Variations on a Theme of Krylov

Spread complexity uses the distribution of support of a time-evolving state in the Krylov basis to quantify dispersal across accessible dimensions of a Hilbert space. Here, we describe how variations in initial conditions, the Hamiltonian, and the dimension of the Hilbert space affect spread complexity and Krylov basis structure. We introduce Koherence, the entropy of coherence between perturbed and unperturbed Krylov bases, which can, e.g., quantify dynamical amplification of differences in initial conditions in chaos. To illustrate, we show that dynamics on SL(2,R), SU(2), and Heisenberg-Weyl group manifolds, often used as paradigmatic settings for contrasting chaotic and integrable (semi-)classical behavior, display distinctively different responses to variations of the initial state or Hamiltonian. We then describe a lattice model that displays linear growth of spread complexity, saturating for bounded lattices and continuing forever in a thermodynamic limit. The latter example illustrates a breakdown of continuum/classical effective descriptions of complexity growth in bounded quantum systems.

Modular matrices of 2d Carrollian and warped CFTs

We derive the modular S and T matrices that generate the modular transformations on the characters of two dimensional Carrollian and warped CFT algebras. We verify that they satisfy some of their defining properties.

BMS$_3$ fermionic localization

We consider the geometric action formulation for 3d pure gravity with vanishing cosmological constant. We use fermionic localization to compute the exact torus partition function for a constant representative coadjoint orbit of $\widehat{\text{BMS}}_3$. This allows us to discuss its 1-loop exactness.

Spread Complexity Rate as Proper Momentum

We demonstrate a precise relation between the rate of complexity of quantum states excited by local operators in two-dimensional conformal field theories and the radial momentum of particles in 3-dimensional Anti-de Sitter spacetimes. Similar relations have been anticipated based on qualitative models for operator growth. Here, we make this correspondence sharp with two key ingredients: the precise definition of quantum complexity given by the spread complexity of states, and the match of its growth rate to the bulk momentum measured in the proper radial distance coordinate.

A proposal for 3d quantum gravity and its bulk factorization

Recent progress in AdS/CFT has provided a good understanding of how the bulk spacetime is encoded in the entanglement structure of the boundary CFT. However, little is known about how spacetime emerges directly from the bulk quantum theory. We address this question in an effective 3d quantum theory of pure gravity, which describes the high temperature regime of a holographic CFT. This theory can be viewed as a $q$-deformation and dimensional uplift of JT gravity. Using this model, we show that the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of a two-sided black hole equals the bulk entanglement entropy of gravitational edge modes. In the conventional Chern-Simons description, these black holes correspond to Wilson lines in representations of $\PSL(2,\mathbb{R})\otimes \PSL(2,\mathbb{R}) $. We show that the correct calculation of gravitational entropy suggests we should interpret the bulk theory as an extended topological quantum field theory associated to the quantum semi-group $\SL^+_{q}(2,\mathbb{R})\otimes \SL^+_{q}(2,\mathbb{R})$. Our calculation suggests an effective description of bulk microstates in terms of collective, anyonic degrees of freedom whose entanglement leads to the emergence of the bulk spacetime.

Gravitational perturbations from NHEK to Kerr

We revisit the spectrum of linear axisymmetric gravitational perturbations of the (near-)extreme Kerr black hole. Our aim is to characterise those perturbations that are responsible for the deviations away from extremality, and to contrast them with the linearized perturbations treated in the Newman-Penrose formalism. For the near horizon region of the (near-)extreme Kerr solution, i.e. the (near-)NHEK background, we provide a complete characterisation of axisymmetric modes. This involves an infinite tower of propagating modes together with the much subtler low-lying mode sectors that contain the deformations driving the black hole away from extremality. Our analysis includes their effects on the line element, their contributions to Iyer-Wald charges around the NHEK geometry, and how to reconstitute them as gravitational perturbations on Kerr. We present in detail how regularity conditions along the angular variables modify the dynamical properties of the low-lying sector, and in particular their role in the new developments of nearly-AdS$_2$ holography.

