Kibble-Zurek scaling and its breakdown for spontaneous generation of Josephson vortices in Bose-Einstein condensates

Atomic Bose-Einstein condensates confined to a dual-ring trap support Josephson vortices as topologically stable defects in the relative phase. We propose a test of the scaling laws for defect formation by quenching a Bose gas to degeneracy in this geometry. Stochastic Gross-Pitaevskii simulations reveal a -1/4 power-law scaling of defect number with quench time for fast quenches, consistent with the Kibble-Zurek mechanism. Slow quenches show stronger quench-time dependence that is explained by the stability properties of Josephson vortices, revealing the boundary of the Kibble-Zurek regime. Interference of the two atomic fields enables clear long-time measurement of stable defects, and a direct test of the Kibble-Zurek mechanism in Bose-Einstein condensation.

Nucleation in finite topological systems during continuous metastable quantum phase transitions

Finite topological quantum systems can undergo continuous metastable quantum phase transitions to change their topological nature. Here we show how to nucleate the transition between ring currents and dark soliton states in a toroidally trapped Bose-Einstein condensate. An adiabatic passage to wind and unwind its phase is achieved by explicit global breaking of the rotational symmetry. This could be realized with current experimental technology.

Theory of superfluidity and drag force in the one-dimensional Bose gas

The one-dimensional Bose gas is an unusual superfluid. In contrast to higher spatial dimensions, the existence of non-classical rotational inertia is not directly linked to the dissipationless motion of infinitesimal impurities. Recently, experimental tests with ultracold atoms have begun and quantitative predictions for the drag force experienced by moving obstacles have become available. This topical review discusses the drag force obtained from linear response theory in relation to Landau's criterion of superfluidity. Based upon improved analytical and numerical understanding of the dynamical structure factor, results for different obstacle potentials are obtained, including single impurities, optical lattices and random potentials generated from speckle patterns. The dynamical breakdown of superfluidity in random potentials is discussed in relation to Anderson localization and the predicted superfluid-insulator transition in these systems.

Engineering mesoscopic superpositions of superfluid flow

Modeling strongly correlated atoms demonstrates the possibility to prepare quantum superpositions that are robust against experimental imperfections and temperature. Such superpositions of vortex states are formed by adiabatic manipulation of interacting ultracold atoms confined to a one-dimensional ring trapping potential when stirred by a barrier. Here, we discuss the influence of non-ideal experimental procedures and finite temperature. Adiabaticity conditions for changing the stirring rate reveal that superpositions of many atoms are most easily accessed in the strongly-interacting, Tonks-Girardeau, regime, which is also the most robust at finite temperature. NOON-type superpositions of weakly interacting atoms are most easily created by adiabatically decreasing the interaction strength by means of a Feshbach resonance. The quantum dynamics of small numbers of particles is simulated and the size of the superpositions is calculated based on their ability to make precision measurements. Experimental creation of strongly correlated and NOON-type superpositions with about 100 atoms seems feasible in the near future.

Decay modes of two repulsively interacting bosons

We study the decay of two repulsively interacting bosons tunneling through a delta potential barrier by direct numerical solution of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation. The solutions are analyzed according to the regions of particle presence: both particles inside the trap (in-in), one particle in and one particle out (in-out), and both particles outside (out-out). It is shown that the in-in probability is dominated by exponential decay, and its decay rate is predicted very well from outgoing boundary conditions. Up to a certain range of interaction strength the decay of in-out probability is dominated by the single particle decay mode. The decay mechanisms are adequately described by simple models.

Simulating strongly correlated multiparticle systems in a truncated Hilbert space

Representing a strongly interacting multi-particle wave function in a finite product basis leads to errors. Simple rescaling of the contact interaction can preserve the low-lying energy spectrum and long-wavelength structure of wave functions in one-dimensional systems and thus correct for the basis set truncation error. The analytic form of the rescaling is found for a two-particle system where the rescaling is exact. Detailed comparison between finite Hilbert space calculations and exact results for up to 5 particles show that rescaling can significantly improve the accuracy of numerical calculations in various external potentials. In addition to ground state energies, the low-lying excitation spectrum, density profile and correlation functions are studied. The results give a promising outlook for numerical simulations of trapped ultracold atoms.

Traveling Dark Solitons in Superfluid Fermi Gases

Families of dark solitons exist in superfluid Fermi gases. The energy-velocity dispersion and number of depleted particles completely determines the dynamics of dark solitons on a slowly-varying background density. For the unitary Fermi gas we determine these relations from general scaling arguments and conservation of local particle number. We find solitons to oscillate sinusoidally at the trap frequency reduced by a factor of $1/\sqrt{3}$. Numerical integration of the time-dependent Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation determines spatial profiles and soliton dispersion relations across the BEC-BCS crossover and proves consistent with the scaling relations at unitarity.

