Measurements of New Physics in B -> pi pi Decays

If new physics (NP) is present in B -> pi pi decays, it can affect the isospin I=2 or I=0 channels. In this paper, we discuss various methods for detecting and measuring this NP. The techniques have increasing amounts of theoretical hadronic input. If NP is eventually detected in B -> pi pi -- there is no evidence for it at present -- one will be able to distinguish I=2 and I=0, and measure its parameters, using these methods.

Can one detect new physics in I=0 and/or I=2 contributions to the decays B --> pi pi?

We study the effects of new-physics contributions to B --> pi pi decays, which can be parametrized as four new complex quantities. A simple analysis is provided by utilizing the reparametrization invariance of the decay amplitudes. We find that six quantities can be reabsorbed into the definitions of Standard Model-like parameters. As a result, the usual isospin analysis provides only two constraints on new physics which are independent of estimates for the Standard Model contributions. In particular, we show that one is not sensitive to new physics affecting the I=0 amplitudes. On the other hand, I=2 new physics can be detected, and its parameters can be measured by using independent determinations of the weak phases. We obtain constraints on these new-physics parameters through a fit to the current experimental data.

Phenomenological aspects of CP violation

We present a pedagogical review of the phenomenology of CP violation, with emphasis on B decays. Main topics include the phenomenology of neutral meson systems, CP violation in the Standard Model of electroweak interactions, and B decays. We stress the importance of the reciprocal basis, sign conventions, rephasing invariance, general definitions of the CP transformation and the spurious phases they bring about, CP violation as originating from the clash of two contributions, the rho-eta plane, the four phases of a generalized CKM matrix, and the impact of discrete ambiguities. Specific B decays are included in order to illustrate some general techniques used in extracting information from B physics experiments. We include a series of simple exercises. The style is informal.

Bounds on gamma from CP violation measurements in B -> pi+ pi- and B -> psi K_S

We study the determination of gamma from CP-violating observables in B -> pi+ pi- and B -> psi K_S. This determination requires theoretical input to one combination of hadronic parameters. We show that a mild assumption about this quantity may allow bounds to be placed on gamma, but we stress the pernicious effects that an eightfold discrete ambiguity has on such an analysis. The bounds are discussed as a function of the direct (C) and interference (S) CP-violating observables obtained from time-dependent B -> pi+ pi- decays, and their behavior in the presence of new physics effects in B-Bbar mixing is studied. (V2: Misprints corrected. Slightly improved discussion.)

What can we learn from a measurement of sin(2 beta + gamma)?

The constraints on the value of the CKM phase gamma that may be achieved by prospective measurements of sin(2 beta) and sin(2 beta + gamma) are discussed. Significant constraints require quite small errors, and may depend on assumptions about strong phases. The measurement of sin(2 beta + gamma) combined with other experiments could provide valuable limits on new physics in Bd-Bdbar mixing.

Using kaon regeneration to probe the quark mixing parameter cos(2 beta) in B --> psi K decays

We suggest a novel method to determine the sign of cos(2 beta) in the decays B --> psi K, by creating interference between KL and KS final states via ``regeneration,'' that is propagation through a matter target region to convert some KL to KS. The determination of this quantity resolves an ambiguity between beta and (90o - beta) that remains after the standard measurements of sin(2 beta) and may turn out to be important in resolving whether the result is in agreement with Standard Model predictions or indicates the presence of new physics. We find the measurement is feasible at a B-factory, but requires several years of high-luminosity running with a regeneration target affecting a significant fraction of the detector.

Implications of the possibility that sin(2 beta) is small

Recently, the Babar and Belle collaborations have reported their first measurements of the CP-violating asymmetry in Bd --> psi KS, and more precise results will follow soon. We discuss what a future evidence for small sin(2 beta) could mean, contrasting the usual possibility of new physics in the Bd system, with the interesting alternative that the new physics effects are confined to the kaon system.

Matter effects in the D0-D0bar system

We discuss the impact of matter effects in the D0-D0bar system. We show that such effects could, in principle, be measured, but that they cannot be used to probe the mass difference x_D or the lifetime difference y_D. This occurs because the mixing effects and the matter effects decouple at short times. We also comment briefly on the B systems.

Qualitative Signals of New Physics in B-Bbar Mixing

It is expected that, within the next three years, the determination of the CKM matrix elements with the least theoretical uncertainty will arise from the measurements of CP violation in B_d --> J/ψK_S decays and from Bs-Bsbar mixing. If there is significant new physics in Bs-Bsbar mixing, then those experiments will not yield the correct values for the CKM matrix elements. As a result, a qualitative signal of new physics may appear in the CP violation of decays like B_d --> pi+ pi-.

