Compactness properties for modulation spaces

We prove that if $ω_1$ and $ω_2$ are moderate weights and $\mascB$ is a suitable (quasi-)Banach function space, then a necessary and sufficient condition for the embedding $i\, :\, M (ω_1,\mascB )\to M (ω_2,\mascB )$ between two modulation spaces to be compact is that the quotient $ω_2/ω_1$ vanishes at infinity. Moreover we show, that the boundedness of $ω_2/ω_1$ a necessary and sufficient condition for the previous embedding to be continuous.

Semi-continuous convolutions on weakly periodic Lebesgue spaces

We deduce mixed quasi-norm estimates of Lebesgue types on semi-continuous convolutions between sequences and functions which may be periodic or possess a weaker form of periodicity in certain directions. In these directions, the Lebesgue quasi-norms are applied on the period instead of the whole axes.

The Weyl product on quasi-Banach modulation spaces

We study the bilinear Weyl product acting on quasi-Banach modulation spaces. We find sufficient conditions for continuity of the Weyl product and we derive necessary conditions. The results extend known results for Banach modulation spaces.

Liftings for ultra-modulation spaces, and one-parameter groups of Gevrey type pseudo-differential operators

We deduce one-parameter group properties for pseudo-differential operators $\operatorname{Op} (a)$, where $a$ belongs to the class $Γ^{(ω_0)}_*$ of certain Gevrey symbols. We use this to show that there are pseudo-differential operators $\operatorname{Op} (a)$ and $\operatorname{Op} (b)$ which are inverses to each others, where $a\in Γ^{(ω_0)}_*$ and $b\in Γ^{(1/ω_0)}_*$. We apply these results to deduce lifting property for modulation spaces and construct explicit isomorpisms between them. For each weight functions $ω,ω_0$ moderated by GRS submultiplicative weights, we prove that the Toeplitz operator (or localization operator) $\operatorname{Tp} (ω_0)$ is an isomorphism from $M^{p,q}_{(ω)}$ onto $M^{p,q}_{(ω/ω_0)}$ for every $p,q \in (0,\infty ]$.

Passive approximation and optimization using B-splines

A passive approximation problem is formulated where the target function is an arbitrary complex valued continuous function defined on an approximation domain consisting of a finite union of closed and bounded intervals on the real axis. The norm used is a weighted $\text{L}^p$-norm where $1\leq p\leq\infty$. The approximating functions are Herglotz functions generated by a measure with Hölder continuous density in an arbitrary neighborhood of the approximation domain. Hence, the imaginary and the real parts of the approximating functions are Hölder continuous functions given by the density of the measure and its Hilbert transform, respectively. In practice, it is useful to employ finite B-spline expansions to represent the generating measure. The corresponding approximation problem can then be posed as a finite-dimensional convex optimization problem which is amenable for numerical solution. A constructive proof is given here showing that the convex cone of approximating functions generated by finite uniform B-spline expansions of fixed arbitrary order (linear, quadratic, cubic, etc) is dense in the convex cone of Herglotz functions which are locally Hölder continuous in a neighborhood of the approximation domain, as mentioned above. As an illustration, a typical physical application example is included regarding the passive approximation and optimization of a linear system having metamaterial characteristics.

Periodic distributions and periodic elements in modulation spaces

We characterize periodic elements in Gevrey classes, Gelfand-Shilov distribution spaces and modulation spaces, in terms of estimates of involved Fourier coefficients, and by estimates of their short-time Fourier transforms. If $q\in [1,\infty )$, $ω$ is a suitable weight and $(\maclE _0^E)'$ is the set of all $E$-periodic elements, then we prove that the dual of $M^{\infty ,q}_{(ω)}\cap (\maclE _0^E)'$ equals $M^{\infty ,q'}_{(1/ω)}\cap (\maclE _0^E)'$ by suitable extensions of Bessel's identity.

Wave-front sets related to quasi-analytic Gevrey sequences

Quasi-analytic wave-front sets of distributions which correspond to the Gevrey sequence $p!^s$, $s\in[1/2,1)$ are defined and investigated. The propagation of singularities are deduced by considering sequences of Gaussian windowed short-time Fourier transforms of distributions which are modifications of the original distributions by suitable restriction-extension techniques. Basic micro-local properties of the new wave-fronts are thereafter established.

