Phase-space structure of cosmological thermogravity

An emergent gravity model was shown to contain an associated emergent breaking of Lorentz invariance and violations of stress-energy conservation. Its simplest flat dust solution accelerates at late times without vacuum energy and has already been used as an analytic benchmark for observational tests. We study the wider homogeneous dynamics and solutions of this theory. For a single non-conserved dust fluid, the variables $Ω_m=ρ/(3H^2)$ and $u=(HL_2)^{-1}$ form a two-dimensional autonomous system with an exact first integral. The complete expanding solution space separates into three classes: trajectories ending on an asymptotically de Sitter fixed line, a critical trajectory corresponding to the analytic solution of Isichei and Magueijo, and trajectories that turn around and recollapse. We then consider the phenomenologically cleaner model in which only cold dark matter violates energy conservation (while the baryons and photons behave as normal). The phase space becomes three-dimensional, with a line of matter repellers and a line of vacuum fixed points. Each normally attracting vacuum point with $0<u_0<3$ possesses a two-dimensional stable sheet. The limit in which the CDM abundance tends to zero is singular: finite-$u_0$ sheets meet the exactly baryonic plane on trajectories containing a cosmological-constant-like integration constant, whereas the zero-integration-constant baryonic solution remains at $Ω_b=1$ and runs to $u\to\infty$. The critical endpoint $u_0=3$ separates these late-time behaviours and generalizes the special single-fluid solution.

Testing cosmic acceleration from thermogravity without vacuum energy

We present a first background-level observational test of a thermogravity theory in which the Einstein equations are clipped to a trace-free version, the cosmological constant $Λ$ does not gravitate, and controlled violations of energy conservation obstruct the usual reinstatement of $Λ$ as an integration constant. We therefore set $Λ=0$ and ask whether late-time acceleration can instead be generated solely by energy non-conservation, with no extra background parameter relative to flat $Λ\mathrm{CDM}$. We contrast a minimal universal implementation with a model in which only CDM partakes in non-conservation. The universal model is strongly disfavored when combining Supernovae and BAO distances, with the inclusion of DESI BAO worsening the fit by $Δχ^2\simeq 51$ relative to $Λ\mathrm{CDM}$, because matter creation ties the intermediate-redshift normalization of $H(z)$ too rigidly to the present acceleration. This conclusion, however, should be interpreted with caution, since universal non-conservation would modify the observational dictionary itself. By contrast, restricting non-conservation to CDM leaves baryonic and photon observables unaffected at the background level and therefore allows a self-contained analysis. The resulting $ξ\mathrm{CDM}$ model, which can be thought of as a one parameter extension of $Λ\mathrm{CDM}$, provides an improved fit relative to $Λ\mathrm{CDM}$ for the background dataset combinations considered, with improvements reaching $Δχ^2=-4.85$ and a maximum Bayesian preference of $\ln\mathcal{B}=2.77$. However, when the BAO ruler is calibrated using BBN or CMB information, the reduced effective early-time CDM density increases the sound horizon and drives $H_0$ towards lower values, thereby increasing rather than alleviating the tension with the distance-ladder calibration.

Modified Friedmann equations and non-singular cosmologies in $d=4$ non-polynomial quasi-topological gravities

Quasi-topological theories of gravity are known to resolve black-hole singularities. We investigate whether the same mechanism can remove cosmological singularities. Focusing on non-polynomial curvature quasi-topological gravities in $d=4$ dimensions, we find three generic scenarios with the correct infrared limit but without a Big-Bang singularity, for universes filled with pure radiation or other standard matter. The first scenario yields a universe emerging from a de Sitter phase, a case for which the curvature invariants remain finite but the matter density diverges, albeit only at infinite affine distance. The second one corresponds to a bouncing universe, which requires a multi-valued Lagrangian. The third possibility is an asymptotically Minkowski origin, reminiscent of an eternally loitering universe. The matter energy density for this solution is non-singular even at infinite affine distance and does not enter a super-Planckian regime, but is instead approximately constant for the past eternity.

Bimodular Gravity: Vacuum Evolution with a Frame-Dependent Phantom Crossing

Unimodular gravity recasts the cosmological constant as an integration constant, fixed by a constraint on the volume element rather than chosen in the action. We ask what becomes of this constant when matter couples not to the gravitational metric, but to a second metric disformally related to it through a scalar field. Imposing a volume constraint on each metric, we find a theory in which the scalar does not propagate, yet still drives a non-trivial expansion. Written as a single-metric theory, its kinetic term is fixed to a prescribed function of spacetime, and the cosmological constant is replaced by a vacuum contribution that need not be constant. Moreover, we find that this theory admits a phantom crossing through a purely frame-dependent mechanism. This construction, however, rests on a feature invisible with a single metric, and unimodular formalisms that are classically equivalent in that case cease to agree once there are two disformally related metrics.

