Extraction of alpha_s from radiative Upsilon(1S) decays

We improve on a recent determination of alpha_s from Gamma(Upsilon(1S)-->X gamma)/Gamma(Upsilon(1S)-->X) with CLEO data by taking into account color octet contributions and avoiding any model dependence in the extraction. We obtain alpha_s(M_Upsilon(1S))= 0.184+0.015-0.014, which corresponds to alpha_s(M_Z)=0.119+0.006-0.005.

The logarithmic contribution to the QCD static energy at NNNNLO

Using pNRQCD and known results for the field strength correlator, we calculate the ultrasoft contribution to the QCD static energy of a quark-antiquark pair at short distances at NNNNLO in alpha_s. At the same order, this provides the logarithmic terms of the singlet static potential in pNRQCD and the log alpha_s terms of the static energy.

Inclusive radiative decays of charmonium

We discuss the theoretical status of inclusive radiative decays of charmonium, with a particular emphasis on the QCD description of the photon spectrum, where progress has occurred in recent years. We also comment on the possible extraction of alpha_s (M_J/psi) and on the possibility to gain important information on the nature of J/psi and psi (2S).

Radiative decays and the nature of heavy quarkonia

We argue that the photon spectra in radiative decays of various heavy quarkonium states provide important information on their nature. If two of these states are in the strong coupling regime, we are able to produce a parameter-free model independent formula, which holds at next-to-leading order and includes both direct and fragmentation contributions. When the formula is checked against recent CLEO data it favors Upsilon (2S) and Upsilon (3S) in the strong coupling regime and disfavors Upsilon (1S) in it.

Semi-inclusive radiative decays of Upsilon 1S

We discuss in detail the photon spectrum of radiative Upsilon 1S decays taking into account a number of results that have recently appeared in the literature. In particular, we show how to consistently combine expressions which are valid in the upper end-point region, where NRQCD factorization breaks down, with those of the central region, where NRQCD factorization holds. An excellent description of data is achieved, but theoretical errors are large.

Effective field theories for heavy quarkonium

We review recent theoretical developments in heavy quarkonium physics from the point of view of Effective Field Theories of QCD. We discuss Non-Relativistic QCD and concentrate on potential Non-Relativistic QCD. Our main goal will be to derive QCD Schrödinger-like equations that govern the heavy quarkonium physics in the weak and strong coupling regime. We also discuss a selected set of applications, which include spectroscopy, inclusive decays and electromagnetic threshold production.

Model Independent Results for Heavy Quarkonium

We review a number of results for the spectrum and inclusive decays of heavy quarkonium systems which can be derived from QCD under well controlled approximations. They essentially follow from the hierarchy of scales in these systems, which can be efficiently exploited using non-relativistic effective field theories. In particular, we discuss under which conditions non-relativistic potential models emerge as effective theories of QCD.

Soft, collinear and non-relativistic modes in radiative decays of very heavy quarkonium

We analyze the end-point region of the photon spectrum in semi-inclusive radiative decays of very heavy quarkonium (m alpha_s^2 >> Lambda_QCD). We discuss the interplay of the scales arising in the Soft-Collinear Effective Theory, m, m(1-z)^{1/2} and m(1-z) for z close to 1, with the scales of heavy quarkonium systems in the weak coupling regime, m, m alpha_s and m alpha_s^2. For 1-z \sim alpha_s^2 only collinear and (ultra)soft modes are seen to be relevant, but the recently discovered soft-collinear modes show up for 1-z << alpha_s^2. The S- and P-wave octet shape functions are calculated. When they are included in the analysis of the photon spectrum of the Upsilon (1S) system, the agreement with data in the end-point region becomes excellent. The NRQCD matrix elements <1^3S_1| O_8(^1S_0) | 1^3S_1> and <1^3S_1| O_8(^3P_J) | 1^3S_1> are also obtained.

Heavy Quarks: Effective Theories, Lattice and Models

Heavy-light mesons, heavy quarkonium and doubly heavy baryons are briefly discussed. Effective field theories (EFTs) of QCD based on the heavy quark mass expansion 1/m_Q provide a unified framework to describe all three systems. They produce a number of model-independent results and simplify non-perturbative (lattice) calculations. Nevertheless, models are still very useful to obtain inexpensive estimates of many observables. It is emphasized that certain models can be accommodated in the EFT framework, like non-relativistic potential models for heavy quarkonium. It is also outlined how to build a suitable EFT for doubly heavy baryons which might also accommodate existing models for these systems. Finally, a few lattice calculations which are badly needed as inputs for EFTs are pointed out.

Incompressible States in Double Quantum Dots

Incompressible (magic) states of vertically coupled quantum dots submitted to strong magnetic fields such that only the lowest Landau level is relevant are studied within an exact diagonalization calculation for N=3, 5 and 6, electrons. We find that the sequences of total angular momentum M for which incompressible states exists depend on the interplay between the inter-dot hopping parameter Δ_t and the inter-dot distance d. For d of the order of the magnetic length and for all values of Δ_t, we conclude that, in contrast to previous claims, the incompressible states appear at magic values of M which do not differ from those obtained for a single dot, namely M=N(N-1)/2+jN where j is a positive integer number. For large inter-dot distance and simultaneously small inter-dot hopping parameter, new sequences of magic values of $M$ are observed. These new sequences can be easily understood in terms of a transition regime towards a system of two decoupled single dots. However, important differences in the nature of the incompressible ground states are found with respect to those of a single dot.

