Neutron stars with Bogoliubov quark-meson coupling model

A quark-meson coupling model based on the quark model proposed by Bogoliubov for the description of the quark dynamics is developed and applied to the description of neutron stars. Starting from a su(3) symmetry approach, it is shown that this symmetry has to be broken in order to satisfy the constraints set by the hypernuclei and by neutron stars. The model is able to describe observations such as two solar mass stars or the radius of canonical neutron stars within the uncertainties presently accepted. If the optical potentials for $Λ$ and $Ξ$ hyperons in symmetric nuclear matter at saturation obtained from laboratory measurements of hypernuclei properties are imposed the model predicts no strangeness inside neutron stars.

A quantum system with a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian

The relevance in Physics of non-Hermitian operators with real eigenvalues is being widely recognized not only in quantum mechanics but also in other areas, such as quantum optics, quantum fluid dynamics and quantum field theory. %stochastic processesand so on. In this note, a quantum system described by a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian, which is constituted by two types of interacting bosons, is investigated. The real eigenvalues of the Hamiltonian are explicitly determined, as well as complete biorthogonal sets of eigenfunctions of the Hamiltonian and its adjoint. The diagonal representation of $H$ is obtained using pseudo-bosonic operators.

Fermionic model with a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian

This paper deals with the mathematical spectral analysis and physical interpretation of a fermionic system described by a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian possessing real eigenvalues. A statistical thermodynamical description of such a system is considered. Approximate expressions for the energy expectation value and the number operator expectation value, in terms of the absolute temperature $T$ and of the chemical potential $μ$, are obtained, based on the Euler-Maclaurin formula.

Binding of muonated hydrogen molecules on the occasionof the Born-Oppenheimer approximation 90th anniversary

The stability of four fermionic particles with unit charge, of which, two are positively, and two negatively charged, is discussed. Except for using the simplest approximation of a single Gaussian orbital per particle, the problem is exactly solved variationally and, by varying the masses to simulate molecular di-hydrogen, mono-muonated di-hydrogen and di-muonated di-hydrogen, employed to illustrate the celebrated Born-Oppenheimer approximation on the occasion of its 90th anniversary. It is suggested that it is valid only for di-hydrogen.

Towards non-Hermitian quantum statistical thermodynamics

Non-Hermitian Hamiltonians possessing a discrete real spectrum motivated a remarkable research activity in quantum physics and new insights have emerged. In this paper we formulate concepts of statistical thermodynamics for systems described by non-Hermitian Hamiltonians with real eigenvalues. We mainly focus on the case where the energy and another observable are the conserved quantities. The notion of entropy and entropy inequalities are central in our approach, which treats equilibrium thermodynamics.

Inequalities in Rényi's quantum thermodynamics

A theory of thermodynamics has been recently formulated and derived on the basis of Rényi entropy and its relative versions. In this framework, we define the concepts of partition function, internal energy and free energy, and fundamental quantum thermodynamical inequalities are deduced. In the context of Rényi's thermodynamics, the variational Helmholtz principle is stated and the condition of equilibrium is analyzed. The Rényi maximum entropy principle is formulated and the equality case is discussed. The obtained results reduce to the von Neumann ones when the Rényi entropic parameter $α$ approaches 1. The Heisenberg and Schrödinger uncertainty principles on the measurements of quantum observables are revisited. The presentation is self-contained and the proofs only use standard matrix analysis techniques.

