Range and Bearing Data Fusion for Precise Convex Network Localization

Hybrid localization in GNSS-challenged environments using measured ranges and angles is becoming increasingly popular, in particular with the advent of multimodal communication systems. Here, we address the hybrid network localization problem using ranges and bearings to jointly determine the positions of a number of agents through a single maximum-likelihood (ML) optimization problem that seamlessly fuses all the available pairwise range and angle measurements. We propose a tight convex surrogate to the ML estimator, we examine practical measures for the accuracy of the relaxation, and we comprehensively characterize its behavior in simulation. We found that our relaxation outperforms a state of the art SDP relaxation by one order of magnitude in terms of localization error, and is amenable to much more lightweight solution algorithms.

Siegel Paramodular Forms and Sparseness in AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$

We discuss the application of Siegel paramodular forms to the counting of polar states in symmetric product orbifold CFTs. We present five special examples and provide exact analytic counting formulas for their polar states. The first example reproduces the known result for type IIB supergravity on AdS$_3\times S^3\times K3$, whereas the other four examples give new counting formulas. Their crucial feature is that the low energy spectrum is very sparse, which suggests the existence of a suitable dual supergravity theory. These examples open a path to novel realizations of AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$.

U-duality Invariant Quantum Entropy from Sums of Kloosterman Sums

U-duality plays a special role in the study of the microscopic degrees of freedom of supersymmetric black holes. To be consistent with duality, the black hole quantum degeneracy must obey special arithmetic properties, which are non-perturbative in nature. In this work, we study these properties from a holographic point of view, establishing a connection between arithmetic properties of Kloosterman sums and quantum gravity in $\text{AdS}_2$ space. To this end, we consider the entropy of black holes that carry non-primitive charges, in both $\mathcal{N}=8$ and $\mathcal{N}=4$ four dimensional compactifications; our analysis includes all the perturbative and non-perturbative bulk quantum corrections. The key result relies on special arithmetic properties of generalized Kloosterman sums that we develop. These are a generalization of the known Selberg identity of classical Kloosterman sums. In both the $\mathcal{N}=8$ and $\mathcal{N}=4$ examples, we recover, from the bulk quantum gravity, the non-primitive answer which is a sum over the primitive degeneracies, depending non-trivially on the discrete duality invariants. In particular, for the $\mathcal{N}=4$ case we show that the quantum gravity answer reproduces the dependence on the torsion invariant $I=\text{gcd}(Q\wedge P)$, in agreement with the microscopic formulas. For the $\mathcal{N}=8$ case, we solve a puzzle related to U-duality invariance of the supergravity answer and the corresponding one-eighth BPS degeneracy.

Exact holography and black hole entropy in N=8 and N=4 string theory

We compute the exact entropy of one-eighth and one-quarter BPS black holes in N=8 and N=4 string theory respectively. This includes all the N=4 CHL models in both K3 and T^4 compactifications. The main result is a measure for the finite dimensional integral that one obtains after localization of supergravity on AdS_2xS^2. This measure is determined entirely by an anomaly in supersymmetric Chern-Simons theory on local AdS_3 and takes into account the contribution from all the supergravity multiplets. In Chern-Simons theory on compact manifolds this is the anomaly that computes a certain one-loop dependence on the volume of the manifold. For one-eighth BPS black holes our results are a first principles derivation of a measure proposed in arXiv:1111.1161, while in the case of one-quarter BPS black holes our result computes exactly all the perturbative or area corrections. Moreover, we argue that instantonic contributions can be incorporated and give evidence by computing the measure which matches precisely the microscopics. Along with this, we find an unitary condition that truncates the answer to a finite sum of instantons in perfect agreement with a microscopic formula. Our results solve a number of puzzles related to localization in supergravity and constitute a larger number of examples where holography can be shown to hold exactly.

