Monodromy groups of polynomials of composition length 2

We study the monodromy groups of compositions of two indecomposable polynomials. In particular, we show that such monodromy groups either fulfill a certain ``largeness" property, or belong to an explicit list of exceptions. Such largeness results are crucial for dealing with compositions of more than two polynomials, and consequently are expected to have a wide range of applications to problems concerning the arithmetic of polynomials and arithmetic dynamics. In particular, our main result is a key ingredient in the solution of a long-standing open problem due to Davenport, Lewis and Schinzel, achieved in a companion paper.

Integrally Hilbertian rings and the polynomial Schinzel hypothesis

The classical Hilbert specialization property is a field-theoretic tool ensuring that polynomial irreducibility over a field is preserved under specialization of some of the variables. We develop an integral counterpart by introducing the notion of {integrally Hilbertian rings}, where specialization takes place inside a ring and irreducibility is required over the ring. A core part shows how new obstacles to irreducibility such as coefficient divisors or fixed divisors can be dealt with over Krull domains, a large class of rings including UFDs, Dedekind domains, etc. As a result, we obtain a general criterion for integral hilbertianity, along with many examples, \hbox{e.g.} all rings of integers of number fields. Polynomial rings over arbitrary domains are other examples. As an application, we prove a polynomial variant of the Schinzel Hypothesis on prime values of polynomials with integer coefficients: if $\mathcal{Z}$ is an integrally Hilbertian ring, the hypothesis becomes a true statement if the ring of integers ${\mathbb Z}$ is replaced by the polynomial ring $\mathcal{Z}[U]$ and ``prime'' by ``irreducible''. This result generalizes previous works and fits in a unified framework for Schinzel-type phenomena that we introduce. We further obtain an additional conclusion that has some noteworthy consequences for the classical Schinzel Hypothesis itself.

The Davenport-Lewis-Schinzel problem on the reducibility of $f(X)-g(Y)$

We solve the problem of Davenport--Lewis--Schinzel (DLS), originating in the 1950s, regarding the reducibility of $f(X)-g(Y)\in\mathbb C[X,Y]$. This yields an almost-complete solution to the Hilbert--Siegel problem: For a polynomial map $f$ whose composition factors avoid only very specific low-degree polynomials, we explicitly describe over which integers the fibers of $f$ are reducible. We further apply the solution to stability of iterates of $f$ in arithmetic dynamics, and to solving the functional equation $f(X)=g(Y)$ in $X,Y\in\mathbb{C}(z)$.

Linear constellations in primes with arithmetic restrictions

We prove analogues of the theorem of Green and Tao on linear constellations in primes, in which the primes under consideration are restricted by certain arithmetic conditions. Our first main result is conditional upon Hooley's Riemann hypothesis and imposes the extra condition that the primes have prescribed primitive roots. Our second main result is unconditional and imposes the extra condition that the primes have prescribed Artin symbols in given Galois number fields. In the appendix we present an application of the second result in inverse Galois theory.

On the set of stable primes for postcritically infinite maps over number fields

Many interesting questions in arithmetic dynamics revolve, in one way or another, around the (local and/or global) reducibility behavior of iterates of a polynomial. We show that for very general families of integer polynomials $f$ (and, more generally, rational functions over number fields), the set of stable primes, i.e., primes modulo which all iterates of $f$ are irreducible, is a density zero set. Compared to previous results, our families cover a much wider ground, and in particular apply to $100\%$ of polynomials of any given odd degree, thus adding evidence to the conjecture that polynomials with a "large" set of stable primes are necessarily of a very specific shape, and in particular are necessarily postcritically finite.

Unramified extensions of quadratic number fields with Galois group $2.A_n$

We realize infinitely many covering groups $2.A_n$ (where $A_n$ is the alternating group) as the Galois group of everywhere unramified Galois extensions over infinitely many quadratic number fields. After several predecessor works investigating special cases or proving conditional results in this direction, these are the first unramified realizations of infinitely many of these groups.

A note on monogenic even polynomials

We extend several predecessor works on even sextic monogenic polynomials. In particular, we prove a conjecture of Lenny Jones, thereby classifying even sextic monogenic polynomials with cyclic Galois group. This result is key to completing previous partial results on existence or non-existence of infinite families of even sextic monogenic polynomials with a prescribed Galois group. Some of the underlying ideas are relevant for investigation of more general families of even polynomials $f(X^2)$, or power-compositional polynomials $f(X^\ell)$.

Critical Point Criteria and Dynamically Monogenic Polynomials

Let $K$ be a number field with ring of integers $\mathcal{O}_K$, and let $f(x)\in\mathcal{O}_K[x]$ be a monic, irreducible polynomial. We establish necessary and sufficient conditions in terms of the critical points of $f(x)$ for the iterates of $f(x)$ to be monogenic polynomials. More generally, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the backwards orbits of elements of $\mathcal{O}_K$ under $f(x)$ to be monogenerators. We apply our criteria to construct novel examples of dynamically monogenic polynomials, yielding infinite towers of monogenic number fields with the backward orbit of one monogenerator giving a monogenerator at the next level.

Unramified extensions of quadratic number fields with Galois group $SL_2(7)$

We provide an infinite family of quadratic number fields with everywhere unramified Galois extensions of Galois group $SL_2(7)$. To my knowledge, this is the first instance of infinitely many such realizations for a perfect group which is not generated by involutions, a property which makes it difficult to approach for the problem in question and leads to somewhat delicate local-global problems in inverse Galois theory.

