Global dynamics and regime shifts in a resource-consumer model with facilitation and habitat loss

Modelling how populations respond to habitat loss is crucial for understanding ecosystem stability, especially when positive interactions among resource species, such as plant-plant facilitation, play a key role. Habitat loss not only reduces available organic nutrients and space for primary producers but also disrupts the positive feedbacks that sustain resource populations, thereby affecting consumer persistence and the overall system's stability. We analyse a cubic planar model describing resource-consumer dynamics with facilitation under progressive habitat loss. Our study characterizes the parameter space and enumerates all the phase portraits within the Poincaré disk under ecologically relevant conditions. We show that the system has a unique stable limit cycle and characterize analytically the heteroclinic bifurcation curve involving the collapse of the resource and the consumer, enabling us to determine how the parameter region sustaining coexistence oscillations narrows under habitat destruction. To further explore these dynamics, we construct a piecewise-linear (PWL) approximation that preserves the system's qualitative behaviour, allowing us to obtain an explicit expression for the heteroclinic bifurcation. Finally, we investigate how extrinsic noise affecting the resource species impacts the overall dynamics, showing that stochasticity can anticipate the onset of the heteroclinic bifurcation causing earlier co-extinctions.

Limit Cycles in Piecewise Quadratic Kolmogorov Systems

We study planar piecewise quadratic differential systems of Kolmogorov type. Specifically, we consider systems with both coordinate axes invariant and with a separation line that is straight and distinct from the invariant axes. The main results concern two different aspects. First, the center problem is solved for certain subclasses. Second, using this classification, the bifurcation of limit cycles of crossing type is investigated. We contrast the nature of Hopf-type bifurcations in smooth and piecewise smooth settings, particularly regarding the bifurcation of limit cycles of small amplitude. The classical pseudo-Hopf bifurcation is analyzed in the Kolmogorov systems class. It is worth highlighting that, in contrast to the smooth Kolmogorov quadratic systems, which have no limit cycles, the piecewise case exhibits at least six. Furthermore, we show that the maximal weak focus order, eight, does not necessarily yield the maximal number of small-amplitude limit cycles.

Local and Global Analysis of the Displacement Map Some Near Integrable Systems

In this paper, we introduce an alternative method for applying averaging theory of orders $1$ and $2$ in the plane. This is done by combining Taylor expansions of the displacement map with the integral form of the Poincaré--Poyntriagin--Melnikov function. It is known that, to obtain results of order $2$ with averaging theory, the first-order averaging function should be identically zero. However, when working with Taylor expansions of the $i$th-order averaging function, we usually cannot guarantee it is identically zero. We prove that the vanishing of certain coefficients of the Taylor series of the first-order averaging function ensures it is identically zero. We present our reasoning in several concrete examples: a quadratic Lotka--Volterra system, a quadratic Hamiltonian system, the entire family of quadratic isochronous differential systems, and a cubic system. For the latter, we also show that a previous analysis contained in the literature is not correct. In none of the examples is it necessary to precisely calculate the averaging functions.

Weak-Coppel problem for a class of Riccati differential equations

We study the $T$-periodic solutions of the real Riccati differential equation $x' = x^2 + γ(t),$ where $x=x(t)$ and $γ$ is a $T$-periodic function. Our goal is to define a real-valued discriminant $Δ_γ$ that determines whether the equation admits two, one, or no $T$-periodic solutions, in analogy with the classical discriminant of the quadratic algebraic equations. This problem is closely related to a question posed by Coppel concerning the characterization of bifurcation curves for planar quadratic differential systems. Although our result does not cover all periodic Riccati differential equations, many of them can be transformed into this particular form.

On the number of limit cycles in piecewise planar quadratic differential systems

We consider piecewise quadratic perturbations of centers of piecewise quadratic systems in two zones determined by a straight line through the origin. By means of expansions of the displacement map, we are able to find isolated zeros of it, without dealing with the unsurprising difficult integrals inherent in the usual averaging approach. We apply our technique to non-smooth perturbations of the four families of isochronous centers of the Loud family, $S_1$, $S_2$, $S_3$, and $S_4$, as well as to non-smooth perturbations of non-smooth centers given by putting different $S_i$'s in each zone. To show the coverage of our approach, we apply its first order, which recovers the averaging method of the first order, in perturbations of the already mentioned centers considering all the straight lines through the origin. Then we apply its second order to perturbations of the above centers for a specific oblique straight line. Here in order to argue we introduce certain blow-ups in the perturbative parameters. As a consequence of our study, we obtain examples of piecewise quadratic systems with at least $12$ limit cycles. By analyzing two previous works of the literature claiming much more limit cycles we found some mistakes in the calculations. Therefore, the best lower bound for the number of limit cycles of a piecewise quadratic system is up to now the $12$ limit cycles found in the present paper.

Time-reversibility and integrability of p:-q resonant vector fields

We study local analytical integrability in a neighborhood of $p:-q$ resonant singular point of a two-dimensional vector field and its connection to time-reversibility with respect to the non-smooth involution $ φ(x,y)=(y^{p/q},x^{q/p}). $ Some generalizations of the theory developed by K.~S.~Sibirsky for $1:-1$ resonant case to the $p:-q$ resonant case are presented.

Bifurcation of limit cycles in piecewise quadratic differential systems with an invariant straight line

We solve the center-focus problem in a class of piecewise quadratic polynomial differential systems with an invariant straight line. The separation curve is also a straight line which is not invariant. We provide families having at the origin a weak-foci of maximal order. In the continuous class, the cyclicity problem is also solved, being $3$ such maximal number. Moreover, for the discontinuous class but without sliding segment, we prove the existence of $7$ limit cycles of small amplitude.