Robust Mesoscopic Superposition of Strongly Correlated Ultracold Atoms

We propose a scheme to create coherent superpositions of annular flow of strongly-interacting bosonic atoms in a 1D ring trap. The non-rotating ground state is coupled to a vortex state with mesoscopic angular momentum by means of a narrow potential barrier and an applied phase that originates from either rotation or a synthetic magnetic field. We show that superposition states in the Tonks-Girardeau regime are robust against single-particle loss due to the effects of strong correlations. The coupling between the mesoscopically distinct states scales much more favorably with particle number than in schemes relying on weak interactions, thus making particle numbers of hundreds or thousands feasible. Coherent oscillations induced by time variation of parameters may serve as a 'smoking gun' signature for detecting superposition states.

Anisotropic Superfluidity in the Two-Species Polar Fermi Gas

We study the superfluid pairing in a two-species gas of heteronuclear fermionic molecules with equal density. The interplay of the isotropic s-wave interaction and anisotropic long-range dipolar interaction reveals rich physics. We find that the single-particle momentum distribution has a characteristic ellipsoidal shape that can be reasonably represented by a deformation parameter $α$ defined similarly to the normal phase. Interesting momentum-dependent features of the order parameter are identified. We calculate the critical temperatures of both the singlet and triplet superfluid, suggesting a possible pairing symmetry transition by tuning the s-wave or dipolar interaction strength.

Decay of superfluid currents in the interacting one-dimensional Bose gas

We examine the superfluid properties of a 1D Bose gas in a ring trap based on the model of Lieb and Liniger. While the 1D Bose gas has nonclassical rotational inertia and exhibits quantization of velocities, the metastability of currents depends sensitively on the strength of interactions in the gas: the stronger the interactions, the faster the current decays. It is shown that the Landau critical velocity is zero in the thermodynamic limit due to the first supercurrent state, which has zero energy and finite probability of excitation. We calculate the energy dissipation rate of ring currents in the presence of weak defects, which should be observable on experimental time scales.

Sign of tunnel coupling in barrier-separated Bose-Einstein condensates and stability of double-ring systems

We revisit recent claims about the instability of non-rotating tunnel coupled annular Bose-Einstein condensates leading to the emergence of angular-momentum Josephson oscillation [Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 050401 (2007), arXiv:quant-ph/0609133v2]. It was predicted that all stationary states with uniform density become unstable in certain parameter regimes. By careful analysis, we arrive at a different conclusion. We show that there is a stable non-rotating and uniform ground state for any value of the tunnel coupling and repulsive interactions. The instability of an excited state with $π$ phase difference between the condensates can be interpreted in terms of the familiar snake instability. We further discuss the sign of the tunnel coupling through a separating barrier, which carries significance for the nature of the stationary states. It is found to always be negative for physical reasons.

Approximate expression for the dynamic structure factor in the Lieb-Liniger model

Recently, Imambekov and Glazman [Phys. Rev. Lett. 100, 206805 (2008)] showed that the dynamic structure factor (DSF) of the 1D Bose gas demonstrates power-law behaviour along the limiting dispersion curve of the collective modes and calculated the corresponding exponents exactly. Combining these recent results with a previously obtained strong-coupling expansion we present an interpolation formula for the DSF of the 1D Bose gas. The obtained expression is further consistent with exact low energy exponents from Luttinger liquid theory and shows nice agreement with recent numerical results.

Dynamic and static density-density correlations in the one-dimensional Bose gas: exact results and approximations

We discuss approximate formulas for the dynamic structure factor of the one-dimensional Bose gas in the Lieb-Liniger model that appear to be applicable over a wide range of the relevant parameters such as the interaction strength, frequency, and wavenumber. The suggested approximations are consistent with the exact results known in limiting cases. In particular, we encompass exact edge exponents as well as Luttinger liquid and perturbation theoretic results. We further discuss derived approximations for the static structure factor and the pair distribution function g(x). The approximate expressions show excellent agreement with numerical results based on the algebraic Bethe ansatz.

Localization by entanglement

We study the localization of bosonic atoms in an optical lattice, which interact in a spatially confined region. The classical theory predicts that there is no localization below a threshold value for the strength of interaction that is inversely proportional to the number of participating atoms. In a full quantum treatment, however, we find that localized states exist for arbitrarily weak attractive or repulsive interactions for any number ($>1$) of atoms. We further show, using an explicit solution of the two-particle bound state and an appropriate measure of entanglement, that the entanglement tends to a finite value in the limit of weak interactions. Coupled with the non-existence of localization in an optimized quantum product state, we conclude that the localization exists by virtue of entanglement.

Experiments on Multidimensional Solitons

This article presents an overview of experimental efforts in recent years related to multidimensional solitons in Bose-Einstein condensates. We discuss the techniques used to generate and observe multidimensional nonlinear waves in Bose-Einstein condensates with repulsive interactions. We further summarize observations of planar soliton fronts undergoing the snake instability, the formation of vortex rings, and the emergence of hybrid structures.

Fano blockade by a Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical lattice

We study the transport of atoms across a localized Bose-Einstein condensate in a one-dimensional optical lattice. For atoms scattering off the condensate we predict total reflection as well as full transmission for certain parameter values on the basis of an exactly solvable model. The findings of analytical and numerical calculations are interpreted by a tunable Fano-like resonance and may lead to interesting applications for blocking and filtering atom beams.