Generalized Kloosterman Sums from M2-branes

Kloosterman sums play a special role in analytic number theory, for expressing the integer Fourier coefficients of modular forms as an infinite sum of Bessel functions, also known as Rademacher formula. The generalization to vector-valued modular forms is known as generalized Kloosterman sums. In the paper arxiv:1404.0033, a remarkable connection between these arithmetic sums and quantum black hole entropy was found. Nevertheless, the computation was particular for one-eighth BPS black holes in $\mathcal{N}=8$ string theory, which have a simple counting formula. Here, we review this construction and extend it to the case of one-quarter BPS black holes in $\mathcal{N}=4$ string theory, which are counted by (mock) Jacobi forms of arbitrary index. The main result is an holographic derivation of the Kloosterman sums which includes the intricate sum over phases and depends exactly on the spectral flow sectors and the spectrum of polar states. On the microscopic side we derive an analytic formula for the Kloosterman sums valid for any index, whereas from the macroscopic side we reproduce the same formula from the M-theory path integral on $\mathbb{Z}_c$ orbifolds of $AdS_2\times S^1$. A key aspect of the derivation is the identification of the spectral flow sectors with the contribution of M2 branes wrapping cycles on the compactification manifold. After a careful treatment of the measure, the sum over orbifolds results in the sum over Bessels, in perfect agreement with the Rademacher expansion at any order in perturbation theory.

Quantum Black Hole Entropy, Localization and the Stringy Exclusion Principle

Supersymmetric localization has lead to remarkable progress in computing quantum corrections to BPS black hole entropy. The program has been successful especially for computing perturbative corrections to the Bekenstein-Hawking area formula. In this work, we consider non-perturbative corrections related to polar states in the Rademacher expansion, which describes the entropy in the microcanonical ensemble. We propose that these non-perturbative effects can be identified with a new family of saddles in the localization of the quantum entropy path integral. We argue that these saddles, which are euclidean $AdS_2\times S^1\times S^2$ geometries, arise after turning on singular fluxes in M-theory on a Calabi-Yau. They cease to exist after a certain amount of flux, resulting in a finite number of geometries; the bound on that number is in precise agreement with the stringy exclusion principle. Localization of supergravity on these backgrounds gives rise to a finite tail of Bessel functions in agreement with the Rademacher expansion. As a check of our proposal, we test our results against well-known microscopic formulas for one-eighth and one-quarter BPS black holes in $\mathcal{N}=8$ and $\mathcal{N}=4$ string theory respectively, finding agreement. Our method breaks down precisely when mock-modular effects are expected in the entropy of one-quarter BPS dyons and we comment upon this. Furthermore, we mention possible applications of these results, including an exact formula for the entropy of four dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ black holes.

Siegel Modular Forms and Black Hole Entropy

We discuss the application of Siegel Modular Forms to Black Hole entropy counting. The role of the Igusa cusp form $χ_{10}$ in the D1D5P system is well-known, and its transformation properties are what allows precision microstate counting in this case. We apply a similar method to extract the Fourier coefficients of other Siegel modular and paramodular forms, and we show that they could serve as candidates for other types of black holes. We investigate the growth of their coefficients, identifying the dominant contributions and the leading logarithmic corrections in various regimes. We also discuss similarities and differences to the behavior of $χ_{10}$, and possible physical interpretations of such forms both from a microscopic and gravitational point of view.

Nonperturbative black hole entropy and Kloosterman sums

Non-perturbative quantum corrections to supersymmetric black hole entropy often involve nontrivial number-theoretic phases called Kloosterman sums. We show how these sums can be obtained naturally from the functional integral of supergravity in asymptotically AdS_2 space for a class of black holes. They are essentially topological in origin and correspond to charge-dependent phases arising from the various gauge and gravitational Chern-Simons terms and boundary Wilson lines evaluated on Dehn-filled solid 2-torus. These corrections are essential to obtain an integer from supergravity in agreement with the quantum degeneracies, and reveal an intriguing connection between topology, number theory, and quantum gravity. We give an assessment of the current understanding of quantum entropy of black holes.

Quantum entropy and exact 4d/5d connection

We consider the AdS_2/CFT_1 holographic correspondence near the horizon of rotating five-dimensional black holes preserving four supersymmetries in N=2 supergravity. The bulk partition function is given by a functional integral over string fields in AdS_2 and is related to the quantum entropy via the Sen's proposal. Under certain assumptions we use the idea of equivariant localization to non-rigid backgrounds and show that the path integral of off-shell supergravity on the near horizon background, which is a circle fibration over AdS_2xS^2, reduces to a finite dimensional integral over n_V+1 parameters C^A, where n_V is the number of vector multiplets of the theory while the C^0 mode corresponds to a normalizable fluctuation of the metric. The localization solutions, which rely only on off-shell supersymmetry, become after a field redefinition, the solutions found for localization of supergravity on AdS_2xS^2. We compute the renormalized action on the localization locus and show that, in the absence of higher derivative corrections, it agrees with the four dimensional counterpart computed on AdS_2x S^2. These results together with possible one-loop contributions can be used to establish an exact connection between five and four dimensional quantum entropies.

