Nondispersive solutions to the L2-critical half-wave equation

We consider the focusing $L^2$-critical half-wave equation in one space dimension $$ i \partial_t u = D u - |u|^2 u, $$ where $D$ denotes the first-order fractional derivative. Standard arguments show that there is a critical threshold $M_* > 0$ such that all $H^{1/2}$ solutions with $\| u \|_{L^2} < M_*$ extend globally in time, while solutions with $\| u \|_{L^2} \geq M_*$ may develop singularities in finite time. In this paper, we first prove the existence of a family of traveling waves with subcritical arbitrarily small mass. We then give a second example of nondispersive dynamics and show the existence of finite-time blowup solutions with minimal mass $\| u_0 \|_{L^2} = M_*$. More precisely, we construct a family of minimal mass blowup solutions that are parametrized by the energy $E_0 >0$ and the linear momentum $P_0 \in \R$. In particular, our main result (and its proof) can be seen as a model scenario of minimal mass blowup for $L^2$-critical nonlinear PDE with nonlocal dispersion.

A non-local inequality and global existence

In this article we prove a collection of new non-linear and non-local integral inequalities. As an example for $u\ge 0$ and $p\in (0,\infty)$ we obtain $$ \int_{\threed} dx ~ u^{p+1}(x) \le (\frac{p+1}{p})^2 \int_{\threed} dx ~ \{(-\triangle)^{-1} u(x) \} \nsm \nabla u^{\frac{p}{2}}(x)\nsm^2. $$ We use these inequalities to deduce global existence of solutions to a non-local heat equation with a quadratic non-linearity for large radial monotonic positive initial conditions. Specifically, we improve \cite{ksLM} to include all $α\in (0, 74/75)$.

Global solutions to a non-local diffusion equation with quadratic non-linearity

In this paper we prove the global in time well-posedness of the following non-local diffusion equation with $α\in[0,2/3)$: $$ \partial_t u = {(-\triangle)^{-1}u} \triangle u + αu^2, \quad u(t=0) = u_0. $$ The initial condition $u_0$ is positive, radial, and non-increasing with $u_0\in L^1\cap L^{2+δ}(\threed)$ for some small $δ>0$. There is no size restriction on $u_0$. This model problem appears of interest due to its structural similarity with Landau's equation from plasma physics, and moreover its radically different behavior from the semi-linear Heat equation: $u_t = \triangle u + αu^2$.

Global dynamics above the ground state energy for the one-dimensional NLKG equation

In this paper we obtain a global characterization of the dynamics of even solutions to the one-dimensional nonlinear Klein-Gordon (NLKG) equation on the line with focusing nonlinearity |u|^{p-1}u, p>5, provided their energy exceeds that of the ground state only sightly. The method is the same as in the three-dimensional case arXiv:1005.4894, the major difference being in the construction of the center-stable manifold. The difficulty there lies with the weak dispersive decay of 1-dimensional NLKG. In order to address this specific issue, we establish local dispersive estimates for the perturbed linear Klein-Gordon equation, similar to those of Mizumachi arXiv:math/0605031. The essential ingredient for the latter class of estimates is the absence of a threshold resonance of the linearized operator.

Global dynamics away from the ground state for the energy-critical nonlinear wave equation

We study global behavior of radial solutions for the nonlinear wave equation with the focusing energy critical nonlinearity in three and five space dimensions. Assuming that the solution has energy at most slightly more than the ground states and gets away from them in the energy space, we can classify its behavior into four cases, according to whether it blows up in finite time or scatters to zero, in forward or backward time direction. We prove that initial data for each case constitute a non-empty open set in the energy space. This is an extension of the recent results by the latter two authors on the subcritical nonlinear Klein-Gordon and Schrödinger equations, except for the part of the center manifolds. The key step is to prove the "one-pass" theorem, which states that the transition from the scattering region to the blow-up region can take place at most once along each trajectory. The main new ingredients are the control of the scaling parameter and the blow-up characterization by Duyckaerts, Kenig and Merle.

Concentration compactness for critical wave maps

By means of the concentrated compactness method of Bahouri-Gerard and Kenig-Merle, we prove global existence and regularity for wave maps with smooth data and large energy from 2+1 dimensions into the hyperbolic plane. The argument yields an apriori bound of the Coulomb gauged derivative components of our wave map relative to a suitable norm (which holds the solution) in terms of the energy alone. As a by-product of our argument, we obtain a phase-space decomposition of the gauged derivative components analogous to the one of Bahouri-Gerard.

