A complete analysis for different curvature parameters ${k=\{-1,0,1\}}$ and equation of state parameters ${w=\{-1,0,1/3\}}$ is provided. Finally, the explicit forms of the functions $f\left(R,T\right)$ associated with the scalar-field potentials of the representation used are deduced.

Effects of Cuscuton dynamics on braneworld configurations in the scalar-tensor representation of $f\left(R,T\right)$ gravity

In this work we study braneworld configurations in the scalar-tensor representation of the $f\left(R,T\right)$ gravity theory in the presence of a Cuscuton term in the source field matter Lagrangian. We start by deriving the scalar-tensor representation of the theory and obtaining its respective equations of motion. We then introduce the standard metric for a flat braneworld model with one extra dimension for the general case of a $f\left(R,T\right)$ theory and study two different models for the source field. Given the complexity of the field equations, these solutions are obtained numerically. In these cases, the Cuscuton term effectively amplifies the effect, by increasing the height of the stability potential barrier and, consequently, the depth of the minimum of the graviton zero-mode on the brane. Finally, we study the particular cases of $F(R)+T$ and $R+G\left(T\right)$, for which only the scalar fields $φ$ or $ψ$ are present, respectively, and we prove that the presence of the scalar field $φ$ is essential in the development of internal structure on the brane.

Impact of compactlike and asymmetric configurations of thick branes on the scalar-tensor representation of $f\left(R,T\right)$ gravity

In this work we study braneworld models in generalized $f\left(R,T\right)$ gravity theories where the action depends on a function of the Ricci scalar $R$ and the trace of the stress-energy tensor $T$. We explore the so-called scalar-tensor representation of the theory, where the dependence on $R$ and $T$ are exchanged for two auxiliary real scalar fields. We introduce a first-order formalism to relate the auxiliary fields with the source field of brane and analyze four distinct possibilities of current interest regarding compactification and asymmetry of the brane. We investigate the behavior of the auxiliary fields and their stability in each one of the four cases. For the models where the solution of the source field engenders compact behavior, the auxiliary fields exhibit a hybrid structure, behaving differently inside and outside the compact region described by the source configuration. In particular, we found that the solutions of the auxiliary fields are significantly modified in models where the geometry is strongly influenced by the source field. Moreover, for the model capable of engendering asymmetric features, the two auxiliary fields also respond to modifications on the parameter that controls the asymmetry of the system.

$U(1)$ local strings in generalized hybrid metric-Palatini gravity

In this work we will explore $U(1)$ local cosmic string solutions in the context of the generalized hybrid metric-Palatini theory of gravity in its scalar-tensor representation. Using a general static cylindrically symmetric metric to find the dynamical equations for this particular case, we will simplify the equations by imposing boost invariance along $t$ and $z$ directions. The strings properties are determined by both scalar fields and by the effective potential, function of the scalar fields. While for some forms of the potential, the dynamical equations can be solved exactly, for more general forms of the potential the solutions are found numerically. Several stable string configurations were found, whose basic parameters depend essentially on the effective field potential, and on the boundary conditions.

Cosmology in the novel scalar-tensor representation of $f(R,T)$ gravity

We apply cosmological reconstruction methods to the $f(R,T)$ modified gravity, in its recently developed scalar-tensor representation. We do this analysis assuming a perfect fluid in a Friedmann-Lemaître-Robsertson-Walker (FLRW) universe. In this contribution we show the equations of motion obtained and we present the solutions found for one of the particular cases we analysed: an exponential evolution of the cosmological scale factor.

Cosmic strings in generalized hybrid metric-Palatini gravity

We consider the possible existence of gravitationally bound stringlike objects in the framework of the generalized hybrid metric-Palatini gravity theory, in which the gravitational action is represented by an arbitrary function of the Ricci and of the Palatini scalars, respectively. The theory admits an equivalent scalar-tensor representation in terms of two independent scalar fields. Assuming cylindrical symmetry, and the boost invariance of the metric, we obtain the gravitational field equations that describe cosmic stringlike structures in the theory. The physical and geometrical properties of the cosmic strings are determined by the two scalar fields, as well by an effective field potential, functionally dependent on both scalar fields. The field equations can be exactly solved for a vanishing, and a constant potential, respectively, with the corresponding string tension taking both negative and positive values. Furthermore, for more general classes of potentials, having an additive and a multiplicative algebraic structure in the two scalar fields, the gravitational field equations are solved numerically. For each potential we investigate the effects of the variations of the potential parameters and of the boundary conditions on the structure of the cosmic string. In this way, we obtain a large class of stable stringlike astrophysical configurations, whose basic parameters (string tension and radius) depend essentially on the effective field potential, and on the boundary conditions.