Teleocosmology and quantum post-selection

Although cosmic acceleration is well established, its physical origin remains contentious. Most explanations invoke either a non-zero vacuum energy, i.e. a cosmological constant, or new fields. We propose instead a mechanism arising purely from quantum mechanics, without additional constants or local sources. The key point is that quantum theory permits both initial and final boundary conditions on a state, here the wave function of the universe. Pre- and post-selected systems are familiar in laboratory quantum mechanics; we extend the idea to minisuperspace quantum cosmology. As a warm-up, we show that a free non-relativistic particle, initially in a semiclassical wave packet and conditioned on a final quantum state, can have an intermediate peak which accelerates even though the Hamiltonian is free. A semiclassical observer would infer a contrived classical force. We then implement the analogous construction in quantum cosmology using connection variables and unimodular time. A forward semiclassical packet, taken for simplicity to describe pure radiation, is post-selected by a normalizable Chern-Simons soliton. The resulting two-boundary amplitude has a peak which leaves the radiation trajectory and enters an accelerating regime, while the forward Hamiltonian has $Λ=0$. A classical model can mimic this trajectory only by introducing a contrived effective component: near the transition it resembles $w\simeq -1$, but when extrapolated it evolves towards strongly phantom behaviour, $w<-1$. The acceleration is therefore more naturally interpreted as a quantum boundary-condition effect than as a local classical source. We also discuss why the Chern-Simons soliton is a clean final state, the small overlap between initial and final states, and possible tell-tale signatures.

Quantum dynamics and thermodynamics of a Minkowski-Minkowski wormhole

We consider the path-integral quantization of a minisuperspace cut-and-paste Lorentzian wormhole connecting two Minkowski spacetimes. The dynamics of the throat radius as a function of proper time is governed by a non-polynomial effective action derived by an application of the Israel junction condition formalism. Within a saddle-point approximation of the propagator describing the evolution from an initial to a final throat radius, we show that topology-changing transitions are suppressed by the Hessian determinant. In addition, we analyze the gravitational thermodynamics of the wormhole spacetime by a Wick rotation of the Israel-Lanczos equations in the presence of a thin-shell source. The resulting Euclideanized field equations are assumed to originate from a Euclidean effective gravity-matter action, which enters the path-integral representation of the gravitational canonical partition function. Therefrom we associate a temperature given by the inverse period of solutions, as well as a gravitational entropy as functions of the surface energy density and equation of state parameter of the shell. Both quantities are sourced entirely by the discontinuity of the extrinsic curvature across the junction. We show how this result can be applied to deduce a thermodynamic first law as the differential version of the conservation equation relating the effective mass of the shell to its surface pressure.

Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking in Graviweak Theory

Graviweak theory seeks to unify gravity (specifically in its self-dual formulation) with the weak interaction, preying on their parallel chiral $SU(2)$ structures. In this paper we further this idea by folding it with the concept of spontaneous symmetry breaking. We do this first with a standard Higgs field and potential, starting with a unifying parity-invariant theory which splits into the usual gravity and weak sector under spontaneous symmetry breaking. By rewriting the theory in the two-spin framework we are then prompted to discuss generalizations, within the generic approach known as MacDowell-Mansouri theories where a larger internal gauge group is broken. One of the predictions of the ensuing construction is a non-minimal coupling in the low energy broken phase between curvature and the weak gauge fields, translating at the quantum level to a direct channel between the graviton and the weak bosons.

GraviGUT unification with revisited Pati-Salam model

We propose a graviGUT unification scheme based on the simple orthogonal group $\mathrm{SO}(1,9 ,\mathbb{C})$ that resolves the chiral duplication of weak isospin in Pati--Salam models. In the conventional $SU(4)\times SU(2)_+\times SU(2)_-$ framework, the unobserved second chiral $SU(2)$ is typically removed by ad hoc high-energy scale breaking. Here we instead \emph{geometrize} it: one $SU(2)$ factor is identified with a chiral half of the Lorentz group, so it belongs to gravity rather than to an additional weak force. This identification becomes natural inside $\mathrm{SO}(1,9 ,\mathbb{C})$, where the algebra decomposes as $\mathfrak{so}(1,3)_{\mathbb{C}}\oplus\mathfrak{so}(6)_{\mathbb{C}}\oplus(\text{coset})$. We construct a parity-symmetric chiral action that, upon breaking \emph{dynamically} selects one chirality: the surviving Yang--Mills factor is identified with $SU(2)_+$, while the opposite chirality persists as the gravitational chiral connection. These lead to concrete phenomenological handles, including graviton and weak-boson vertices with the other fundamental forces in $SU(3)$ and $U(1)$ and parity-sensitive gravitational-wave signatures, that distinguish the $\mathrm{SO}(1,9,\mathbb{C})$ construction from both traditional Pati--Salam and larger, less economical unifications.