BCS theory of hadronic matter at high densities

The equilibrium between the so-called 2SC and CFL phases of strange quark matter at high densities is investigated in the framework of a simple schematic model of the NJL type. Equal densities are assumed for quarks $u,d$ and $s$. The 2SC phase is here described by a color-flavor symmetric state, in which the quark numbers are independent of the color-flavor combination. In the CFL phase the quark numbers depend on the color-flavor combination, that is, the number of quarks associated with the color-flavor combinations $ur,dg,sb$ is different from the number of quarks associated with the color flavor combinations $ug,ub,dr,db,sr,sg$. We find that the 2SC phase is stable for a chemical potential $μ$ below $μ_c=0.505$ GeV, while the CFL phase is stable above, the equilibrium pressure being $P_c=0.003$ GeV$^4$. We have used a 3-momentum regularizing cutoff $Λ=0.8$ GeV, which is somewhat larger than is usual in NJL type models. This should be adequate if the relevant chemical potential does not exceed 0.6 GeV.

Color symmetrical superconductivity in a schematic nuclear quark model

In this note, a novel BCS-type formalism is constructed in the framework of a schematic QCD inspired quark model, having in mind the description of color symmetrical superconducting states. The physical properties of the BCS vacuum (average numbers of quarks of different colors) remain unchanged under an arbitrary color rotation. In the usual approach to color superconductivity, the pairing correlations affect only the quasi-particle states of two colors, the single particle states of the third color remaining unaffected by the pairing correlations. In the theory of color symmetrical superconductivity here proposed, the pairing correlations affect symmetrically the quasi-particle states of the three colors and vanishing net color-charge is automatically insured. It is found that the groundstate energy of the color symmetrical sector of the Bonn model is well approximated by the average energy of the color symmetrical superconducting state proposed here.

Non Hermitian Operators with Real Spectrum in Quantum Mechanics

Examples are given of non-Hermitian Hamiltonian operators which have a real spectrum. Some of the investigated operators are expressed in terms of the generators of the Weil-Heisenberg algebra. It is argued that the existence of an involutive operator $\hat J$ which renders the Hamiltonian $\hat J$-Hermitian leads to the unambiguous definition of an associated positive definite norm allowing for the standard probabilistic interpretation of quantum mechanics. Non-Hermitian extensions of the Poeschl-Teller Hamiltonian are also considered. Hermitian counterparts obtained by similarity transformations are constructed.

Color symmetric superconductivity in a phenomenological QCD model

In this paper, we construct a theory of the NJL-type where superconductivity is present, and yet the super-conducting state remains, in the average, color symmetric. This shows that the present approach to color superconductivity is consistent with color singlet-ness. Indeed, quarks are free in the deconfined phase, but the deconfined phase itself is believed to be a color singlet. The usual description of the color superconducting state violates color singlet-ness. On the other hand, the color superconducting state here proposed, is color symmetric in the sense that an arbitrary color rotation leads to an equivalent state, with precisely the same physical properties.

The Bonn nuclear quark model revisited

We present the exact solutions to the equations of the lowest energy states of the colored and color-symmetric sectors of the Bonn quark model, which is SU(3) symmetric and is defined in terms of an effective pairing force with $su(4)$ algebraic structure. We show that the groundstate of the model is not color symmetrical except for a narrow interval in the range of possible quark numbers. We also study the performance of the Glauber coherent state, as well as of superconducting states of the BCS type, with respect to the description, not only of the absolute (colored) groundstate, but also of the minimum energy state of the color-symmetrical sector, finding that it is remarkably good. We use the model to discuss, in a schematic context, some controversial aspects of the conventional treatment of color superconductivity.

Short range correlations in relativistic nuclear matter models

Short range correlations are introduced using unitary correlation method in a relativistic approach to the equation of state of the infinite nuclear matter in the framework of the Hartree-Fock approximation. It is shown that the correlations give rise to an extra node in the ground-state wave-function in the nucleons, contrary to what happens in non-relativistic calculations with a hard core. The effect of the correlations in the ground state properties of the nuclear matter and neutron matter is studied. The nucleon effective mass and equation of state (EOS) are very sensitive to short range correlations. In particular, if the pion contact term is neglected a softening of the EOS is predicted. Correlations have also an important effect on the neutron matter EOS which presents no binding but only a very shallow minimum contrary to the Walecka model.