Sparsity of stable primes for dynamical sequences

We show that a dynamical sequence $(f_n)_{n\in \mathbb{N}}$ of polynomials over a number field whose set of stable primes is of positive density must necessarily have a very restricted, and in particular ``near-solvable" dynamical Galois group. Together with existing heuristics, our results suggest moreover that a polynomial $f$ all of whose iterates are irreducible modulo a positive density subset of the primes must necessarily be a composition of linear functions, monomials and Dickson polynomials.

On sets of rational functions which locally represent all of $\mathbb{Q}$

We investigate finite sets of rational functions $\{ f_{1},f_{2}, \dots, f_{r} \}$ defined over some number field $K$ satisfying that any $t_{0} \in K$ is a $K_{p}$-value of one of the functions $f_{i}$ for almost all primes $p$ of $K$. We give strong necessary conditions on the shape of functions appearing in a minimal set with this property, as well as numerous concrete examples showing that these necessary conditions are in a way also close to sufficient. We connect the problem to well-studied concepts such as intersective polynomials and arithmetically exceptional functions.

Polynomial compositions with large monodromy groups and applications to arithmetic dynamics

For a composition $f=f_1\circ\cdots \circ f_r$ of polynomials $f_i\in \mathbb Q[x]$ of degrees $d_i\geq 5$ with alternating or symmetric monodromy group, we show that the monodromy group of $f$ contains the iterated wreath product $A_{d_r}\wr \cdots\wr A_{d_1}$. A similar property holds more generally for polynomials that do not factor through $x^d$ or Chebyshev. We derive consequences to arithmetic dynamics regarding arboreal representations, and forward and backward orbits of such $f$. In particular, given an orbit $(a_n)_{n=0}^\infty$ of $f$ as above, we show that for "almost all" $a\in \mathbb Z$, the set of primes $p$ for which some $a_n$ is congruent to $a$ mod $p$ is "small".

On intersective polynomials with non-solvable Galois group

We present new theoretical results on the existence of intersective polynomials with certain prescribed Galois groups, namely the projective and affine linear groups $PGL_2(\ell)$ and $AGL_2(\ell)$ as well as the affine symplectic groups $AGSp_4(\ell):=(\mathbb{F}_\ell)^4 \rtimes GSp_4(\ell)$. For further families of affine groups, existence results are proven conditional on the existence on certain tamely ramified Galois extensions. We also compute explicit families of intersective polynomials for certain non-solvable groups.

Locally cyclic extensions with Galois group $GL_2(p)$

Using Galois representations attached to elliptic curves, we construct Galois extensions of $\mathbb{Q}$ with group $GL_2(p)$ in which all decomposition groups are cyclic. This is the first such realization for all primes $p$.

On fake subfields of number fields

We investigate the failure of a local-global principle with regard to "containment of number fields"; i.e., we are interested in pairs of number fields $(K_1,K_2)$ such that $K_2$ is not a subfield of any algebraic conjugate $K_1^σ$ of $K_1$, but the splitting type of any single rational prime $p$ unramified in $K_1$ and in $K_2$ is such that it cannot rule out the containment $K_2\subseteq K_1^σ$. Examples of such situations arise naturally, but not exclusively, via the well-studied concept of arithmetically equivalent number fields. We give some systematic constructions yielding "fake subfields" (in the above sense) which are not induced by arithmetic equivalence. This may also be interpreted as a failure of a certain local-global principle related to zeta functions of number fields.

Quadratic number fields with unramified $SL_2(5)$-extensions

Continuing the line of thought of an earlier work, we provide the first infinite family of quadratic number fields with everywhere unramified Galois extensions of Galois group $SL_2(5)$, the (unique) smallest nonsolvable group for which this problem was previously open. Our approach also improves upon previous work by yielding the first infinite family of real-quadratic fields possessing an unramified Galois extension whose Galois group is perfect and not generated by involutions. Our result also amounts to a new existence result on quintic number fields with squarefree discriminant and additional local conditions.

Reducible Fibers of Polynomial Maps

For a degree $n$ polynomial $f$ over the rationals, the elements in the fiber $f^{-1}(a)$ are of degree $n$ over $\mathbb Q$ for most rational values $a$ by Hilbert's irreducibility theorem. Determining the set of exceptional $a$'s without this property is a long standing open problem that is closely related to the Davenport--Lewis--Schinzel problem (1959) on reducibility of separated polynomials. As opposed to previous work which mostly concerns indecomposable $f$, we answer both problems for decomposable $f=f_1\circ\cdots\circ f_r$, as long as the indecomposable factors $f_i\in\mathbb Q[x]$ are of degree at least $5$ and are not $x^n$ or a Chebyshev polynomial composed with linear polynomials.

The Hilbert-Grunwald specialization property over number fields

Given a finite group $G$ and a number field $K$, we investigate the following question: Does there exist a Galois extension $E/K(t)$ with group $G$ whose set of specializations yields solutions to all Grunwald problems for the group $G$, outside a finite set of primes? Following previous work, such a Galois extension would be said to have the "Hilbert-Grunwald property". In this paper we reach a complete classification of groups $G$ which admit an extension with the Hilbert-Grunwald property over fields such as $K=\mathbb{Q}$. We thereby also complete the determination of the ``local dimension" of finite groups over $\mathbb{Q}$.