Thermodynamics in space-times without horizons

We consider the energetics and thermodynamics of spacetimes with no horizons, but endowed with a preferred timelike junction surface. They could arise as a limiting case of the gravastar and other constructions regularizing the interior of the horizon of a black hole, or from the conceptual cutting of a portion of a non-asymptotically flat space and gluing it with flat space. We find that such surfaces can be made to have zero energy, so that the energetics of such spaces is not encumbered by them. They do have a transverse pressure, fixed by the jump in surface gravity. A peculiar matter thermodynamics then follows, with well defined entropy, temperature and surface pressure, constrained by specific relations arising from the zero energy condition. This is confirmed by the Euclidean path integral, with the proviso that the Tolman-Ehrenfest temperature should be used. The entropy of the space is then the area of the timelike surface in units of a fundamental area, and the matter temperature is proportional to the transverse pressure and so the jump in surface gravity. However, when the gravitational action is added, the free energy of the surface is also zero. The fact that for some such spaces the temperature comes out negative raises interesting questions regarding the third law of thermodynamics.

Quantum wormholes at spatial infinity

We derive the interesting result that the two asymptotically flat Universes classically linked by the Einstein-Rosen bridge may also be quantum mechanically connected in their far out regions. This would be felt by the Newtonian potential far away from a black/white hole system, and raises the possibility of establishing communication via perturbations. We obtain our results by means of wavepackets with a small variance in the mass, solving the equations derived from a maximally symmetry-reduced canonical quantisation method. Mass and a proxy of the Newtonian potential appear as canonical duals, leading to a Heisenberg uncertainty relation between the two. Coherent states are then built, which become non-semiclassical only in two regions: asymptotic spatial infinity (where unitarity forces the packets to ''feel'' the other asymptotic spatial infinity), and inside the horizon at $r=Gm$ where there is ringing. Whilst the latter has been noted in the literature, the former -- the quantum wormhole -- seems to have eluded past scrutiny. Further studies are required to examine the stability of these conclusions beyond their symmetry-reduced test tube.

Vortices, topology and time

We relate physical time with the topology of magnetic field vortices. We base ourselves on a formulation of unimodular gravity where the cosmological constant $Λ$ appears as the canonical dual to a variable which on-shell becomes four-volume time. If the theory is restricted to a topological axionic form (viz. a parity-odd product of an electric and a magnetic field), such a time variable becomes the spatial integral of the Chern-Simons density. The latter equates to helicity, so that unimodular time is transmuted into the linking number of the vortices of the topological magnetic field, times their flux. With the added {\it postulate} that this flux is a universal constant, the flow of time can thus be interpreted as the progressive weaving of further links between magnetic field vortices, each link providing a quantum of time with value related to the fixed flux. Non-abelian extensions, and targetting parameters other than $Λ$ are briefly examined, exposing different types of vortices and a possible role for inter-linking leading to new phenomenology.

Unimodular Proca Theory: Breaking the U(1) gauge symmetry of unimodular gravity via a mass term

We study the Hamiltonian structure of unimodular-like theories, where the cosmological constant (or other supposed constants of nature) are demoted from fixed parameters to classical constants of motion. No new local degrees of freedom are present as a result of a $U(1)$ gauge invariance of the theory. Hamiltonian analysis of the action reveals that the only possible gauge fixing that can be enforced is setting the spatial components of the four-volume time vector ${\cal T}^{i}\approx0$. As a consequence of this, the gauge-fixed unimodular path integral is equivalent to the minisuperspace unimodular path integral. However, should we break the $U(1)$ gauge invariance, two things happen: a massless propagating degree of freedom appears, and the (gauge-invariant) zero-mode receives modified dynamics. The implications are investigated, with the phenomenology depending crucially on the target ``constant''.

Overall signature of the metric and the cosmological constant

We consider a little known aspect of signature change, where the overall sign of the metric is allowed to change, with physical implications. We show how, in different formulations of general relativity, this type of classical signature change across boundaries with a degenerate metric can be made consistent with a change in sign (and value) of the cosmological constant $Λ$. In particular, the separate "mostly plus" and "mostly minus" signature sectors of Lorentzian gravity are most naturally associated with different signs of $Λ$. We show how this general phenomenon allows for classical solutions where the open dS patch can arise from a portion of AdS space time. These can be interpreted as classical "imaginary space" extensions of the usual Lorentzian theory, with $a^2<0$.

