Factor systems and geometric structures of strongly graded rings

Graded rings provide a natural algebraic framework for encoding symmetry via decompositions into homogeneous components indexed by a group, together with multiplication rules reflecting the group operation. Among graded rings, strongly graded rings form a particularly well-behaved and structurally rich class. In this paper we introduce a notion of factor systems for strongly graded rings, consisting of algebraic data that encode both the bimodule structure of the homogeneous components and their multiplication relations. In particular, this framework makes it possible to carry out explicit computations. We show that strongly graded rings with fixed principal component are classified, up to isomorphism, by conjugacy classes of such factor systems. Conversely, every abstract factor system gives rise to a strongly graded ring realizing it. In this way, the global structure of a strongly graded ring can be reconstructed from algebraic data on the principal component together with the grading group. Factor systems also provide a convenient framework for studying the problem of lifting derivations from the principal component to graded derivations of the whole ring. We derive explicit compatibility conditions for the existence of such lifts and interpret the resulting obstruction in cohomological terms. This leads to an algebraic analogue of the Atiyah sequence for strongly graded rings and to curvature-type invariants measuring the failure of graded lifts to form Lie algebra homomorphisms. The theory is illustrated by Leavitt path algebras.

On the existence of noncommutative Levi-Civita connections in derivation based calculi

We study the existence of Levi-Civita connections, i.e torsion free connections compatible with a hermitian form, in the setting of derivation based noncommutative differential calculi over $\ast$-algebras. We prove a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of Levi-Civita connections in terms of the image of an operator derived from the hermitian form. Moreover, we identify a necessary symmetry condition on the hermitian form that extends the classical notion of metric symmetry in Riemannian geometry. The theory is illustrated with explicit computations for free modules of rank three, including noncommutative 3-tori. We note that our approach is algebraic and does not rely on analytic tools such as $C^\ast$-algebra norms.

Noncommutative Riemannian geometry of Kronecker algebras

We study aspects of noncommutative Riemannian geometry of the path algebra arising from the Kronecker quiver with N arrows. To start with, the framework of derivation based differential calculi is recalled together with a discussion on metrics and bimodule connections compatible with the *-structure of the algebra. As an illustration, these concepts are applied to the noncommutative torus where examples of torsion free and metric (Levi-Civita) connections are given. In the main part of the paper, noncommutative geometric aspects of (generalized) Kronecker algebras are considered. The structure of derivations and differential calculi is explored, and torsion free bimodule connections are studied together with their compatibility with hermitian forms, playing the role of metrics on the module of differential forms. Moreover, for several different choices of Lie algebras of derivations, non-trivial Levi-Civita connections are constructed.

On the geometry of $(σ,τ)$-algebras

We introduce $(σ,τ)$-algebras as a framework for twisted differential calculi over noncommutative, as well as commutative, algebras with motivations from the theory of $σ$-derivations and quantum groups. A $(σ,τ)$-algebra consists of an associative algebra together with a set of $(σ,τ)$-derivations, and corresponding notions of $(σ,τ)$-modules and connections are introduced. We prove that $(σ,τ)$-connections exist on projective modules, and introduce notions of both torsion and curvature, as well as compatibility with a hermitian form, leading to the definition of a Levi-Civita $(σ,τ)$-connection. To illustrate the novel concepts, we consider $(σ,τ)$-algebras and connections over matrix algebras in detail.

Levi-Civita connections on quantum spheres

We introduce $q$-deformed connections on the quantum 2-sphere and 3-sphere, satisfying a twisted Leibniz rule in analogy with $q$-deformed derivations. We show that such connections always exist on projective modules. Furthermore, a condition for metric compatibility is introduced, and an explicit formula is given, parametrizing all metric connections on a free module. On the quantum 3-sphere, a q-deformed torsion freeness condition is introduced and we derive explicit expressions for the Christoffel symbols of a Levi-Civita connection for a general class of metrics. We also give metric connections on a class of projective modules over the quantum 2-sphere. Finally, we outline a generalization to any Hopf algebra with a (left) covariant calculus and associated quantum tangent space.

On the construction of fuzzy spaces and modules over shift algebras

We introduce shift algebras as certain crossed product algebras based on general function spaces and study properties, as well as the classification, of a particular class of modules depending on a set of matrix parameters. It turns out that the structure of these modules depends in a crucial way on the properties of the function spaces. Moreover, for a class of subalgebras related to compact manifolds, we provide a construction procedure for the corresponding fuzzy spaces, i.e. sequences of finite dimensional modules of increasing dimension as the deformation parameter tends to zero, as well as infinite dimensional modules related to fuzzy non-compact spaces.

Levi-Civita connections for a class of noncommutative minimal surfaces

We study connections on hermitian modules, and show that metric connections exist on regular hermitian modules; i.e finitely generated projective modules together with a non-singular hermitian form. In addition, we develop an index calculus for such modules, and provide a characterization in terms of the existence of a pseudo-inverse of the matrix representing the hermitian form with respect to a set of generators. As a first illustration of the above concepts, we find metric connections on the fuzzy sphere. Finally, the framework is applied to a class of noncommutative minimal surfaces, for which there is a natural concept of torsion, and we prove that there exist metric and torsion-free connections for every minimal surface in this class.

