FineIBT: Fine-grain Control-flow Enforcement with Indirect Branch Tracking

We present the design, implementation, and evaluation of FineIBT: a CFI enforcement mechanism that improves the precision of hardware-assisted CFI solutions, like Intel IBT, by instrumenting program code to reduce the valid/allowed targets of indirect forward-edge transfers. We study the design of FineIBT on the x86-64 architecture, and implement and evaluate it on Linux and the LLVM toolchain. We designed FineIBT's instrumentation to be compact, incurring low runtime and memory overheads, and generic, so as to support different CFI policies. Our prototype implementation incurs negligible runtime slowdowns ($\approx$0%-1.94% in SPEC CPU2017 and $\approx$0%-1.92% in real-world applications) outperforming Clang-CFI. Lastly, we investigate the effectiveness/security and compatibility of FineIBT using the ConFIRM CFI benchmarking suite, demonstrating that our instrumentation provides complete coverage in the presence of modern software features, while supporting a wide range of CFI policies with the same, predictable performance.

Torqued fireballs in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

We show that the fluctuations in the wounded-nucleon model of the initial stage of relativistic heavy-ion collisions, together with the natural assumption that the forward (backward) moving wounded nucleons emit particles preferably in the forward (backward) direction, lead to an event-by-event torqued fireball. The principal axes associated with the transverse shape are rotated in the forward region in the opposite direction than in the backward region. On the average, the standard deviation of the relative torque angle between the forward and backward rapidity regions is about 20deg for the central and 10deg for the mid-peripheral collisions. The hydrodynamic expansion of a torqued fireball leads to a torqued collective flow, yielding, in turn, torqued principal axes of the transverse-momentum distributions at different rapidities. We propose experimental measures, based on cumulants involving particles in different rapidity regions, which should allow for a quantitative determination of the effect from the data. To estimate the non-flow contributions from resonance decays we run Monte Carlo simulations with THERMINATOR. If the event-by-event torque effect is found in the data, it will support the assumptions concerning the fluctuations in the early stage of the fireball formation, as well as the hypothesis of the asymmetric rapidity shape of the emission functions of the moving sources in the nucleus-nucleus collisions.

Forward-backward flow correlations in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

We discuss the torque effect in the initial fireball formed in relativistic heavy-ion collisions, manifesting itself, on the event-by-event basis, in a relative angle between the principal axes of the transverse momentum distributions in the forward and backward rapidity regions. The torque follows from two natural features: 1) the sources of particles (e.g. wounded nucleons) emit predominantly in their forward hemispheres, and 2) there exist fluctuations in the transverse distribution of sources from the two colliding nuclei. On the average, the standard event-by-event deviation of the relative torque angle is about 20 degrees for the central and 10 degrees for the mid-peripheral collisions. The hydrodynamic expansion of a torqued fireball leads to a torqued collective flow of the fluid, which, in turn, yields torqued principal axes of the transverse-momentumdistributions at different rapidities. We discuss experimental measures based on cumulants involving particles in different rapidity regions, which allow for a quantitative extraction of the effect from the experimental data. We estimate the non-flow contributions from resonance decays with the help of THERMINATOR.

Forward-backward rapidity correlations in relativistic heavy ion collisions : torqued fireball

Statistical fluctuations in the transverse distribution of sources in relativistic heavy ion collisions and an asymmetric emission profile associated with the wounded nucleons lead to rapidity dependence of the reaction plane. The size of this effect is estimated for the gold-gold collisions at the highest RHIC energy ($\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200 \mathrm{GeV}$) in the Glauber model using GLISSANDO. The hydrodynamical evolution of the resulting torqued fireball is carried out in 3+1 dimensions considering a perfect fluid. Hadronization is simulated using THERMINATOR including non-flow contribution coming from resonance decays. Some experimental measures that can be used to detect the torque effect are proposed.

Stationary phase corrections in the process of bosonization of multi-quark interactions

The functional integration over the auxiliary bosonic variables of cubic order related with the effective action of the Nambu -- Jona-Lasinio model with 't Hooft term has recently been obtained in the form of a loop expansion. Even numbers of loops contribute to the action, while odd numbers of loops are assigned to the measure. We consider the two-loop corrections and analyse their effect on the low-lying pseudoscalar and scalar mass spectra, quark condensates and weak decay constants. The results are compared to the leading order calculations and other approaches.