Unitary and Vilenkin's wave functions

It is remarkably difficult to reconcile unitary and Vilenkin's wave function. For example, the natural conserved inner product found in quantum unimodular gravity applies to the Hartle-Hawking wave function, but fails for its Vilenkin counterpart. We diagnose this failure from different angles (Laplace transform instead of Fourier transform, non-Hermiticity of the Hamiltonian, etc) to conclude that ultimately it stems from allowing the connection to become imaginary in a section of its contour. In turn this is the unavoidable consequence of representing the Euclidean theory as an imaginary image within a fundamentally Lorentzian theory. It is nonetheless possible to change the underlying theory and replace the connection's foray into the imaginary axis by an actual signature change (with the connection, action and Hamiltonian remaining real). The structural obstacles to unitarity are then removed, but special care must still be taken, because the Euclidean theory {\it a priori} has boundaries, so that appropriate boundary conditions are required for unitarity. Reflecting boundary conditions would reinstate a Hartle-Hawking-like solution in the Lorentzian regime. To exclude an incoming wave in the Lorentzian domain one must allow a semi-infinite tower of spheres in the Euclidean region, wave packets travelling through successive spheres for half an eternity in unimodular time. Such "Sisyphus" boundary condition no longer even vaguely resembles Vilenkin's original proposal.

Quantum resolution of the cosmological singularity without new physics

We study a quantum Hot Big Bang in the connection representation, with a matter constant of motion m whose conjugate defines time. Superpositions in m induce a unitary inner product. The wavefunction reveals a resolution of the singularity problem without new physics or supplementary boundary conditions. Backtracking in time, the probability peak eventually halts at a maximum curvature, its height dropping thereafter while a symmetric contracting peak rises. The Big Bang is replaced by a superposition of contracting and expanding regular Universes. We contrast these findings with the situation in the metric representation, where boundary conditions at the singularity are needed for unitary evolution.

Unimodular Hartle-Hawking wave packets and their probability interpretation

We re-examine the Hartle-Hawking wave function from the point of view of a quantum theory which starts from the connection representation and allows for off-shell non-constancy of $Λ$ (as in unimodular theory), with a concomitant dual relational time variable. By translating its structures to the metric representation we find a non-trivial inner product rendering wave packets of Hartle-Hawking waves normalizable and the time evolution unitary; however, the implied probability measure differs significantly from the naive $|ψ|^2$. In contrast with the (monochromatic) Hartle-Hawking wave function, these packets form travelling waves with a probability peak describing de Sitter space, except near the bounce, where the incident and reflected waves interfere, transiently recreating the usual standing wave. Away from the bounce the packets get sharper both in metric and connection space, an apparent contradiction with Heisenberg's principle allowed by the fact that the metric is not Hermitian, even though its eigenvalues are real. Near the bounce, the evanescent wave not only penetrates into the classically forbidden region but also extends into the $a^2<0$ Euclidean domain. We work out the propagators for this theory and relate them to the standard ones. The $a=0$ point (aka the "nothing") is unremarkable, and in any case a wave function peaked therein is typically non-normalizable and/or implies a nonsensical probability for $Λ$ (which the Universe would preserve forever). Within this theory it makes more sense to adopt a Gaussian state in an appropriate function of $Λ$, and use the probability associated with the evanescent wave present near the time of the bounce as a measure of the likelihood of creation of a pair of time-symmetric semiclassical Universes.

Quantum Gravity Signatures in the Late-Universe

We calculate deviations in cosmological observables as a function of parameters in a class of connection-based models of quantum gravity. In this theory non-trivial modifications to the background cosmology can occur due to a distortion of the wave function of the Universe at the transition from matter to dark energy domination (which acts as a "reflection" in connection space). We are able to exclude some regions of parameter space and show with projected constraints that future experiments like DESI will be able to further constrain these models. An interesting feature of this theory is that there exists a region of parameter space that could naturally alleviate the $S_8$ tension.

Minisuperspace Quantum Cosmology from the Einstein-Cartan Path Integral

We derive the fixed-$Λ$ and unimodular propagators using the path integral formalism as applied to the Einstein-Cartan action. The simplicity of the action (which is linear in the lapse function) allows for an exact integration starting from the lapse function and the enforcement of the Hamiltonian constraint, leading to a product of Chern-Simons states if the connection is fixed at the endpoints. No saddle point approximation is needed. Should the metric be fixed at the endpoints, then, depending on the contour chosen for the connection, Hartle-Hawking or Vilenkin propagators are obtained. Thus, in this approach one trades a choice of contour in the lapse function for one in the connection, where appropriate. The unimodular propagators are also trivial to obtain via the path integral, and the previously derived expressions are recovered.