Low energy excitations of double quantum dots in the lowest Landau level regime

We study the spectrum and magnetic properties of double quantum dots in the lowest Landau level for different values of the hopping and Zeeman parameters by means of exact diagonalization techniques in systems of N=6 and N=7 electrons and filling factor close to 2. We compare our results with those obtained in double quantum layers and single quantum dots. The Kohn theorem is also discussed.

Inclusive Decays of Heavy Quarkonium to Light Particles

We derive the imaginary part of the potential NRQCD Hamiltonian up to order 1/m^4, when the typical momentum transfer between the heavy quarks is of the order of Lambda_{QCD} or greater, and the binding energy E much smaller than Lambda_{QCD}. We use this result to calculate the inclusive decay widths into light hadrons, photons and lepton pairs, up to O(mv^3 x (Lambda_{QCD}^2/m^2,E/m)) and O(mv^5) times a short-distance coefficient, for S- and P-wave heavy quarkonium states, respectively. We achieve a large reduction in the number of unknown non-perturbative parameters and, therefore, we obtain new model-independent QCD predictions. All the NRQCD matrix elements relevant to that order are expressed in terms of the wave functions at the origin and six universal non-perturbative parameters. The wave-function dependence factorizes and drops out in the ratio of hadronic and electromagnetic decay widths. The universal non-perturbative parameters are expressed in terms of gluonic field-strength correlators, which may be fixed by experimental data or, alternatively, by lattice simulations. Our expressions are expected to hold for most of the charmonium and bottomonium states below threshold. The calculations and methodology are explained in detail so that the evaluation of higher order NRQCD matrix elements in this framework should be straightforward. An example is provided.

Renormalizing the Lippmann-Schwinger equation for the one pion exchange potential

We address the question whether the cut-off dependence, which has to be introduced in order to properly define the Lippmann-Schwinger equation for the one pion exchange potential plus local (delta-function) potentials, can be removed (up to inverse powers of it) by a suitable tuning of the various (bare) coupling constants. We prove that this is indeed so both for the spin singlet and for the spin triplet channels. However, the latter requires such a strong cut-off dependence of the coupling constant associated to the non-local term which breaks orbital angular momentum conservation, that the renormalized amplitude lacks from partial wave mixing. We argue that this is an indication that this term must be treated perturbatively.

The Renormalization Group Improvement of the QCD Static Potentials

We resum the leading ultrasoft logs of the singlet and octet static QCD potentials within potential NRQCD. We then obtain the complete three-loop renormalization group improvement of the singlet QCD static potential. The discrepancies between the perturbative evaluation and the lattice results at short distances are slightly reduced.

Light Fermion Finite Mass Effects in Non-relativistic Bound States

We present analytic expressions for the vacuum polarization effects due to a light fermion with finite mass in the binding energy and in the wave function at the origin of QED and (weak coupling) QCD non-relativistic bound states. Applications to exotic atoms, Υ(1s) and t\bar{t} production near threshold are briefly discussed.

The renormalization group for correlated scales: one-stage versus two-stage running

Nonrelativistic bound states have two low energy scales, a soft scale mu_S of order mv and an ultrasoft scale mu_U of order mv^2. In two-stage running, the soft and ultrasoft scales are lowered from m to mv, and then the ultrasoft scale is lowered from mv to mv^2. In one-stage running, the two scales are lowered in a correlated way using a subtraction velocity. We compare these two methods of summing logarithms and show that only the correlated running in velocity space of the one-stage method correctly reproduces the logarithms in non-relativistic bound states in QED. The argument for one-stage running is general, and should apply to any system with correlated scales.

Field Theoretical Approach To Quantum Hall Ferromagnets

We present a quantum field theoretical analysis of a $ν= 1$ quantum Hall system when the effective Landé $g$ factor is small. We clearly demonstrate that the ground state of the system is ferromagnetic. We note that it is the short range component of the Coulomb interaction which is instrumental in aligning the spins. We then go on to derive the effective lagrangian for the lowest lying spin excitations. At the leading order, apart from the usual O(3) sigma model terms, we find a term proportional to the Pontryagin density and a long range Coulomb interaction term between these densities. Beyond the leading order in the derivative expansion, we find an interesting Chern-Simons term constructed out of the basic spin variables. For low enough energies, however, we notice that the effects of mixing of higher Landau levels is more important than the next to leading terms in the derivative expansion. We provide a systematic way of calculating these corrections.

Multiple Edges of a Quantum Hall System in a Strong Electric Field

In this article we show that if the electrons in a quantum Hall sample are subjected to a constant electric field in the plane of the material, comparable in magnitude to the background magnetic field on the system of electrons, a multiplicity of edge states localised in different regions of space is produced in the sample. The actions governing the dynamics of these edge states are obtained starting from the well-known Schrödinger field theory for a system of non-relativistic electrons, where on top of the constant background electric and magnetic fields, the electrons are further subject to slowly varying weak electromagnetic fields. In the regions between the edges, dubbed as the "bulk", the fermions can be integrated out entirely and the dynamics expressed in terms of a local effective action involving the slowly varying electromagnetic potentials. It is further shown how the "bulk" action is gauge non-invariant in a particular way and how the edge states conspire to restore the U(1) electromagnetic gauge invariance of the system.