Limit cycles from a monodromic infinity in planar piecewise linear systems

Planar piecewise linear systems with two linearity zones separated by a straight line and with a periodic orbit at infinity are considered. By using some changes of variables and parameters, a reduced canonical form with five parameters is obtained. Instead of the usual Bendixson transformation to work near infinity, a more direct approach is introduced by taking suitable coordinates for the crossing points of the possible periodic orbits with the separation straight line. The required computations to characterize the stability and bifurcations of the periodic orbit at infinity are much easier. It is shown that the Hopf bifurcation at infinity can have degeneracies of co-dimension three and, in particular, up to three limit cycles can bifurcate from the periodic orbit at infinity. This provides a new mechanism to explain the claimed maximum number of limit cycles in this family of systems. The centers at infinity classification together with the limit cycles bifurcating from them are also analyzed.

New lower bound for the Hilbert number in piecewise quadratic differential systems

We study the number of limit cycles bifurcating from a piecewise quadratic system. All the differential systems considered are piecewise in two zones separated by a straight line. We prove the existence of 16 crossing limit cycles in this class of systems. If we denote by $H_p(n)$ the extension of the Hilbert number to degree $n$ piecewise polynomial differential systems, then $H_p(2)\geq 16.$ As fas as we are concerned, this is the best lower bound for the quadratic class. Moreover, all the limit cycles appear in one nest bifurcating from the period annulus of some isochronous quadratic centers.

The number of polynomial solutions of polynomial Riccati equations

Consider real or complex polynomial Riccati differential equations $a(x) \dot y=b_0(x)+b_1(x)y+b_2(x)y^2$ with all the involved functions being polynomials of degree at most $η$. We prove that the maximum number of polynomial solutions is $η+1$ (resp. 2) when $η\ge 1$ (resp. $η=0$) and that these bounds are sharp. For real trigonometric polynomial Riccati differential equations with all the functions being trigonometric polynomials of degree at most $η\ge 1$ we prove a similar result. In this case, the maximum number of trigonometric polynomial solutions is $2η$ (resp. $3$) when $η\ge 2$ (resp. $η=1$) and, again, these bounds are sharp. Although the proof of both results has the same starting point, the classical result that asserts that the cross ratio of four different solutions of a Riccati differential equation is constant, the trigonometric case is much more involved. The main reason is that the ring of trigonometric polynomials is not a unique factorization domain.

A proof of Perko's conjectures for the Bogdanov-Takens system

The Bogdanov-Takens system has at most one limit cycle and, in the parameter space, it exists between a Hopf and a saddle-loop bifurcation curves. The aim of this paper is to prove the Perko's conjectures about some analytic properties of the saddle-loop bifurcation curve. Moreover, we provide sharp piecewise algebraic upper and lower bounds for this curve.

Explicit upper and lower bounds for the traveling wave solutions of Fisher-Kolmogorov type equations

It is well-known that the existence of traveling wave solutions for reaction-diffusion partial differential equations can be proved by showing the existence of certain heteroclinic orbits for related autonomous planar differential equations. We introduce a method for finding explicit upper and lower bounds of these heteroclinic orbits. In particular, for the classical Fisher-Kolmogorov equation we give rational upper and lower bounds which allow to locate these solutions analytically and with very high accuracy.

Upper bounds for the number of zeroes for some Abelian integrals

Consider the vector field $x'= -yG(x, y), y'=xG(x, y),$ where the set of critical points $\{G(x, y) = 0\}$ is formed by $K$ straight lines, not passing through the origin and parallel to one or two orthogonal directions. We perturb it with a general polynomial perturbation of degree $n$ and study which is the maximum number of limit cycles that can bifurcate from the period annulus of the origin in terms of $K$ and $n.$ Our approach is based on the explicit computation of the Abelian integral that controls the bifurcation and in a new result for bounding the number of zeroes of a certain family of real functions. When we apply our results for $K\le4$ we recover or improve some results obtained in several previous works.

Some results on homoclinic and heteroclinic connections in planar systems

Consider a family of planar systems depending on two parameters $(n,b)$ and having at most one limit cycle. Assume that the limit cycle disappears at some homoclinic (or heteroclinic) connection when $Φ(n,b)=0.$ We present a method that allows to obtain a sequence of explicit algebraic lower and upper bounds for the bifurcation set ${Φ(n,b)=0}.$ The method is applied to two quadratic families, one of them is the well-known Bogdanov-Takens system. One of the results that we obtain for this system is the bifurcation curve for small values of $n$, given by $b=\frac5 7 n^{1/2}+{72/2401}n- {30024/45294865}n^{3/2}- {2352961656/11108339166925} n^2+O(n^{5/2})$. We obtain the new three terms from purely algebraic calculations, without evaluating Melnikov functions.

Explicit non-algebraic limit cycles for polynomial systems

We consider a system of the form x'=P_n(x,y)+xR_m(x,y), y'=Q_n(x,y)+yR_m(x,y), where P_n(x,y), Q_n(x,y) and R_m(x,y) are homogeneous polynomials of degrees n, n and m, respectively, with n<=m. We prove that this system has at most one limit cycle and that when it exists it can be explicitly found. Then we study a particular case, with n=3 and m=4. We prove that this quintic polynomial system has an explicit limit cycle which is not algebraic. To our knowledge, there are no such type of examples in the literature. The method that we introduce to prove that this limit cycle is not algebraic can be also used to detect algebraic solutions for other families of polynomial vector fields or for probing the absence of such type of solutions.
