Semiclassical wave packet tunneling in real-time

Quantum mechanical real-time tunneling through general scattering potentials is studied in the semiclassical limit. It is shown that the exact path integral of the real-time propagator is dominated in the long time sector by quasi-stationary fluctuations associated with caustics. This leads to an extended semiclassical propagation scheme for wave packet dynamics which accurately describes deep tunneling through static and, for the first time, driven barrier potentials.

The partition function of an interacting many body system: beyond the perturbed static path approximation

Based on the path integral representation of the partition function of a many body system with separable two body interaction we propose a systematic extension of the perturbed static path approximation (PSPA) to lower temperatures. Thereby, special attention must be paid to instabilities of the classical mean field solution in functional space that cause divergencies within the conventional PSPA. As a result we develop an approximation applicable from high to very low temperatures. These findings are tested against exact results for the archetypical cases of a particle moving in a one dimensional double well and the exactly solvable Lipkin model. In particular, we obtain a very good approximation to the level density of the Lipkin model even at low thermal excitations. Our results may have potential applications in low temperature nuclear physics and mesoscopic systems, e.g. for gap fluctuations in nanoscale superconducting devices previously studied within a PSPA type of approximation. Quantum decay rates for driven barrier potentials in the strong friction limit

Quantum decay rates for barrier potentials driven by external stochastic and periodic forces in the strong damping regime are studied. Based on the recently derived quantum Smoluchowski equation [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 87}, 086802 (2001)] explicit analytical and numerical results are presented for the case of the resonant activation phenomenon in a bistable potential and the escape from a metastablwell with oscillating barrier, respectively. The significant impact of quantum fluctuations is revealed.

Strong friction limit in quantum mechanics: the Quantum Smoluchowski equation

For a quantum system coupled to a heat bath environment the strong friction limit is studied starting from the exact path integral formulation. Generalizing the classical Smoluchowski limit to low temperatures a time evolution equation for the position distribution is derived and the strong role of quantum fluctuations in this limit is revealed.

Semiclassical time evolution of the density matrix and tunneling

The time dependent density matrix of a system with potential barrier is studied using path integrals. The characterization of the initial state, which is assumed to be restricted to one side of the barrier, and the time evolution of the density matrix lead to a three-fold path integral which is evaluated in the semiclassical limit. The semiclassical trajectories are found to move in the complex coordinate plane and barrier penetration only arises due to fluctuations. Both the form of the semiclassical paths and the relevant fluctuations change significantly as a function of temperature. The semiclassical analysis leads to a detailed picture of barrier penetration in the real time domain and the changeover from thermal activation to quantum tunneling. Deep tunneling is associated with quasi-zero modes in the fluctuation spectrum about the semiclassical orbits in the long time limit. The connection between this real time description of tunneling and the standard imaginary time instanton approach is established. Specific results are given for a double well potential and an Eckart barrier.

Exact and Semiclassical Density Matrix of a Particle Moving in a Barrier Potential with Bound States

We present a barrier potential with bound states that is exactly solvable and determine the eigenfunctions and eigenvalues of the Hamiltonian. The equilibrium density matrix of a particle moving at temperature T in this nonlinear barrier potential field is determined. The exact density matrix is compared with the result of the path integral approach in the semiclassical approximation. For opaque barriers the simple semiclassical approximation is found to be sufficient at high temperatures while at low temperatures the fluctuation paths may have a caustic depending on temperature and endpoints. Near the caustics the divergence of the simple semiclassical approximation of the density matrix is removed by a nonlinear fluctuation potential. For opaque barriers the improved semiclassical approximation is again in agreement with the exact result. In particular, bound states and the form of resonance states are described accurately by the semiclassical approach.

Quantum Effects in Barrier Dynamics

The dynamics near the top of a potential barrier is studied in the temperature region where quantum effects become important. The time evolution of the density matrix of a system that deviates initially from equilibrium in the vicinity of the barrier top but is in local equilibrium away from the barrier top is determined. Explicit results are given for a range of parameters where the nonequilibrium state is not affected by anharmonicities of the barrier potential except for the barrier height. In particular, for a system confined initially to one side of the barrier the relaxation to a quasi--stationary flux state is determined. The associated rate constant is evaluated and the relation to other rate formulas is discussed in detail.

Dissipative Quantum Systems with Potential Barrier. General Theory and Parabolic Barrier

We study the real time dynamics of a quantum system with potential barrier coupled to a heat-bath environment. Employing the path integral approach an evolution equation for the time dependent density matrix is derived. The time evolution is evaluated explicitly near the barrier top in the temperature region where quantum effects become important. It is shown that there exists a quasi-stationary state with a constant flux across the potential barrier. This state generalizes the Kramers flux solution of the classical Fokker-Planck equation to the quantum regime. In the temperature range explored the quantum flux state depends only on the parabolic approximation of the anharmonic barrier potential near the top. The parameter range within which the solution is valid is investigated in detail. In particular, by matching the flux state onto the equilibrium state on one side of the barrier we gain a condition on the minimal damping strength. For very high temperatures this condition reduces to a known result from classical rate theory. Within the specified parameter range the decay rate out of a metastable state is calculated from the flux solution. The rate is shown to coincide with the result of purely thermodynamic methods. The real time approach presented can be extended to lower temperatures and smaller damping.