Localization in Supergravity and Quantum $AdS_4/CFT_3$ Holography

We compute the quantum gravity partition function of M-theory on $AdS_4 \times X_7 $ by using localization techniques in four-dimensional gauged supergravity obtained by a consistent truncation on the Sasaki-Einstein manifold $X_{7}$. The supergravity path integral reduces to a finite dimensional integral over two collective coordinates that parametrize the localizing instanton solutions. The renormalized action of the off-shell instanton solutions depends linearly and holomorphically on the "square root" prepotential evaluated at the center of $AdS_{4}$. The partition function resembles the Laplace transform of the wave function of a topological string and with an assumption about the measure for the localization integral yields an Airy function in precise agreement with the computation from the boundary ABJM theory on a 3-sphere. Our bulk quantum gravity computation is nonperturbatively exact in four-dimensional Planck length but ignores corrections due to brane-instantons.

Distributed, simple and stable network localization

We propose a simple, stable and distributed algorithm which directly optimizes the nonconvex maximum likelihood criterion for sensor network localization, with no need to tune any free parameter. We reformulate the problem to obtain a gradient Lipschitz cost; by shifting to this cost function we enable a Majorization-Minimization (MM) approach based on quadratic upper bounds that decouple across nodes; the resulting algorithm happens to be distributed, with all nodes working in parallel. Our method inherits the MM stability: each communication cuts down the cost function. Numerical simulations indicate that the proposed approach tops the performance of the state of the art algorithm, both in accuracy and communication cost.

Quantum black holes, localization and the topological string

We use localization to evaluate the functional integral of string field theory on AdS_2xS^2 background corresponding to the near horizon geometry of supersymmetric black holes in 4d compactifications with N=2 supersymmetry. In particular, for a theory containing n_v + 1 vector multiplets, we show that the functional integral localizes exactly onto an ordinary integral over a finite-dimensional submanifold in the field space labeling a continuous family of instanton solutions in which auxiliary fields in the vector multiplets are excited with nontrivial dependence on AdS_2 coordinates. These localizing solutions are universal in that they follow from the off-shell supersymmetry transformations and do not depend on the choice of the action. They are parametrized by n_v +1 real parameters C^I, ; I= 0,..., n_v that correspond to the values of the auxiliary fields at the center of AdS_2. In the Type-IIA frame, assuming D-terms evaluate to zero on the solutions for reasons of supersymmetry, the classical part of the integrand equals the absolute square of the partition function of the topological string as conjectured by Ooguri, Strominger, and Vafa; however evaluated at the off-shell values of scalar fields at the center of AdS_2. In addition, there are contributions from one-loop determinants, brane-instantons, and nonperturbative orbifolds that are in principle computable. These results thus provide a concrete method to compute exact quantum entropy of these black holes including all perturbative and nonperturbative corrections and can be used to establish a precise relation between the quantum degeneracies of black holes and the topological string.

Localization & Exact Holography

We consider the AdS_2/CFT_1 holographic correspondence near the horizon of big four-dimensional black holes preserving four supersymmetries in toroidally compactified Type-II string theory. The boundary partition function of CFT_1 is given by the known quantum degeneracies of these black holes. The bulk partition function is given by a functional integral over string fields in AdS_2. Using recent results on localization we reduce the infinite-dimensional functional integral to a finite number of ordinary integrals over a space of localizing instantons. Under reasonable assumptions about the relevant terms in the effective action, these integrals can be evaluated exactly to obtain a bulk partition function. It precisely reproduces all terms in the exact Rademacher expansion of the boundary partition function as nontrivial functions of charges except for the Kloosterman sum which can in principle follow from an analysis of phases in the background of orbifolded instantons. Our results can be regarded as a step towards proving `exact holography' in that the bulk and boundary partition functions computed independently agree for finite charges. Since the bulk partition function defines the quantum entropy of the black hole, our results enable the evaluation of perturbative as well as nonperturbative quantum corrections to the Bekenstein-Hawking-Wald entropy of these black holes.

