Rendering Coherent Scattering via Quantum Collision Models

Traditional light rendering techniques treat the optical properties of materials as static, yet this assumption breaks down in cases where these properties dynamically evolve in response to incident illumination. We present a novel shading framework that combines classical ray-tracing with a quantum collision model to explore the effect of coherent light-matter interactions in rendering. By treating incident light and material excitations as quantized modes, we model sub-surface scattering as a sequence of symmetry-constrained unitary collisions. This formulation allows for the incorporation of non-integrable dynamics and chaotic optical responses due to multi-layer interference effects. We demonstrate how these collision operators can be pre-computed using near-term quantum computers to generate standard BSDFs, enabling the rendering of new physics-inspired materials with distinct optical signatures.

Quantum Brush: A quantum computing-based tool for digital painting

We present Quantum Brush, an open-source digital painting tool that harnesses quantum computing to generate novel artistic expressions. The tool includes four different brushes that translate strokes into unique quantum algorithms, each highlighting a different way in which quantum effects can produce novel aesthetics. Each brush is designed to be compatible with the current noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) devices, as demonstrated by executing them on IQM's Sirius device.

Level Generation with Quantum Reservoir Computing

Reservoir computing is a form of machine learning particularly suited for time series analysis, including forecasting predictions. We take an implementation of \emph{quantum} reservoir computing that was initially designed to generate variants of musical scores and adapt it to create levels of Super Mario Bros. Motivated by our analysis of these levels, we develop a new Roblox \textit{obby} where the courses can be generated in real time on superconducting qubit hardware, and investigate some of the constraints placed by such real-time generation.

Exact description of quantum stochastic models as quantum resistors

We study the transport properties of generic out-of-equilibrium quantum systems connected to fermionic reservoirs. We develop a new method, based on an expansion of the current in terms of the inverse system size and out of equilibrium formulations such as the Keldysh technique and the Meir-Wingreen formula. Our method allows a simple and compact derivation of the current for a large class of systems showing diffusive/ohmic behavior. In addition, we obtain exact solutions for a large class of quantum stochastic Hamiltonians (QSHs) with time and space dependent noise, using a self consistent Born diagrammatic method in the Keldysh representation. We show that these QSHs exhibit diffusive regimes which are encoded in the Keldysh component of the single particle Green's function. The exact solution for these QSHs models confirms the validity of our system size expansion ansatz, and its efficiency in capturing the transport properties. We consider in particular three fermionic models: i) a model with local dephasing ii) the quantum simple symmetric exclusion process model iii) a model with long-range stochastic hopping. For i) and ii) we compute the full temperature and dephasing dependence of the conductance of the system, both for two- and four-points measurements. Our solution gives access to the regime of finite temperature of the reservoirs which could not be obtained by previous approaches. For iii), we unveil a novel ballistic-to-diffusive transition governed by the range and the nature (quantum or classical) of the hopping. As a by-product, our approach equally describes the mean behavior of quantum systems under continuous measurement.

Ballistic-to-diffusive transition in spin chains with broken integrability

We study the ballistic-to-diffusive transition induced by the weak breaking of integrability in a boundary-driven XXZ spin-chain. Studying the evolution of the spin current density $\mathcal J^s$ as a function of the system size $L$, we show that, accounting for boundary effects, the transition has a non-trivial universal behavior close to the XX limit. It is controlled by the scattering length $L^*\propto V^{-2}$, where $V$ is the strength of the integrability breaking term. In the XXZ model, the interplay of interactions controls the emergence of a transient "quasi-ballistic" regime at length scales much shorter than $L^*$. This parametrically large regime is characterized by a strong renormalization of the current which forbids a universal scaling, unlike the XX model. Our results are based on Matrix Product Operator numerical simulations and agree with perturbative analytical calculations.
