Ergodic Average Dominance for Unimodular Amenable Groups

In this paper we show that the ergodic averages of the action of any unimodular amenable group along certain Følner sequences can be dominated by the Cesàro means of a suitably constructed Markov operator, that is, the ergodic averages of an integer action. Moreover, the restriction on these Følner sequences are mild enough so that every two-sided Følner sequence has a subsequence satisfying these conditions. As a consequence of this inequality, we obtain the maximal and pointwise (individual) ergodic theorems for actions of unimodular amenable groups directly from the corresponding ergodic theorems for integer actions. This allows us to deal with the commutative and noncommutative ergodic theorems on an equal footing.

The dynamical Cuntz semigroup and ideal-free quotients of Cuntz semigroups

We develop a theory of general quotients for W- and Cu-semigroups beyond the case of quotients by ideals. To this end, we introduce the notion of a normal pair, which allows us to take quotients of W-semigroups in a similar way as normal subgroups arise as kernels of group homomorphisms. We use this to define the dynamical Cuntz semigroup as the universal object induced from an action of a group G on a W-semigroup. In the C*-algebraic framework, under mild assumptions, the universality of this dynamical invariant helps us tap into the structure of the Cuntz semigroup of crossed product C*-algebras.

A geometric representative for the fundamental class in KK-duality of Smale spaces

A fundamental ingredient in the noncommutative geometry program is the notion of KK-duality, often called K-theoretic Poincaré duality, that generalises Spanier-Whitehead duality. In this paper we construct a $θ$-summable Fredholm module that represents the fundamental class in KK-duality between the stable and unstable Ruelle algebras of a Smale space. To find such a representative, we construct dynamical partitions of unity on the Smale space with highly controlled Lipschitz constants. This requires a generalisation of Bowen's Markov partitions. Along with an aperiodic point-sampling technique we produce a noncommutative analogue of Whitney's embedding theorem, leading to the Fredholm module.

Classification of tiling $C^*$-algebras

We prove that Kellendonk's $C^*$-algebra of an aperiodic and repetitive tiling with finite local complexity is classifiable by the Elliott invariant. Our result follows from showing that tiling $C^*$-algebras are $\mathcal{Z}$-stable, and hence have finite nuclear dimension. To prove $\mathcal{Z}$-stability, we extend Matui's notion of almost finiteness to the setting of étale groupoid actions following the footsteps of Kerr. To use some of Kerr's techniques we have developed a version of the Ornstein-Weiss quasitiling theorem for general étale groupoids.

Rokhlin dimension for actions of residually finite groups

We introduce the concept of Rokhlin dimension for actions of residually finite groups on C*-algebras, extending previous notions of Rokhlin dimension for actions of finite groups and the integers, as introduced by Hirshberg, Winter and the third author. If the group has a box space of finite asymptotic dimension, then actions with finite Rokhlin dimension preserve the property of having finite nuclear dimension, when passing to the crossed product C*-algebra. A detailed study of the asymptotic dimension of box spaces shows that finitely generated, virtually nilpotent groups have box spaces with finite asymptotic dimension, providing a reasonably large class of examples. We then establish a relation between Rokhlin dimension of residually finite groups acting on compact metric spaces and amenability dimension of the action in the sense of Guentner, Willett and Yu. We show that for free actions of infinite, finitely generated, nilpotent groups on finite dimensional spaces, both these dimensional values are finite. In particular, the associated transformation group C*-algebras have finite nuclear dimension. This extends an analogous result about $\mathbb{Z}^m$-actions by the first author. We also provide some results concerning the genericity of finite Rokhlin dimension, and permanence properties with respect to the absorption of a strongly self-absorbing C*-algebra.

Spectral Metric Spaces on Extensions of C*-Algebras

We construct spectral triples on C*-algebraic extensions of unital C*-algebras by stable ideals satisfying a certain Toeplitz type property using given spectral triples on the quotient and ideal. Our construction behaves well with respect to summability and produces new spectral quantum metric spaces out of given ones. Using our construction we find new spectral triples on the quantum 2- and 3-spheres giving a new perspective on these algebras in noncommutative geometry.

The Fubini product and its applications

The Fubini product of operator spaces provide a powerful tool for analysing properties of tensor products. In this paper we review the the theory of Fubini products and apply it to the problem of computing invariant parts of dynamical systems. In particular, we study the invariant translation approximation property of discrete groups.

A Bivariant Theory for the Cuntz Semigroup

We introduce a bivariant version of the Cuntz semigroup as equivalence classes of order zero maps generalizing the ordinary Cuntz semigroup. The theory has many properties formally analogous to KK-theory including a composition product. We establish basic properties, like additivity, stability and continuity, and study categorical aspects in the setting of local C*-algebras. We determine the bivariant Cuntz semigroup for numerous examples such as when the second algebra is a Kirchberg algebra, and Cuntz homology for compact Hausdorff spaces which provides a complete invariant. Moreover, we establish identities when tensoring with strongly self-absorbing C*-algebras. Finally, we show that the bivariant Cuntz semigroup of the present work can be used to classify all unital and stably finite C*-algebras.