Schatten properties, nuclearity and minimality of shift invariant spaces

We extend Feichtinger's minimality property on smallest non-trivial time-frequency shift invariant Banach spaces, to the quasi-Banach case. Analogous properties are deduced for certain matrix classes. We use these results to prove that $\operatorname{Op}(a)$ is a Schatten-$q$ operator from $M^\infty$ to $M^p$ and $r$-nuclear operator from $M^\infty$ to $M^r$ when $a\in M^r$ for suitable $p$, $q$ and $r$ in $(0,\infty ]$.

Matrix parameterized pseudo-differential calculi on modulation spaces

We consider a broad matrix parameterized family of pseudo-differential calculi, containing the usual Shubin's family of pseudo-differential calculi, parameterized by real numbers. We show that continuity properties in the framework of modulation space theory, valid for the Shubin's family extend to the broader matrix parameterized family of pseudo-differential calculi.

Images of function and distribution spaces under the Bargmann transform

We consider a broad family of test function spaces and their dual (distribution) space. The family includes Gelfand-Shilov spaces, a family of test function spaces introduced by S. Pilipovic. We deduce different characterizations of such spaces, especially under the Bargmann transform and the Short-time Fourier transform. The family also include a test function space, whose dual space is mapped by the Bargmann transform bijectively to the set of entire functions.

Continuity and Schatten properties for pseudo-differential operators with symbols in quasi-Banach modulation spaces or Hörmander classes

We establish continuity and Schatten-von Neumann properties for matrix operators with matrices satisfying mixed quasi-norm estimates. These considerations also include the case when the Lebesgue and Schatten parameters are allowed to stay between $0$ and $1$. We use the results to deduce continuity and Schatten-von Neumann properties for pseudo-differential operators with symbols in a broad class of modulation spaces.

Sharp results for the Weyl product on modulation spaces

We give sufficient and necessary conditions on the Lebesgue exponents for the Weyl product to be bounded on modulation spaces. The sufficient conditions are obtained as the restriction to $N=2$ of a result valid for the $N$-fold Weyl product. As a byproduct, we obtain sharp conditions for the twisted convolution to be bounded on Wiener amalgam spaces.

Pseudo-differential operators in a Gelfand-Shilov setting

We introduce some general classes of pseudodifferential operators with symbols admitting exponential type growth at infinity and we prove mapping properties for these operators on Gelfand-Shilov spaces both in the quasi-analytic and in the non-quasi-analytic case. Moreover, we prove composition theorems and certain invariance properties of these classes.

The Bargmann transform and powers of harmonic oscillator on Gelfand-Shilov subspaces

We consider the counter images $\maclJ (\rr d)$ and $\maclJ _0(\rr d)$ of entire functions with exponential and almost exponential bounds, respectively, under the Bargmann transform, and we characterize them by estimates of powers of the harmonic oscillator. We also consider the Pilipovi{ć} spaces $\bsycalS _s(\rr d)$ and $\bsySig _s(\rr d)$ when $0<s<1/2$ and deduce their images under the Bargmann transform.

Gabor analysis for a broad class of quasi-Banach modulation spaces

We extend the Gabor analysis in \cite{GaSa} to a broad class of modulation spaces, allowing more general mixed quasi-norm estimates and weights in the definition of the modulation space quasi-norm. For such spaces we deduce invariance and embedding properties, and that the elements admit reconstructible sequence space representations using Gabor frames.

Global wave-front sets of Banach, Fr{é}chet and Modulation space types, and pseudo-differential operators

We introduce global wave-front sets $\operatorname{WF}_{\mathcal B} (f)$, $f\in {\mathscr S}^\prime(\textbf{R}^d)$, with respect to suitable Banach or Fréchet spaces ${\mathcal B}$. An important special case is given by the modulation spaces ${\mathcal B}=M(ω,\mathscr B)$, where $ω$ is an appropriate weight function and $\mathscr B$ is a translation invariant Banach function space. We show that the standard properties for known notions of wave-front set extend to $\operatorname{WF}_{\mathcal B} (f)$. In particular, we prove that micro locality and microellipticity hold for a class of globally defined pseudo-differential operators $\operatorname{Op}_t(a)$, acting continuously on the involved spaces.

On the inverse to the harmonic oscillator

Let $b_d$ be the Weyl symbol of the inverse to the harmonic oscillator on $\R^d$. We prove that $b_d$ and its derivatives satisfy convenient bounds of Gevrey and Gelfand-Shilov type, and obtain explicit expressions for $b_d$. In the even-dimensional case we characterize $b_d$ in terms of elementary functions. In the analysis we use properties of radial symmetry and a combination of different techniques involving classical a priori estimates, commutator identities, power series and asymptotic expansions.