DCOOL-NET: Distributed cooperative localization for sensor networks

We present DCOOL-NET, a scalable distributed in-network algorithm for sensor network localization based on noisy range measurements. DCOOL-NET operates by parallel, collaborative message passing between single-hop neighbor sensors, and involves simple computations at each node. It stems from an application of the majorization-minimization (MM) framework to the nonconvex optimization problem at hand, and capitalizes on a novel convex majorizer. The proposed majorizer is endowed with several desirable properties and represents a key contribution of this work. It is a more accurate match to the underlying nonconvex cost function than popular MM quadratic majorizers, and is readily amenable to distributed minimization via the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM). Moreover, it allows for low-complexity, fast Nesterov gradient methods to tackle the ADMM subproblems induced at each node. Computer simulations show that DCOOL-NET achieves comparable or better sensor position accuracies than a state-of-art method which, furthermore, is not parallel.

Quantum entropy of supersymmetric black holes

We review recent progress concerning the quantum entropy of a large class of supersymmetric black holes in string theory both from the microscopic and macroscopic sides. On the microscopic field theory side, we present new results concerning the counting of black hole microstates for charge vectors with nontrivial arithmetic duality invariants. On the macroscopic gravitational side, we present a novel application of localization techniques to a supergravity functional integral to compute the quantum entropy of these black holes. Localization leads to an enormous simplification of a path integral of string theory in AdS_2 by reducing it to a finite dimensional integral. The localizing solutions are labeled by n_v+1 parameters, with n_v the number of vector multiplets in the theory of N=2 supergravity. As an example we show, for four dimensional large black holes which preserve four supersymmetries in toroidally compactified IIB string theory, that the macroscopic degeneracy precisely agrees with all the terms in an exact Rademacher expansion of the microscopic answer except for Kloosterman sums which in principle can be computed. Generalizing previous work, these finite charge contributions to the leading Bekenstein-Hawking entropy can also be viewed as an instance of "exact holography" in the context of AdS_2/CFT_1 correspondence.

Supersymmetric Index from Black Hole Entropy

For BPS black holes with at least four unbroken supercharges, we describe how the macroscopic entropy can be used to compute an appropriate index, which can be then compared with the same index computed in the microscopic description. We obtain exact results incorporating all higher order quantum corrections in the limit when only one of the charges, representing momentum along an internal direction, approaches infinity keeping all other charges fixed at arbitrary finite values. In this limit, we find that the microscopic index is controlled by certain anomaly coefficients whereas the macroscopic index is controlled by the coefficients of certain Chern-Simons terms in the effective action. The equality between the macroscopic and the microscopic index then follows as a consequence of anomaly inflow. In contrast, the absolute degeneracy does not have any such simple expression in terms of the anomaly coefficients or coefficients of Chern-Simons terms. We apply our analysis to several examples of spinning black holes in five dimensions and non-spinning black holes in four dimensions to compute the index exactly in the limit when only one of the charges becomes large, and find perfect agreement with the result of exact microscopic counting. Our analysis resolves a puzzle involving M5-branes wrapped on a 5-cycle in K3 x T^3.

Perturbative tests of non-perturbative counting

We observe that a class of quarter-BPS dyons in N=4 theories with charge vector (Q, P) and with nontrivial values of the arithmetic duality invariant I := gcd (Q wedge P) are nonperturbative in one frame but perturbative in another frame. This observation suggests a test of the recently computed nonperturbative partition functions for dyons with nontrivial values of the arithmetic invariant. For all values of I, we show that the nonperturbative counting yields vanishing indexed degeneracy for this class of states everywhere in the moduli space in precise agreement with the perturbative result.

Counting all dyons in N =4 string theory

For dyons in heterotic string theory compactified on a six-torus, with electric charge vector Q and magnetic charge vector P, the positive integer I = g.c.d.(Q \wedge P) is an invariant of the U-duality group. We propose the microscopic theory for computing the spectrum of all dyons for all values of I, generalizing earlier results that exist only for the simplest case of I=1. Our derivation uses a combination of arguments from duality, 4d-5d lift, and a careful analysis of fermionic zero modes. The resulting degeneracy agrees with the black hole degeneracy for large charges and with the degeneracy of field-theory dyons for small charges. It naturally satisfies several physical requirements including integrality and duality invariance. As a byproduct, we also derive the microscopic (0,4) superconformal field theory relevant for computing the spectrum of five-dimensional Strominger-Vafa black holes in ALE backgrounds and count the resulting degeneracies.