Constraining the spin parameter of near-extremal black holes using LISA

We describe a model that generates first order adiabatic EMRI waveforms for quasi-circular equatorial inspirals of compact objects into rapidly rotating (near-extremal) black holes. Using our model, we show that LISA could measure the spin parameter of near-extremal black holes (for $a \gtrsim 0.9999$) with extraordinary precision, $\sim$ 3-4 orders of magnitude better than for moderate spins, $a \sim 0.9$. Such spin measurements would be one of the tightest measurements of an astrophysical parameter within a gravitational wave context. Our results are primarily based off a Fisher matrix analysis, but are verified using both frequentest and Bayesian techniques. We present analytical arguments that explain these high spin precision measurements. The high precision arises from the spin dependence of the radial inspiral evolution, which is dominated by geodesic properties of the secondary orbit, rather than radiation reaction. High precision measurements are only possible if we observe the exponential damping of the signal that is characteristic of the near-horizon regime of near-extremal inspirals. Our results demonstrate that, if such black holes exist, LISA would be able to successfully identify rapidly rotating black holes up to $a = 1-10^{-9}$ , far past the Thorne limit of $a = 0.998$.

Aspects of The First Law of Complexity

We investigate the first law of complexity proposed in arXiv:1903.04511, i.e., the variation of complexity when the target state is perturbed, in more detail. Based on Nielsen's geometric approach to quantum circuit complexity, we find the variation only depends on the end of the optimal circuit. We apply the first law to gain new insights into the quantum circuits and complexity models underlying holographic complexity. In particular, we examine the variation of the holographic complexity for both the complexity=action and complexity=volume conjectures in perturbing the AdS vacuum with coherent state excitations of a free scalar field. We also examine the variations of circuit complexity produced by the same excitations for the free scalar field theory in a fixed AdS background. In this case, our work extends the existing treatment of Gaussian coherent states to properly include the time dependence of the complexity variation. We comment on the similarities and differences of the holographic and QFT results.

The First Law of Complexity

We investigate the variation of holographic complexity for two nearby target states. Based on Nielsen's geometric approach, we find the variation only depends on the end point of the optimal trajectory, a result which we designate the first law of complexity. As an example, we examine the complexity=action conjecture when the AdS vacuum is perturbed by a scalar field excitation, which corresponds to a coherent state. Remarkably, the gravitational contributions completely cancel and the final variation reduces to a boundary term coming entirely from the scalar field action. Hence the null boundary of Wheeler-DeWitt patch appears to act like the "end of the quantum circuit".

Transition from Inspiral to Plunge: A Complete Near-Extremal Trajectory and Associated Waveform

We extend the Ori and Thorne (OT) procedure to compute the transition from an adiabatic inspiral into a geodesic plunge for any spin, with emphasis on near-extremal ones. Our analysis revisits the validity of the approximations made in OT. In particular, we discuss possible effects coming from eccentricity and non-geodesic past-history of the orbital evolution. We find three different scaling regimes according to whether the mass ratio is much smaller, of the same order or much larger than the near extremal parameter describing how fast the primary black hole rotates. Eccentricity and non-geodesic past-history corrections are always sub-leading, indicating that the quasi-circular approximation applies throughout the transition regime. However, we show that the OT assumption that the energy and angular momentum evolve linearly with proper time must be modified in the near-extremal regime. Using our transition equations, we describe an algorithm to compute the full worldline in proper time for an extreme mass ratio inspiral (EMRI) and the resultant gravitational waveform in the high spin limit.

Comments on the Random Thirring Model

The Thirring model with random couplings is a translationally invariant generalisation of the SYK model to 1+1 dimensions, which is tractable in the large N limit. We compute its two point function, at large distances, for any strength of the random coupling. For a given realisation, the couplings contain both irrelevant and relevant marginal operators, but statistically, in the large N limit, the random couplings are overall always marginally irrelevant, in sharp distinction to the usual Thirring model. We show the leading term to the $β$ function in conformal perturbation theory, which is quadratic in the couplings, vanishes, while its usually subleading cubic term matches our RG flow.