Noncommutative minimal embeddings and morphisms of pseudo-Riemannian calculi

In analogy with classical submanifold theory, we introduce morphisms of real metric calculi together with noncommutative embeddings. We show that basic concepts, such as the second fundamental form and the Weingarten map, translate into the noncommutative setting and, in particular, we prove a noncommutative analogue of Gauss equations for the curvature of a submanifold. Moreover, the mean curvature of an embedding is readily introduced, giving a natural definition of a noncommutative minimal embedding, and we illustrate the novel concepts by considering the noncommutative torus as a minimal surface in the noncommutative 3-sphere.

Projections, modules and connections for the noncommutative cylinder

We initiate a study of projections and modules over a noncommutative cylinder, a simple example of a noncompact noncommutative manifold. Since its algebraic structure turns out to have many similarities with the noncommutative torus, one can develop several concepts in a close analogy with the latter. In particular, we exhibit a countable number of nontrivial projections in the algebra of the noncommutative cylinder itself, and show that they provide concrete representatives for each class in the corresponding $K_0$ group. We also construct a class of bimodules endowed with connections of constant curvature. Furthermore, with the noncommutative cylinder considered from the perspective of pseudo-Riemannian calculi, we derive an explicit expression for the Levi-Civita connection and compute the Gaussian curvature.

On q-deformed Levi-Civita connections

We explore the possibility of introducing q-deformed connections on the quantum 2-sphere and 3-sphere, satisfying a twisted Leibniz rule in analogy with q-deformed derivations. We show that such connections always exist on projective modules. Furthermore, a condition for metric compatibility is introduced, and an explicit formula is given, parametrizing all metric connections on a free module. For the module of 1-forms on the quantum 3-sphere, a q-deformed torsion freeness condition is introduced and we derive explicit expressions for the Christoffel symbols of a Levi-Civita connection for a general class of metrics satisfying a certain reality condition. Finally, we construct metric connections on a class of projective modules over the quantum 2-sphere.

Low dimensional matrix representations for noncommutative surfaces of arbitrary genus

In this note, we initiate a study of the finite-dimensional representation theory of a class of algebras that correspond to noncommutative deformations of compact surfaces of arbitrary genus. Low dimensional representations are investigated in detail and graph representations are used in order to understand the structure of non-zero matrix elements. In particular, for arbitrary genus greater than one, we explicitly construct classes of irreducible two and three dimensional representations. The existence of representations crucially depends on the analytic structure of the polynomial defining the surface as a level set in $\mathbb{R}^3$.

Kähler-Poisson algebras

We introduce Kähler-Poisson algebras as analogues of algebras of smooth functions on Kähler manifolds, and prove that they share several properties with their classical counterparts on an algebraic level. For instance, the module of inner derivations of a Kähler-Poisson algebra is a finitely generated projective module, and allows for a unique metric and torsion-free connection whose curvature enjoys all the classical symmetries. Moreover, starting from a large class of Poisson algebras, we show that every algebra has an associated Kähler-Poisson algebra constructed as a localization. At the end, detailed examples are provided in order to illustrate the novel concepts.

A noncommutative catenoid

A noncommutative algebra corresponding to the classical catenoid is introduced together with a differential calculus of derivations. We prove that there exists a unique metric and torsion-free connection that is compatible with the complex structure, and the curvature is explicitly calculated. A noncommutative analogue of the fact that the catenoid is a minimal surface is studied by constructing a Laplace operator from the connection and showing that the embedding coordinates are harmonic. Furthermore, an integral is defined and the total curvature is computed. Finally, classes of left and right modules are introduced together with constant curvature connections, and bimodule compatibility conditions are discussed in detail.

On the Gauss-Chern-Bonnet theorem for the noncommutative 4-sphere

We construct a differential calculus over the noncommutative 4-sphere in the framework of pseudo-Riemannian calculi, and show that for every metric in a conformal class of perturbations of the round metric, there exists a unique metric and torsion-free connection. Furthermore, we find a localization of the projective module corresponding to the space of vector fields, which allows us to formulate a Gauss-Chern-Bonnet type theorem for the noncommutative 4-sphere.

Riemannian curvature of the noncommutative 3-sphere

In order to investigate to what extent the calculus of classical (pseudo-)Riemannian manifolds can be extended to a noncommutative setting, we introduce pseudo-Riemannian calculi of modules over noncommutative algebras. In this framework, it is possible to prove an analogue of Levi-Civita's theorem, stating that there exists at most one torsion-free and metric connection for a given (metric) module, satisfying the requirements of a real metric calculus. Furthermore, the corresponding curvature operator has the same symmetry properties as the classical Riemannian curvature. As our main motivating example, we consider a pseudo-Riemannian calculus over the noncommutative 3-sphere and explicitly determine the torsion-free and metric connection, as well as the curvature operator together with its scalar curvature.

An axiomatic approach to gradients with applications to Dirichlet and obstacle problems beyond function spaces

We develop a framework for studying variational problems in Banach spaces with respect to gradient relations, which encompasses many of the notions of generalized gradients that appear in the literature. We stress the fact that our approach is not dependent on function spaces and therefore applies equally well to functions on metric spaces as to operator algebras. In particular, we consider analogues of Dirichlet and obstacle problems, as well as first eigenvalue problems, and formulate conditions for the existence of solutions and their uniqueness. Moreover, we investigate to what extent a lattice structure may be introduced on (ordered) Banach spaces via a norm-minimizing variational problem. A multitude of examples is provided to illustrate the versatility of our approach.
