A User's Guide to Morse Foliated Open Books

Morse foliated open books were introduced by the autors (along with abstract and embedded versions) as a tool for studying contact manifolds with boundary, and this article illustrates the advantages of the Morse perspective. We use this to extend the definition of \textit{right-veering} to foliated open books and we show that it plays a similar role in detecting overtwistedness as in other versions of open books.

Foliated Open Books

This paper introduces a new type of open book decomposition for a contact three-manifold with a specified characteristic foliation $\mathcal{F}_ξ$ on its boundary. These \textit{foliated open books} offer a finer tool for studying contact manifolds with convex boundary than existing models, as the boundary foliation carries more data than the dividing set. In addition to establishing fundamental results about the uniqueness and existence of foliated open books, we carefully examine their relationship with the partial open books introduced by Honda-Kazez-Matic. Foliated open books have user-friendly cutting and gluing properties, and they arise naturally as submanifolds of classical open books for closed three-manifolds. We define three versions of foliated open books (embedded, Morse, and abstract), and we prove the equivalence of these models as well as a Giroux Correspondence which characterizes the foliated open books associated to a fixed triple $(M, ξ, \mathcal{F})$.

Rotation numbers and the Euler class in open books

This paper introduces techniques for computing a variety of numerical invariants associated to a Legendrian knot in a contact manifold presented by an open book with a Morse structure. Such a Legendrian knot admits a front projection to the boundary of a regular neighborhood of the binding. From this front projection, we compute the rotation number for any null-homologous Legendrian knot as a count of oriented cusps and linking or intersection numbers; in the case that the manifold has non-trivial second homology, we can recover the rotation number with respect to a Seifert surface in any homology class. We also provide explicit formulas for computing the necessary intersection numbers from the front projection, and we compute the Euler class of the contact structure supported by the open book. Finally, we introduce a notion of Lagrangian projection and compute the classical invariants of a null-homologous Legendrian knot from its projection to a fixed page.

Jointly primitive knots and surgeries between lens spaces

This paper describes a Dehn surgery approach to generating asymmetric hyperbolic manifolds with two distinct lens space fillings. Such manifolds were first identified in work of Dunfield-Hoffman-Licata as the result of a computer search of the SnapPy census, but the current work establishes a topological framework for constructing vastly many more such examples. We introduce the notion of a ``jointly primitive'' presentation of a knot and show that a refined version of this condition ``longitudinally jointly primitive'' is equivalent to being surgery dual to a $(1,2)$--knot in a lens space. This generalizes Berge's equivalence between having a doubly primitive presentation and being surgery dual to a $(1,1)$--knot in a lens space. Through surgery descriptions on a seven-component link in $S^3$, we provide several explicit multi-parameter infinite families of knots in lens spaces with longitudinal jointly primitive presentations and observe among them all the examples previously seen in Dunfield-Hoffman-Licata.

Morse structures on partial open books with extendable monodromy

The first author in recent work with D. Gay developed the notion of a Morse structure on an open book as a tool for studying closed contact 3-manifolds. We extend the notion of Morse structure to extendable partial open books in order to study contact 3-manifolds with convex boundary.

Morse structures on open books

We use parameterized Morse theory on the pages of an open book decomposition to efficiently encode the contact topology in terms of a labelled graph on a disjoint union of tori (one per binding component). This construction allows us to generalize the notion of the front projection of a Legendrian knot from the standard contact $\mathbb{R}^3$ to arbitrary closed contact $3$-manifolds. We describe a complete set of moves on such front diagrams, extending the standard Legendrian Reidemeister moves, and we give a combinatorial formula to compute the Thurston-Bennequin number of a nullhomologous Legendrian knot from its front projection.

Asymmetric hyperbolic L-spaces, Heegaard genus, and Dehn filling

An L-space is a rational homology 3-sphere with minimal Heegaard Floer homology. We give the first examples of hyperbolic L-spaces with no symmetries. In particular, unlike all previously known L-spaces, these manifolds are not double branched covers of links in S^3. We prove the existence of infinitely many such examples (in several distinct families) using a mix of hyperbolic geometry, Floer theory, and verified computer calculations. Of independent interest is our technique for using interval arithmetic to certify symmetry groups and non-existence of isometries of cusped hyperbolic 3-manifolds. In the process, we give examples of 1-cusped hyperbolic 3-manifolds of Heegaard genus 3 with two distinct lens space fillings. These are the first examples where multiple Dehn fillings drop the Heegaard genus by more than one, which answers a question of Gordon.