Higher Dimensional Generalizations of the SYK Model

We discuss a 1+1 dimensional generalization of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model. The model contains $N$ Majorana fermions at each lattice site with a nearest-neighbour hopping term. The SYK random interaction is restricted to low momentum fermions of definite chirality within each lattice site. This gives rise to an ordinary 1+1 field theory above some energy scale and a low energy SYK-like behavior. We exhibit a class of low-pass filters which give rise to a rich variety of hyperscaling behaviour in the IR. We also discuss another set of generalizations which describes probing an SYK system with an external fermion, together with the new scaling behavior they exhibit in the IR.

Scrambling time from local perturbations of the eternal BTZ black hole

We compute the mutual information between finite intervals in two non-compact 2d CFTs in the thermofield double formulation after one of them has been locally perturbed by a primary operator at some time $t_ω$ in the large $c$ limit. We determine the time scale, called the scrambling time, at which the mutual information vanishes and the original entanglement between the thermofield double gets destroyed by the perturbation. We provide a holographic description in terms of a free falling particle in the eternal BTZ black hole that exactly matches our CFT calculations. Our results hold for any time $t_ω$. In particular, when the latter is large, they reproduce the bulk shock-wave propagation along the BTZ horizon description.

Calabi-Yau Manifolds with Large Volume Vacua

We describe an efficient, construction independent, algorithmic test to determine whether Calabi--Yau threefolds admit a structure compatible with the Large Volume moduli stabilization scenario of type IIB superstring theory. Using the algorithm, we scan complete intersection and toric hypersurface Calabi-Yau threefolds with $2 \leq h^{1,1} \le 4$ and deduce that 418 among 4434 manifolds have a Large Volume Limit with a single large four-cycle. We describe major extensions to this survey, which are currently underway.

Helical Luttinger Liquids and Three Dimensional Black Holes

Cold interacting fermions in two dimensions form exactly solvable Luttinger liquids, whose characteristic scaling exponents differ from those of conventional Fermi liquids. We use the AdS/CFT correspondence to discuss an equivalence between a class of helical, strongly coupled Luttinger liquids and fermions propagating in the background of a 3D black hole. The microscopic Lagrangian is explicitly known and the construction is fully embeddable in string theory. The retarded Green function at low temperature and energy arises from the geometry very near the black hole horizon. This structure is universal for all cold, charged liquids with a dual description in gravity.

On the maximal superalgebras of supersymmetric backgrounds

In this note we give a precise definition of the notion of a maximal superalgebra of certain types of supersymmetric supergravity backgrounds, including the Freund-Rubin backgrounds, and propose a geometric construction extending the well-known construction of its Killing superalgebra. We determine the structure of maximal Lie superalgebras and show that there is a finite number of isomorphism classes, all related via contractions from an orthosymplectic Lie superalgebra. We use the structure theory to show that maximally supersymmetric waves do not possess such a maximal superalgebra, but that the maximally supersymmetric Freund-Rubin backgrounds do. We perform the explicit geometric construction of the maximal superalgebra of AdS_4 x S^7 and find that is isomorphic to osp(1|32). We propose an algebraic construction of the maximal superalgebra of any background asymptotic to AdS_4 x S^7 and we test this proposal by computing the maximal superalgebra of the M2-brane in its two maximally supersymmetric limits, finding agreement.

The Library of Babel

We show that heavy pure states of gravity can appear to be mixed states to almost all probes. Our arguments are made for $\rm{AdS}_5$ Schwarzschild black holes using the field theory dual to string theory in such spacetimes. Our results follow from applying information theoretic notions to field theory operators capable of describing very heavy states in gravity. For certain supersymmetric states of the theory, our account is exact: the microstates are described in gravity by a spacetime ``foam'', the precise details of which are invisible to almost all probes.

Supersymmetric Kerr--anti-deSitter solutions

We prove the existence of one quarter supersymmetric type IIB configurations that arise as non-trivial scaling solutions of the standard five dimensional Kerr-AdS black holes by the explicit construction of its Killing spinors. This neutral, spinning solution is asymptotic to the static anti-deSitter space-time with cosmological constant $-\textstyle{\frac{1}{\ell^2}}$, it has two finite equal angular momenta $J_1=\pm J_2$, mass $M=\textstyle{\frac{1}{\ell}} (|J_1|+|J_2|)$ and a naked singularity. We also address the scaling limit associated with one half supersymmetric solution with only one angular momentum.
