Computational studies of giant edge islands and unpaired X-points in HSX and W7-X by manipulating coil currents

We present magnetic configurations in the Helically Symmetric eXperiment (HSX) and Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X), in which the edge magnetic structure is dominated by island chains which are spatially larger than the previously reported configurations. These ``giant" island chains (with rotational transform $\iota=4/3$ or $4/4$ for HSX and $\iota=5/6$, $5/5$ or $5/4$ for W7-X) are obtained by reducing the coil current in main coil 6 for HSX and non-planar coil 5 for W7-X (i.e. the coil nearest the up-down symmetric cross-section $\phi=36^\circ$ for W7-X and $\phi=45^\circ$ for HSX); this appears a sufficient (but not necessary) condition for giant islands. The giant islands create relatively straight X-point legs which transport plasma to the plasma-facing components (PFCs). In the most extreme cases, the island O-points leave the domain of the field line map and the divertor legs of the remaining ``unpaired" X-points do not close around the island. We use the anisotropic heat diffusion code EMC3-Lite to find ``giant island" W7-X configurations which are promising for PFC heat loads. Coil forces analysis (in addition to other effects such as neoclassical transport and magnetohydrodynamic stability) would also be required but are not explored here. It is not known whether giant islands are intrinsically favourable for divertor performance but we demonstrate that such regimes, which are far from the ordinary island divertor, are obtainable and can in principle be studied experimentally. This also reveals the flexibility of existing machines for edge studies beyond their original design space.

A comparison of low-n Mercier unstable Wendelstein stellarators and quasi-interchange modes in tokamaks

Mercier's criterion is typically enforced as a hard operational limit in stellarator design. At the same time, past experimental and numerical studies have shown that this limit may often be surpassed, though the exact mechanism behind this nonlinear stability is not well understood. This work aims to contribute to our current understanding by comparing the nonlinear evolution of Mercier unstable Wendelstein stellarators to that of nonlinearly stable quasi-interchange modes in tokamaks. A high mirror, very low $\iota$, W7-X-like configuration is first simulated. A second case is then considered using experimental reconstructions of intermediate $\beta$ W7-AS discharges, where saturated low-n modes were observed experimentally, with sustained MHD signatures over tens of milliseconds. The possible reasons for the discrepancies between experiment and simulation, and the observation of partial reconnection in contrast to flux pumping are discussed, in view of reproducing and designing for operation of stellarators beyond the Mercier stability limit.

Nonlinear MHD simulation of core plasma collapse events in stellarators

The core collapse events observed in a stellarator experiment are studied by a three-dimensional nonlinear MHD simulations. In the low magnetic shear configuration like the Wendelstein 7-X, the rotational transform profile is very sensitive to the toroidal current density. The 3D equilibrium with localized toroidal current density is studied. If the toroidal current density follows locally in the middle of the plasma minor radius, the rotational transform is also changed locally. Sometimes, the magnetic topology changes due to appearing the magnetic island. The nonlinear behaviors of the MHD instability are studied by a full three-dimensional nonlinear MHD code. It was found that a following sequence. At first, the high-n ballooning-type mode structure appears in the plasma core, and then the mode linearly grows. The high-n ballooning modes nonlinearly couple and saturate. The mode structure changes to the low-n mode. In that phase, the magnetic field structure becomes strongly stochastic into the plasma core due to the nonlinear coupling. Finally, the plasma pressure diffuses along the stochastic field lines, and then the core plasma pressure drops. This is an important results to interpret the core collapse event by strong nonlinear coupling.

First Results from an Event Synchronized -- High Repetition Thomson Scattering System at Wendelstein 7-X

The Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) Thomson scattering (TS) diagnostic was upgraded to transiently achieve kilohertz sampling rates combined with adjustable measuring times. The existing Nd:YAG lasers are employed to repetitively emit "bursts", i.e. multiple laser pulses in a short time interval. Appropriately timing burst in the three available lasers, up to twelve evenly spaced consecutive measurements per burst are possible. The pulse-to-pulse increment within a burst can be tuned from 2 ms to 33.3 ms (500 kHz - 30 Hz). Additionally, an event trigger system was developed to synchronize the burst Thomson scattering measurements to plasma events. Exemplary, a case of fast electron density and temperature evolution after cryogenic H2 pellet injection is presented in order to demonstrate the capabilities of the method.