A dynamical characterization of universally tight lens spaces

We give necessary and sufficient conditions for a closed connected co-orientable contact $3$-manifold $(M,ξ)$ to be a standard lens space based on assumptions on the Reeb flow associated to a defining contact form. Our methods also provide rational global surfaces of section for nondegenerate Reeb flows on $(L(p,q),ξ_{\rm std})$ with prescribed binding orbits.

Heegaard Floer homology of (n,n)-torus links: computations and questions

In this article we study the Heegaard Floer link homology of $(n, n)$-torus links. The Alexander multigradings which support non-trivial homology form a string of $n-1$ unit hypercubes in $\mathbb{R}^{n}$, and we compute the ranks and gradings of the homology in nearly all Alexander gradings. We also conjecture a complete description of the link homology and provide some support for this conjecture. This article is taken from the author's 2007 Ph.D. thesis and contains several open questions.

Rational Seifert Surfaces in Seifert Fibered Spaces

Rationally null-homologous links in Seifert fibered spaces may be represented combinatorially via labeled diagrams. We introduce an additional condition on a labeled link diagram and prove that it is equivalent to the existence of a rational Seifert surface for the link. In the case when this condition is satisfied, we generalize Seifert's algorithm to explicitly construct a rational Seifert surface for any rationally null-homologous knot. As an application of the techniques developed in the paper, we derive closed formulae for the rational Thurston-Bennequin and rotation numbers of a Legendrian knot in a contact Seifert fibered space.

Legendrian Contact Homology in Seifert Fibered Spaces

We define a differential graded algebra associated to Legendrian knots in Seifert fibered spaces with transverse contact structures. This construction is distinguished from other combinatorial realizations of contact homology invariants by the existence of orbifold points in the Reeb orbit space of the contact manifold. These orbifold points are images of the exceptional fibers of the Seifert fibered manifold, and they play a key role in the definitions of the differential and the grading, as well as the proof of invariance. We apply the invariant to distinguish Legendrian knots whose homology is torsion and whose underlying topological knot types are isotopic; such examples exist in any sufficiently complicated contact Seifert fibered space.

Legendrian grid number one knots and augmentations of their differential algebras

In this article we study the differential graded algebra (DGA) invariant associated to Legendrian knots in tight lens spaces. Given a grid number one diagram for a knot in L(p, q), we show how to construct a special Lagrangian diagram suitable for computing the DGA invariant for the Legendrian knot specified by the diagram. We then specialize to L(p, p - 1) and show that for two families of knots, the existence of an augmentation of the DGA depends solely on the value of p.

Invariants for Legendrian knots in lens spaces

In this paper we define invariants for primitive Legendrian knots in lens spaces L(p,q) for q not equal to 1. The main invariant is a differential graded algebra which is computed from a labeled Lagrangian projection of the pair (L(p,q), K). This invariant is formally similar to a DGA defined by Sabloff which is an invariant for Legendrian knots in smooth S^1-bundles over Riemann surfaces. The second invariant defined for knots in lens spaces takes the form of a DGA enhanced with a free cyclic group action and can be computed from the p-fold cover of the pair (L(p,q), K).

Constructing Seifert surfaces from n-bridge link projections

This paper presents a new algorithm "A" for constructing Seifert surfaces from n-bridge projections of links. The algorithm produces minimal complexity surfaces for large classes of braids and alternating links. In addition, we consider a family of knots for which the canonical genus is strictly greater than the genus, (g_c(K) > g(K)), and show that A builds surfaces realizing the knot genus g(K). We also present a generalization of Seifert's algorithm which may be used to construct surfaces representing arbitrary relative second homology classes in a link complement.

The Thurston polytope for four-stranded pretzel links

In this paper we use Heegaard Floer link homology to determine the dual Thurston polytope for pretzel links of the form P(-2r_1-1, 2q_1, -2q_2, 2r_2+1) where r_i and q_i are positive integers. We apply this result to determine the Thurston norms of spanning surfaces for the individual link components, and we explicitly construct norm-realizing examples of such surfaces.
