Spectroscopic Analysis of the 2025 Eclipse of the Symbiotic Binary V1413 Aquilae

We report on a coordinated campaign by amateur astronomers using a combination of high and low resolution spectroscopy to observe the 2025 eclipse of the symbiotic binary V1413 Aql shortly after a probable Z And-type symbiotic outburst. We measured the eclipse time of minimum and computed an updated eclipse ephemeris. Our spectra were calibrated in absolute flux and multi-Gaussian fits were used to resolve and quantify components of the Hα emission line. We measured the radial velocity curve of the white dwarf and determined the semi-amplitude as 25.7 km/s and the systemic radial velocity as 95.1 km/s. We found the spectral continuum was consistent with that of a late F or early G type giant star.

Study of 2021 outburst of the recurrent nova RS Ophiuchi: Photoionization and morpho-kinematic modelling

We present the evolution of the optical spectra of the 2021 outburst of RS Ophiuchi (RS Oph) over about a month after the outburst. The spectral evolution is similar to the previous outbursts. Early spectra show prominent P Cygni profiles of hydrogen Balmer, \ion{Fe}{ii}, and \ion{He}{i} lines. The emission lines were very broad during the initial days, which later became narrower and sharper as the nova evolved. This is interpreted as the expanding shocked material into the winds of the red giant companion. We find that the nova ejecta expanded freely for $\sim 4$ days, and afterward, the shock velocity decreased monotonically with time as $v\propto t^{-0.6}$. The physical and chemical parameters associated with the system are derived using the photoionization code \textsc{cloudy}. The best-fit \textsc{cloudy} model shows the presence of a hot central white dwarf source with a roughly constant luminosity of $\sim$1.00 $\times$ 10$^{37}$ erg s$^{-1}$. The best-fit photoionization models yield absolute abundance values by number, relative to solar of He/H $\sim 1.4 - 1.9$, N/H = $70 - 95$, O/H = $0.60 - 2.60$, and Fe/H $\sim 1.0 - 1.9$ for the ejecta during the first month after the outburst. Nitrogen is found to be heavily overabundant in the ejecta. The ejected hydrogen shell mass of the system is estimated to be in the range of $3.54 - 3.83 \times 10^{-6} M_{\odot}$. The 3D morpho-kinematic modelling shows a bipolar morphology and an inclination angle of $i=30^{\circ}$ for the RS Oph binary system.

Irregular emission cycles in the Oe star HD 60848

We analyse the spectroscopic and photometric variability of the Oe star HD 60848 over the last twenty five years. The spectra reveal recurrent, but irregular cycles of increased circumstellar emission lines. These cycles are highly asymmetric displaying a slow increase over about 6 years, followed by a fast decay within about 6 months. Our analysis focuses on the most recent cycle (2013 - 2020). The equivalent width and velocity separation of the emission peaks indicate variations of the outer disk radius by a factor ~ 2.2, although the variability appears more complex than expected from first principle relations for optically thin Keplerian disks. We observe a time delay between the variations of the strengths of He I 5876 on the one hand and H-alpha and H-beta on the other hand. We interpret this behaviour in a two-step disk growth scenario, where the disk first expands radially before its density increases. A difference in behaviour is also seen between H-alpha and the H I Paschen lines, with the latter displaying a more symmetric cycle, similar to the photometric variability. The rather fast decays of the H-alpha emission observed in 2001, 2009 and 2018 - 2019 suggest that the strong radiation field and early spectral type of the star lead to a faster dissipation of the disk than in later-type Be stars, as theoretically expected. We discuss X-ray observations of the star both during a high and a low-emission state. The X-ray spectrum is soft at both epochs, and the X-ray fluxes are only marginally different and remain consistent with the canonical Lx/Lbol relation of O-type stars. These results indicate that the circumstellar decretion disk of HD 60848 has essentially no impact on the star's X-ray emission, and that the latter most likely arises inside the stellar wind.