Open Projections and Suprema in the Cuntz Semigroup

We provide a new and concise proof of the existence of suprema in the Cuntz semigroup using the open projection picture of the Cuntz semigroup initiated by Ortega, Rordam and Thiel. Our argument is based on the observation that the supremum of a countable set of open projections in the bidual of a C*-algebra A is again open and corresponds to the generated hereditary sub-C*-algebra of A.

Rokhlin dimension and C*-dynamics

We develop the concept of Rokhlin dimension for integer and for finite group actions on C*-algebras. Our notion generalizes the so-called Rokhlin property, which can be thought of as Rokhlin dimension 0. We show that finite Rokhlin dimension is prevalent and appears in cases in which the Rokhlin property cannot be expected: the property of having finite Rokhlin dimension is generic for automorphisms of Z-stable C*-algebras, where Z denotes the Jiang-Su algebra. Moreover, crossed products by automorphisms with finite Rokhlin dimension preserve the property of having finite nuclear dimension, and under a mild additional hypothesis also preserve Z-stability. In topological dynamics our notion may be interpreted as a topological version of the classical Rokhlin lemma: automorphisms arising from minimal homeomorphisms of finite dimensional compact metrizable spaces always have finite Rokhlin dimension. The latter result has by now been generalized by Szabo to the case of free and aperiodic integer (in fact, Z^d) actions on compact metrizable and finite dimensional spaces.

Compact quantum metric spaces from quantum groups of rapid decay

We present a modified version of the definition of property RD for discrete quantum groups given by Vergnioux in order to accommodate examples of non-unimodular quantum groups. Moreover we extend the construction of spectral triples associated to discrete groups with length functions, originally due to Connes, to the setting of quantum groups. For quantum groups of rapid decay we study the resulting spectral triples from the point of view of compact quantum metric spaces in the sense of Rieffel.

On spectral triples on crossed products arising from equicontinuous actions

The external Kasparov product is used to construct odd and even spectral triples on crossed products of $C^*$-algebras by actions of discrete groups which are equicontinuous in a natural sense. When the group in question is $\Z$ this gives another viewpoint on the spectral triples introduced by Belissard, Marcolli and Reihani. We investigate the properties of this construction and apply it to produce spectral triples on the Bunce-Deddens algebra arising from the odometer action on the Cantor set and some other crossed products of AF-algebras.

Approximation properties and entropy estimates for crossed products by actions of amenable discrete quantum groups

We construct explicit approximating nets for crossed products of C*-algebras by actions of discrete quantum groups. This implies that C*-algebraic approximation properties such as nuclearity, exactness or completely bounded approximation property are preserved by taking crossed products by actions of amenable discrete quantum groups. We also show that the noncommutative topological entropy of a transformation commuting with the quantum group action does not change when we pass to the canonical extension to the crossed product. Both these results are extended to twisted crossed products via a stabilisation trick.

The nuclear dimension of C*-algebras

We introduce the nuclear dimension of a C*-algebra; this is a noncommutative version of topological covering dimension based on a modification of the earlier concept of decomposition rank. Our notion behaves well with respect to inductive limits, tensor products, hereditary subalgebras (hence ideals), quotients, and even extensions. It can be computed for many examples; in particular, it is finite for all UCT Kirchberg algebras. In fact, all classes of nuclear C*-algebras which have so far been successfully classified consist of examples with finite nuclear dimension, and it turns out that finite nuclear dimension implies many properties relevant for the classification program. Surprisingly, the concept is also linked to coarse geometry, since for a discrete metric space of bounded geometry the nuclear dimension of the associated uniform Roe algebra is dominated by the asymptotic dimension of the underlying space.

Completely positive maps of order zero

We say a completely positive contractive map between two C*-algebras has order zero, if it sends orthogonal elements to orthogonal elements. We prove a structure theorem for such maps. As a consequence, order zero maps are in one-to-one correspondence with *-homomorphisms from the cone over the domain into the target algebra. Moreover, we conclude that tensor products of order zero maps are again order zero, that the composition of an order zero map with a tracial functional is again a tracial functional, and that order zero maps respect the Cuntz relation, hence induce ordered semigroup morphisms between Cuntz semigroups.

A note on spectral triples and quasidiagonality

Spectral triples (of compact type) are constructed on arbitrary separable quasidiagonal C*-algebras. On the other hand an example of a spectral triple on a non-quasidiagonal algebra is presented.