Junction conditions for generalized hybrid metric-Palatini gravity with applications

The generalized hybrid metric-Palatini gravity is a theory of gravitation that has an action composed of a Lagrangian $f(R,\cal R)$, where $f$ is a function of the metric Ricci scalar $R$ and a new Ricci scalar $\cal R$ formed from a Palatini connection, plus a matter Lagrangian. This theory can be rewritten by trading the new geometric degrees of freedom of $f(R,\cal R)$ into two scalar fields, $φ$ and $ψ$, yielding an equivalent scalar-tensor theory. Given a spacetime theory, the next step is to find solutions. To construct solutions it is often necessary to know the junction conditions between two regions at a separation hypersurface $Σ$, with each region being an independent solution. The junction conditions for the generalized hybrid metric-Palatini gravity are found here, in the geometric and in the scalar-tensor representations, and in addition, for each representation, the junction conditions for a matching with a thin-shell and for a smooth matching at $Σ$ are worked out. These junction conditions are applied to three configurations, a star, a quasistar with a black hole, and a wormhole. The star has a Minkowski interior, a thin shell at the interface with all the energy conditions being satisfied, and a Schwarzschild exterior with mass $M$, and for this theory the matching can only be performed at the shell radius given by $r_Σ=\frac{9M}4$, the Buchdahl radius in general relativity. The quasistar with a black hole has an interior Schwarzschild black hole surrounded by a thick shell that matches smoothly to a mass $M$ Schwarzschild exterior at the light ring, and with the energy conditions being satisfied everywhere. The wormhole has an interior that contains the throat, a thin shell at the interface, and a Schwarzschild-AdS exterior with mass $M$ and negative cosmological constant $Λ$, with the null energy condition being obeyed.

Thick branes in the scalar-tensor representation of $f(R,T)$ gravity

Braneworld scenarios consider our observable universe as a brane embedded in a five-dimensional bulk. In this work, we consider thick braneworld systems in the recently proposed dynamically equivalent scalar-tensor representation of $f(R,T)$ gravity, where $R$ is the Ricci scalar and $T$ the trace of the stress-energy tensor. In the general $f\left(R,T\right)$ case we consider two different models: a brane model without matter fields where the geometry is supported solely by the gravitational fields, and a second model where matter is described by a scalar field with a potential. The particular cases for which the function $f\left(R,T\right)$ is separable in the forms $F\left(R\right)+T$ and $R+G\left(T\right)$, which give rise to scalar-tensor representations with a single auxiliary scalar field, are studied separately. The stability of the gravitational sector is investigated and the models are shown to be stable against small perturbations of the metric. Furthermore, we show that in the $f\left(R,T\right)$ model in the presence of an extra matter field, the shape of the graviton zero-mode develops internal structure under appropriate choices of the parameters of the model.

Double gravitational layer traversable wormholes in hybrid metric-Palatini gravity

In this work, we explore the existence of traversable wormhole solutions supported by double gravitational layer thin-shells and satisfying the Null Energy Condition (NEC) throughout the whole spacetime, in a quadratic-linear form of the generalized hybrid metric-Palatini gravity. We start by showing that for a particular quadratic-linear form of the action, the junction conditions on the continuity of the Ricci scalar $R$ and the Palatini Ricci scalar $\mathcal R$ of the theory can be discarded without the appearance of undefined distribution terms in the field equations. As a consequence, a double gravitational layer thin-shell arises at the separation hypersurface. We then outline a general method to find traversable wormhole solutions satisfying the NEC at the throat and provide an example. Finally, we use the previously derived junction conditions to match the interior wormhole solution to an exterior vacuum and asymptotic flat solution, thus obtaining a full traversable wormhole solution supported by a double gravitational layer thin-shell and satisfying the NEC. Unlike the wormhole solutions previously obtained in the scalar-tensor representation of this theory, which were scarce and required fine-tuning, the solutions obtained through this method are numerous and exist for a wide variety of metrics and actions.

Sudden singularities in generalized hybrid metric-Palatini cosmologies

In this work, we explore cosmological sudden singularities arising in the dynamically equivalent scalar-tensor representation of generalized hybrid metric-Palatini gravity. Using a FLRW background, we show that the structure of the field equations prevents sudden singularities from arising at time derivatives of the scale factor of orders lower than four, but that they are allowed to appear for time derivatives of higher orders. Imposing an ansatz for the scale factor, we provide an explicit solution where these sudden singularities appear in the fourth-order time derivative of the scale factor. A comparison of the Hubble and deceleration parameters arising from this model with the experimental measurements from the Planck Satellite allow us to impose constraints on the time span for which the occurrence of sudden singularities becomes likely in our universe, as measured from the Big Bang.