Renormalization and blow up for the critical Yang-Mills problem

We consider the Yangs-Mills equations in 4+1 dimensions. This is the energy critical case and we show that it admits a family of solutions which blow up in finite time. They are obtained by the spherically symmetric ansatz in the SO(4) gauge group and result by rescaling of the instanton solution. The rescaling is done via a prescribed rate which in this case is a modification of the self-similar rate by a power of |log t|. The powers themselves take any value exceeding 3/2 and thus form a continuum of distinct rates leading to blow-up. The methods are related to the authors' previous work on wave maps and the energy critical semi-linear equation. However, in contrast to these equations, the linearized Yang-Mills operator (around an instanton) exhibits a zero energy eigenvalue rather than a resonance. This turns out to have far-reaching consequences, amongst which are a completely different family of rates leading to blow-up (logarithmic rather than polynomial corrections to the self-similar rate).

On Stability of Pseudo-Conformal Blowup for L^2-critical Hartree NLS

We consider $L^2$-critical focusing nonlinear Schroedinger equations with Hartree type nonlinearity $$i \pr_t u = -\DD u - \big (Φ\ast |u|^2 \big) u \quad {in $\RR^4$},$$ where $Φ(x)$ is a perturbation of the convolution kernel $|x|^{-2}$. Despite the lack of pseudo conformal invariance for this equation, we prove the existence of critical mass finite-time blowup solutions $u(t,x)$ that exhibit the pseudo-conformal blowup rate $$ \| \nabla u(t) \|_{L^2_x} \sim \frac{1}{|t|} \quad {as} \quad t \nearrow 0 . $$ Furthermore, we prove the finite-codimensional stability of this conformal blow up, by extending the nonlinear wave operator construction by Bourgain and Wang (see \cite{Bourgain+Wang1997}) to $L^2$-critical Hartree NLS.

Slow blow-up solutions for the H^1(R^3) critical focusing semi-linear wave equation in R^3

We prove the existence of energy solutions of the energy critical focusing wave equation in R^3 which blow up exactly at x=t=0. They decompose into a bulk term plus radiation term. The bulk is a rescaled version of the stationary "soliton" type solution of the NLW. The construction depends crucially on the renormalization procedure of the "soliton" which we introduced in our companion paper on the wave map problem.

Renormalization and blow up for charge one equivariant critical wave maps

We prove the existence of equivariant finite time blow up solutions for the wave map problem from 2+1 dimensions into the 2-sphere. These solutions are the sum of a dynamically rescaled ground-state harmonic map plus a radiation term. The local energy of the latter tends to zero as time approaches blow up time. This is accomplished by first "renormalizing" the rescaled ground state harmonic map profile by solving an elliptic equation, followed by a perturbative analysis.

On the focusing critical semi-linear wave equation

The focusing critical wave equation in three dimensions exhibits a special class of static solutions which are linearly unstable. These solutions decay like an inverse first power. We construct small codimension one stable manifolds in the class of radial perturbations for these static solutions. We show that initial data on this manifold lead to global solutions. Moreover, the long-time behavior of these solutions can be described explicitly. In particular, the family of static solutions acts as an attractor for these solutions. On a technical level, we remark that the linearized operator exhibits a zero energy resonance, and we develop the tools needed for that case.

Non-generic blow-up solutions for the critical focusing NLS in 1-d

This paper addresses the existence of codimension one stable manifolds for the pseudo-conformal blow-up solution for critical one-dimensional NLS. By the work of Perelman and Merle, Raphael, the blow-up rate of these solutions is far from the generic one. However, Bourgain,Wang and Perelman formulated the possibility of codimension one stable manifolds for the non-generic blow-up solutions. This paper established the existence of such manifolds, albeit only in the measurable category.

Stability of Spherically Symmetric Wave Maps

We study Wave Maps from R^{2+1} to the hyperbolic plane with smooth compactly supported initial data which are close to smooth spherically symmetric ones with respect to some H^{1+μ}, μ>0. We show that such Wave Maps don't develop singularities and stay close to the Wave Map extending the spherically symmetric data with respect to all H^{1+δ}, δ<μ_{0}(μ). We obtain a similar result for Wave Maps whose initial data are close to geodesic ones. This generalizes a theorem of Sideris for this context.

Global Regularity of Wave Maps from R^{3+1} to H^2

We consider Wave Maps with smooth compactly supported initial data of small H^{3/2}-norm from R^{3+1} to the hyperbolic plane and show that they stay smooth globally in time. Our methods are based on the introduction of a global Coulomb Gauge as in a recent paper by Shatah and Struwe, followed by dynamic separation as in earlier work of Klainerman and Machedon. We then rely on an adaptation of T.Tao's methods used in his recent breakthrough result on Wave Maps to spheres in low spatial dimensions.