The use of early data on B --> rho pi decays

This paper reviews the Dalitz plot analysis for the decays $B^0(\bar B^0) \to ρπ\to π^+ π^- π^0$. We discuss what can be learned about the ten parameters in this analysis from untagged and from tagged time-integrated data. We find that, with the important exception of the interesting CP violating quantity $α$, the parameters can be determined from this data sample -- and, hence, they can be measured at CLEO as well as at the asymmetric $B$ factories. This suggests that the extraction of $α$ from the time-dependent data sample can be accomplished with a smaller data sample (and, therefore, sooner) than would be required if all ten parameters were to be obtained from that time-dependent data sample alone. We also explore bounds on the shift of the true angle $α$ from the angle measured from charged $ρ$ final states alone. These may be obtained prior to measurements of the parameters describing the neutral $ρ$ channel, which are expected to be small.

Disentangling violations of CPT from other new-physics effects

We analyze the prospects for observing CPT violation using neutral-meson P0-P0bar systems. Before one can claim a measurement of CPT violation, one must be able to rule out the possibility that its result is due to simpler new-physics effects. In particular, one must be able to separate the CPT-violating quantities from parameters violating the Delta P = ΔQ rule of semileptonic decays, and from new-physics contributions to the production mechanism of the neutral mesons. One can isolate CPT violation using the semileptonic decays of single, tagged neutral mesons; unfortunately, this situation cannot be implemented at the Upsilon(4S). For P0-P0bar pairs produced in a correlated parity-odd state we show that, by combining the di-lepton with the single-lepton decays, it is in principle possible to extract unambiguously one CPT-violating parameter. Finally, we develop the formalism necessary for describing new-physics effects in the production mechanism; this includes both cascade decays and violations of the rule of associated production.

New CP-violating parameters in cascade decays

We consider decay chains of the type P -> M + ... -> f + ..., where M is a neutral meson that may mix with its antiparticle Mbar, before decaying into the final state f. P may be either a heavier neutral meson or a charged meson. We perform a rephasing-invariant analysis of the quantities that show up in such cascade decays. If the decay P -> M + ... (or the decay P -> Mbar + ...) is forbidden, we find the usual lambda_f parameters describing the interference between the mixing of a neutral meson system and the decay from that system into the final state f. However, when both the P -> M + ... and P -> Mbar + ... decays are allowed, we find a new class of rephasing-invariant parameters, xi_i, that measure the interference between the mixing of a neutral meson system and the decay from the initial state *into that system*. We show that the quantities lambda_f and xi_i are necessary and sufficient to describe all the interference effects present in the most general cascade decay. We discuss the various cascade decays in turn, highlighting the special features of each one.

Detecting new physics contributions to the D0-D0bar mixing through their effects on B decays

New physics effects may yield a detectable mass difference in the D0-D0bar system, Delta m_D. Here we show that this has an important impact on some B --> D decays. The effect involves a new source of CP violation, which arises from the interference between the phases in the B --> D decays and those in the D0-D0bar system. This interference is naturally large. New physics may well manifest itself through Delta m_D contributions to these B decays.

Detecting New Physics from CP-violating phase measurements in B decays

The standard CKM model can be tested and New Physics detected using only CP-violating phase measurements in B decays. This requires the measurement of a phase factor which is small in the Standard Model, in addition to the usual large phases $β$ and $γ$. We also point out that identifying violations of the unitarity of the CKM matrix is rather difficult, and cannot be done with phase measurements alone.

Decoupling or nondecoupling: is that the $R_b$ question?

The top quark is well known for the nondecoupling effects it implies in $ρ$ and $R_b$. The recent experimental $R_b$ data exhibits a disagreement with the SM prediction at more than the $3 σ$ level. It is tempting to explore whether this might be due to nondecoupling New Physics effects, opposite to those of the top. We investigate this issue in the context of models with an extra family of right or left handed, singlet or doublet quarks. It is shown that, contrary to what one might naively expect, the nondecoupling properties of a mirror $t^\prime$ do not have an impact on $R_b$, due to a conspiracy of the mixing angles, imposed by the requirement that there be no $b$ - $b^\prime$ mixing. Our analysis agrees with an analysis performed independently, which includes this model as a particular case.

Jarlskog-like invariants for theories with scalars and fermions

Within the framework of theories where both scalars and fermions are present, we develop a systematic prescription for the construction of CP-violating quantities that are invariant under basis transformations of those matter fields. In theories with Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking, the analysis involves the vevs' transformation properties under a scalar basis change, with a considerable simplification of the study of CP violation in the scalar sector. These techniques are then applied in detail to the two Higgs-doublet model with quarks. It is shown that there are new invariants involving scalar-fermion interactions, besides those already derived in previous analyses for the fermion-gauge and scalar-gauge sectors.

Fundamental CP-violating quantities in a SU(2)$ \otimes $U(1) model with many Higgs doublets

We consider a SU(2)$ \otimes $U(1) gauge theory with many scalar doublets, but without fermions. We devise a systematic method of constructing quantities which are invariant under changes of basis of the scalar fields, but acquire a minus sign under a general CP transformation. Those quantities provide a basis-independent way of checking for the existence of CP violation.