Junction conditions and thin-shells in perfect-fluid $f\left(R,T\right)$ gravity

In this work we derive the junction conditions for the matching between two spacetimes at a separation hypersurface in the perfect-fluid version of $f\left(R,T\right)$ gravity, not only in the usual geometrical representation but also in a dynamically equivalent scalar-tensor representation. We start with the general case in which a thin-shell separates the two spacetimes at the separation hypersurface, for which the general junction conditions are deduced, and the particular case for smooth matching is considered when the stress-energy tensor of the thin-shell vanishes. The set of junction conditions is similar to the one previously obtained for $f\left(R\right)$ gravity but features also constraints in the continuity of the trace of the stress-energy tensor $T_{ab}$ and its partial derivatives, which force the thin-shell to satisfy the equation of state of radiation $σ=2p_t$. As a consequence, a necessary and sufficient condition for spherically symmetric thin-shells to satisfy all the energy conditions is the positivity of its energy density $σ$. For specific forms of the function $f\left(R,T\right)$, the continuity of $R$ and $T$ ceases to be mandatory but a gravitational double-layer arises at the separation hypersurface. The Martinez thin-shell system and a thin-shell surrounding a central black-hole are provided as examples of application.

Weak-field regime of the generalized hybrid metric-Palatini gravity

In this work we explore the dynamics of the generalized hybrid metric-Palatini theory of gravity in the weak-field, slow-motion regime. We start by introducing the equivalent scalar-tensor representation of the theory, which contains two scalar degrees of freedom, and perform a conformal transformation to the Einstein frame. Linear perturbations of the metric in a Minkowskian background are then studied for the metric and both scalar fields. The effective Newton constant and the PPN parameter $γ$ of the theory are extracted after transforming back to the (original) Jordan frame. Two particular cases where the general method ceases to be applicable are approached separately. A comparison of these results with observational constraints is then used to impose bounds on the masses and coupling constants of the scalar fields.

Novel modified gravity braneworld configurations with a Lagrange multiplier

In this work we deal with thick brane solutions in the warped five-dimensional braneworld scenario with a single extra spatial dimension of infinite extent, for a class of modified theories of gravity with a Lagrange multiplier. We first present the action, describe the gravity and field equations, outline a strategy to find explicit solutions and explore the stability of the gravitational sector. The investigation deals mainly with the construction of a first order framework capable of using a single scalar field to simulate warp functions that appear in two-field models. In particular, we find specific symmetric and asymmetric brane configurations that engender asymptotic profiles with symmetric and asymmetric five-dimensional anti-de Sitter geometries. Thus, including a Lagrange multiplier unveils an alternative approach to induce brane structure using a single scalar field, tracing out new avenues of research in braneworld scenarios, naturally leading to interesting results for the localization of matter fields in the brane.

Thick brane structures in generalized hybrid metric-Palatini gravity

In this work, we study 5-dimensional braneworld scenarios in the scalar-tensor representation of the generalized hybrid metric-Palatini gravitational theory. We start by considering a model for a brane supported purely by the gravitational scalar fields of the theory and then consider other distinct cases where the models are also supported by an additional matter scalar field. We investigate the stability of the gravity sector and show that the models are all robust against small fluctuations of the metric. In particular, in the presence of the additional scalar field, we find that the profile of the gravitational zero mode may be controlled by the parameters of the model, being also capable of developing internal structure.

Existence and stability of relativistic fluid spheres supported by thin shells

We propose two models for constant density relativistic perfect-fluid spheres supported by thin shell configurations. These models are obtained from the Schwarzschild constant density star solution: the first via the collapse of the external layers of the fluid into a thin shell by performing a matching with the exterior Schwarzschild solution at a matching radius smaller than the star radius; and the second via the creation of a vacuum bubble inside the star by matching it with an interior Minkowski spacetime. Both models are shown to satisfy both the weak and the strong energy conditions (WEC and SEC) and can have a compactness arbitrarily close to that of a black-hole without developing singularities at the center, thus being exceptions to the Buchdahl limit. We compute the stability regimes of the models proposed and we show that there are combinations of the star radius $R$ and the matching radius $R_Σ$ for which the solutions are stable, the dominant energy condition (DEC) is satisfied, and the radius of the object is smaller than $3M$, implying that these models could be used as models for dark matter or exotic compact objects.

Stability of Kerr black holes in generalized hybrid metric-Palatini gravity

It is shown that the Kerr solution exists in the generalized hybrid metric-Palatini gravity theory and that for certain choices of the function $f(R,\mathcal R)$ that characterizes the theory, the Kerr solution can be stable against perturbations on the scalar degree of freedom of the theory. We start by verifying which are the most general conditions on the function $f(R,\mathcal R)$ that allow for the general relativistic Kerr solution to also be a solution of this theory. We perform a scalar perturbation in the trace of the metric tensor, which in turn imposes a perturbation in both the Ricci and Palatini scalar curvatures. To first order in the perturbation, the equations of motion, namely the field equations and the equation that relates the Ricci and the Palatini curvature scalars, can be rewritten in terms of a fourth-order wave equation for the perturbation $δR$ which can be factorized into two second-order massive wave equations for the same variable. The usual ansatz and separation methods are applied and stability bounds on the effective mass of the Ricci scalar perturbation are obtained. These stability regimes are studied case by case and specific forms of the function $f(R,\mathcal R)$ that allow for a stable Kerr solution to exist within the perturbation regime studied are obtained.
